SERVING

“Feed The Need” To Benefit Hershey Food Bank

Attendees will be able to sample dishes from some of the finest local restaurants at Feed the Need, which will take place on Sunday, Nov. 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hershey Country Club, 1000 E. Derry Road, Hershey. Proceeds from the event, which will also include a silent auction and live music, will benefit the Hershey Food Bank.

New this year is that local eateries will be featured in addition to Hershey Entertainment & Resorts restaurants. “You are not getting pretzel bites and dipping mustard. We try to get a variety (of foods),” said Leigh-Anne Dornberger, who handles public relations for the food bank. “Most of the chefs are awardwinning. The local restaurants have wonderful food as well.”

She noted that ticket holders can enjoy unlimited tastings. “You are getting your money’s worth. It’s limitless,” said Dornberger.

The venue includes two rooms where activities will take place. “We use the big ballroom, which is where the chefs are, and the people walk around from station to station,” Dornberger said, noting that the live auction will also take place in the ballroom. “Another room, Traditions, is where the silent auction is and the bar and dessert station.” Each attendee will receive two tickets for complimentary wine and beer. Also featured will be live music by the Lil’ Brother Band.

The live auction will include jewelry; a signed jersey by professional soccer player Christian Pulisic, a Hershey native; a beer-pairing dinner for 10 people by Englewood Brewing of Hershey; and a week’s stay at a vacation home in Maine. The silent auction will feature gift baskets with items donated by local businesses, such as restaurants and nail salons. There will also be a Christmas-themed basket.

This year’s fundraiser marks the return of an in-person event. “This is our 11th year. In 2020, we did two virtual events, which were wine pairings. One was wine and cheese pairing, and the other was a wine and chocolate pairing,” explained Dornberger. “In 2021, we did an open house at the food bank, and it was outdoors on Giving Tuesday. It was more of a celebration for 10 years (of Feed the Need)

and thanking the community. We had live music and people could take tours of the food bank, and we had a QR code if people wanted to make a donation.”

The Hershey Food Bank, 120 E. Derry Road, Hershey, distributes food twice monthly to approximately 250 families in Derry Township. The number of families relying on the food bank has increased each month in 2022. In addition, the food bank provides traditional holiday food at Thanksgiving and Christmas to families in need. Christmas presents and gift certificates for children’s clothing are included with the Christmas food distribution. To learn more, visit www.hersheyfoodbank.com.

Tickets to Feed the Need must be purchased in advance at https://e.givesmart.com/events/ssO. A link to purchase tickets is also available at the food bank website and at www.facebook.com/FeedThe NeedHershey. People who are unable to attend the event but would like to bid on silent auction items may visit the GiveSmart website to register.

Navy Veteran To Speak At Roundtable

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown.

World War II Navy veteran Jack McSherry Jr. will share his

accounts of fighting in the Battle of the Atlantic and patrolling the Mediterranean after the war. McSherry, from Conestoga, followed the path of his father and two older brothers when he joined the Navy.

Trained as a quartermaster, McSherry piloted his craft

through harbors and waterways littered with burned warships and supply vessels, while wary of unexploded bombs that might be below the surface of the water. He nearly perished in the icy waters of the North Atlantic on his first seafaring mission aboard a minesweeper and noted that even his adventures on shore during leave had harrowing moments.

The meeting is open to the public, and no registration is required. Additional information can be found at www. centralpaww2roundtable.org.

Lionettes Will Hold Meeting

The Londonderry Lionettes will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. at the Londonderry Firehouse, 2655 Foxianna Road, Middletown. Guest speaker Brian Collett, an environmental education specialist, will present a program on Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area.

For more information, call 717-944-6518.

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for World War II veterans, authors, historians, and citizens to share their knowledge and experiences related to the war.

Blood Donor Eligibility Criteria Updated

The American Red Cross invites those who spent time in the U.K., Ireland, or France and have never tried to give blood due to concerns over variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), related to mad cow disease, to give blood. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration updated its blood donor eligibility guidance on vCJD, eliminating the deferral for those who spent time in the U.K., Ireland, and France between 1980 and 2001.

In alignment with FDA changes, the Red Cross began accepting donations from individuals who have not tried giving blood before due to the

prior donation criteria. In combination with prior eligibility updates in 2020 for those who spent time in other European countries, this new change effectively eliminates the deferral related to vCJD for all donors.

More people, especially those with type O blood, are urged to donate. Book a time to give by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting www.redcrossblood.org, or by calling 800-733-2767. As a thank you, donors who give through Monday, Oct. 31, will be emailed an electronic gift card to a merchant of their choice.

Sheetz Grant Supports Child Hunger Programs

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank recently announced that it is receiving a $127,000 grant from Sheetz for the Kidz, a charitable organization driven by the employees of Sheetz Inc., to help provide hunger-relief to children in central Pennsylvania through the food bank’s summer feeding and youth hunger programs.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank continues to address the increased need due to the pandemic and current inflationary challenges. Many families are working hard to make ends meet but are still not making enough to cover all expenses, leaving many children without the meals they need to thrive. In central Pennsylvania, nearly one in seven children are facing hunger.

Community Shred Day Set

PA Central Federal Credit Union (FCU) will host a Shred It Event on Friday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of PA Central’s Palmyra branch, 1220 E. Main St., Palmyra. The event will be held rain or shine. PA Central FCU members and the community are invited to the event to have any unneeded documents securely destroyed.

Shredding documents protects people’s privacy and can prevent identity theft. Shredding will be done on site.

The free event is part of a

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank helps to provide more than 2.5 million meals annually to children in need through its network of local agency partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens and meal programs. During the summer of 2022, the food bank served nearly 71,000 meals across 62 summer feeding sites in 12 counties with assistance from the Sheetz grant.

This summer, Brittany Funcheon, executive director of Sheetz for the Kidz, visited the Boys and Girls Club of Harrisburg, which was one of the summer feeding sites. Also in attendance was Mark Hawthorne, executive director, Boys and Girls Club of Harrisburg, and Joe Arthur, executive director of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.

Funding will also be used for the food bank’s school pantry and backpack programs. The food bank is a member of Feeding America and is one of 27 food banks to receive this grant from Sheetz for the Kidz.

Hershey Symphony Concert To Feature Cedel

The Hershey Symphony Orchestra and Hershey native and Metropolitan Opera singer Brandon Cedel will present “Fall Classics” on Friday, Oct. 28. The performance will start at 8 p.m. at The Hershey Theatre, 15 E. Caracas Ave.

Bass-baritone Cedel, a graduate of Hershey High School, now performs in well-known opera houses in Europe and the United States. At The Hershey Theatre, he will perform famous pieces for baritones from Rossini’s “Barber of Seville,” Bellini’s “La

Sonnambula” (“The Sleepwalker”), and Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” and “The Marriage of Figaro.” The performance will also include Brahms’ “Academic Festival Overture” and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, “Pastoral,” which was featured in both the original and updated versions of Disney’s feature-length animated classic film “Fantasia.”

Cedel is a recent graduate of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and is currently an ensemble member of Oper Frankfurt. His roles with the company in the 2018-19 season include the Speaker in “Die Zauberfloete,” Angelotti in “Tosca,” Brander in “La Damnation de Faust,” Giovanni in “Il Corsaro,” and the Messenger in “Oedipus Rex.”

Tickets range in price, with discounts available for seniors and students. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.hersheysymphony.org.

AACA Museum Sets Annual Festival

The Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Museum will host Autos and Ales on Friday, Nov. 4, from 6 to 10 p.m. Now in its 12th year, the annual event is one of central Pennsylvania’s oldest indoor craft beer festivals. The festivities will take place on the three-floor galleries of the award-winning Smithsonian Affiliate transportation museum.

The event will feature 50 breweries from across Pennsylvania and beyond, including many first-time participants; most participating businesses will offer multiple products for sampling. Autos and Ales will also include live music by Smooth Like Clyde and food prepared by C&J Catering. Each participant will receive a

commemorative pint glass.

In addition to attending the event, those who purchase VIP tickets may attend a gathering from 6 to 7 p.m. featuring the debut of the 2022 event’s signature beverage, Merlette Swan, a Schwarzbier from Englewood Brewing of Hershey. The name is based on the swans found on the traditional Cadillac crest.

The event is a fundraiser for the museum, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational institution. It also includes a giveaway drawing to support the JDRF. Each participating brewery is asked to provide something for the drawing.

For more information and tickets, visit www.aacamuseum .org/autos-ales/.
