Donations Sought For Operation Christmas Child Hope Springs Farm, 201 Trail Road, Hershey, is again taking part in Operation Christmas Child (OCC), an annual program that provides shoeboxes full of gifts for children in need throughout the world. The public is invited to participate in the effort by obtaining a cardboard or plastic shoebox or picking up an OCC box at the farm, filling the box with small gifts and returning it to the farm. Someone from the farm will take the donated boxes to Encounter Church of Palmyra from Tuesday, Nov. 17, through Thursday, Nov 19. The church will send the boxes to Samaritan’s Purse, the Christian relief organization that oversees the OCC program. Participants are asked to fill their box with gifts for a girl or boy in one of three age categories: 2 to 4, 5 to 9 and 10 to 14. Suggested shoebox gifts include combs, flip-flops, sunglasses, hair bows, friendship bracelets, tote bags and purses, foam balls, finger puppets, plastic dinosaurs, play cars, interactive toys with batteries, coloring books and crayons, stickers and watercolor painting sets. It is recommended that each box contain a “wow” item. “Wow” items include a soccer ball with a manual air pump, a stuffed animal, an outfit of clothing or a small musical instrument such as a harmonica or recorder. A complete list of gift suggestions can be found at www.samaritans purse.org/operation-christmas-child/what-goes-in-my-shoeboxsuggestions. Samaritan’s Purse also offers an opportunity for people to donate a shoebox gift online. Details about that program are available at www.samaritans purse.org/operation-christmas-child/buildonline. Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America” because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. ONE LITTLE FLU SHOT CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

The Asa Packer Mansion stands today as it did when the last member of the Packer family lived there. Due to COVID-19, tours have been temporarily suspended until 2021.

Protect P Pr rot otect ec ct yourself your yo urse ur self lf and those around you. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.

throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion.

Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart) Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy an entirely different aspect of Jim Thorpe, no matter what the season. After all, the many railways and waterways of the area’s storied past make for excellent outdoor recreation today. Take a 9mile downhill bike trip on the Switchback Trail to the picturesque Broadway in downtown Jim Thorpe. Bike or hike through the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for some truly spectacular scenery, or visit any of the numerous local trailheads accessible from town. Take to the water for a challenging whitewater rafting ride or take a scenic kayak paddle through the gorge and surrounding waterways. Several outfitters are available to arrange tours to explore the region’s waters. Naturalists may want to spend a relaxing afternoon at the Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary. Romantic small-town charm, entrepreneurship, a legendary past and scenic vistas all make their home in the Pocono Mountains’ Jim Thorpe. Playhouse Slates Workshop

AFF Plans Peace Tree Project Thirty-three years ago, the Association of Faculty and Friends (AFF) of Penn State Health, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine began a project known as the Peace Tree, a tree that is decorated with white lights in memory of or in honor of loved ones or people who have made a difference in another’s life. The tree represents peace, hope, unity, joy and love. According to co-chairs Lisa Braccini-Barletta and Michelle Carraher, this year, the Peace Tree will have special meaning as it is on the front lawn of the newly expanded Children’s Hospital. For safety reasons, this year the tree will be lighted during a small, private ceremony during the week of Thanksgiving.

Sponsorships for the tree are being accepted. All donors will receive a printed copy of the program which will contain a list of the individuals who will be honored or remembered this year. Donations must be received by Thursday, Nov. 19, for a loved one’s name to be included in the booklet. Funds raised by the AFF support this tradition and the mission of AFF, which is to promote medical education, research, clinical care and scholarship and to serve the needs of the community. For more information or to remember or honor someone, readers may visit www.pennstatehersheyaff.org. A donation form including instructions for sending contributions by mail is also available at the aforementioned website.

Attention Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers! Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk?

Neighborhood

Chatter Tonya Bibb • 717-623-2767 tkcondran@gmail.com

Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Before coming to Madden, I was having pain in my hip and leg from Sciatica, which impacted my daily activities, such as sitting, standing and walking. I was not sleeping well, and could not get comfortable. Now my pain has decreased and I’m now able to move freely and confidently, and my pain level has dropped and I can now sleep well.” -Denise G. Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life… I’ve seen it many times. ✔ It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… ✔ It can take your focus away on enjoying your life… like spending time with your children or grandchildren… ✔ It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… ✔ It can ruin your travel plans… ✔ And it can take away your ability to live life… having to rely on others… or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting… not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems… and life problems. Here at Madden Physical Therapy the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 1000’s of people who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica… it’s our specialty.

So by request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Madden Physical Therapy in Lower Paxton on Wednesday, November 18th at 7:00 PM. If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: ✔ The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… ✔ The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… ✔ A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) ✔ How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… ✔ What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call to register at 717-210-9945. When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 15 seats available for the event… so if you would like to attend, be sure to register now… Call 717-210-9945. How Much Is It to Attend? The event is FREE. No cost to you… As a Special Bonus… the first 10 people to call and register for the event will receive a free copy of our book “Back to Normal: Natural Healing without Medications, Injections and Surgery”. Looking forward to seeing you there, Chad Madden, Physical Therapist Madden Physical Therapy – Paid Advertisement – R065054

half-day options are available within the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Currently, transportation is provided for one passenger at a time. The van is disinfected after each use, hand sanitizer is provided for riders, and face masks are required. The drivers socially distance themselves from the riders, who are in the backseat of the van. Drivers also take their temperature and that of the riders using the provided touchless infrared thermometer. Call 717-580-8332 for more information. Food Pantry Services The Middletown Interfaith Food Pantry is open Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is located at 201 Wyoming St. (the old Bob & Romaine’s grocery store) in Royalton. To be eligible for services, clients must live within the Middletown area and have a ZIP code of 17057. Not only does the food pantry provide food, but, with the help of the Hershey Medical Center outreach staff, it monitors high blood pressure, provides flu shots, and offers information on nutrition on a oneon-one basis. Located with the pantry is Tri-County Community Action with Erica Segarra as the self-sufficiency case manager. She works with clients one on one. In the near future, the site plans to offer income tax services. Those who need assistance may call 717-944-5668.

Free Turkey from pg 3 1 cup sugar 1 cup chopped pecans 3 large bananas, chopped 28 ounces fruit cocktail in light syrup, drained 1 pint whipping cream 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 6 tablespoons sugar Directions: 1. The day before serving, cook cranberries in water over low heat until soft. 2. Add sugar and mash. 3. Add chopped nuts. 4. Stir, cover, and refrigerate overnight. 5. About 4 hours before serving, add the fruit cocktail. 6. Just before serving, whip cream, add sugar and vanilla, and whip until soft peaks form. 7. Add bananas to fruit mixture. 8. Vista Autism Services Receives Award Vista Autism Services was named the 2020 Business Partner of the Year by Central Penn College at a virtual ceremony held on Sept. 2. The award recognizes a local company or organization for its commitment to partnering with the college and its Center for Career Services and Development. For the past three years, Central Penn has employed individuals with autism from The Vista School and The Vista Adult Services Employment program. The part-time employees assist with the company’s annual one-year and five-year graduate survey mailings. Vista Autism Services also has provided hands-on internship opportunities for many Central Penn students, particularly those from the Occupational Therapy Assistant program. At the online ceremony, the college bestowed the Intern of the Year awards to Jessica Patton, occupational therapy assistant, and Timothy Umstead, corporate communications. The event featured David J. De Notaris as keynote speaker. He serves as the chief inspiration officer at Sky’s the Limit Communications & Associates, which is headquartered in Hershey. He spoke about the power of resiliency in overcoming obstacles.

building. We estimate we will need about $50,000 for that.” Visitors to the craft show, which is marking its 30th year, can expect a wide variety of items, said Maryann Swartz, museum manager. “It’s a nice selection of unique, handmade items,” she shared, listing hand-forged iron pieces, scarves and hats made from handspun dog fur, home décor, jewelry, handsewn items, hand-turned wood and more. “We hope to have about 25 vendors, and we may have some outside in the backyard on Saturday, weather permitting,” Landis stated. To keep the event as safe as possible, masks will be required for both shoppers and vendors. “We are limiting the number of vendors per room and limiting the number of people allowed in at one time,” Landis said. “Our route through the show will be one way, but you can re-enter if you want to revisit a booth.” In a typical year, the Win-

Royer’s Flowers & Gifts is collecting holiday cards and coloring pages for service members and veterans throughout November in each of its stores. Royer’s will present the collected items to the American Red Cross’ Holidays for Heroes program. Cards and coloring pages may be dropped off at any Royer’s store during normal business hours. Face coverings are required. Free coloring pages can be downloaded at www.royers.com/heroes. The Red Cross offers sever-

al guidelines for preparing the cards. People should use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member” or “Dear Veteran.” When writing in the card, people should express reasons why they are thankful for the service members or veterans. Those who have a personal connection, such as a family member who served, should add that information to the card. The cards should not be overtly religious, but messages such as “Merry Christmas” or “God Bless You” are

acceptable. Inserts such as glitter, photos and business cards should not be included. Also, the cards should not include personal information such as telephone numbers or home or email addresses. However, the cards should be signed with the giver’s name. Family-owned Royer’s has 16 stores in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties, including one Stephenson’s Flowers & Gifts location in Harrisburg.
