Library Adds Book Lockers

The Hershey Public Library has purchased book lockers through a grant award of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services in addition to support from the Friends of the Hershey Public Library. The book lockers will allow library users to pick up physical materials 24/7.

To access the lockers, library users will log into their online account and place a hold on items. After users receive a text or email

with a five-digit passcode, they will visit the lockers and type the passcode or scan a QR code to retrieve their materials. They may also call the library during operating hours to request that items be placed into the lockers, and patrons will be given a code at the time of their call.

This project is made possible in part by ARPA funds from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services as administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Office of Commonwealth Libraries.

Chorale Slates Christmas Concerts

The Susquehanna Chorale, an adult chamber ensemble of 40 auditioned singers, will present its traditional Candlelight Christmas concert series.

The chorale will perform on Friday, Dec. 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts, Messiah University, 1 University Ave., Mechanicsburg; on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 7:30 p.m. at Leffler Chapel and Performance Center, Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown; and Sunday, Dec. 18, at 4 p.m. at Market Square Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Second St., Harrisburg. The programs will be conducted by founder and artistic director Linda L. Tedford.

A pre-concert instrumental recital will be presented by the Messiah University Brass 15 minutes prior to each performance. A reception for the audience and singers is planned following each program.

This year, the chorale’s program will be enhanced with musical accompaniment by

brass, organ, piano, violin, and percussion. Members of the Messiah University Brass will be featured in several selections, including a performance of John Rutter’s threemovement “Gloria.”

The chorale’s opening processional, “Personent Hodie,” will set the stage for an array of music, such as Jim Clements’ “Gabriel’s Message,” Eric Whitacre’s “Lux Aurumque,” Jerry Rubino’s setting of “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” and “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.” Traditional songs and carols will follow, including an audience sing-along of Mack Wilberg’s “Joy to the World.”

As the lights are dimmed and candles glow, the chorale will surround the audience for the traditional finale, “Silent Night.”

To purchase tickets, visit https://susquehannachorale .org/performances or call the Messiah University box office at 717-691-6036 and select option 1. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more people.

Community Singers Plan Christmas Concert

The Hummelstown Community Singers ensemble will present its annual Christmas concert, “Swinging Into Christmas,” on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Hummelstown United Church of Christ, 104 E. Main St., Hummelstown. The Hummelstown Community Singers, under the direction of Kate Bright, will perform a

selection of holiday favorites. Admission is free, and tickets are not required.

The group also performs at local nursing homes and various community events throughout the area.

Children Invited To Theater Production

Popcorn Hat Players will present “The Elves and the Shoemaker” at 1 p.m. on Saturdays from Dec. 3 to 17 at Gamut Theatre, 15 N. Fourth St., Harrisburg.

Willie is a good-hearted shoemaker who’s on the brink of losing her business when she gets the order of a lifetime: 50 pairs of shoes. However, she has to get them all made by

morning. A trio of mischievous elves arrives in the night to help her out. Written and directed by Clark Nicholson, artistic director of Gamut Theatre, this show is appropriate for children of all ages.

To purchase tickets and for more information, visit www.gamuttheatre.org/php or call the box office at 717238-4111.

Tips For Holiday Cookie Cutting

Baking is a tradition in many households, and goodies include cakes, pies, and cookies. Cookies are a tradition passed down through the ages. In medieval Europe, small spiced cookies were exchanged as treats, and people still bake and share gingerbread cookies today.

Cut cookies are especially prominent during the holiday season, with some families having favorite cookie cutter shapes and dough recipes. Certain techniques can make baking sessions easier and

help to ensure consistent results any time of year.

Working on a lightly floured, cool surface, such as a cutting board or stone counter top, is recommended. Bakers should never work on a warm surface, which can cause dough to spread and stick.

The dough can be rolled out between two sheets of baking or parchment paper to prevent it from sticking. Betty Crocker recommends a thickness of about 1/8 inch, unless noted in the recipe. The parchment paper also enables

rolled-out dough to be easily transferred to a refrigerator or elsewhere.

When rolling out dough, portioning the dough into a few smaller amounts allows it to roll out more easily. This will also help it to chill more readily.

Cookies cut most easily when the dough is chilled. The dough should be refrigerated for as long as possible, ideally an hour or moreeven overnight. The more chilled, the firmer the dough will be.

Frisby Participates In Parade

Middletown resident Maria Frisby took part in her alma mater Penn State’s homecoming parade in State College on Oct. 21. Her parade escort was Billy Darnell Nolen of Middletown. She also met Centre County Commissioner Steven G. Dershem. Other pageant queens or former queens in the parade included Miss Pennsylvania 2022 Alysa Bainbridge and Miss Pennsylvania Volunteer 2023 Abby Traxler.

Maria graduated from Middletown Area High School; HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College; and Penn State University. She was also scheduled to be in the 2022 Cargill Holiday Parade in downtown Harrisburg on Nov. 19. She was recently interviewed for an upcoming edition of the magazine 50 Plus Life.

Rubber rolling pin rings that slip onto each side of the rolling pin can help ensure that the dough is being rolled out to a uniform thickness.

Cookie cutters should be dipped in flour with each cut. It is a good idea to work from the center and move out to the edges when cutting out designs. When cutting, it is a good idea to maximize space and avoid scraps and rerolling.

Some expert bakers say that metal cookie cutters cut cleaner than plastic ones. Whichever cutter is used, the cookie should be cut by pressing straight down. The cookie cutter should not be twisted or jiggled when being used. Doughs with a high butter content can help, as the extra grease helps separate the dough from the cutters.

If cut cookies have gotten warmer, placing them in the freezer for a few minutes will help them firm up again before baking. This will help to ensure the cookies will not spread or become misshapen while baking.

Extra steps may seem like they will take a lot of time. However, the extra effort and attention to detail may help produce better results.

School Bus Stop Safety Tips Posted

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (Penn DOT) recently reinforced the importance of school transportation safety and highlighted the potential school transportation challenges posed by changing daylight conditions. The results of Operation Safe Stop, an annual school bus enforcement and education initiative that was held on Oct. 19, were also announced.

Operation Safe Stop data revealed that participating school districts and law enforcement agencies reported witnessing 155 violations of the law, down from the 252 reported last year. The initiative is held in conjunction with local and state police departments, school districts, and pupil transportation providers to conduct enforcement, raise public awareness about the consequences of improper passing of school buses, and reduce occurrences.

The School Bus Stopping Law requires motorists to stop at least 10 feet from the bus when approaching a school bus with its red lights

flashing and stop arm extended. Motorists approaching from all directions are required to stop. The only exception to this law is when motorists encounter a school bus stopping on the opposite side of a divided highway when lanes of the highway are clearly separated by a divider, such as a concrete barrier or grassy median.

Some safety tips for students to remember while waiting for or loading and unloading the bus include getting to the school bus stop five minutes early, so they will not have to run across the road to catch the bus. When waiting for the bus, students should stay away from traffic.

Students should line up at least five giant steps away from the curb or the roadway to wait for the bus. Children should never run after the school bus if it has already left the bus stop. Children should never push when getting on or off the school bus.

For more information about school bus safety, visit www.dmv.pa.gov and search for “School Bus Safety Tips.”

Singers Post Event Schedule

The Cumberland Singers, an all-women community chorus based in Mechanicsburg, will perform several concerts in December. All concerts are free and open to the public.

The concert program theme, “Light Is Returning,” celebrates the gifts of the season, including family, love, laughter, and the return to enjoying live music. The concerts will take place on Friday, Dec. 9, at 8 p.m. at Community United Methodist Church (UMC), 1601 Bridge St., New Cumberland; on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. at Enola

Emmanuel UMC, 22 Salt Road, Enola; and on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 3 p.m. at Shepherdstown UMC, 1934 S. York St., Mechanicsburg. Freewill donations will be accepted. For more details, visit www.cumberlandsingers.org.

The Cumberland Singers is looking for new singers for the spring season beginning in January. Practices are held on Tuesday evenings at Mechanicsburg Middle School, 1750 S. Market St., Mechanicsburg. Contact Alissa Plant at imamezzo@aol.com to schedule an audition.

Christmas Concert Planned

Selections from “Midwinter’s Gift,” the recent album of instrumental Christmas music by Frances Drost and Kirstin Myers, will feature prominently in the ninth annual “Portraits of White” concert on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 3 p.m. The concert will take place in Parmer Hall on the campus of Messiah University, 1 College Ave., Grantham.

The album, consisting of piano, oboe, and English horn arrangements of classic

Christmas songs, was released in November, placing No. 13 on the Billboard charts in the Classical Crossover category. In addition to songs from “Midwinter’s Gift,” Drost and other guest musicians will present a variety of winterand holiday-themed selections. Guest performances will include visual pieces by Timothy Storey.

Tickets are available by calling 717-691-6036 or visiting www.portraitsofwhite.com.
