In early January, Clyde Snyder of Lancaster Township was asked by the president of Vietnam Veterans of America whether there were any Merchant Marines buried in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Snyder, who founded the Vet21 Salute Honor Guard of Lancaster, looked into the situation, and when he learned there were 90 Merchant Marine veterans there, he did the research and raised the money to place a Merchant Marine monument. The ceremony dedicating that memorial was held on June 4.

In April, Snyder learned that no memorial to Vietnam veterans existed in the cemetery. “I said, ‘I’ve got to do this for my brothers,’” recalled Snyder, who set about raising the $7,700 needed to fund the memorial under the sponsor-

ship of Blankets of Honor, a nonprofit that presents veterans with blankets depicting the branch they served in.

On Oct. 8, at noon, a ceremony was held at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery to dedicate the memorial. The event opened with a flyover by the Liberty War Bird Association Huey, a restored Vietnam helicopter now operating as a flying museum based at the Lancaster Airport. Mike Caimi, one of the founders of the Liberty War Birds, noted that taking part in the flyover fulfills goals of the organization. “The mission of the Liberty War Bird Association is to honor the legacy of our Vietnam veterans and provide a healing link to their past,” explained Caimi. “What better way to accomplish that goal than to participate in the dedication of the Vietnam veter-

ans’ memorial at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, a hallowed site where not only are a number of Vietnam veterans buried, but two of our own recently deceased volunteers have been interred?” Caimi reported that he was on board for the flyover. “It was a solemn moment for our flight crew,” he recalled.

Amanda Spangenberg played the bagpipes and Snyder spoke. Manny Acuna of Blankets of Honor also spoke. Acuna later reflected on the importance of the memorial at the Vets Breakfast Club event in Bird-in-Hand on Oct. 15. “This monument (was) dedicated to you guys who served and the ones who didn’t come home,” he said, recalling the event. “On my way home (from the dedication), I just cried because you guys don’t have that recognition, (but) every day that we

The invocation and prayer was given by the Rev. Grover DeVault, a Vietnam veteran. Speakers also included Vietnam veteran Chieu V Le, Dick Hoxworth, Sen. Ryan Aument, and Rep. Frank Ryan. An honorable riderless horse was provided by Woerth It Hollow, an official nonprofit equine-assisted therapy organization for veterans and people with disabilities. Sara Hodgkiss, veteran and Woerth It Hollow CEO called it an honor to provide the services.

Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard oversaw flag duties at the event, Vet21 Salute provided a rifle volley, and Snyder played taps.

Snyder made special note of donors Carole Wiker, Lorie Kiser, Ken Pederson, and Abel & Son Roofing & Siding.

While the show is not juried, crafters must complete an application to participate. “Everything is handmade. We don’t accept any resellers or home-based businesses,” Groscost noted.

New this year, four food trucks will be on hand during the show: On My Grind Coffee, Mamma’s Meltz, ShreddRRz and East Coast Mini Donuts.

This year’s event is being presented by the Lower Dauphin Band Boosters. In the past, the show was coordinated by Ken Kulina, baseball coach, who organized the annual craft fair for more than 30 years. “It always benefited the baseball team. (The baseball players) helped the vendors set up and ran a concession the day of the event,” said Groscost. “(Kulina) was the sole manager (of the craft fair) up until 2019, which was his last year.”

She noted that the craft show was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic and it was not held in 2021 as the transition took place between the two organizers. “The Boosters are very excited and proud to carry on this annual tradition,” Groscost said, adding that LDHS students will volunteer on the day of the event.

The show will feature some of the same vendors from prior years, as well as new crafters.

“We are welcoming many newcomers with the hopes of building a strong core of crafters and artisans for years to come,” Groscost stated.

Vendors pay a fee to rent a space, the proceeds of which will benefit the Lower Dauphin Band Boosters, whose mission is “to support our band, our musicians and the talented musical faculty that guides them through their musicianship and performance events.”

The Band Boosters is predominantly composed of parents of students who are band members. “Band members can be concert band, marching band, jazz band, indoor drumline and the middle school band,” said Groscost. Keith Richardson is the high school band director, and Greg Hutchison is the middle school band director.

“The Boosters want to thank the school district for letting us have the craft fair again this year and for their support,” Groscost added.

For more information about the craft fair, search for “Lower Dauphin Band Boosters” on Facebook and choose “Events” or contact the Band Boosters at ldbbcraftfair@gmail.com.

Seeing The World In Miniature

Visit the Masonic Village & Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club, and you’ll step inside another world. “It’s taking the world and putting it into miniature,” said John Monti, club vice president, describing the 1,600 feet of track in seven display areas. “You could look at the same scene six times and see something new every time.” The club will hold an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, and Sunday, Nov. 6, at the club building on Freemason Drive on the grounds of Masonic Village at Elizabethtown.

For 25 years, the club members have been sharing their passion for trains with the community. The display features seven gauges, ranging from standard scale to Z scale. The latter layout is so tiny, it’s housed in an open briefcase. “It’s very unusual to have seven scales under one roof,” said club treasurer Bill Fishel. Although the club is housed on the grounds of Masonic Village, its 50 members are about equally split between residents of the retirement community and the wider region, Monti said.

The elaborate layouts fill the building, with scenes of northwest, southeast and central Pennsylvania, as well as local attractions such as the Star Barn. A working replica of a Pittsburgh incline operates in one area, while another area features holiday scenes that change throughout the year. The club members note that the layout is always evolving, with plans for redoing a warehouse district and swapping out a cityscape with an HO-scale amusement park.

“It’s never done,” said club president Gary Latshaw. “This is 25 years of work, and it’s always changing.”

Most of the club members have been into trains since their youth, said Latshaw. The club provides members with a space to indulge in their hobby without having to set up an elaborate layout in their home, but it also serves another purpose.

“I have learned so much from these guys,” said club member David Newhart. “The club has kept me busy, and it’s created a group of friends.”

At a typical open house, eight or nine trains may be running at one time. “When

you see this layout running, you can’t believe it,” said Monti, who noted that visitors should look out, down and up, because trains run overhead the display as well. “We’ve even gotten down and looked at the layouts from a child’s point of view, so we know there are things they can see from their vantage point,” he shared.

Club members will be on hand at the open house to answer questions, fix derailments and promote the club, which is always looking for new members. The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month, and club applications will be available at the open house.

Admission to the open house is free, but donations will be accepted to keep the display running. Additional open houses will be held on Saturdays, Dec. 3, 10 and 17; on Sunday, Dec. 4; and on the first Saturday and Sunday of the month from January through April. Times vary, and a complete schedule may be found at www.mvetrainclub.com or by following the club on Facebook at “MV&E Model Railroad Club.”

Local Retirement Community Receives Honor

Retirement Communities has been certified as a Great Place to Work by the Great Place to Work Institute.

The Great Place to Work certification process considered surveys completed by all coworkers at Country Meadows’ 10 campuses and evaluated more than 60 elements of coworkers’ experiences on the job. These included employee pride in the organization’s community impact, belief that their work makes a difference and feeling their work has special meaning. Rankings are based on co-workers’ experiences, no matter who they are or what they do.

Using this feedback, the Great Place to Work Trust Index Survey assesses organizations on five principlescredibility, fairness, respect, camaraderie and pride - that define the overall concept of what an employee views as a great workplace.

The president and CEO of

Country Meadows is Michael Leader. Leader’s parents, former Pennsylvania Gov. George Leader and his wife, Mary Jane, founded Country Meadows Retirement Communities. The Leader family has been in the profession of senior living since 1962, and its main emphasis has always been to provide high-quality services at reasonable costs through a well-trained and highly motivated team of professionals.

Today, Country Meadows has grown to nine locations in Pennsylvania and one campus in Frederick, Md., employing nearly 2,000 co-workers who serve more than 2,000 residents. Locally, Country Meadows Retirement Communities has locations in Hershey, Mechanicsburg and York.

More information is available at www.countrymeadows.com.

TCRPC Receives $100,000 Grant

Tri-County Regional Planning Commission (TCRPC) received a $100,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to create an Active Transportation Plan (ATP) that is designed to make walking and biking safer and easier in Cumberland, Dauphin, and Perry counties.

TCRPC will work with local municipalities, businesses, PennDOT, and other stakeholders to create the ATP’s policies and infrastructure. The plan will also serve as a guide for municipalities to develop their own active transportation strategies and will become part of the Harrisburg Area Transportation Study’s (HATS) Regional Backbone.

As the Harrisburg area has continued to grow and develop over the past decade, there is a need for comprehensive transportation planning that takes pedestrians and bicyclists into account. With support from this funding, the ATP will provide a

comprehensive network for non-motorized transportation that makes connections to important places and communities in the region.

The grant, awarded through DCNR’s Community Conservation Partnerships Program, is part of $90 million recently announced for 330 projects across Pennsylvania that are designed to create new recreational opportunities, conserve natural resources, and help revitalize local communities. While the DCNR funding will be used for off-road planning, additional PennDOT funding will be used for the on-road portion of the ATP.

In the near future, TCRPC staff will begin outreach to municipalities, businesses, and community members to begin the planning process. TCRPC administers the HATS program, which is the federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for Cumberland, Dauphin, and Perry counties.
