Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church, 5501 Old Locust Lane, Harrisburg, will hold its annual ethnic food festival, the Slavic “Plus Food Fest, in the church’s fellowship hall on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6 and 7, from noon to 3 p.m. The event will feature traditional delicacies from two different parts of the world, Eastern Europe and East Africa. The annual food festival will include giveaway drawings for more than three dozen themed baskets, a vendor fair featuring specialty merchants, Orthodox Christian religious articles and books available for purchase, and tours of Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church. Admission and parking are free. The event is open to the public. The foods at the Slavic “Plus Food Fest represent the ancestral homelands and heritage of the people who founded Christ the Saviour parish in 1963. Many of these founders were first-generation Americans whose parents had immigrated to the U.S. from Eastern European countries, including Ukraine, Slovakia, Poland, Russia, Belarus, Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Romania. For the past several years, the menu
has also included the cuisine of the ancient African Christian kingdom of Aksum, thanks to a contingent of Eritrean and Ethiopian immigrants who constitute approximately one quarter of the parish’s membership. Slavic dishes at the festival will include holubki, also known as holubtsy, halupki, or golubtsi. The name literally means pigeons, but there is no pigeon in holubki. The dish consists of a mixture of seasoned ground meats and rice wrapped in cabbage leaves and braised in a savory broth until tender. The church will also serve pirohy, also known as pierogi or varenniki, crescent-shaped pockets of fresh pasta stuffed with cheesy mashed potatoes and served with diced onions in butter. Other items will include the garlicky smoked pork sausage known as kolbassy (kielbasa); halushky, noodles sautÊed with cooked chopped cabbage and onions; and Macedonian burgers known as sharska pleskavica or lovechka pleskavica, seasoned with onions, herbs, and bell peppers. Alongside these tastes of Eastern Europe will be a fragrant Eritrean and

The dish is a stew of chicken simmered in a slow-cooked base of seasoned onions and a blend of ground, toasted spices known as berbere. This year, there will be two versions, mild and spicy. Both versions will be accompanied by a stretchy, bubbly flatbread called injera, made with the ancient African grain teff. Kifli, traditional Slavic cookies with sweet walnut paste rolled up in a diamond of pastry, along with baklava and other treats will be available. The church will also serve hombasha, or himbasha, a slightly sweet Eritrean and Ethiopian bread seasoned with cardamom and made for celebrations. All food served at the festival will be handmade at the church by parishioners, with the exception of the kolbassy, which is handcrafted by a traditional artisanal sausage shop. In addition to the food festival, Christ the Saviour’s cultural celebrations include an International Day of food and culture on Pentecost Sunday. Also, each November the Eritrean and Ethiopian community at Christ the Saviour parish hosts a fellowship hour that features East African foods and traditions. The Christ the Saviour parish community is ethnically diverse, and the worship is in English. For more information, readers may visit www.ctshbg.org.

Showing Of “FaceAge” Set The Doctors Kienle Center for Humanistic Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine on the Penn State Health Campus, 500 University Drive, Hershey, will present the showing of “FaceAge” at the Simulation Center, Bay C, on the second floor above the Harrel Health Sciences Library. Viewing hours for the general public are Monday, Oct. 8, and
Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. “FaceAge,” created by Professor Andrew Belser, a 2017-18 Penn State laureate, is an awardwinning multi-media installation created from filmed cross-generational encounters. The installation places audiences within a synchronized, three-screen
surround where younger participants, ages 18 to 22, and older ones, age 70 and older, are seen studying and describing one another’s faces. The 56-minute loop of moving and still imagery weaves together interconnected chapters in which young adults and aging individuals reflect on life. “FaceAge” attempts to challenge
perceptions, foster introspection, and build acceptance, awareness, and cross-generational connections. The event is free and open to the public. No preregistration is required. For more information, readers may contact jballard@ pennstatehealth.psu.edu or visit http://sites.psu.edu/kienlecenter or www.faceage.org.

Joe was advanced to the rank of Tenderfoot because he mastered numerous skills including preparing and cooking meals on campouts, first aid techniques, safe hiking rules and intricate knot-tying. In addition, Joe served in numerous community service projects that helped him reach his requirements for advancement. Committee chair Ted Pauley and advancement chair Julie Myers awarded nearly 40 merit badges. The Scouts took advantage of the summer months to earn badges in primarily outdoor activities including fishing, climbing, canoeing, rifle shooting, camping, astronomy, nature, oceanography, space exploration, bird study, personal fitness, swimming, forestry, shotgun, and insect study. In August, Vietnam veterans from Chapter 542 of Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA), along with their families and friends, traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in a ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. In addition to the Harrisburg veterans, members of a Boy Scout troop and another V VA chapter from Silver Spring, Md., participated. The ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance. The service members listed on
the wall were called to attention. Many of the veterans located the names of friends lost during the war and honored them by washing their granite panels on the wall. Following the wall washing, the ceremony concluded with laying of a wreath of flowers. VVA Chapter 542 meets at 12:30 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month at 8000 Derry St., Harrisburg. The next meeting will take place on Oct. 14. The meet- Vietnam veterans saluted during a ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. ing is open to the public.

Therapy Dog Faces Physical Challenges Tulip, therapy dog and official greeter to everyone arriving at a local therapeutic riding program, is currently facing her own physical challenges. Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association (CATRA) in Grantville has been home to Tulip for nearly nine years. CATRA offers therapeutic riding for special needs children, adolescents and adults. Tulip is not only CATRA’s official greeter, she is also an integral part of the stable’s Paws-N-Read program, which offers young readers the comfort of an unbiased listener as they read aloud. In late May, Tulip, a tri-color Pembroke Welsh Corgi, suffered a fractured pelvis and displaced right leg when trapped beneath the wheels of a vehicle at the stable. Dr. Marcus Bradbury of Hope Veterinary Specialists in Malvern reattached Tulip’s right leg to her pelvis with two pins the day after her accident. Dr. Kathryn Poteet, of Animal Health Care Center of Hershey, managed Tulip ’s recovery through the summer, and Tulip recently began a
