After
an absence of several years because of the pandemic, Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary School (SSBVM) welcomed local veterans to enjoy breakfast as part of the celebration of Veterans Day on Nov. 11.
All local veterans were invited to attend the morning activity. To reach as many participants as possible, announcements about the event were made at the school and in the church bulletin at SSBVM Catholic Church.
“Any student that had a visiting veteran was able to join them for breakfast,” said SSBVM music teacher and Student Council adviser Josh Koch, who organized the event. “The breakfast was simple: pancakes, sausage, coffee and orange juice.”
Tree-Lighting Event
Hershey, the annual tree-lighting event, is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 3, from 2 to 6 p.m. in ChocolateTown Square, at the corner of Chocolate and Cocoa avenues.
The tradition of lighting a Christmas tree in Hershey dates to 1914, when a tree was decorated and placed in the center of town. Milton S. Hershey was asked to share a Christmas message that year, and he commented on the spirit of cooperation present in the town. In keeping with his message, this year, Downtown Hershey Association, Milton Hershey School, Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company, The Hershey Trust, William S. Bowman Trust, and The Hershey Company have cooperatively
worked together to bring the magic of the holidays back to downtown Hershey.
During Light Up Downtown Hershey, Santa will arrive at 2:30 p.m., and children may visit with him until 5:30 p.m. There will be entertainment throughout the event and free cookies and hot chocolate starting at 3 p.m. Additional snack items will be available for purchase, and holiday vendors will line the park. The event will culminate with the lighting of the holiday tree and the singing of “O Christmas Tree” to mark the start of the 2022 holiday season.
The event is free of charge. Volunteers are sought to help with the event. For more information, visit www.downtownhershey.com.
Members of the Knights of Columbus Council 3501 provided kitchen help, preparing and serving the pancakes and sausage. Some food was donated, and some was purchased.
Students also participated; members of the eighth-grade class served coffee and orange juice to the veterans. “They went around to refill beverages and ask if anyone wanted seconds, (and) they cleaned up after the event and enjoyed leftovers,” said Koch.
The school’s stairwell and cafeteria were decorated for the occasion in red, white and blue with thank you posters, “Welcome, Veterans” signs and patriotic coloring pages, which were colored by the younger students. “Pictures of family members who served and who are currently serving were also displayed in the hallway (leading) toward the
cafeteria,” Koch noted.
An “America’s White Table” was also on display at the event. “Our librarian, Mrs. (Kathy) Campbell, found out about ‘America’s White Table.’
She read the story to her classes,” said Koch, noting that the book was written by Margot Theis Raven.
According to the book, ever
since the Vietnam War, a table with a white table cloth has been set across America in mess halls and at military events to honor America’s Armed Forces, especially those members missing in action and held as prisoners of war. Each item on the table has a special meaning. For example, a lemon slice and grains of salt are placed on a
plate to show a captive soldier’s bitter fate and the tears of families waiting for loved ones to return. An empty chair is placed at the table to symbolize missing military personnel.
Koch said that the Veterans Day breakfast was wellattended, noting that there were 50 guests, 30 of whom were veterans. “We needed more tables than we expected, which was awesome to see,” he said.

Nanny’s Nighties Wraps Women In Love
BY CATHY MOLITORISAngie Kreider took a personal loss and turned it into a way to help others. When Angie’s mother, Sharon Atkins, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at 59, Sharon had one request: She wanted to remain at home and be cared for by her family. Angie and her father, Bob Atkins, were able to accommodate that request, caring for Sharon in their Columbia home until she passed away in October of 2021. The family relied on additional care from Compassus Hospice, which sparked an idea for Angie.
“I learned about people in government-funded or Medicaid-funded facilities who don’t have the money for nightgowns, or they don’t have friends or relatives to give them to them,” Angie recalled. “My mom was a fashion diva. She really wanted to look nice. A nightgown is a way someone can feel special and feel beautiful. I started thinking, ‘Maybe we could help people out.’”
In June of 2021, before Sharon passed away, Angie and Bob created Nanny’s Nighties, using the nickname Sharon’s grandchildren gave her. Gathering financial donations from friends and family, Angie and Bob shopped for high-quality nightgowns and delivered 80 in December of 2021. The gifts were so wellreceived, the pair decided to repeat the distribution to more women this past spring, to mark Sharon’s birthday in April. So far, they have distributed more than 300 nightgowns to women in long-term care facilities in Lancaster and York counties. Each woman also receives socks and personal care items, along with a card about the project that
explains that the gift is in memory of Sharon.
Angie contacts the facilities and gets a list of each woman’s first name, nightgown size and favorite color. “We custom shop for every person,” Angie said. “We ask things like if they want short sleeves or long sleeves, a nightgown or a twopiece set.” Angie also labels each nightgown with the woman’s name so it’s easy to keep track of in the facilities.
Nanny’s Nightgowns is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and Bob noted that the operation is a simple one. “We have no overhead,” he said. “Everything that is donated to us goes to the cause. We have no inventory. We buy the items specifically for the people who will be getting them.”
The organization relies on donations to provide the gifts, and Bob noted that anyone who gives $100 or more is invited to accompany the pair when they distribute the gift bags. “I think the visits are really eye opening for a lot of people,” he said.
Bob and Sharon were married for 53 years, and Bob remembers his wife as someone who loved the beach and enjoyed traveling, shopping, sewing and cooking. When Angie approached him about starting Nanny’s Nighties, he was all in. “It brings me such joy that we can do this,” he said.
For Angie, the project is about more than just helping others. “I started this nonprofit sort of for selfish reasons,” she stated. “I didn’t want a day to go by that I didn’t think of my mom. I always want to have some reason to say my mom’s name.”
For more information on Nanny’s Nighties or to make a donation, email angela kreider@aol.com.

Stuart Landon and Rachel Landon’s stage adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” brings to life Charles Dickens’ classic novel of redemption and holiday magic. The show tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and his journey with three ghostly spirits that visit him on Christmas Eve. The production stars Nicholas Hughes, who has
played Ebenezer Scrooge for all 23 years. It features David Richwine as the clerk Bob Cratchit, and the role of Cratchit’s son Tiny Tim will be shared by Bryce Carter and Ian Dandrea. The show also highlights Jules Schrader as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Karen Ruch as the Ghost of Christmas Present and Brennen Dickerson as the Ghost of Christmas Future.
Additionally, the cast includes Patty Cole, Patrick Hughes, Jeff Wasileski, Jasmine Graham, Andrew Dixon, Joellen Terranova, Chris Krahulec, Gabriella DeCarli, Tyler Shadle, Kevin Cole, Jack Hoover, Ollie Nicotera, Scarlett Mink-Border, Natalie Weidler, Shenoa Alcantara, Sidney Dame, Emilee Eaton, Sam Pfeifer-Winborn, Jake Brehm, Havah Reinford, Annabelle Burzynski, Rosie Campbell, Anna Lavelle, Sawyer Bowie and Thomas Raymond.
The choreography is by Lexi Fazzolari, costume design is by Rachel Landon and Jack Weitzel and lighting design is by Tristan Stasiulis. Property design is by Becky Arney, wigs are by Diane Rothrock and Jess Ross is stage manager.
