This one-woman play celebrates the music and life of Nadia Boulanger, who was the first woman to conduct the New York Philharmonic and produce and conduct recordings, as well as the first professional female organist. Boulanger became a mentor to thousands of American and European musicians, from Aaron Copland to Quincy Jones. The play “Nadia,” performed by Yale professor Adriana Zabala, LVC’s Eric Fung, and Minnesota violinist Stephanie Arado, interweaves chamber music with Boulanger’s life story. Although her cello career is Minnesotabased, the author, Mina Fisher, is a Hershey native, and her parents taught music education in Hershey and at Millersville University.

A good Halloween scare should come from costumes, not accidents or injuries. This Halloween, people are encouraged to consider several safety measures, courtesy of Safe Kids Worldwide, the Mayo Clinic, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People should make sure they are visible when trickor-treating. Reflective tape, glow sticks, flashlights, or camping lanterns can make pedestrians more visible to motorists. Pedestrians should walk on sidewalks if they are available. When sidewalks are not available, pedestrians should walk facing traffic and do so as far to the side of the road as they can get. Drivers should be especially alert to pedestrians on Halloween. Drivers should proceed slowly, as many kids scurry from house to house in search of Halloween candy. Pedestrians and drivers should follow the rules of the road, including stopping at intersections and crossing in crosswalks. People should consider alternatives to carving pumpkins, as there is a risk
of being cut while carving. If carving pumpkins is part of the holiday plans, carving should be left to adults. Battery-operated flameless candles or glow sticks should be used to illuminate jack-o’-lanterns. All costumes, wigs, and accessories should be fireresistant. Costumes should not impede the ability to walk or see. Makeup should be tested in advance to check for skin irritation before application. It should be removed promptly after returning home. A buddy system should be set up so that no one is going out alone. Parents should agree on a specific time children should return home. Adults should chaperone young children. While incidences of candy tampering may be minimal, no one should snack on candy until it has been inspected. Inspections also protect against food allergies. Also, the candy bounty should be rationed so no one overindulges and feels ill later on. The Halloween season is a fun time of year, but safety should go hand in hand with celebrating.
A Jolly Old Race BY CATHY MOLITORIS
On Saturday, Dec. 4, the streets of Manheim will be overrun with Santas. The sixth annual Manheim Lions Club Santa 5K Run & Walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will feature participants dressed as the jolly old elf. Registration is now open for the event, and people are encouraged to register early to ensure the lowest entry fee and to obtain special race swag. There is a discounted entry fee until Monday, Nov. 1. Anyone age 15 and older may choose either a Santa suit or a crewneck sweatshirt if registration is received before Monday, Nov. 15. Anyone age 14 and younger will receive a crewneck sweatshirt and a Santa hat if registered before that date as well. Race-day registration will be accepted beginning at 7 a.m. on Dec. 4 at Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 48 Market Square.
“This is a really fun day,” said Nancy Husser, event chair. “It’s a way to support our community, and it’s a fundraiser for our club.” She emphasized that money raised by the event benefits local people. “All of the money stays in Manheim,” she stated, adding that the funds will be used to address community needs and support groups, including Cub Scout Pack 47. “The Manheim Lions Club motto is ‘We serve,’ and this is just one way we can give back to our community.” Husser said over the years she’s seen a variety of costumed participants beyond Santa Claus. “We’ve had the Grinch and Mrs. Grinch for several years,” she noted. “We’ve had a lot of elves. I haven’t had any snowmen yet, though.” Community members who live along the route are encouraged to come out and show
their support for the race participants. “I try to go around to every single household the race course impacts and drop off a paper telling them when the race is and encouraging them to cheer on the runners,” Husser said. “We’ve had people who play Christmas music from their porch.” Along with the race, the Lions Club will also collect new, unwrapped Toys for Tots donations at the event, Husser noted. Trophies will be awarded for both overall male and female finishers as well as top finishers in each age category.
Husser noted, however, that the event doesn’t focus on being a hardcore race. “It’s low-key,” she remarked. “There are serious runners among (the participants), but at the same time, a lot of people who come out do it just to dress up and have a good time out on the course. You don’t have to run. We have lots of walkers, and that’s also encouraged.” For more information on the race, visit www.manheim lions.org. To register for the race, visit www.runsignup.com and search for “Manheim Santa 5K Run and Walk.

Tips To Avoid Coronavirus Scams The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by an outbreak of coronavirus scams, which may target older Americans. John Waggoner and Andy Markowitz of AARP offer some suggestions for avoiding these scams: -Avoid online offers for coronavirus cures or faster access to vaccines. They may not be legitimate. -Be wary of emails, calls, and social media posts advertising free or government-ordered
COVID-19 tests. Check the FDA website, www.fda.gov, for a list of approved tests and testing companies. -Don’t click on links or download files from unexpected emails, even if the email address looks like it is connected to a company or person you recognize. The same goes for text messages and unfamiliar websites. -Don’t share personal information such as Social Security, Medicare, and credit card numbers in response to an
unsolicited call, text, or email. -Be skeptical of fundraising calls or emails for COVID-19 victims or virus research, especially if the person calling or emailing tries pressuring you to act fast and then requests payment by prepaid debit cards or gift cards. -Ignore phone calls or emails from strangers urging you to invest in a new stock from a company working on coronavirus-related products or services.

Walking through the halls of Willow Valley Lakes, Candace O’Donnell gets some strange looks. Her fellow residents do a double take because O’Donnell is dressed like Queen Victoria, complete with a purple gown, white wig and crown. “ We are not amused,” O’Donnell remarks in a British accent. Then she breaks character. She explains that she’s dressed this way for a photo shoot because she will be portraying Queen Victoria in an upcoming performance. On Monday, Oct. 25, O’Donnell will present “Bringing the Ladies to Life - Queen Victoria, Mary Todd Lincoln and Sarah Bernhardt” at the Elizabeth Hughes Society meeting. The show is open to the public and will be held at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown, beginning at 7:30 p.m. O’Donnell, a retired Elizabethtown College English professor, has been performing one-woman shows for years. She’s played on stage at the Fulton Theatre, Ephrata Performing Arts Center and other venues. In March, she’ll present her newest work, “Victoria’s Secrets,” performing as Queen Victoria, at the Ware Center in Lancaster. For her performance at the Elizabeth Hughes Society meeting, she’ll offer a taste of what audiences might see in her full-length shows, portraying each woman for about 10 minutes. O’Donnell, 79, said she loves what she does, adding
that she does all the research and writing for her shows. “I look for the crazy. What makes this person unusual?” she stated. “I also try to find something surprising that people don’t know about this person.” For Queen Victoria, for example, she emphasizes that although the royal had a reputation for being uptight and prudish, she was anything but. “She was obsessed with Albert,” O’Donnell explained, adding that she was first smitten by her future husband when she spotted him wearing tight white riding pants. “Everything she did was to impress him.” For her Sarah Bernhardt performance, O’Donnell focuses on the “femme fatale” aspect of the 19th-century French actress. “Sarah was an age defier,” she stated. “She lied about her age constantly.” O’Donnell said the actress was a fierce woman who continued to perform for a decade even after injuring her leg and having it amputated. Although O’Donnell works hard to portray the humor of each woman, playing Mary Todd Lincoln makes this more difficult, she said. “She was an emotionally fragile person with unspeakable tragedy in her life,” she commented, noting that Mary experienced increasing mental illness later in life. However, O’Donnell does find some funny moments in Mary’s interactions with her husband and in her reputation for being a shopaholic. Being in the spotlight comes naturally to O’Donnell,
who added, “I’ve been a ham all my life.” The mother of four and grandmother of eight said she loves performing not just because she’s in front of an audience, but also because her shows give her the chance to showcase incredible women from history. “I want to bring these women to life,” she stated. “I want to understand, to the
best of my ability, what makes them tick. I don’t want these to be caricatures. These women are compelling to me. I fall in love with them despite their faults, sometimes because of their faults.” Tickets are not required for the Elizabeth Hughes Society performance. For more information, call Marilyn Muston at 717-808-1249.

Last year’s event was canceled due to the pandemic, but now the 11th annual Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. “We’re going to have something for all age ranges, from children to adults and seniors,” said Lee Eckert, program coordinator for GEARS. “We’ll have multiple inflatables and bounce houses for the kids and live music for the adults to enjoy.” Additional activities will include pumpkin painting, a
soccer kick and a pumpkin miniature golf course. “Students from Elizabethtown Area Middle School will be running yard games for kids,” Eckert noted. “We’ll also have hayrides and barrel train rides.” The Elizabethtown Fire Department will be on site with several fire trucks, and a variety of vendors will sell food and crafts. Students from the MiniTHON club at Elizabethtown Area Middle School and High School will volunteer during the event. The Elizabethtown College wrestling team will run a haunted barn attraction, and the college’s Activity Fun Fair will feature a wide range of activities as well. “The theme of the fun fair is ‘Blooming Into the Streets,’” said Karen
Eberly, senior program coordinator for GEARS. “The students do the fun fair as a way of giving back to the public and providing community service, and for the past several years, we’ve combined our Fall Festival with their event and done them together.” Food options at the festival will include Auntie Anne’s pretzels, Savory’s Pumpkin Funnel Cakes and the What’s For Supper food truck. “The Elizabethtown Area Senior Center will also be selling traditional concession stand food like hamburgers,” Eckert stated. Eberly remarked that the event has evolved over the years from its original concept as a walk-through haunted attraction in a local park to a haunted fairgrounds before
becoming the Fall Festival. “It got to the point where what we were doing was almost too scary,” she explained. “We decided to change it up and make it a more family-friendly event.” She emphasized her appreciation for the event’s sponsor, T-Mobile, as well as the Elizabethtown Area School District for allowing use of the fairgrounds. “The Fall Festival is a really fun day,” she said. “ We’re going to have tons of activities and something for everyone’s budget. You can participate in the events that have a fee, or you can come and not spend a dollar.” For more information on the Fall Festival, visit www.getintogears.org or call 717-367-0355.

Veterans Program Offers Financial Assistance The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) will make financial assistance available to eligible children of veterans through the Educational Gratuity Program. This program is designed to provide financial assistance for those attending post-high school education or training at an approved institution in the commonwealth. Children eligible for the
assistance include those of honorably discharged veterans who have complete service-connected disabilities and served during a period of war or armed conflict. The assistance also applies to children of veterans who die or died in service during a period of war or armed conflict. Eligible children must be between the ages of 16 and 23, must be living within the common-
wealth of Pennsylvania five years prior to application, and must attend a school within the commonwealth. In addition, applicants must demonstrate a financial need. Payments will not exceed $500 per term or semester per qualified child to each approved educational institution over a total of eight terms or semesters. To apply, contact the Veterans
Affairs director in the county of residence. For more information about the program’s criteria, eligibility, and needed documentation, including a list of county Veterans Affairs directors, visit www.dmva.pa.gov/veterans affairs. Comfort Food For A Cause BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Hearts will be warmed by fellowship and tummies will be warmed by comfort food when Ruhl’s United Methodist Church holds a potpie dinner. The dinner will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. Dinner will be available from 4 to 7 p.m. or until sold out. “It’s going to be a sit-down dinner in our fellowship hall,” said Gail Ruhl, who is a coordinator of the church’s Mission Outreach Team. “We will also have meals available to go if people want to do that, or they can purchase potpie in quart containers to take home.” Along with potpie, the meal will include green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, a homemade dessert and a beverage. There are separate prices for adults and for children. Children age 5 and under may eat for free. Proceeds from the dinner will support a mission trip that church members will take in June of 2022. “We are still planning the destination,” Ruhl noted, adding that they are looking for destinations that may need extra volunteers due to devastation from extreme weather events. “We’re definitely going. We’re just not sure where yet.” Ruhl and her husband have
been the coordinators of the Mission Outreach Team for 13 years. Over the years, they have taken multigenerational groups throughout much of the United States. “ We’ve gone as far out as Oklahoma, and the farthest south we’ve gone is Lumberton, North Carolina,” she remarked. “ We’ve been to Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Maryland.” The group was unable to take a trip in 2020 or 2021 due to the pandemic. Ruhl said the potpie dinner provides the church not only with an opportunity to serve good food, but also with the chance to connect with the community. “We make really great potpie,” she stated. “Just come and enjoy the food, visit with friends and family, socialize and enjoy the fellowship. You can talk to people at our church about the church or inquire about our mission trips. It’s a very family-oriented dinner. We love when families come and bring their kiddos. It’s a nice, relaxing atmosphere.” For more information on the dinner, visit https:// ruhlschurch.org or call the church at 717-665-3400. Ruhl noted that any changes or updates determined by changing CDC guidelines will be posted on the website.

nized Kenneth Royer, inducting the Lebanon resident into the Floriculture Hall of Fame at the association’s annual convention in Orlando, Fla. He was honored for his contributions to the industry. Kenneth’s son Greg, chairman of Royer’s, accepted the award on his father’s behalf.. SAF noted that Kenneth was the first florist in the country to implement computerized systems for his stores and was among the first florists to import flowers directly from South America. In 1998, he published the book “Retailing Flowers Profitably,” and he has held dozens of seminars on topics from marketing to management and post-harvest care, according to an article on SAF’s website. Kenneth also served on the boards of SAF and the American Floral Endowment. Industry recognition is nothing new for Kenneth. In 1983, he was inducted into the American Academy of Floriculture and was named Pennsylvania Retail Florist of the Year. In 1986, SAF presented him with its Golden Bouquet Award. The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) offers a reminder to service members and veterans that one of their most important transitioning documents is their DD-214. Safeguarding this important military document should be a top priority. The DD-214 is a document of the United States Department of Defense, issued upon a military service member’s retirement, separation, or discharge from active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States. It contains information needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veterans’ organizations. Without this key document, there could be a substantial delay when veterans seek benefits earned through their service to their country. The DMVA will also assist with locating the DD215, which is used to correct

Hearing Protection Information Posted Listening at lower volumes is a great way to protect hearing and prevent NIHL. Audiologist Sharon A. Sandridge of the Head and Neck Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, notes that volume levels are too high on an individual’s headphones if people standing at arm’s length can hear the music. Another way to avoid NIHL is to purchase activity-specific headphones, earplugs, or earmuffs. These products are designed to block out specific noises, such as from backpack leaf blowers or hunting rifles, and could therefore offer hearing loss protection. Age-related hearing loss may not be preventable. However, individuals can protect themselves from NIHL, and efforts to do so should begin at a young age and continue throughout adulthood.
