Helping Seniors Live With Dignity BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Matthew 25:40 emphasizes the importance of caring for “the least of these,” teaching that everyone deserves compassion. At Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim, the least will be getting the most due to a capital campaign designed to continue to provide quality care and support to seniors. “In honor of Mount Hope’s 50th anniversary in June 2019, Mount Hope launched a capital campaign to address a dated facility that needs tender loving care,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “We reached our halfway point with total donations and pledges coming in at just over $500,000. We are well on our way to the $1 million goal.” Help is still needed to reach the goal, she stated, which will allow the facility to upgrade its roof and parking lot area; improve Hempfield High School senior class officers (from left) Jacob Walker, Mili Ramani, Lilly Heilshorn, Markella Vassil, and (not pictured) Lorisa Shaffer

n June 1, the Hempfield High School (HHS) Class of 2021 was honored for its educational achievement at the HHS commencement ceremony. The event took place at the high school’s Georgelis Law Firm Stadium, 340 Mumma Drive, Landisville. Approximately 525 students graduated from HHS. This year’s valedictorian is the president of the senior class, Mili Ramani. The other nine of the Class of 2021’s top 10 students

O

were also recognized: Anne Akbar, Melissa Caracciolo, Regan Gillisse, Lilly Heilshorn, Colin Meldrum, Dillon Otto, Bridget Reheard, Claudia Schmitz, and Lily Wernoch. Two weeks prior to the commencement ceremony, Ramani and vice president Markella Vassil reflected on their time at HHS with the Merchandiser. M e r c h a n d i s e r : How did your senior year go? R a m a n i : For the first threequarters of the school year, I was

virtual. I had a sort of disconnect, which was difficult, but when I went back, I realized how much I missed being there in person. I was able to focus more once I was actively engaging in the classroom. It was really nice coming back to see everyone. V a s s i l : I’ve been in person all year. I would say my favorite part was getting to come to school on the first day because we went so long without seeing our classmates, our friends, even our teachers. It was a very memorable part of the year.

Merchandiser: Is there anything you want to tell the Class of 2021? Ramani: This year has been weird and difficult to say the least, but I’m so proud of everyone for pushing through it and finishing high school. It’s a big milestone, probably one of the first ones we reach, and I’m glad that we were able to get there together. Vassil : There has been so much uncertainty this year, but our class has done a great job handling everything. M e r c h a n d i s e r : What will you miss most about high school?

This past May, Hempfield High School (HHS) alumna Hannah Johnson was awarded Colby College’s 2021 Condon Medal. The Condon Medal honors a senior at Colby who exhibits the finest qualities of citizenship and has made the most significant contribution to the development of life at Colby. Established in 1920, the Condon Medal was made possible through the gift from Randall J. Condon, a member of Colby’s Class of 1886.

According to Johnson, the Condon Medal represents fully investing in the Colby community, which meant dedicating most of her time at Colby to helping students feel like they belong. “I struggled finding my stride at this school at first, and it was truly the people around me who helped me find my authentic self here,” stated Johnson. For many years, Johnson’s family has rented a lakefront house near Colby, located in Maine. When she attended HHS, Johnson ran crosscountry and needed to train over the summer. Johnson’s mother would drive her to Colby’s campus where she would run throughout the neighborhoods. When it came time for Johnson to apply to colleges, she applied to Colby on a whim and was accepted. During her time at Colby, Johnson held several positions on campus. She was a class senator for the Student Government Association, a community adviser, an area residence director, a Lives of Purpose mentor, a volunteer

scribe, a research assistant in the psychology department, and a front desk attendant at the Colby Museum of Art. Several staff members at Colby made an impression on Johnson. “My adviser, Tarja Raag, was really like a motherly figure for me,” said Johnson. “I was also super inspired by two of my religious studies professors: Ryan Harper and David Freidenreich. They really challenged the ways I think about religion and how we under-

stand the world around us.” After graduating from Colby with a psychology major and religious studies minor, Johnson plans to attend medical school and become an OB/GYN. “I think recognition like this is a bit overwhelming because so much of my life experiences are due to the support of so many people,” explained Johnson. “I share this award with everyone who’s been a part of my life throughout my journey at Colby!”

Discussion Group Sets Meeting The Chatting group will offer a discussion on the topic “Recent Survey Reveal Shifting Worldviews About God and Religion” on Monday, June 14. Chatting takes place every Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. via Zoom. Attendees will discuss the annual survey that assessed the worldviews of four generations - millennials (born 1984 to 2002), Gen Xers (born 1965 to 1983), baby boomers (born

1946 to 1964), and builders (born 1927 to 1945). To participate, readers may visit https://us02web .zoom.us/j/86190453518. Chatting, originally called Lifetree Café, is sponsored by several local churches from different denominations as a way to foster positive dialogue in the community. Golf With A Purpose

Local And Nearby Fair Schedule

Except for 2020, every year since 1994, Water Street Mission (WSM) has hosted a Drive Away Hunger Golf Tournament. This year’s tournament will occur on Friday, June 18, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. Supporting the general ongoing financial needs of caring for those experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County, WSM’s annual golf tournament invites local business professionals to enjoy a round of golf at a private club. After the match, participants will enjoy a catered meal with other players. “I’m looking forward to getting out on the course, developing relationships, and connecting people to the heart of Water Street Mission,” stated director of marketing Matt Clement. The golf tournament will help support services WSM provides for individuals experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County. WSM offers emergency shelter, residential programs, and community food bank at its Outreach Center, as well as medical, dental,

and behavioral health services. Additionally, WSM invests in prekindergarten and kindergarten education through its Wonder Club program and offers teen mentoring through its Teen Haven program. On average, WSM serves 400 meals each day in its dining hall; has 3,000 medical and dental visits every year; and hosts over 170 guests per night at the residential and Providence shelters. “Drive Away Hunger is a great way for businesses to get connected and know more about the heart of Water Street Mission,” said Clement. “For businesses, it seems like they appreciate how being connected to Water Street Mission has impacted their business both externally and internally. I think there is a lot that businesses can gain from partnering with Water Street Mission because what we do is so tangible.” Preregistration, which is required, can be completed at www.wsm.org/drive-away -hunger. Businesses interested in partnering with WSM can contact business ambassador Sandy Gambone at sgambone@wsm.org or 717358-2932.

Over the past seven years, Lifecycles has helped young people ride the equivalent of more than four times around the Earth on their bicycles. “I track all the mileage of our local rides and our bigger trips, and we have now ridden more than 110,000 miles,” said Lee DeRemer, who runs Lifecycles with his wife, Marcie. The organization is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18 and offers participants a

chance to enjoy friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus. “We offer the boys and girls a positive experience, encouragement, a challenge, goal setting, mentoring and spiritual growth,” Lee explained. “Because our program includes all of that, there’s no room left for bullying or people making fun of each other. … We don’t have kids tearing each other down. We like to say we find out what the teens are doing right, and we build on that.”

Lifecycles began its current season on April 19 and is looking for more riders as well as more volunteers. Currently, the group has a girls’ team that rides on Mondays in Lititz and three boys’ teams one in Marietta on Tuesdays, one in Landisville on Thursdays and another in New Holland also on Thursdays. The group also rides on two Saturdays a month. “This is 100% free for participants,” Lee noted. “There is never any cost for the riders. We have bikes, helmets

and food for them. We provide a meal after each ride.” The organization is also looking for more volunteers. “If you would enjoy investing in a teenager, there are teenagers who need to have the encouragement and the example you can set,” he stated. “If you enjoy riding, whether you’re young or old, slow or fast, there’s a ride group waiting for you.” The group is also looking for volunteers to help serve meals or sign in participants at weekly rides. Lee emphasized that Lifecycles is open to any youths in the county, and no experience with bike riding is necessary. “We don’t have tryouts,” he remarked. “If you show up at Lifecycles, we believe you’re supposed to be there.” Along with weekly rides, Lifecycle members have the opportunity to participate in longer challenges as well. A group of eight boys and five leaders will ride from the coast of Oregon to the coast of Delaware between Thursday, June 10, and Sunday, Aug. 8, covering 3,600 miles. Close to 50 others will participate in one of three weeklong challenge rides from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., later this summer.

Inspiration can be found in the backyards of Columbia. The Art in the Gardens tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, and will feature seven gardens. “This is the third year we’re doing this under the direction of Create Columbia,” said Kathy Hohenadel, adding that Create Columbia is a nonprofit dedicated to The garden of Joe and Deb Weisser promoting the town will be one of the stops on the Art and art. “We have a in the Gardens tour. mixture of new and “We’ll also have, while supreturning gardens on the tour. plies last, a variety of differWe like to pick gardens that ent plants from current or are all a little different from one another to give the tour a previous garden hosts available for purchase in the park,” nice variety.” Some of the gardens have Hohenadel said. Lee noted that he’s been impressed with the impact leaders have made on the riders and with the way the youths have responded to the program. “For three hours on one of those evenings, or five hours on a Saturday, we pry the phones out of the teens’ fingers, and they find out they can live through the experience,” he said with a laugh. In all seriousness, he noted that God has been present with Lifecycles since the beginning. “We have ridden safely for seven years,” he said. “That’s a miracle. God has protected us, He has provided for us and He has sustained us.” For more information on Lifecycles, visit www.life cyclesteam.org.

So far, the group has identified more than 1,200 U.S. veterans, 18 of whom are from the Revolutionary War. Blue Star Moms are mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers, and female legal guardians who have children serving in the military, National Guard, or reserves or who have children who are veterans.

Graduation from pg 1 Ramani: I’m an immigrant from India and I moved to Hempfield in sixth grade, and I’ve had an amazing experience. I felt so welcome from the very beginning, and everyone has been so supportive. I’m going to miss the community because it’s like a big family. I love it here. Vassil: I think I’m going to miss our teachers and the environment that Hempfield creates. It’s such a good, healthy, and friendly environment. I would also like to thank our administration for giving us an in-person commencement. Our administration has been

trying so hard to give us a good senior year and I thank them for everything they’ve done. After hearing that we were going to have an in-person commencement, that really motivated me and gave me that light at the end of the tunnel. They did their best to give us the best year we could have, given the circumstances. After graduating from HHS, Ramani will attend Johns Hopkins University for biomedical engineering and pre-med with the goal of becoming a doctor. Vassil will attend Temple University and major in exercise science.

The Lancaster County Youth Conservation School will take place on Monday to Friday, July 26 to 30. Open to students ages 14 to 16, this summer field school is made possible through a 43-year-old partnership between the Lancaster County Conservation District and local sportsmen’s clubs. The program focuses on outdoor activities and conservation of natural resources. This year, the school will be a hybrid of virtual and in-person learning. Students will gain knowledge about wildlife and conservation, leadership experience, and opportunities to hone their communication skills. Topics will include stream restoration, biodiversity, macroinvertebrates, forestry, canoeing, and wildlife management. Students will have opportunities to meet professionals in various environmental and conservation-related fields and discuss career options.

The conservation school will also include a virtual visit with author Natalie Warren. A lifelong paddler and river enthusiast, Warren was one of the first two women to paddle from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay in 2011. Her new book is “Hudson Bay Bound.” Warren will share stories from the more than 2,000-mile journey when she meets the students. “Hudson Bay Bound” is available from the Lancaster County Library System and for purchase from local bookstores. For more information and the application and to register, visit www.lancaster conservation.org. To receive a paper application, contact the Conservation District at 717-299-5361, ext. 5. Applications are due by Wednesday, June 23, and there is a registration fee. Remaining tuition is provided by Lancaster County sportsmen’s clubs and community organizations.

Natalie Warren, an author, paddler and river enthusiast, will virtually visit the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School.

public restrooms; update nursing stations and the therapy room; and renovate resident common gathering areas, such as two lounges and the dining hall. So far, 14 resident rooms have been renovated, with 29 still to be updated. Mount Hope has a mission of providing care to seniors regardless of their ability to pay, Wilson noted, adding that the capital campaign will help the facility continue to fulfill this mission, as much of the facility has not been updated since the home was built in the late 1960s. “The capital campaign will allow the facility to make improvements to continue to provide quality care,” Wilson said. “Every person deserves a dignified, well-maintained place to live. Contributing to the capital campaign will allow the home to continue to provide this care.” As the capital campaign continues, the public is invited to a virtual celebration, “Upon This Firm Foundation … Continuing Our Vision,” beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 16. A Zoom link will be available for the celebration at Mount Hope’s website beginning at 6:15 p.m. on the day of the event. Wilson said the celebration will include up-to-date information, personal testimonies of the care Mount Hope provides, an invitation and challenge to participate with a financial response and a vision for the future. “A challenge will be given to those participating in the virtual campaign celebration on how they may see themselves joining with Mt. Hope to ensure that this mission continues strong,” she stated. “The capital campaign will allow the facility to provide quality care for the long-term future.”

Wilson emphasized that Mount Hope provides a unique service. “There is an abundance of long-term care facilities and retirement communities in Lancaster County and surrounding areas for seniors in need of nursing care to live. Mount Hope allows seniors and disabled people to live with dignity, no matter their financial circumstances,” she explained, adding that the facility has achieved five stars, Medicare’s highest rating. “At its core, the Mount Hope mission is to serve the community and offer hope by providing affordable, quality nursing care in a wholesome Christian environment based on Christ’s model of care for ‘the least of these.’” For more information on Mount Hope, visit www.mthopenazarene.org or contact Wilson at 717682-8026.

The cast needs at least one man of color ages 40 to 70 to play a historical hero from the 1860s. The role is small, but prominent, and will feature an interactive script performed with five other male cast members. This year’s theme is “Unfortunate Events,” and the tour will explore the tragedies that have befallen the town throughout history. The hour-long walking tour will balance historical narrative with entertainment. The Rivertowne Trolley will be included in the event once again. Tickets will go on sale on Sunday, Aug. 1. For audition details, advertising opportunities, or ticket sales, contact Sara Mimnall at 717449-4254 or Rebecca Wright at 717-517-2442.
