Emma Dickinson, Lower Dauphin High School junior, built a tiny house for where out-of-town patients can stay while receiving treatment for Lyme disease.
Lower Dauphin Student Builds Tiny House high school student was recently honored by Lower Dauphin Communities That Care and Hummelstown Police for doing the right thing. Emma Dickinson, a junior at Lower Dauphin High School, recognized that people come from across the country to seek treatment for Lyme disease with her doctor, Dr. Noonan. So she decided to build a tiny house, where patients can stay

while being treated. She started the project as a freshman in high school and made major progress on constructing the house during the COVID-19 school closure. For details about the project and photos of the tiny house, readers may visit www.sites.google .com/ldsdstudents.org/teenytiny ittybittyhouse/home. Nominated by her school counselor, Farren Schmidt, Emma was
recognized with a $25 gift card, a Do the Right Thing T-shirt and certificate and a Papa John’s pizza coupon. This month’s program sponsor was Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home. The Do the Right Thing program is modeled after a successful national program. Now in its 14th year, the program recognizes students in the Lower Dauphin community who have distinguished
themselves through their accomplishments, attitude or outstanding efforts. The program provides a way to recognize good deeds and reinforce exemplary behavior. The residents of the Lower Dauphin School District can see the many good things the young people of their community are doing. This program allows the community to thank its children for doing the right thing.

Star Barn from pg 1 timed tickets between 7:15 and 10:15 a.m. Additional time slots may be added closer to the event, and readers may get the most updated information at www.brittanyshope.org. Although this event has been held for the last several years, this year will look a little different, said Mai-Lynn Abel Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope. “In the past we did a wonderful VIP breakfast session with Santa, but due to COVID, we are unable to hold it this year,” she explained. “In lieu, we are so excited to introduce a new activity.” This year, attendees will board the Santa Express, an 1860s steam engine train, for a ride to Santa’s workshop. “The train will pull into Santa’s workshop and he’ll board with Mrs. Claus to visit and present each boy and girl with a special gift,” Sahd said. In addition to the train ride, the event will include an opportunity to meet characters from the Enchanted Teapot, a local entertainment company; a brown bag treat with hot chocolate provided by Food for Thought Catering; and family
portraits by Melissa McClain Photography and Nathan Desch Photography. Visitors to Christmas at The Star Barn Village will also have the opportunity to take a self-guided tour of the property and the buildings on-site, Sahd noted, adding, “Everything will be beautifully decorated for the holidays.” Sahd emphasized that the organizers put a lot of thought into how to put on a physical event and still make the health and safety of guests a priority. “We’ll be limiting crowds and controlling how many people can be in one place at a time,” she explained. “We want to make sure everyone has a safe and magical time.” All events will be held outside, Sahd noted. “We want to make sure people come dressed for the weather and wear good walking shoes,” she recommended. All of the proceeds from Christmas at The Star Barn Village benefit Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtownbased organization that focuses on providing aid to abandoned children, including adoption grants for

We serve the most vulnerable people.” Although changes had to be made to this year’s event, the spirit
of the day remains the same, Sahd noted. “We are excited that we are able to put on a safe physical event this year for our community, because I know many are aching for opportunities just to get out,” she remarked. Playhouse Plans Winter Session Hershey Area Playhouse will offer its winter session for students in grades one to 12. The program will run from Saturday, Jan. 9, to Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021, with most of the classes taking place virtually. Depending on COVID-19 health restrictions, the final two classes may be held in person, adhering to social distance guidelines and other CDC-recommended safety protocols. The classes include Creative Kids Sounds and Words for children in grades one to three from 9 to 10 a.m.; Acting It Up - Voices and Imaginations for students in grades four to six from 10:15 to 11:45 a.m.; and Theatre Arts Studio - Performing With Voices for students in grades seven through 12 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Creative Kids will explore the actor’s tools of body, mind, and voice through creative dramatics, theater games and storytelling. Children will act out scripts in the fashion of a radio drama which will help
them explore sounds and words and how they work together to create interesting characters and their stories. Acting it Up will build on the actor’s tools of voice, body, and imagination. Radio dramas, both classic and modern, will be introduced to the students. They will experiment by creating characters using only voices and sound effects to perform a radio script. In the Theatre Arts Studio class, participants will collaborate with a team to dissect a script, understand the story, and create the characters. Radio, the precursor of podcasts, will be introduced as a medium to display the actor’s tools in dramatic and comedic productions. There is a cost per program. Registration information can be found at www.hersheyareaplayhouse.com in the Theatre Academy section. For other questions, readers may contact Jill Panyard at jillpanyard@gmail.com.

Spreading Christmas Joy, One Light At A Time Area “Pesticide Update” Planned modest display has BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Don Krasley loves Christmas, and it shows. For the past 14 years, he has set up a Christmas display in his yard at 525 Woodland Drive, Manheim, and has invited the public to stop by and watch a light show set to music. His display will run every night from Thursday, Nov. 26, through Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021. The hours are 5:30 to 10 p.m. on Sundays through Thursdays, and from 5:30 to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Krasley Christmas, which is what he calls his display, started as a joke between Krasley and his brother, who sent him a video of a commercial showing an elaborate display. “He was like, ‘Is this your house?’ as a joke, but it lit a fire in me,” Krasley recalled. “I said, ‘I can do that.’ And I did.” He was influenced by his grandfather, who had a display in his yard in Manheim and who passed on his love of Christmas. What started as a relatively
grown to include more than 80,000 lights and a lengthy show choreographed to music that Krasley chooses and programs. It takes Krasley about three weeks to set up the display, but he spends time all year working on it, whether he’s adding new songs or picking up new items for his yard. A few years ago, he switched to all LED lights, which has significantly cut down on his electric bill, he said, noting that he spends about $50 a month to operate the display. Additionally, Krasley is an electrician by trade, so he keeps costs down by doing almost all of the wiring and other electrical work himself. Over the years, Krasley has worked on his yard to make room for the ever-growing display. “When I first started this, I didn’t have a wide-open property for it, so I took out a lot of old trees,” he

explained. His home is located on a cul-de-sac, which makes the perfect spot for visitors to view the display from their cars, and his property is a bit isolated, so the light show doesn’t bother neighbors. For the past 10 years, Krasley has been collecting donations for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central PA in Hershey as part of his display, although donations are optional. “I like what the Ronald McDonald House does for families. They are a great organization,” he stated, adding that he and some friends set up the lights outside the house in Hershey every year as well.
Over the past decade, he has donated more than $29,000 to the organization. This year, Krasley’s display will include several pink elements to raise awareness for breast cancer research in honor of his wife, Tammy, a breast cancer survivor. Additionally, he will hold “pink outs” to benefit Makenna Linder, a Manheim 6-year-old who has undergone treatment for cancer. Krasley encourages everyone to check out his display, whether they are return guests or new visitors. “People are looking for fun things to do that don’t cost a fortune,” he said. “This is something fun for everyone.”
