For decades, the famous French endurance race at Le Mans was dominated by European teams. American cars were considered too heavy and too weak to be competitive in a 24hour road race. In 1960, the No. 3 Corvette changed that. The racer placed first in its class at Le Mans and forever changed foreign perceptions about American racing machines. From early October through Sunday, Oct. 27, guests visiting the AACA Museum Inc. in Hershey can see the actual car that roared down the Mulsanne Straight almost 60 years ago and changed international racing history. Enthusiasts who want to learn more about this car and its restoration are invited to attend the annual Night at the Museum on Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 6 to 10 p.m. and hear

Knepper, who resides in Lancaster and works as a nurse in Hershey, read a newspaper article about an alternative gift fair happening in Harrisburg and thought it would be great to bring one to Lancaster. “I just loved what they were doing, because I’ve always been kind of a minimalist, and giving gifts that would also serve a deeper purpose really resonated with me,” Knepper said. This year, the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair is moving to a new location. The 12th annual event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. People may visit with representatives of 30 nonprofits that are providing life-changing benefits to people in both local and global contexts. Individuals will have the option of purchasing charitable gift donations to honor loved ones, and each of those gifts will include a greeting card and an explanatory insert about how the donation will sustain and provide for others. Founder Jenn Knepper said that the fair also offers plenty of options for individuals who would rather purchase something tangible to gift those on their holiday shopping list with as well. In addition to the 30 nonprofits, approximately 12 marketplace vendors will sell fair trade items. “We try to emphasize that there’s something for everybody,” explained Knepper. “And if you are going to buy tangible things, make it something that is ethically sourced. People want to make those choices, and the fair brings a lot of options into one place.” The fair serves as a strong community-building event as the nonprofits that participate are able to share their stories and missions with shoppers, building both relationships and awareness. One of the new participants
in this year’s fair will be Bridge, an award-winning cultural exchange startup established by Somalian refugee Mustafa Nuur. “We are a social enterprise company, and we use cultural events to connect people in the community with refugees,” explained Nuur. Bridge, which allows people to purchase in-home dining experiences with local refugee families, offers refugees an opportunity to use their existing skills to make a supplemental income and provides Americans with cross-cultural experiences in their own hometown. Exclusive gift certificates will be available for GTGH attendees to purchase. Another new GTGH participant for 2019 will be AIM to Empower, a nonprofit organization founded by Beth Weaver in 2017 with the intent of creating connection and opportunity through the practice of yoga. “I’ve seen the positive impact (yoga) can have on people, so we want to take yoga to underserved populations,” Weaver said. AIM to Empower has implemented yoga programs in places including Lancaster County Prison, Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center, Refugee Center and Community School at Reynolds, and Lourdeshouse Maternity Home. At GTGH, plenty of food will be available to purchase from local vendors such as Upohar, Reunion Food Truck, Grape Leaf Cafe, and The Lancaster Stroopies Company, so Knepper encourages attendees to come hungry. A new food tour will allow people to purchase tickets and receive a

Local Girl Scouts Serve In St. Croix By Chelsea Peifer
Hurricane Maria ravaged the United States Virgin Island of St. Croix in September 2017, and as anyone who has experienced major storms, floods, and hurricanes knows, the relief efforts usually last for months and years after the initial damage has occurred. That meant that when nine members of Manheim Girl Scout Troop 70101 and five adult chaperones headed to St. Croix for a week in June, there was still plenty of work to be done. The trip happened as a result of troop leader Gayle Ryan, who said that a visiting priest came to her church and talked about the needs of people in St. Croix even before Hurricane Maria struck. After the storm battered the small Caribbean island, Ryan and the members of Troop 70101 adopted a church in St. Croix, sending handmade candles and care packages prior to this summer’s visit. Students who took part in the St. Croix trip were all Seniors and Ambassadors, who are Girl Scouts in ninth and 10th grades and 11th and 12th grades, respectively. From June 15 to 21, group
members stayed in a Catholic church on the island and spent their days preparing and serving food in soup kitchens, painting and helping with home repairs, and visiting a home for disabled youths and adults. For many of the girls, it was their first time flying and traveling out of the United States. Nineteen-yearold Trinity Haggans, who graduated from Manheim Central High School (MCHS), said that at first the experience was overwhelming. Riding in vehicles that drove on the left side of the road felt chaotic. “Everyone was very welcoming, though,” Trinity shared. “And everybody knew that we were the Girl Scouts wherever we went.” The recognition was due in part to the matching green shirts the girls wore on their first day in St. Croix, but also because the island is quite a small place. “It takes 45 minutes to drive from one end (of the island) to the other,” noted Shelby Heinsey, 17, who attends Eastern Lebanon County (ELCO) High School. “All of the houses are really bright colors.” “It was so gorgeous,” agreed Sage Gibson, a 16-year-old MCHS

student. “There were chickens everywhere. They were like stray dogs, only chickens.” For Sage, a highlight of her time was visiting a home for teenagers and young adults with disabilities. “I learned that really simple things make them happy,” remarked Sage. At the home, the girls gave manicures to residents, talked with them, and played games. Makayla Cawley, 15, who attends Lebanon Catholic High School, said that her favorite part of the trip was the day the troop

spent making stone soup and then delivering it to people living in homes where power still had not been restored. Linden Hall student Brynne Lancelotta, 15, said that she was surprised by how friendly the islanders were. Shelby said that everyone would welcome and greet the girls with smiles. “Coming home, I wanted to have that same attitude and be that positive and friendly,” added Shelby. Riding horses on the beach and visiting the outdoor market were other high points for the girls, along with what they dubbed “evening rooftop talks” in the moonlight on the flat, fenced-in roof of the building where they stayed. In addition to Trinity, Shelby, Sage, Makayla, and Brynne, the students who traveled to St. Croix included Olivia Faulhaber, Hailey Kowalski, Adie Ramirez, and Ansley Ryan. In 1969, Camp Hill High School band took a trip to Miami to march in the Orange Bowl Parade held on New Year’s Eve. The band then attended the Orange Bowl game that pitted Penn State against Missouri. During Camp Hill High School’s homecoming weekend on Friday, Oct. 4, band and band front members from 1968 to 1975 are invited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their participation in the Orange Bowl festivities. Band members will get together to reminisce, reconnect, and recognize the leadership of R. Rees Llewellyn, former band director. Members are not required to pay or play anything, but they are encouraged to bring their instruments if they have them. Llewellyn will direct the alma mater and the national anthem before the start of the homecoming game. Alumni will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the high school band room and walk as a group to the football field. Anyone unable to participate in the walk can join former band members at the stadium, where they will sit together as a group. On Saturday, Oct. 5, more activities are planned for the morning, including a trip to Fiala Field to see the current band practice. For more information or to attend, readers may contact Janet Kelley, Class of 1972, at janetekelley@comcast.net.
