Honoring Veterans In 2021 t has been announced that the Mountville Memorial Day Parade will not occur this year. The Reese-Hall Mountville VFW Post 8757 will still place American flags at the graves of all veterans interred in the 11 cemeteries in and around Mountville on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31. In place of the Memorial Day Parade, the VFW Auxiliary Post 8757 decided to honor past and present members of the armed forces with tribute street banners around Mountville. Each banner, measuring 20 inches by 40 inches, will include a military picture of the service member, along with his or her name, rank, branch, and dates of service. Members of the VFW Auxiliary ex pressed their gratitude to the Mountville Borough for sponsoring the creation and distribution of these banners. Those interested in having a banner made should contact VFW Auxiliary members Mike Gienic at 717-625-5184 or Amy Marenick at 717-572-1797. Spots are limited and banners will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.

Keeping The Tradition Running

Although the Mountville Memorial Day Parade has been canceled, banners honoring veterans will be displayed in Mountville.

Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) is presenting the artwork of the Class of 2021. The senior exhibition, “Sincerely Yours, the Resilient, the Perseverant, the Tenacious, the Tired, & the Determined,” is on display at PCA&D’s Main Gallery at 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, and features one work of art by each senior in a physical exhibition. As part of a gallery internship, this exhibit was co-curated by five members of the Class of 2021: Nicole Denzler, Mandi Hall, Alexis Lebesco, Regina Marie Mehaffey, and Rachel Stork. Visitation can be arranged through a time-ticketed system at www.PCAD.edu. The concept of a digital thesis exhibition premiered last year to spotlight the Class of 2020. The digital platform was launched as a new annual tradition and innovative approach to providing a greater online presence and exposure for the graduating class. It will also serve as an ongoing archive of alumni work. This year, the digital

exhibition highlights the thesis work of 58 seniors from the animation and game art, fine art, graphic design, illustration, and photography and video departments. The work is available to view online at https://pcad.edu/gallery_exhibit /sincerely-yours. The student co-curator model, introduced with the Class of 2020, expanded this year into a class in which the co-curators explored the history and theory of exhibitions. It aims to display the individuality of its members within a coherent exhibition that reflects these unusual times. The exhibition is accompanied by a 137-page catalog designed by Kelly Phan, Class of 2022. In addition to the five co-curators, the featured artists are Brendon Scott Adams, Artzbeat, Isaac Baker, Frank Barbera, Joanna Becker, Dorinda M. Benner, Jeremy Bens-

PORK PICNIC ROLL

Before COVID-19 restrictions were enacted in March of 2020, a group of women was holding a monthly event called Story Marks. Story Marks focused on ladies gathering together for friendship and networking opportunities. Attendees also heard stories from women who have had experiences that others can learn from. This April, the first live and inperson Story Marks session in more than a year was held. Organizer Tracey Strohecker called the evening “amazing.” Strohecker had an agenda prepared for the evening, but as she looked around at the gathering of 20, she decided to take a slightly different course. “I happened to say,

‘Why don’t we go around and introduce ourselves and say a little something?’” she recalled. “It turned into a safe place to talk, and they began sharing. It was a small, intimate group, and it was really nice.” This month’s Story Marks will be held on Thursday, May 20, at 6:30 p.m. at Thorn Hill Vineyards, 1945 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster. The featured speaker at the May event will be local leader and coach Gwen Schuit. Schuit has a nursing background, and she is currently CEO of Friendship Community. She will speak about the ability to “Flex, Adapt, Shift, and Influence!” The opening speaker will be Kathy Burkhardt, who will share her story of how she was influenced and how she has moved forward as an influencer.

“In two weeks, we went from full-on carnival mode to a food truck drive-through,” said public information officer and event committee member Peter Taraborelli. “We put in so many hours to make that happen on top of volunteering, but we had a great turnout. The community came out to support us.” Taraborelli noted that the committee members are working closely with several local legislators to make sure they are doing everything they can to follow COVID-19 guidelines. Sanitizing stations will be placed at regular intervals around the event. Regularly sanitized rides will be provided by Penn Valley Shows. “Penn Valley Shows is a great partner to have,” stated Taraborelli. “They maintain their rides and make it a mission to restore a ride every year by repainting it and replacing the lights.” There will also be games and 18 food vendors, one of which will have pet food. A fireworks show is planned at dusk on May 21. In the event of inclement weather, the firework show will take place on May 22.

“Our hope is that we can offer a safe, fun, and unique way for the community to come out and support our all-volunteer station,” said Taraborelli. “This event is the largest annual fundraising event of the year for Mountville Fire Company, and we are thrilled that it is back.” Parking will be behind Froelich Park just off Ruby Street. Fire department members will direct parking traffic. For a chance to win a pair of unlimited ride writsbands, search for “Mountville Fire Company No. 1” on Facebook. LancasterHistory Takes On Digitizing Project BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Several museums and historical sites had to temporarily close their doors to the public as a result of the pandemic. One of them was LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster. being ‘called,’ and I was literally called on the phone,” he said. That was how Bauer became an associate rector at St. James Episcopal Church in Lancaster. After having lunch with a member of St. Edward’s Episcopal Church, Bauer applied and was interviewed for a position as rector at the church. He was installed in that position in the beginning of 2020. Bauer said he believes he came to St. Edward’s at just the right time. As a musician, Bauer possesses audio and video knowledge. Without knowing just how important those skills would be, Bauer said St. Edward’s did well during the pandemic. “I got my Doctor of Ministry from Duke (Divinity School) in Christian leadership, so I was trained to adapt,” noted Bauer. “I’m looking most forward to building something good,” said Bauer. “I would like if we can respond to whatever need is

before us with love and show people that no matter how alienating the world can feel, if you hang out here, you will feel like you’re in the presence of something holy. I would love if this place could become known for a home of faith seeking understanding so that you can come here and question everything.” St. Edward’s is located at 2453 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. When the Rev. Dr. Richard Bauer graduated with a Bachelor of Science in legal studies from Nova Southeastern University, he knew he didn’t want to be a lawyer. While attending school, he was also building a career in music; some of his songs were on MTV and he opened for musicians such as Joan Jett. After a year went by, he applied to a graduate program in religious studies at Florida International University. Soon enough, the faculty trained Bauer as an adjunct professor. Despite his graduate research, Bauer was not attending church. Then he became interested in meditating and, while meditating, realized that Jesus was the basis of his faith. “I couldn’t shake it,” he said. While on a trip to the Holy Land, Bauer and his wife were watching the baptisms of pilgrims in the Jordan River. Bauer saw a man with a woman who had scars on her face, and the man filled a five-gallon jug with water from the river. “It was

clear to me that this guy wanted to bring this big jug of healing water home with him on the plane, and that level of faith and hope that there’s a promise for healing struck me to my core,” noted Bauer. Suddenly, he knew what he was supposed to do with his life: ministry. A woman who worked at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and School in Fort Lauderdale watched Bauer’s band play every Saturday night. She knew Bauer’s education and teaching background, so she asked Bauer to talk to her church leader. “This guy and I started talking theology and travel and hit it off,” stated Bauer. “He immediately asked me to join his staff.” While at St. Mark’s, Bauer led the music program, taught middle school religion, and directed youth group. When Bauer was getting ready to graduate with a Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary in 2018, a headhunter was looking for the top pick of Bauer’s graduating class. This person turned out to be Bauer. “In church, we talk about

Kassidy Felsinger claimed the high jump at 4-6 and Olivia Wenzel won the triple jump at 34-1 while junior Faith Landis won the pole vault at 8-0.

The victory improved Hempfield’s league mark to 9-1 (11-1 overall) while Warwick fell to 8-1, 10-1. “We have them in the district power rankings,” Vogel stated, referring to Hempfield’s fifth-place rank in District Three Class AAA to Warwick’s sixth-place ranking. Therefore, assuming that Hempfield and Warwick conclude their respective seasons without any defeats, the Knights should finish as the top seed for Section One. On the path to their huge Section One showdown with Warwick, Hempfield took care of Conestoga Valley on Thursday, April 29. The Knights posted wins by margins of 25-14, 25-21 and 25-17 on the road. It was an outstanding night for the hitters as Lorelli and Givens each collected 16 kills. Orth led the team in digs with 17 while Michael Keen registered three blocks, and Lorelli and Bonner each notched one ace. BASEBALL Hempfield topped Cedar Crest 12-10 on Monday, May 3 at Crest. The Section One rivals slugged it out as the Knights came back from a sixrun deficit to post their fourth L-L League win of the year (4-5, 8-9 overall). The Knights held an early 2-0 lead until Cedar Crest answered with eight runs. Cameron Berger and Austin Dunlap each drove in a run during the Knights’ comeback. Luke Fiore, Peter Fiore and Logan Harelson each drew bases-loaded walks later in the inning to keep the threat alive. By the time the fourth inning was over, the Knights only trailed 8-7. The wildness that led to three bases-loaded walks in the fourth inning continued for Crest’s pitching in the fifth. A single and two hit batsmen loaded the bases followed

The Knights coming off another high-scoring Section One game in which first place Manheim Township topped Hempfield 15-8 in a Saturday morning game at Landisville. The Streaks remained unbeaten (7-0) in the L-L League. There was a big inning by the opponent in this game too as MT scored seven in the third. Luke Fiore’s two-run home run in the first inning was part of a threerun rally that gave Hempfield a brief 3-1 lead. Peter Fiore homered to drive in two runs - when Luke Fiore was on base, of course. That cut the lead to 7-5. In the fourth inning, Berger drove in one run and Luke Fiore hit his second home run of the game. Hempfield would go on to host Warwick in a Section One game on Wednesday, May 5. The Warriors defeated the Knights 11-2. GIRLS’ LACROSSE Coming off a loss to L-L League opponent Cocalico, the girls’ lacrosse team downed Kennard-

Kayla Brooks notched a hat trick while Maureen Krauser finished with a goal and an assist, helping Hempfield improve to 10-4 on the year. Also helping the Knights was goalie Eryn Murphy, who finished with six saves. Cocalico is chasing Manheim Township in the L-L League girls’ lacrosse standings. On Thursday night, April 29, the Eagles handed Hempfield its first league loss of the year. Hannah Custer scored 11 goals in the Eagles’ 18-9 win. The Knights fell to 8-1 in league play. The Eagles improved to 9-1 (12-2 overall). Brooks and Eide each recorded a hat trick while Brynn Axe added two more goals and one assist. BOYS’ LACROSSE Hempfield suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday, April 29 to Section One leader Manheim Township. The Streaks topped Hempfield 12-7 at Landisville. Ryan Hilton and Zack Antesberger each scored twice for the Knights while A.J McAlpine contributed with three assists. Coming through with one goal each were Julian Morales, Max Grube and Jason Hilton. Hempfield fell to 7-1 (10-1 overall) while the Streaks improved to 81, 8-3. SOFTBALL The softball team fell to 7-7 in the L-L League, starting a busy week with three games in as many days. The Knights blanked the Falcons 5-0 on Monday with junior Carley Ernst pitching a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts. Hempfield fell to 9-7 overall the next day thanks to a 6-5 loss at Elizabethtown. Ask a sixth-grade student at Kraybill Mennonite School how long it takes a beet seed to germinate, and she can tell you. Chances are, every student at Kraybill can tell you something specific about gardening thanks to a collaboration between parent volunteers, teachers and The Edible Classroom, a Washington Boro-based organization. Kraybill installed a school garden earlier this year, and every day students get outside to get their hands dirty while learning. The Kraybill garden came together after a chance meeting between Grace Julian, who runs The Edible Classroom with Beth Horst, and a parent at Kraybill. They started talking about gardening, and the parent

mentioned that Kraybill would love to have a garden. It just so happened that The Edible Classroom was looking for a space to create a community garden, since its other spaces in the county are school-specific. Although this garden is located at Kraybill, it will be the site of a summer camp open to the community this summer. Kraybill principal MJ Smith loved the idea of a school garden, and soon parent volunteer Aja Sides was on board. It turned out both Julian and Sides are certified Penn State Extension Master Gardeners, and they quickly bonded over their shared love of plants. Pets” grew from the love of one dog, Milo. Milo was rescued when he was a few years old and belonged to the nephew of Mulberry Art Studios’ owner, April Koppenhaver. After Milo developed arthritis and needed assistance with stairs, April offered to care for him. He became a fixture at Mulberry Art Studios, as he spent each day there by April’s side. At home, April’s husband, Charles E. “Charlie” Gaul II, especially enjoyed Milo’s company.

In November 2018, Milo died at age 16. Less than two months later, 93-year-old Charlie passed away. As a tribute to Milo and Charlie, April started the “We Love Our Pets” exhibition. Donations will be accepted throughout May, to support local nonprofit organization the Sebastian Foundation. Founded in 2004 by Amy Garrety, the Sebastian Foundation facilitates the adoption of unwanted animals, offering a second chance to pets that have been surrendered due to circumstances outside of their control or that have ended up in high-kill shelters.
