Sticks & Biscuits allows PCIHC to reach and score goals
Inside the ice hockey arena, sticks and “biscuits” - or pucks - are crucial for staging the contest. On the Thanksgiving table, drumsticks (or simply sticks) and biscuits play different roles that are just as important.
Sticks and biscuits also have a lot of meaning to the Palmyra Cougars Ice Hockey Club (PCIHC). For it is from them that the club’s most important fundraising event, Sticks & Biscuits 5K, originates.

Tdap vaccines available at Giant and Martin’s pharmacies
Following a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is on the rise, the Giant Company announced that Tdap vaccines are now available in all Giant and Martin’s in-store pharmacies.
Whooping cough is a serious respiratory disease that can be life-threatening for infants. The CDC recommends Tdap vaccinations for everyone with booster doses every 10 years or sooner if the person is pregnant or injured. This vaccine is a combination of shots that protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough.
Giant and Martin’s pharmacies in Pennsylvania can vaccinate custom-
ers age 18 and up without a prescription
If customers are unsure if they are in need of a Tdap vaccine, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists can look at their medical history and determine eligibility. Walk-in vaccinations are available, but customers can save time by booking an appointment online at www.giantfoodstores .com/pages/tgc-vaccines or www.martinsfoods .com/pages/tgc-vaccines.
Customers must bring photo ID and a prescription insurance card. Parental consent is required, and a parent or guardian must be on-site.
In addition, customers can visit any in-store Giant or Martin’s pharmacy to receive their flu vaccination. Flu and pertussis vaccines can be given together.

“People in the hockey world get it,” said Ryan Patrick, PCIHC’s president. “There are costs to (playing ice hockey), but we’re trying to keep them down. Sticks & Biscuits is our way to do that. You get to come out and run and be active. We want to continue to grow the game in the area.”
PCIHC will present this year’s edition of the annual Sticks & Biscuits 5K run and fun run on Thursday, Nov. 28, Thanksgiving Day, beginning at 8 a.m. at In The Net Sports Complex, 798 Airport Road, Palmyra. Competitors and participants can preregister at https://palmyracougars icehockey.sportngin.com or in person beginning at 6:30 a.m. on the day of the event.
Runners will be sent out over the 3.1-mile Airport Road course in two waves, one at 8 a.m. and the other at 9 a.m., and prizes will be awarded for the top male and female 5K finishers in different age groups. Top finishers not present when the winners are announced will have their prizes sent to them.
The fun run, which is designed for kids age 12 and under and also requires a fee, will be conducted on one of In The Net’s artificial turf fields beginning at 8:15 a.m.
More than 1,200 runners are expected to participate. Members of PCIHC will be on hand to assist with the staging of the event.
All proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to offset expenses incurred by PCIHC. PCIHC will also be accepting separate donations for the Hershey Figure Skating Club’s Hershey Twizzles therapeutic program for children and

adults with physical and mental disabilities.
“It’s our primary fundraiser for the year,” said Patrick. “We are responsible to fund our program, and the burden on parents can be pretty high. The cost of ice time isn’t cheap.”
“Hockey is more of a lifestyle,” continued Patrick. “It’s a family pursuit. It’s open to everyone, but it takes a lot to get our athletes where they need to be. Hockey is not a game you just stop playing after high school.”
Unlike many scholastic athletic endeavors, ice hockey is not a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association-sanctioned sport. PCIHC is associated with the Palmyra Area School District (PASD), but not affiliated with it or funded by it.
PCIHC sponsors a high school varsity team made up of 24 PASD students in grades nine through 12 and a middle school team made up of 17 PASD students in grades five through eight. PCIHC’s high school varsity team is a member of the Central Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League and plays about 20 games each season.
PCIHC was founded in 1994, and the club established the Sticks & Biscuits 5K fundraiser in 2007. The club plays its home games at Klick Lewis Arena, which is located at In The Net. “A lot of these kids play travel hockey too,” said Patrick. “This is an opportunity to play for their school. Hockey has always been a big thing in Palmyra. When you have a crowd packed into an arena, it just takes games to a different level. It’s the school-pride piece that the kids play for.”

PennDOT posts contest for students
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites high school students from across the state to participate in the eighth annual PennDOT Innovations Challenge, which encourages students to use their problem-solving, creative and strategic thinking abilities to solve real-world transportation challenges in a competition among their peers. The Innovations Challenge is open to all students in grades nine through 12, regardless of their school’s learning model.
For this year’s challenge, students are asked to develop a cost-effective, innovative solution that may help PennDOT more effectively increase awareness of seat belt safety and change behavior to improve roadway safety. PennDOT is committed to continuously improving roadway safety, and the agency works to do so using a multifaceted strategy, which involves promoting behavioral programs and implementing infrastructure improvements.
Regional Innovations Challenge winners will be selected and invited to present their solutions to the PennDOT secretary and a panel of judges, which will determine the statewide winner. For this year’s challenge, four organizations are providing a combined total award of $6,000 to the statewide winning team. These organizations are the Transportation Policy and Education Foundation, an educational arm of the Associated Pennsylvania
Constructors (APC); the American Council of Engineering Companies of PA (ACEC/PA); the Mid-Atlantic Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (MASITE); and the Intelligent Transportation Society of Pennsylvania (ITSPA).

New program aims to improve work zone safety
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) have launched a new, statewide training program to improve new driver safety and roadway worker protection. The launch took place at Carlisle High School to highlight teen driver safety during National Teen Driver Safety Week.
Pennsylvania’s New Driver Work Zone Safety Program is a training project that uses videos, infographics, knowledge checks, and testimonials to teach new drivers work zone laws, signage, and key facts, in addition to offering real-life scenarios to enhance understanding. The new program launched during National Teen Driver Safety Week in October; this annual observance aims to provide education on safe driving to teens and all new drivers in the commonwealth.
The free, 35-minute virtual New Driver Work Zone Safety Program is currently available in English and Spanish. The transporta -
tion agencies will also collaborate on hands-on training opportunities to supplement the course.
Last October, Oklahoma became the first state in the nation to require new drivers to pass a work zone safety course to get their licenses. After hearing about Oklahoma’s program, the PA Turnpike developed a plan to introduce a similar initiative and has been working with PennDOT to make it a reality. The project was funded through $50,000 from the Federal Highway Administration’s State Transportation Innovation Council Incentive Program.
While the program is free and encouraged for all Pennsylvania residents, it is especially geared for new drivers.
Key factors in crashes involving teen drivers in Pennsylvania include driver inexperience, driver distractions, driving too fast for conditions, and improper or careless turning. The risk of a crash involving any of these factors can be reduced through practice, limiting the number of passengers riding with a teen driver, obeying all rules of the road, and using common sense.
The joint training project extends PennDOT and the PA Turnpike’s collaboration on increased work zone safety awareness. Both organizations host work zone-related educational events throughout the year. In March, PennDOT and the PA Turnpike, in partnership with the Pennsylvania State Police, started enforcement of the statewide Work Zone Speed Safety Camera program, which uses vehicle-mounted systems and electronic speed timing devices to detect and record motorists exceeding posted work zone speed limits by 11 miles per hour or more.

Safety tips for pet owners
Newly adopted pets waste little time becoming beloved members of a household. But much like young children, pets are a significant responsibility, and they rely on their human caretakers to ensure their safety. To help ensure a pet’s health and happiness, people may follow a few tips, courtesy of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Old Farm Veterinary Hospital, and Security.org.
Pet owners may consider installing an indoor and outdoor security camera system. Having eyes on pets while they are alone at home may enable a quick response should something happen.
Pet food should not be left outdoors overnight. Dog and cat foods can attract other animals, such as bears, raccoons, foxes, and opossums, depending on where a person lives. Wild animals grow accustomed to receiving easy meals, which could decrease their trepidation about being around a home or yard. Runins between pets and wild animals should be avoided.
People should not use a retractable leash. Walking a pet on a non-retractable leash allows better control of the animal in the event of an encounter with a person or another animal.
It is important to be cautious with chemicals. Pet owners should consider any chemicals they use in their yard, including pesticides
and weed killers, as well as cleaning products used indoors. Pets can ingest or inhale these products and get sick.
Potential choking hazards should be picked up from the floor so that pets will not swallow them. These items include string, small pieces of toys, and rawhide bone fragments.
Before starting a car when it is cold outside, families that allow their cats outdoor access should thump on the car hood. Cats sometimes take shelter near a warm engine block, and they can become injured if a person starts the car while they are under the hood.
Pets should be kept up to date on their vaccinations.
Whether pets never step outdoors or have free rein, people should vaccinate companion animals against common parasites and other pests.
Microchipping is also advisable. Microchips not only protect pets should they get lost, but they also can help track down animals that may have been stolen. People should keep the microchip data current to ensure a swift recovery.
Pet owners should keep foods and medicines out of reach. Pets can be curious, and many human foods can be toxic to them.
By taking these steps, people can help to safeguard their pets’ well-being.
Grants awarded to local businesses
A pair of recently awarded grants will support business expansion within the 106th District. The grants were Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grants of $500,000 for Hidden Still Spirits and $1.1 million for Mary’s Health & Fitness, both locally owned businesses.
Hidden Still Spirits founder David E. Stein and his business partners overhauled the former Hershey Company recycling facility, which was vacant and in disrepair for 25 years. The facility was then renovated to accommodate distilling, an eatery, and a tasting room.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the mission of Brittany’s Hope to aid orphaned and at-risk children. Brittany’s Hope provides adoption grants for families to adopt special needs children, and the organization also supports humanitarian efforts with its partner
children’s homes in Vietnam, Kenya and Ethiopia.
“One hundred percent of all proceeds are dedicated to the children we serve,” Myers shared. “Attending Christmas at the Star Barn is a gift to your family and a gift to orphaned and at-risk children. What better Christmas gift can you give?”
Tickets are required to attend Christmas at the Star Barn Village. For more information or to support Brittany’s Hope, visit www.brittanyshope .org. The organization will also participate in the ExtraGive on Friday, Nov. 22.
TREE SERVICE
started Mary’s Health & Fitness in 2014 by offering classes on a grass field in the Hershey area. Since then, she expanded into a studio and a training center, where youths and adults can get professional guidance on nutrition, sports psychology, and recovery. Driscoll said she intends to use the grant for building upgrades at the appointment-only training center on Bullfrog Valley Road in Hummelstown. RACP grants support the design, acquisition, and construction of regional, economic, cultural, civic, recreational, and historical improvement projects. They are administered by the Office of the Budget.

Before you sit down to eat turkey on Thanksgiving Day, hit the streets of Elizabethtown and chase some instead. The Great Turkey Chase will be held on Thursday, Nov. 28, at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church (EBIC), 996 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Day-of registration will start at 6:45 a.m. The 5K race will begin at 8:15 a.m., and kids’
runs will start at 9:15 a.m. Bib number pickup will be available for preregistered participants on Wednesday, Nov. 27, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the church.
“This is a 5K run/walk event,” said race director Grace Wells. “Our racecourse is a 5K course, starting at EBIC, circling around the town, returning back to EBIC for the finish. We have stuffed turkeys on the course and a frozen turkey at the
finish line for those who find one on the route.”
the largest number of registrants wins - and Great Turkey Chase Costume Contest for 5K participants (with) group and individual prizes to be awarded,” she shared. “Details of contests are located on the registration website.”
The event will also feature two free fun runs. “(We’ll have) one for the youngest participants who can’t run too far and then another for those who can run about a quarter mile loop. They can run up to four times for their mile,” Wells shared. “Our kids’ run is sponsored by The Tatted Toy Guys from Elizabethtown.”
Wells invites people to come out for the fun and enjoy the outdoor event before celebrating the holiday.
Prizes will be awarded for various age groups among 5K participants, including age 14 and under and ages 15 to 19, and then in 10-year groups up to age 80-plus. “I’m always inspired by our 80-plus participants,” Wells said.
Proceeds from the Great Turkey Chase will benefit Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS). The event is made possible through the support of a variety of sponsors, Wells said, including Brightspeed Internet, Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dustin Nagy Excavating and R&T Mechanical.
“People can expect a fun and energetic atmosphere supporting a great local organization,” she stated. “We have participants of all ages and encourage both walkers and runners to join us. It is a fun way to start your Thanksgiving Day, burn off some calories and support a great cause.”
This is the seventh year for the event, and Wells has added some fun twists. “We have two new contests this year: The Great Turkey Chase Family Gathering Contest - the family with
Strollers are allowed on the route, but participants with strollers should start toward the back of the race pack. For safety reasons, no dogs are allowed on the racecourse. Parking guidelines are available on the registration website. For more information and to register for the 5K for a fee, visit https:// runsignup.com/Race/PA /Elizabethtown/Great TurkeyChase. There is no charge to enter the kids’ run, but registration is requested at the same website.
Leach named Special Teams Player of the Week
and returned the punt for a 65-yard touchdown.
Tate Leach of the Bridgewater College (BC) football team has been named the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Special Teams Player of the Week after a pair of punt returns in a 63-7 win over Averett University on Oct. 12.
Leach returned the first punt of the game for 28 yards to set up the Eagles’ first scoring drive on the team’s opening series. The junior from Middletown followed that up in the fourth quarter as he fielded a 50-yard punt at the BC 35-yard line
This is Leach’s first Player of the Week selection and the Eagles’ fourth Special Teams Player of the Week honor of the season. The BC special teams unit ranks fourth nationally in kickoff returns and eighth nationally in punt returns. The score was the Eagles’ second special teams touchdown of the game as senior Cedric Drumgoole made an 88-yard house call on a return play in the first quarter.
