Dedication Ceremony Planned A ceremony will be held on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, to dedicate Memorial Field, the lighted baseball field at Little Hollywood Park, 393 Little Hollywood Drive, Middletown. The half-hour ceremony will begin promptly at 3 p.m. During the ceremony, Nathan Russo, a member of Boy Scout Troop 594 of Middletown, will dedicate the field to the U.S. armed forces. As his Eagle Scout project, Russo recently installed five flagpoles at the field and purchased one flag each for the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. He raised more than $4,000 in donations from the community for the purchase of the flagpoles and flags as well as installation and landscaping. The ceremony is open to the public, and patriotic face masks will be given to the first 100 attendees. Reservations are not needed, but questions may be emailed to russoeagleproject@comcast.net.

Lower Dauphin Student Builds Tiny House A high school student was recently honored by Lower Dauphin Communities That Care and Hummelstown Police for doing the right thing. Emma Dickinson, a junior at Lower Dauphin High School, recognized that people come from across the country to seek treatment for Lyme disease

have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude or outstanding efforts. The program provides a way to recognize good deeds and reinforce exemplary behavior. The residents of the Lower Dauphin School District can see

with her doctor, Dr. Noonan. So she decided to build a tiny house, where patients can stay while being treated. She started the project as a freshman in high school and made major progress on constructing the house during the COVID-19 school closure. For details about the project and photos of the tiny house, readers may visit www.sites .google.com/ldsdstudents.org /teenytinyittybittyhouse/home. Nominated by her school counselor, Farren Schmidt, Emma was recognized with a $25 gift card, a Do the Right Thing T-shirt and certificate and a Papa John’s pizza coupon. This month’s program sponsor was Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home. The Do the Right Thing program is modeled after a successful national program. Now in its 14th year, the program recognizes students in the Lower Dauphin community who

the many good things the young people of their community are doing. This program allows the community to thank its children for doing the right thing. School staff members and police officers typically nominate students whose positive actions come to their attention, but any adult over the age of 18 can nominate a child. A volunteer committee reviews the student nominations on a monthly basis and selects a winner for each month. For more information, readers may contact Angela Durantine at adurantine@ldsd.org.

Recognizing Lower Dauphin High School student Emma Dickinson (second from left) as September’s Do the Right Thing winner are (from left) Angela Durantine from Lower Dauphin Communities That Care (CTC), school counselor Farren Schmidt and Hummelstown Police Officer Jamie Kopinetz.

Emma Dickinson, Lower Dauphin High School junior, built a tiny house for where out-of-town patients can stay while receiving treatment for Lyme disease.

Attention Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers! Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good.

Tonya Bibb 717-623-2767 tkcondran@gmail.com

Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive?

Hi, everyone! It’s officially the holiday season! Before you know it, it will be Thanksgiving Day! Time flies by so fast. This next piece made me cry. It is so true. I miss my kids being little. I wish I could rock them to sleep once again. But at the ages of 37 and 32, I don’t think they would let me. Boy, do I ever wish they were 7 and 2 again. I would hold on and never let go! The Last Time From the moment you hold your baby in your arms, You will never be the same. You might long for the person you were before, When you had freedom and time, And nothing in particular to worry about. You will know tiredness like you never knew it before, And days will run into days that are exactly the same, Full of feedings and burping, Nappy changes and crying, Whining and fighting, Naps or lack of naps, It might seem like a never-ending cycle. But don’t forget … There is a last time for everything. There will come a time when you will feed Your baby for the very last time. They will fall asleep on you after a long day And it will be the last time you ever hold your sleeping child. One day you will carry them on your hip then set them down, And never pick them up that way again. You will scrub their hair in the bath one night And from that day on they will want to bathe alone. They will hold your hand to cross the road, Then never reach for it again. They will creep into your room at midnight for cuddles, And it will be the last night you ever wake to this. One afternoon you will sing “The Wheels on the Bus” And do all the actions, Then never sing them that song again. They will kiss you goodbye at the school gate, The next day they will ask to walk to the gate alone. You will read a final bedtime story and wipe your last dirty face. They will run to you with arms raised for the very last time. The thing is, you won’t even know

it’s that last time Until there are no more times. And even then, it will take you a while to realize. So while you are living in these times, Remember there are only so many of them And when they are gone, you will yearn for just one more day of them. For one last time. -Author Unknown Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to my neighbor Greg Bell of Royalton! His cake-day is Nov. 4. I hope your day is packed full of goodness, Greg! Care-A-Van Volunteers Needed The Middletown Care-A-Van is in need of volunteer drivers to transport senior citizens and qualified handicapped residents within the Middletown Area School District to and from doctor appointments and grocery shopping. Volunteers will have the opportunity to build new friendships. The only requirements needed to drive the van are a current driver’s license with a good driving record and the desire to take care of the riders. Volunteers may select the weekdays they wish to help; full-day and halfday options are available within the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Currently, transportation is provided for one passenger at a time. The van is disinfected after each use, hand sanitizer is provided for riders, and face masks are required. The drivers socially distance themselves from the riders, who are in the backseat of the van. Drivers also take their temperature and that of the riders using the provided touchless infrared thermometer. Call 717-580-8332 for more information. Food Pantry Services The Middletown Interfaith Food Pantry is open Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is located at 201 Wyoming St. (the old Bob & Romaine’s grocery store) in See Chatter pg 4

Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Before coming to Madden, I was having pain in my hip and leg from Sciatica, which impacted my daily activities, such as sitting, standing and walking. I was not sleeping well, and could not get comfortable. Now my pain has decreased and I’m now able to move freely and confidently, and my pain level has dropped and I can now sleep well.” -Denise G. Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life… I’ve seen it many times. ✔ It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… ✔ It can take your focus away on enjoying your life… like spending time with your children or grandchildren… ✔ It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… ✔ It can ruin your travel plans… ✔ And it can take away your ability to live life… having to rely on others… or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting… not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems… and life problems. Here at Madden Physical Therapy the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 1000’s of people who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica… it’s our specialty.

So by request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Madden Physical Therapy in Lower Paxton on Wednesday, November 18th at 7:00 PM. If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: ✔ The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… ✔ The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… ✔ A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) ✔ How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… ✔ What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call to register at 717-210-9945. When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 15 seats available for the event… so if you would like to attend, be sure to register now… Call 717-210-9945. How Much Is It to Attend? The event is FREE. No cost to you… As a Special Bonus… the first 10 people to call and register for the event will receive a free copy of our book “Back to Normal: Natural Healing without Medications, Injections and Surgery”. Looking forward to seeing you there, Chad Madden, Physical Therapist Madden Physical Therapy – Paid Advertisement – R065054

In the near future, the site plans to offer income tax services. Those who need assistance may call 717-944-5668. Fact of the Week Falling air pressure causes pain in birds’ ears, so if birds are flying low to the ground it almost always mean a thunderstorm is coming. Thank You Thanks to Barbara Richards of Londonderry Township for the Food for Thought! That is so nice! Food for Thought If every morning, you can find a reason to say, “Yes, it’s going to be a beautiful day,” And every day, you find a reason to say, “Yes, it is a beautiful day,” And every night, you find a reason to say, “Yes, it was a beautiful day,” Then one day, you’ll look back and easily say, “Yes, it was a beautiful life.” -Doe Zantamata

to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17-room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart). Dining is just as varied. the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial

“Screen Time-Out” Program Launched Prevent Blindness, a volunteer eye health organization, recently launched a new awareness campaign designed to help reduce the effects of digital eye strain. With many people spending more time viewing digital screens during the pandemic, the new “Screen Time-Out” program is a series of social media graphics reminding consumers to give their eyes a break. Staring at screens for long periods

of time can cause eye strain. Prevent Blindness encourages people to take a screen timeout every 20 minutes and give their eyes a break. Graphics for the campaign will run on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. A new webpage has also been created to provide consumers with information on digital eye strain, blue light, and more related to helping to protect one’s vision at http://pre ventblindness.org/screen-time-out.

A Veteran Stand Down will occur on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at JFT Recovery and Veteran Support Services, 300 Market St., Lemoyne. Representatives of a multitude of organizations that help veterans will be on hand to provide

outreach and information to local veterans. Free food and refreshments will also be served. Community members are invited to join in celebrating and supporting veterans. For more details, readers may call JFT at 717-695-6253.

This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.

Get the care you need, when you need it, in the safest way possible. At Lancaster General Health, your health is our top priority. Don’t delay your annual check-up, or care for chronic conditions and new health concerns. Remembering Pauline H. Engle, Co-Founder Of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. WE SELL & SERVICE NAME BRAND APPLIANCES FROM:

Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey.

When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected,

a veterinarian specialist and a combat medical specialist, with five different infantry platoons utilizing specialized military working dogs. For his service, he received 18 combat-related decorations and 19 other decorations related to his military service. The meeting is open to the public, though donations will be accepted.
