racking coconuts with rocks and making bowls of the shells. Chewing out the sweetness of a piece of sugar cane. Building a rough shelter with branches, vines, and leaves. Such were the hands-on experiences that were part of a unit on Johann Wyss’ “The Swiss Family Robinson for middle-schoolers at Hershey Christian Academy. Although written in the early 1800s, the survival classic is timeless for its celebration of family resourcefulness, reverence for God, love for adventure, and meticulous descriptions of plant and animal species. As part of the unit, students made rope baskets, built balsa wood treehouses, and learned about unfamiliar things like cochineal beetles, land crabs, and cassava

bread. Everyone picked a favorite character and wrote point-of-view essays about goal setting and achievement. They watched instructional videos about experiences like tapping rubber trees, irrigating with bamboo, and the pigeon post. As one of the final activities of the unit, students watched the 1960 Disney movie; the students unanimously decided that they preferred the book. According to many travel polls, travelers are choosing small-town destinations for getaways and vacations. Not just now, because of COVID, but into the spring and summer of 2021. Fewer crowds, less traffic, unique culture, and friendly locals make visiting obscure locations more desirable than ever. As the editor of Where & When Pennsylvania, a publication of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), I quickly learned that many of us have little idea of what’s going on in our surrounding area, let alone across the commonwealth. That’s why we’re launching a new series in our community papers called EXPLORE Across Town, Across PA. Each month we’ll feature a town in our coverage area, as well as a destination somewhere in Pennsylvania. Along the way, we hope to show that you don’t have to travel far to find great restaurants, unique shops, amazing outdoor locations, and world-class historical sites. Traveling locally

Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, cofounded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve greatgrandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-today employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been
drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna.

Protect yourself and those around you. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.

Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

Former Knee Pain Sufferer Shares:
Chatter
“I was looking at surgery… But now there’s no need.”
Tonya Bibb • 717-623-2767 tkcondran@gmail.com
New Knee Pain Workshop Helps Local People Get Back to Normal Naturally, Without Unnecessary Pain Pills, Injections, or Surgeries. Are you careful how you move because you’re afraid your knee might “give out”? Do you find yourself taking Tylenol, Aleve or Advil just to get through the day? Are you missing out on family time because of knee pain? Have you changed the way you do everyday activities like going up and down stairs or getting in and out of a car? Do you try to just “keep going” but you feel limited in what you can do? Do you feel worn out and held back because of your knee? If you answered “YES” to any of the above questions, the Knee Pain Workshop may be a life changing event for you… Hello, Knee pain can completely destroy your life… we’ve seen it many times. It can make you avoid the things you once loved doing such as taking walks with the dog, spending time outdoors with the family, or even doing simple household chores. I’ve seen many folks afraid to do everyday things like going up and down the stairs or getting out of the car because they don’t know if their knee is going to “give out” and make them fall. Knee pain can: • Make you feel like you’re not your normal self… • It can zap and take away your energy… • It can make you feel depressed as you see other people doing the things you wish you could be doing… It can be a downward spiral. Not good. Here at Madden Physical Therapy we’ve helped literally hundreds of knee pain sufferers cancel their surgery, get off of pain meds and anti-inflammatories…and get back to feeling like their normal self again. Naturally. That’s why we’re hosting a Knee Pain Workshop on Wednesday, November 4th at 7pm right here at Madden Physical Therapy in Lower Paxton. If you’ve been told you have arthritis, or bone-on-bone on your X-ray and you absolutely need surgery… here’s some of what you’ll learn: 1. The Top 3 Causes of Knee Pain that can lead to a Knee Replacement and a long recovery. (One of them you won’t believe…) 2. The #1 Single Biggest Mistake that Knee Pain sufferers make that can lead directly to surgery. 3. A sure-fire way to get your life back and pick the right treatment for the cause of your pain (and save you time and money). 4. What successful treatment and permanent relief look like without the side effects of unnecessary medications, injections or surgery. “I had an issue with my left knee that I knew would require surgery - I had surgery on my right knee years ago and thought it was the same thing. I wasn’t sure if PT would do anything, but I gave it 100% effort. Back to normal now, no surgery!” - Glenn M. So, if you want to get your life back and handle the cause of your knee pain, here’s how to register to learn more. Call Heather at 717-210-9945 today. Tell her you would like to “Save your seat for the Knee Pain Workshop.” To make sure all attendees questions are answered, space is limited to 20 seats… and seats fill up FAST. The first 10 registrants will receive a FREE copy of the Top 3 Exercises for Knee Pain when they come to the workshop. I’m looking forward to seeing you there and helping you become your “normal self” again. Chad Madden Physical Therapist – Paid Advertisement – R064691

VROCP Plans Takeout Dedication Ceremony Dinner Fundraiser Planned Vision Resources of Central Pennsylvania (VROCP) and Bonefish Grill will offer the ninth annual Evening in the Shadows blindness awareness and fundraising event on Tuesday, Nov. 10, beginning at 6 p.m. Normally a group event, Evening in the Shadows will be offered this year through curbside pickup or delivery of the meal from Bonefish Grill in Camp Hill. Guests will enjoy a five-course meal while blindfolded. They will need to rely upon senses other than sight as they experience dining as one who is visually impaired. The meal will include items from Bonefish Grill’s menu as well as some dishes created just for Evening in the Shadows. Three wine pairings will be included, as well as a lightweight blindfold and the link to the online live event where partici-
pants will be guided through the meal. The menu is available by request, but no substitutions can be made. There is a fee per person. Reservations may be made at https://vrocp2020shadows.event brite.com or by calling Cheryl Cuddy at 717-238-2531. The final opportunity to order a meal is Monday, Nov. 2. Proceeds from this event will directly benefit the programs and services of VROCP. The mission of VROCP is to facilitate independence of, enrich the quality of life of and empower individuals who are visually impaired or otherwise disabled through prevention, employment and educational awareness programs. The agency’s programs extend to Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin and Perry counties.

The half-hour ceremony will begin promptly at 3 p.m. During the ceremony, Nathan Russo, a member of Boy Scout Troop 594 of Middletown, will dedicate the field to the U.S. armed forces. The ceremony is open to the public, and patriotic face masks will be given to the first 100 attendees. Reservations are not needed, but questions may be emailed to russoeagle project@comcast.net.
