SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
Saving The Lives Of Loved Ones
Lions Club Gives The Gift Of Mobility BY MARCELLA PEYRE-FERRY
ions Clubs International is well known for its commitment to help fight blindness, and this focus on providing assistance applies to the local Lions Clubs as well. At the community level, Lions are also responding to other requests for help. Recently, members of the East Petersburg Lions Club turned their efforts to helping a local resident who is paralyzed. The club helped to improve the resident’s quality of life by helping him pay down a loan for a car with lever controls. “We do whatever we see needs to be done for the local community,” East Petersburg Lions member Randy Rannels said. “In this case, we were able to help Andruw Sheffy.” Andruw, 22, has a hereditary condition called cavernous angioma. When Andruw was 13, a hemorrhage of blood vessels on his spinal column left him paralyzed from the waist down. Since then, he has recovered some movement and is looking forward to furthering his education and getting a job. At Penn State Hershey Medical Center, he learned to drive a lever-controlled vehicle and got his driver’s license, but obtaining a vehicle was a further obstacle. He learned that a federal government program would convert a vehicle to lever controls at no charge, but it required that the vehicle be no more than five years old and have fewer than 100,000 miles on the odometer. After searching, the Sheffy family decided on a new Nissan Kicks that met the requirements, plus had enough room to accommodate Andruw’s wheelchair. The Sheffy family was able to purchase the vehicle at a cost in the $25,000 range, but making the payments was a struggle.

“Project Lifesaver is for people who have cognitive impairment that makes them prone to wander,” said Kelly Osborne, community services officer and Project Lifesaver coordinator with the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J, Lancaster County. Now that the State Police officers serving in Lancaster are affiliated with Project Lifesaver, the service is available in all areas of the county. Individuals who are enrolled with Project Lifesaver wear a bracelet connected to a transmitter set to a designated radio frequency assigned to that person. If the individual wanders, the battery-operated device emits a signal that can be traced by law enforcement. “Should a (participant) go missing, the caregiver calls a local police department. (Police officers) plug in the frequency to pick up that specific transmitter,” explained Osborne, See Project Lifesaver pg 2 A car with lever controls allows Andruw Sheffy to drive.

A friend who is one of Andruw’s former teachers in the Hempfield School District is a member of the Columbia Lions Club. He suggested Andruw ’s father, Eric, contact his local Lions Club for assistance. “It wasn’t easy to sit down and write a letter (and ask for help). I wanted to make it perfect,” Eric said. “I’ve never asked for anything in my life.” The East Petersburg Lions helped facilitate a grant from the Northeast Pennsylvania Lions Service Foundation in the amount of $10,500. The club also made its own contribution of $2,500. Both amounts will go toward paying down the principal amount of the car loan to make the purchase financially manageable for the family. “This is the first time that our club has done something like this,” said Rannels. “It really connected with us. This is something we’re proud of. “ “It’s really generous of them. I still can’t believe it,” Andruw shared. Being able to drive allows Andruw to get around on his own. “This is life-changing for him,” Eric said. “It will allow him to gain some freedom and get back and forth to school and pursue a job.” Andruw and his father attended a recent Lions Club meeting, where they got to meet the members, answer questions and show them the vehicle. “They were all so warm and inviting,” Andruw said. “What they do for the community is just awesome. The Lions are there to help people.” “‘Thank you’ is not a strong enough (phrase) to thank (them) for (their) generosity,” said Eric, who is so impressed by the Lions that he is even joining the club. “I would like to be a part of an organization that helps people and helps the community,” he said.

He noted that Sundays during the summer through Aug. 28 will be marked by the presence of national and international recording artists on the stage. Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace spoke following Kirchner. She recognized former mayors Charlie Smithgall and Art Morris, both in attendance. “This institution … is a labor of love that has been happening for 60 years,” said Sorace, who also recognized LPAF board members. Dave Wauls, past LPAF president had created a trivia quiz about the amphitheater for attendees to complete. Using true and false questions, he queried guests about the entertainers who have performed there - no Ricky Martin, but Arlo Guthrie and his daughter made an appearance. Wauls also entertained with ice breakers that involved sharing memories of concerts. Tom Ellis, interim president of LPAF, spoke about the history of the amphitheater, starting in 1957. “The iconic structure was a vision getting ready to be fulfilled,” he said of the amphitheater, pointing out that Armstrong created the roof of the structure, which only needed its first repairs this year. He noted that the Sertoma Club put together a leadership team in 1959 and then built and commissioned the amphitheater before turning it over to the city. In 1962, the iconic building opened for its first summer with the New Holland Band on the roster, along with a number of individuals and

White Horse Relief Center exists to provide: • Relief-kit supplies for CAM, MCC, Samaritan’s Purse, and other similar organizations. • Center for quilting, sewing, soap-making, and relief-kit packaging. • A warehouse for distribution of relief supplies. • Office Space for Old Order Amish Hospital Aid. • A place for the local plain community to volunteer their time for relief and missions projects. • An opportunity for the local elderly to volunteer as desired, possibly on a scheduled weekly basis. • A local channel for monetary and volunteer resources to be utilized for missions abroad. • A planned location for MCC meat canning. • Sorting inspecting, packing, and shipping of area-produced relief kits. • Office space for Old Order Amish Hospital Aid.
Our Mission: To provide a place for the Anabaptist Community to come together and support missions, around the world, in the name of Christ. Our purpose is to have a location for warehousing and distribution relief supplies more efficiently and in larger quantities, and to provide a place for the local plain community to volunteer their time for relief and mission projects.

Hempfield High School Graduation
HHS Honors Class Of 2022 More than 500 students joined the ranks of Hempfield High School (HHS) alumni w he n t he co m me n c e me nt ceremony was held for the Class of 2022 on May 25. The school’s 112th commencement ceremony began at 6 p.m. at the school’s Georgelis Law Firm Stadium. D u r i n g t h e e ve n t , t h e s t u d e n t s h e a rd r e m a r k s and words of wisdom and encouragement from several speakers. S c h o o l b o a rd p res i d e nt Grant Keener, a member of the HHS Class of 1987, was the first to address the group. “Tonight marks the beginning o f t h e n e x t c h a p te rs o f your lives,” he said. “The experiences of the past four years have prepared you to tackle the challenges ahead, grow i n your careers, and continue giving back to your community.” “Every graduating class has their own story,” said Hempfield School District superintendent Michael Bromirski. “My hope is that each one of you knows that you are also able to write your own story. … You have started writing your book of your life, and … we are all authors of that own book. We get to choose the story or stories we tell, the characters by our side, the genre of the book, and more.” Each year, the commencement committee selects a theme for the student commencement addresses, and this year’s theme was “What Perseverance Makes Possible.” Student speakers included valedictorian Mackenzie Ridilla, Student Council president Jack Kirchner, Danny Bennett, and Mekkai Williams. In her speech, “Do Hard Things,” Mackenzie said, “I’m sure as we’ve all looked back over the years, there have been many pivotal points where we had to decide between the difficult, intimidating choice and the comfortable, easy one. … Choosing the more difficult option is often the most rewarding path.” She shared her story of making the difficult choice to join the cross-country team and how she benefited from that choice in the long run. “Choosing to become comfortable with the

uncomfortable is probably one of the hardest things to do, but I believe it is one of the most significant ways you can put yourself on the path to success,” she continued. “Do hard things. Take that leap. If you sit back and wait for life to drag you along, you’ll never know what’s possible.” Jack titled his speech “Turning the Page.” “Like rivers, our paths to this point were not linear,” he shared. “We encountered rapids and obstacles along the way, but we maneuvered around them. … And now we’re all at the point where we are converging in one spot for the very last time as we prepare to start our next chapter.” “I am excited to see the change we will bring to the world,” he added. “Tonight marks the end of the Hempfield chapter. We are turning the page and beginning a new chapter or era in our lives.” Danny’s speech was titled “Failure Leads to Success.” He began by sharing the stories of Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, and Oprah Winfrey, all of whom encountered failures and criticism before achieving success. “As we continue to look through history, we will find that nothing great has come without perseverance,” he shared. “There will always be people trying to stomp on your dream
a n d d e ra i l yo u f ro m t h e success you know you can reach.” “Success and failure must coexist,” he added. “A success doesn’t happen without failure. I’ve come to realize that it’s not loss, failure, or heartache that defines us, but how we react when these obstacles of life are thrust upon us.” In his speech, “Perseverance: A Success Story,” Mekkai noted, “We have all had to wo r k ex t re me ly h a rd a n d p e r s e ve r e t o m a k e t h i s moment possible.” He commended his classmates for pressing forward through the challenges of high school. “No matter how many times you fail at something, you must continue trying,” he said. “If there is one thing I want you to carry with you, it is this: Understand that you’re yo u r ow n e n e m y. Yo u ’ r e responsible for your own successes, your own failures. However, failure is never a permanent condition. Rather, it’s just the beginning. Your plights do not define you. It is how you overcome them that does.” “Wherever life takes you, classmates, just remember to keep pushing forward and continue to persevere,” he concluded. The high school administration gave a charge to seniors. After the Class of 2022 was presented, the chamber choir performed a choral benediction and the Hempfield alma mater. Class president Dylan Bard closed the ceremony with a few remarks. “After 2,160 days - or 3,110,400 minutes - together, we have reached a point where we part ways from our friends, leaders, and educators to pursue our life, our passion, and our dream in the real world. This task will not only be difficult but will also shape who we become for the remainder of our lives.” He then invited his classmates to turn their tassels, symbolizing their transition from students to alumni. Lucas was born into his association with professional basketball. His mother, Malin, who is co-owner, has coached basketball for more than a decade, and she has played the game nearly her whole life. She was chosen as one of eight young women from Sweden to attend basketball high school, and she was selected to be a member of the team that represented Sweden in the world championships. She also got married and moved to Lancaster County, where Lucas was born. The Mid-Atlantic division stretches from Massachusetts to Virginia. The Thunder finished this season 6-6 and went into playoffs in fifth place. “ We were invited to participate in the Brotherly Love Pro Am in Philadelphia,” said Malin. Lucas added that 15 current or former NBA players will take part in the Pro Am, and he was excited to see how the Thunder players would do.
At the Thunder’s last regular-season home game, Lucas was presented as a team owner. “The players gathered around me, and I could see they were happy for me,” he said. “That meant a lot.” Lucas added that the organization is more than a business venture for him and his mom. “It is special to see we are making an impact on players’ lives on and off the court,” he said. “This team is family and whether we win a championship or not, we will still be family.”

In January 2020, then-15year-old Lucas Morrison of Manheim was the stat guy for the Ephrata Thunder, a semipro men’s basketball team playing in the American Basketball Association. A lot has changed in two years. The team is now called the Red Rose Thunder, and it now plays in the Mid-Atlantic division of the East Coast Basketball League. Lucas, now 18, is an official team owner - the youngest owner of a professional basketball team in the country. As the stat guy, Lucas handled promotions, announced games, and helped out at practice. As an owner, his duties have changed. “I have different levels of responsibilities,” he said. “I like to look at improving every year,” added Lucas, noting that improvement applies to graphic design and the team’s website, along with team performance. Lucas noted that switching leagues has also meant changes. “There are just over 30 teams and a lot more regulations,” he said, noting that each team has its own website with stats, a roster, and a schedule. “You have to upload stats and video within 48 hours after a game,” said Lucas, who noted that he likes how that allows the team to strategize. “You can
