While farmers use scarecrows to keep birds away, members of the Hummelstown Business and Professional Association (HBPA) hope that scarecrows will actually attract visitors to the town square during its Scarecrows on the Square event.

As part of the annual contest, businesses, organizations, families and individuals are invited to create scarecrows and place them in the town square. The scarecrows can be in any form, and they may include signage and messages.

“We have traditional scarecrows with hay bales that businesses and organizations and families put together, but it can be anything,” explained HBPA board member Erika Hilbert. “(People) have used unique materials to make their scarecrows. There are no specific guidelines to what kind of scarecrows they can make.”

Family Fun At GEARS Fall Festival

“As a nonprofit, GEARS appreciates all the great things the community does for us,” said Lee Eckert, program coordinator. “We love doing big activities for everyone as a way of saying thank you to the community for supporting us all year.”

GEARS will host the 12th annual Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St.

The Fall Festival will have something for people of all ages, Eckert noted. “Our barrel train is back this year, and that’s always popular with kids,” he stated. “New this year, our senior center will be running bingo out of ag hall. We’re really looking forward to that.”

GEARS will again partner with members of Elizabethtown Area Middle School’s Student Council, who will offer a variety of free yard games. Elizabethtown College students will provide several free activities, including Halloween bookmarks, leaf crafts and sand art bracelets. Members of the Elizabethtown College wrestling team will operate a haunted barn from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “That’s for all ages, so they’ll change the experience depending on if a little kid is going through or a high-schooler is going through,” Eckert said.

A variety of inflatables will be on-site, including a slide, a bounce house and a basketball

hoop. “This year, we’re having an inflatable obstacle course as well,” Eckert remarked. Wristbands may be purchased for all-day access to the inflatables and will include the opportunity to paint a pumpkin. Additional activities will include balloon art from The Balunguy from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., pumpkin golf and hayrides.

The Elizabethtown Area High School basketball team will operate a concession stand, and Hitch Coffee and Fuego Latino will be on-site with food trucks. The Kids Center at GEARS will host a chicken barbecue at the Fall Festival, with tickets available for purchase at GEARS in advance or on-site on the day of the festival. Each meal will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, a roll, applesauce and a dessert.

The Elizabethtown Fire Department will have fire trucks on-site, and a variety of vendors and information booths will be set up.

“We really want to thank the Elizabethtown School Dis-

trict and fairgrounds for use of the facility,” Eckert said, noting that Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church also provides use of its parking lot for the festival. Members 1st Federal Credit Union is the event sponsor, he said, and he expressed thanks to the Elizabethtown Police Department and fire police for their support of the festival.

“It’s really cool to be able to do an event where you can come a spend a little money if you’re able to or you can just do all the free things,” Eckert said, noting that the Fall Festival would not be possible without the groups that partner with GEARS. “It’s great when the community comes together, and everybody is on the same page to offer a fun event for the community.”

For more information on the Fall Festival, visit www.geatinto gears.org. To purchase tickets for the chicken barbecue, email wendymusser@getintogears.org, call 717-367-0119 or stop by the GEARS Kids Center office, 70 S. Poplar St, Elizabethtown.

Dinner And Family Fun

“We encourage people to come into our church, check out us, share a meal and have some fellowship,” said Gail Ruhl, describing the annual chicken potpie dinner at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, and this year, it will feature “A Night With Noah” after the dinner. The meal will be available for sit-down service or to go

from 4 to 6 p.m. or until sold out, Ruhl said. The menu will include chicken potpie, green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, homemade desserts and assorted beverages. There are separate prices for adults and for children. Children age 5 and under may eat for free.

Proceeds from the dinner will be used to support upcoming mission trips. Although the destination of next summer’s trip is not finalized yet, Ruhl noted that the church has a long history

of supporting projects around the world. “All proceeds will be used for mission work locally, nationally or globally,” she said.

This is the first time the church is combining the dinner with an event afterward. “We haven’t done a dual event like this before, but we’re hoping families and individuals will stick around for Noah’s ark,” she stated.

“A Night With Noah” will feature activities in multiple locations throughout the church, all based on the story of Noah’s ark from the book of Genesis. “It’s going to start off with a short, animated video about Noah’s ark,” said John Renninger, who is the event coordinator. “Then, we’ll go into who Noah was as a person, talk about his family and so on.” Additional stations will include the opportunity to measure the distance of the ark’s length and width, play games and hear Bible verses related to the story of Noah.

“I have somebody who is going to be Noah, and then I have someone who will be speaking as the voice of

Acclimating Cats To A New Home

Cats have a special place in the hearts of millions of people. The personalities of cats, coupled with their compact size, can make them suitable pets for a variety of homes.

Individuals who adopt cats may want to take every step they can to help the cat feel comfortable in its new home. The length of time it will take for the cat to adjust to a new environment depends on the cat’s temperament, but the following tips can help.

If the cat has a favorite toy, carrier, or scratching post, the new owner should bring the familiar item along. Moving something into the home that has the animal’s smell may help it to adjust more quickly.

One room should be selected as a home base. Introducing the cat to the entire home and all its residents at the same time can be overwhelming. Rather, a small room in the home, such as an office or laundry space, should be designated as the cat’s initial residence. With the door closed, this small space can be comforting and let the cat learn the smells and sounds of the home before it ventures into other areas. Owners should remember to visit often and provide plenty of love and affection as tolerated by the cat. It is important to avoid lots of commotion in the household. A cat’s early days in a new home are not the time for the owners to host a house

Fire Company Slates Bingo

Lisburn Community Fire Company, 1800 Main St., Mechanicsburg, will host bingo in the social hall on Sunday, Oct. 16. Bingo will begin at 1:30 p.m., with early bird games at 1 p.m. Doors and the kitchen will open at 11:30 a.m. The event will feature regular bingo, special bingo games, and a final jackpot.

Tickets will be discounted when purchased in advance

and full price at the door.

Additional cards will be available for purchase.

For details and to reserve tickets prior to the event, contact lisburnfire24@gmail.com or 717-766-3994. W hen people are reserving tickets, the name of a contact person and the number of people in their party should be provided. To learn more, visit www.lisburnfire.org.

party. Stressors like large crowds, increased foot traffic, and kids’ play dates should be removed. Loud sounds and sudden movements can put cats on edge.

As the cat is invited into other areas of the home, people should let the cat set the pace and resist the urge to pull the pet out from a hiding place under a bed or couch. The cat will start to venture out when it is ready.

Children should initially be kept away from the cat. Young children tend to be energetic and jerky, which is not a good mix with a skittish cat. The cat should be introduced to children in short sessions with careful supervision so the cat does not get hurt and children are not scratched or bitten if the cat becomes scared.

Likewise, existing pets should be introduced gradually. A dog should be kept confined until the cat feels secure in the home. Two altered cats can become friends in the same home, but older cats often are more accepting of kittens than other adults.

As the cat adjusts to its new home, owners should continue to provide it with a quiet area. According to cat behaviorist Jackson Galaxy, cats

God,” Renninger noted, adding that a backdrop of Noah’s ark will also be set up, along with animal face masks as a photo station.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal along for the event, and Renninger noted that the activities are geared for people of all ages. “Any child through grade school and middle school can do these activities and enjoy them,” he remarked. “Older kids can help some of the younger children. It’s going to be a good, wholesome family event with a lot of things to do. It’s a way to get the whole family involved.”

“A Night With Noah” will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and Renninger recommends arriving in time to start at 6 as all attendees will progress in one group through each station. “If you want to see the whole story of Noah, come at the beginning,” he said.

need solitude and quiet time. A box or basket lined with soft, washable bedding in a corner can serve as a place for a cat to retire to.

Cats are happiest when they have had time to get used to their new home. Once an adoption takes place, owners may follow the aforementioned tips to help the cat become comfortable in its new environment.

Simon Johnson, master of music at Westminster Cathedral, London, will perform on Derry Church’s Aeolian-Skinner Op. 1132 pipe organ at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, in the sanctuary.

The Aeolian-Skinner Op. 1132 organ was originally installed in 1950 at the Church of the Redeemer in New Haven, Conn. Derry Church purchased it in the fall of 2019 as the Church of the Redeemer was closing, and the installation was completed in September 2021.

Prior to working at Westminster Cathedral, Johnson was the organist and assistant director of music at St Paul’s Cathedral since 2008, during which time he played for all the national events that took place there, including the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen and the funeral of Baroness Thatcher. Previously, he was assistant mas-

ter of music at St Albans Cathedral, establishing the reputation of the Girls’ Choir. His first job was director of music at All Saints’ Church in Northampton.

“The Armed Man”

Scheduled

Arts on the Square, a series of musical and visual arts events, will present Karl Jenkins’ “The Armed Man” at Market Square Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Second St., Harrisburg, on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. The concert will be presented in partnership with the Harrisburg Chapter of Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence.

“The Armed Man” is a call for world peace and an end to gun violence. Composed by Welsh composer and conductor Jenkins in 1999, it is based on parts of a Mass, which Jenkins combines with other sources, principally the 15thcentury folk song “L’homme armé” in the first and last movements.

Performing will be the 50 voices of the Sanctuary Choir of Market Square Church and the community-based Market Square Singers, accompanied by orchestra and organ.

The cost of a ticket includes parking in the adjacent Market Square Garage. Tickets are available in advance at www.marketsquarechurch.org /concerts or at the door. Access to the church building is directly from the first level of the garage or from the event entrance on South Second Street.

For more information on the event or for a schedule of Arts on the Square events, contact Tyler Canonico at 717-2571270, ext. 18, or canonico@ marketsquarechurch.org. Additional details are available at www.facebook.com/arts onthesquareMSPC.

Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence is a faith-based movement to prevent gun violence. To learn more, visit www.heedinggodscall.org /harrisburg-pa.
