Healthy Kids Running Series Returns To Lancaster BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Every Sunday from April 11 to May 9, children from prekindergarten to eighth grade can participate in the Healthy Kids Running Series at Daniel’s Den Playground at Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster. Dana Atticks, community coordinator, has been running the Lancaster series for five seasons. “I fell in love with running in 2015; it really changed my life,” said Atticks. “I feel like I’ve been given

an opportunity to use my passion to help and support others.” Atticks became coordinator after she assisted a friend with organizing the series in the spring of 2017. When her friend asked if Atticks would like to take over as coordinator in the fall, Atticks felt as if it was something she was supposed to do. “I have four children, and my three girls have been a tremendous help ever since I took over the series,” noted Atticks. “They do the warm-ups, the timing … it’s been a family affair.” See Running Series pg 10

Tuning In With A Chorus Director BY COURTNEY MENGEL

or her entire life, Vocal Harmonix director Lori Jo Whitehaus has been living her dream through music. At a young age, Whitehaus received formal piano and clarinet lessons; she even taught herself how to play the guitar and ukulele. “Music has always been important to my family,” said Whitehaus. “My great-grandmother taught piano lessons on our farm in Montgomery County and we were all expected to read music.” Whitehaus discovered Lancaster County while attending Millersville University, where she majored in elementary education and double minored in music and urban studies. After graduating from the university, Whitehaus moved to the Harrisburg area to teach. Almost immediately, she looked for a musical outlet in the community. During her search, she discovered Sweet Adelines International, where her low range allowed her to join the group as a bass in 1978. “Sweet Adelines is a nonprofit educational organization, and I took advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow as a musician,” noted Whitehaus.

“Music has always been important to my family. My great-grandmother taught piano lessons on our farm in Montgomery County and we were all expected to read music.” Over the course of her vocal career, Whitehaus has been on the international stage five times. As a singer, she served as a bass in six registered quartets and competed with a quartet 10 times. Whitehaus was honored as a Master Director in 2016 and was awarded the Norma Moore Award of Distinction (Hall of Fame for Region 19). “I can also proudly say that I’ve sung in a last-place quartet and, although it was a long time ago, directed a last-place chorus,” said Whitehaus. “These memories keep

me humble and help me understand the challenges that all of our choruses and quartets face as performers.” Twenty-four years after Whitehaus became director of the Red Rose City Chorus, the group rebranded as the Vocal Harmonix. “We rebranded in order to distinguish ourselves from the existing Red Rose Chorus and to appeal to a wider audience beyond Lancaster County,” explained Whitehaus. Vocal Harmonix currently has members from Lancaster, York, Cumberland, Dauphin, Berks, and Chester counties. It also has one member who resides in Maryland. This year is the 60th anniversary of the group’s charter, and it will celebrate throughout the year. Vocal Harmonix will host an alumni night via Zoom on Monday, May 3. Prior to the March 2020 shutdown, the group rehearsed at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster. Since then, rehearsals have been held via Zoom. For more information about Sweet Adelines, readers may visit www.sweetadelines.com or follow @sweetadelinesintl on Facebook and Instagram. In February, when parts of Texas were hit by a fluke snowstorm, Aaron Fisher and David Lapp, CEOs of Blessings of Hope (BOH), a wholesale food bank located on Becker Road in Leola, decided to send Fisher to the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area with a tractor-trailer load of food and water through their Hands of Hope program. Although Fisher thought he would only be gone a few days, over the next two weeks, 12 tractor-trailer loads of food boxes containing fruit, vegetables, milk, yogurt, and other food items, along with skids of water, traveled from

Leola to Texas. Fisher remained in the Lone Star State to oversee distribution. “Food and water was what they needed,” recalled Fisher, who added that trailers went to Houston and Austin as well. “They had no electric or water, so water was in high demand.” Outreaches like shipping 294,600 pounds of food to Texas are made possible by fundraisers like the iCare event BOH has planned for Friday, May 28, and Saturday, May 29, at 1850 Diamond Station Road, Ephrata. The outdoor event will begin at 5:30 p.m. on May 28 and at 6:30 a.m. on May 29. The May 28 fundraiser,

In the evening, a bydonation concert will be held. Blessings of Hope was started in 2006, when Lapp and Fisher began using a garage in Farmersville to store and redistribute food that was being wasted and that they knew could be used to feed people in

Lancaster County and beyond. Eventually, the ministry developed relationships with more than 80 food producers and began acting as a bank to collect and redistribute food to pantries, outreaches, halfway houses, and ministries, along with Hands of Hope food box distributions.

I was also in New Hampshire at a camp for seven years, and then I came here.” BRR now offers a gap year program called “South Bound” for recent high school graduates to spread the Gospel to children in South America. Students accepted into the program will train for four months at BRR and then serve in southern Chile for two months. In addition to this experience, students will receive hands-on learning and

certifications, such as high ropes training, first aid/CPR, and others. “We’re trying to design it where it is very affordable for students,” explained Fiorello. “It’s a really great opportunity.” In addition to summer camp, BRR will host its fourth Run the Rock Trail Run on Saturday, May 15. Registration for the event will close Friday, April 16. BRR will also host its first Run Walk Ride and auction on Saturday, June 12, with registration closing on Friday, May 21. “We have a lot here at Black Rock,” said Fiorello. “We’re blessed with great facilities, amazing food, and awesome staff.” For more information about BRR, visit www.brr.org or call 717-964-4088.

The Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA) needs you. The organization is holding its membership drive to grow its base and raise funds for its projects. “If you’re enthusiastic for clean, cold-water fishing, and you want to have access to it, we’d love to have you,” said Brandon Crouser, DFCA secretary. “If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, you should consider joining us.” In a typical year, DFCA would hold two major fundraising events - its outdoor show and kids’ fishing derby. With COVID restrictions, the group could not hold either event this past

year. Instead, the organization had to think up new ways to raise funds. “We set up a new website, www.donegalcreek.org, for people to make a minimum donation of $10,” Crouser noted. “Upon receiving their donation, we send out a membership pin and card as well as add them to the email list for future events like work parties, meetings and trout stocking the Donegal and Little Chiques creeks.” DFCA meetings are held the third Monday of every month, either at Amato’s Woodfire Pizza and Italian Restaurant in Mount Joy or, in warmer weather, at the East Donegal Township Chickies Creek Day Use Area.

Race Your Way For The YWCA A Kids Fun Run is also part of the event this year, and children age 12 and under are encouraged to participate in a 100-yard dash virtually. “This year we have a special gift for youth participants,” Blake said. “Zetta Elliott, an awardwinning author recently published a children’s book set in Lancaster, ‘Roots Run Deep.’ It is illustrated by a Lancaster artist, Gracie Berry.” Every child who signs up will receive the book, which tells the story of the resilience and determination of Africans as they resist enslavement and fight for their rightful place as citizens of the United States. Blake encourages anyone to sign up for the race, adding, “In addition to supporting our work, by participating in

YWCA Lancaster will host its annual Race Against Racism with an interactive/educational twist, as this year’s event will offer a history lesson along with the race. The Race Your Way Race Against Racism will run from Saturday, April 24, through Saturday, May 22. “This is an opportunity to use our 5K course through Lancaster with an opportunity to learn about various historic sites or make your own race in your neighborhood, on your treadmill or any other way that works for you,” explained Stacie Blake, CEO of YWCA Lancaster. This is the 23rd consecutive year for the race, making it the longest-running Race Against Racism in the country, she noted. As always, the race is a fundraiser for the YWCA’s programs. This year’s race supports the new Center for Racial and Gender Equity. “This is a division of YWCA that focuses on education, advocacy and community engagement in our quest to create an equitable community for all residents,” Blake stated.

One option for this year’s race will be to utilize a self-guided course through Lancaster city with a curated Race Against Racism playlist featuring music and spoken word about historic stops along the route. “This year we wanted to make a stronger connection with our important mission of eliminating racism and empowering women,” Blake said. “Our first step was to work with the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania to identify six key sites of historical significance to African Americans in Lancaster. Our professional race coordinator used these points to map and measure a new 5K course.” Information will be recorded about the sites and will be interspersed with music to create a Spotify playlist. “The playlist was culled from suggestions of our Social Justice Training Team, and you will find some moving, motivating and inspiring music on this mix,” she remarked. “We are excited about the new course, which still starts and ends at Musser Park, just around the corner from YWCA Lancaster.”

Dutch Apple To Stage “On Your Feet”

Running Series from pg 1 Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the series was postponed in 2020. This year, however, families are able to come back and participate. “I’ve been trying to build up the series for families in Lancaster County because I feel as though we’ve been so disconnected during the pandemic,” said Atticks. “I really just want people to come out, meet their neighbors, and encourage their kids.” Throughout the series, runners earn points and those with the most points earn trophies, but all participants receive medals. Each season, the coordinator selects one runner as the recipient of the Healthy Kids Award. “This award is for someone who embodies the whole idea of being a healthy kid,”

Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre will present “On Your Feet,” the jukebox musical that follows the journey of Gloria and Emilio Estefan and their rise from anonymity in Cuba to stardom in the United States. The original production of

explained Atticks. “During my first season, I gave the award to an inspiring boy with autism who just gripped my heart. He showed up every week, ran his race, and never gave up.” At the end of the series, parents have the opportunity to participate in a mile run while their children watch. “I promote this because it’s a way for us to show our kids how much they inspire us,” noted Atticks. “Our kids come out every week and do their best. Let’s show them what their effort does for us.” To sponsor the Healthy Kids Running Series, visit https://healthykidsrunning series.org and search for the local series. DFCA became a nonprofit organization last year and is working on obtaining a second trout nursery in Mount Joy. “We are also working on a major stream bank restoration project with Donegal Trout Unlimited,” Crouser stated. Membership in the club hovers around 300 people, he noted, with about 50 active members. “We’d love to see that number go up,” he remarked. “We have a lot of activities planned for the coming year.” In April, the group is plan-

ning an invasive plant removal project. “We’ll be removing multiflora roses, which are not fun to remove, but it needs to be done,” Crouser said. “We definitely could use the help.” For more information on the DFCA and its membership drive, visit www.donegal creek.org or search for “Donegal Fish and Conservation Association” on Facebook. Membership and pins may also be purchased in person at Precision Fly and Tackle, 1957 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster.
