New Year’s Eve Celebration Book Drive Held Adds Fireworks commemorative “Welcome 2019” label. According to Clark, Christ Lutheran members have sold root beer floats at a stand at the Elizabethtown Fair as a fundraiser for more than a dozen years, and in recent years proceeds from that effort have helped to fund the New Year’s Eve event. Proceeds from the bottled root beer sales will help to keep future celebrations free for attendees. Clark also hopes to have additional commemorative bottles made to sell at the next Elizabethtown Fair. With four years of successful events in the books and details all lined up for this year, now organizers are simply hoping and praying for good weather. “It was bitter cold last year, but we didn’t cancel,” recalled Clark, estimating that approximately 300 people showed up. “It was surprisingly well-attended for how cold it was.” For more information, readers may call 717-367-2786 or visit www.christlutheran-etown.com.
For the fifth consecutive year, volunteers from Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Winters Heritage House Museum have put together a fun-filled, family-oriented New Year’s Eve celebration for the community. The event, Welcome 2019, is set to take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31. Several new elements have been added for this year’s celebration, but the one that organizers are perhaps the most thrilled about is a professional fireworks display. The fireworks will begin immediately after the raising of a lighted star at 7 p.m. outside of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 E. High St., Elizabethtown. By raising the star at 7 p.m., the church is continuing a tradition that Elizabethtown Borough held for many years in conjunction with its sister town of Letterkenny, Ireland. Organizer Phil Clark explained that at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time in Elizabethtown, the clock strikes midnight for residents welcoming the new year in Letterkenny. Plus, hosting a celebration well before midnight gives local families and anyone who would rather not stay up late an alternative option for ringing in the new year. From 3 to 6 p.m., chicken barbecue dinners will be available to purchase at the church. Meals will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, fruit, and a bottle of water. Advance tickets for the chicken dinners may be purchased at the church or by calling 717-367-2786. Homemade soup will also be for sale at the church that evening. Aside from the chicken barbecue and soup, the entire event is free. Children’s activities will be offered at the Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Museum director Nancy Landis said that hearth cooking Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Winters Heritage demonstrations and samples of House Museum in Elizabethtown will host Welcome 2019, a free roast beef, chicken, gingerbread, community New Year’s Eve event, from 3 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 31.

Students Present Research Students from Lebanon Valley College, Annville, presented research in the areas of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology at the 20th Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences at UMBC in October. Caitlin Ritchey’s poster “Consequences of Early Iron Deficiency and Lead Co-exposure on Dopamine Signaling” received a first-place award. Local students include Katelyn Gingrich of Palmyra, a graduate of Palmyra Area High School, who received a Bachelor of Science in biology; Jordan Baum of Dover, a graduate of Dover Area High School,
who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in biology; Caitlin Ritchey of Landisville, a graduate of Hempfield High School, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in biology; Stephen Slimak of Elizabethtown, a graduate of Lower Dauphin High School, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in ACS chemistry and mathematics; Noah Kauffman of Lititz, a graduate of Warwick High School, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and molecular biology; Julia Weber of Palmyra, a graduate of the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and
molecular biology; and Anna Weaver of Lititz, a graduate of Warwick High School, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in ACS chemistry. The symposium seeks to display the diverse array of student-committed endeavors and foster the communication of their relevant novel results and concepts. The event exclusively features undergraduate research in all areas of chemistry, biology, and biochemistry with the understanding that progress at the chemical and biological interface requires cross-fertilization from the broadest possible spectrum of these disciplines.

and whipped cream will be part of the fun, along with hand-spinning demonstrations and a variety of children’s crafts. Free activities at the church will include bingo, balloon twisting, face painting, music provided by a disc jockey, and games led by a local Scout troop. Bingo prizes have been donated by parishioners and local businesses. Free hot dogs, popcorn, and hot cocoa will be available. Emergency vehicles including a fire truck, a police car, and an ambulance will also be onsite for folks to tour. Organizer Vicki Yaider noted that the youth group made luminarias that will be lined up outside to provide extra lighting and ambiance. Weather permitting, a fire pit will be blazing and supplies for s’mores will be on hand. Also new for this year will be commemorative bottles of root beer available for purchase. The 22-ounce bottles will be brewed and bottled by an Elizabethtownbased brewery and will feature a
