School (MCCS) will present “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” in the school gymnasium, 629 N. Holly St., Elizabethtown, on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9, at 7 p.m., with an additional matinee performance on Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. Based on the children’s book written in 1950 by C.S. Lewis, the plot revolves around the four Pevensie siblings: Lucy, played by Claire Hixon; Edmund, played by Malachi Shenk; Susan, played by Alana Kelley; and Peter, played by Samuel Dougherty. The children have been removed from London following a wartime evacuation to the large, countryside home of a friend of their parents. Lucy, the youngest sibling, opens a wardrobe to discover the fantasyland of Narnia, where it is always winter, but never Christmas. “(Lucy) is very adventur-

Lucy’s siblings join her on subsequent visits to Narnia and encounter mythical creatures including a White Witch - portrayed by Brynne Smith - who rules the land instead of the rightful king, Aslan the Lion, portrayed by Austin Shaeffer. A battle ensues as the children adventure with Aslan and other creatures to restore Narnia to its proper ruler. “I like how Aslan has authority and the other creatures look up to him,” Austin said. “One thing I like about Peter is that he is always trying to keep track of his siblings. He’s very caring and tries to protect them,” said Samuel. “My favorite part about playing him is that I get to tease Edmund, and he is played by a good friend of mine, so that’s a lot of fun.” Kelli Robinson, who is directing the MCCS production of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” said that the cast features students in grades six through 12 - a diversity of ages that she appreciates as the students have a chance to learn from and interact with one another. “This show really identifies well with the faith of

“C.S. Lewis wrote this so that younger kids, when confronted with darker aspects of their faith and life, wouldn’t be as scared,” added Robinson. “It’s definitely going to be a family-friendly show.” Additional members of the cast include Benjamin Gerlach as Mr. Beaver, Katelyn Niedwick as Mrs. Beaver, Vince Clay as Tumnus, Jordan DeGroft as Fenris Ulf, Kylie Masters as Unicorn, Enya Smith as Centaur, Jackson Mohr as Dwarf, Joshua Humbert as Father Christmas, Alivia Rutt as Elf, and Isabel Robles as White Stag. Avalyn Hostetter, Summer Sturgis, and Kasai Hines will portray Aslan’s followers, and Emma Nicklas, Timothy McKelvey, Aaron Smith, and Bethany Copeland will portray the Witch’s Army. Tickets may be purchased at a discounted rate in advance by calling the school at 717-367-1649 or for full price at the door prior to performances. Prices will be discounted for students and senior citizens, and admission is free for children age 3 and younger. Children who come dressed as woodland creatures for the matinee performance will receive a free snack from the concession stand. For more information, readers may visit www.mcchristianschool.com.

The Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association (CATRA) will hold Walkin’ the Dog - A John Greenwood Memorial Dog Walk on Saturday, Nov. 9, at East Hanover Township Community Park in Grantville. Supporters can arrive anytime between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to enjoy the threetenths mile interactive dog walk, have lunch, shop for special bargains, and visit a photo booth. The rain-or-shine event is handicapped-accessible. A suggested donation amount has been set. All proceeds will support CATRA in memory of Harrisburg native John Greenwood, a heart transplant recipient and a longtime CATRA volunteer, coach, and rider. Those who cannot attend in person will be able to take a virtual walk online, with more information available at www.catra.net. John, the son of Bob and Barb Greenwood, suddenly became ill with cardiomyopathy while running crosscountry at Penn Tech College. He was able to finish his senior year with an implanted L-VAD, and he received a new heart months after graduation. He worked as an engineer for five years and always returned to CATRA to volunteer. He passed away in 2016. Barb is organizing the dog walk.

This organization lets donors find classroom projects they would like to support and allows them to give money to those specific projects. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) awarded its 2019 Tri-State Architectural Excellence Design Award to the Office for Planning and Architecture (OPA), a Harrisburg firm. The award recognized OPA’s authorship of the Harrisburg Comprehensive Plan. The Harrisburg Comprehensive Plan received the highest level of recognition of any regional or urban design project. Bret Peters, AIA, principal at the Office for Planning and Architecture, accepted the award at a ceremony in Albany, N.Y. OPA received one of only six Bronze Awards selected from 160 submissions in eight categories. The AIA awards recognize significant achievement for design and contributions to a better and more sustainable built environment. The Harrisburg Comprehensive Plan identifies opportunities to improve management of the city’s built environment. It addresses development of new regional and community commercial districts and conservation of historic assets, parks, and open spaces. The plan identifies the potential for a “maintenance industry” as a source of jobs and wealth creation. The plan seeks to increase local ownership, management, and upkeep of properties in the city. The Harrisburg Comprehensive Plan identifies three new planned commercial development areas. The plan’s recommendations include a proposed civic center adjacent to the new transit-oriented development area around the Harrisburg Transportation Center. The new civic center site would connect the residential Hill District to the downtown through the new Paxton Creek Greenway. The new greenway would repurpose land along the largely defunct industrial strip within the Paxton Creek

Local historians Scott Mingus and Cooper Wingert will present a program on their new book, “Targeted Tracks: The Cumberland Valley Railroad in the Civil War, 1861-1865,” at a meeting of the Camp Curtin Historical Society at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. The meeting will be held at the National Civil War Museum, 1 Lincoln Circle, Reservoir Park, Harrisburg. The Civil War was the first conflict in which railroads played a major role. The Cumberland Valley Railroad had an important strategic role by connecting Hagerstown, Md., to Harrisburg. Its location enhanced its importance during some of the

Civil War’s most critical campaigns. Confederates hampered the Northern war effort by tearing up its tracks, seizing or torching Union supplies, and laying waste to warehouses, engine houses, and passenger depots. The line was under direct threat by invading Confederates during the 1862 Antietam Campaign and suffered serious damage during the 1863 Gettysburg Campaign and the 1864 Raid on Chambersburg. This presentation is free and open to the public. For more information, readers may contact 717-732-5115 or genjenkins @aol.com.
