When the Goodwill Fire Company No. 1 merged with three other Manor Township fire companies to become Blue Rock Fire Rescue (BRFR) in 2011, the Blue Rock Support Group (BRSG) was created. As an auxiliary to the new entity, BRSG coordinates Blue Rock apparel for BRFR members, hosts annual banquets, and contributes to the purchases of new apparatus. It also hosts the annual Washington Boro Tomato Festival.

Located on a 23-acre organic farm at 150 Letort Road, Millersville, Homefields Care Farm is a nonprofit community-supported agriculture (CSA) program that provides employment and training for disabled individuals. Hundreds of people who have a disability or other barrier to traditional employment have engaged at Homefields, where they grow organically minded produce for community shareholders. The farm is currently home to six adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “What I love most about working here is the people,” stated farm manager Katie Landis. “Everyone is happy to be here.” Homefields’ season runs for 24 weeks, from the last week of May to the beginning of November. People can purchase shares of the harvest, which can be customized depending on the individual’s needs. Payment plans are also available. Throughout the season, Homefields also hosts events, such as its Talks in the Field program, annual Classic Golf Tournament, and Picnic in the

Fields. The Talks in the Field program connects local experts to the community on a wide range of environmental and wellness topics, including landscape design, storm water management, foraging, yoga, and native plant gardening. Homefields’ 25th annual Classic Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, Sept. 24, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crosslands Pass, Millersville. Readers can find more information about this event at www.homefields.org/golf. The annual Picnic in the Fields event will occur on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the farm. “This organization is a beating heart for people who cannot stand alone and need other opportunities in life and in work,” stated Allison G. Hawthorne, vice president of the board of directors. “That’s what motivated us to brand ourselves as a care farm and what motivates me to provide opportunities where opportunities don’t exist. I’m here to give a hand.” Homefields is interested in connecting with certified B corporations to launch its Fund a Farmer project. Fund a

Together Again: Aaron’s Acres Campers Ready To Get Back In The Saddle able to offer some virtual programming to Aaron’s Acres campers through Zoom calls and social media. Now that the campers can visit the stable in person, they will be able to enjoy riding, grooming, and leading the horses, along with learning about the barn operations and helping keep the stable clean. According to Paskoff, there is nothing better than seeing a camper get on a horse. “Whether it’s for the first time or for the 10th time … he or she is riding the horse,” said Paskoff. “For many of our campers, it is also unconditional acceptance from the horses (that is so important).” Paskoff added that the GMTRC staff are patient and kind as they help support each child with the goal of a safe, positive experience. GMTRC program director Stephanie Fleck will be working with Aaron’s Acres campers for the first time this summer, and she is looking forward to the experience. “We are thrilled to have the

campers back on the property,” she said. “We look forward to witnessing the physical and emotional interactions the campers will have when they encounter a horse.”

An Aaron’s Acres camper gets a hand from Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center staff members during a visit to the stables.

R073094

Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, is “beyond excited” to be taking Aaron’s Acres campers back to Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) this summer, and staff at GMTRC are happy to be welcoming groups back to the barn at 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster. Aaron’s Acres provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with special needs. GMTRC works to enhance the lives of individuals with special needs through equine-assisted activities. Paskoff was quick to point out several of the benefits the horseback riding experience offers to campers, including increased self-esteem and confidence, improved flexibility, improved balance and strength, improved coordination, and the sense of independence, even with support staff walking along next to the camper. In 2020, COVID-19 restrictions limited physical interactions between the two organizations, although GMTRC was

Youth, Pre-College Art Classes Planned Tthe Center for Creative Exploration (CCE) at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D), 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will host youth and pre-college classes this summer. Over three weeks in July, beginning on Monday, July 12, the CCE will host dozens of weeklong, in-person youth art classes. Students in grades one to nine can take morning, noon, and afternoon classes, choosing from a variety of offerings in each timeslot. The daily schedule allows time for supervised lunches and snack breaks on campus between classes. This year, classes will return to an inperson format. Apart from foundational classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking, this summer features a number of new classes on more

specific topics, such as Animal Specimen Drawing, Urban and Public Art, Tabletop Game Design, Creating Art in Photoshop, and Exploring Cultures Through Craft. To better help parents balance work with their children’s time in camp, CCE has partnered with co-working space The Candy Factory, Warehouse D, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, to offer a discounted weekly rate for adults with children in art classes. Parents are invited to drop their children off for camp in the morning, walk or drive two blocks to The Candy Factory to work, and then pick their children up when classes end. The pre-college courses are designed for students in ninth through 12th grades, allowing them to earn college credit. The

two-week intensive classes with professional artists and faculty will be offered on campus or online or via a hybrid option. Classes will begin on July 12 and will run in two consecutive two-week sessions, finishing by Friday, Aug. 6. Among the pre-college options are foundational classes in figure drawing, observational painting, color theory, 3D modeling in Autodesk Maya, and portfolio preparation. Other pre-college classes focus on graphic design/visual branding, concept art, digital painting in Adobe Photoshop, video production, creative writing, introduction and advanced 2D animation in Adobe Animate, and printmaking. Summer Vibes At PA Beaches BY WENDY ROYAL

Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state. Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to mid-September. Many of these beaches

Faith, fun and fellowship will take center stage when Cavod Academy hosts a theater camp at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Campers will perform “Singin’ in the Rain Jr.” and will spend two weeks learning all about live theater while making friends, said Connie Dienner, executive director. “The camp is a chance for the campers to learn how to work together to create a show from start to finish,” she noted. “They really bond during camp. It’s a great time for friendship and relationship building.” The camp is open to youths ages 10 to 18 and will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays from Monday, Aug. 2, through Thursday, Aug. 12. On Friday, Aug. 13, the camp will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the end of the camp, the campers will put on a full production, complete with costumes, lighting and music; performances will be held at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, and Sunday, Aug. 15. Cavod is a faith-based program, and in addition to rehearsal, the camp will feature devotional time and time for sharing. Master classes will be taught by theater professionals as well. “It’s really impressive what the kids can pull off in two

weeks,” said Julie Haney, artistic director of Cavod’s new Manheim location, which will open later this summer. “The camp gives them a chance to really develop their theater skills.” This is the 10th year Cavod has offered a summer theater camp. It’s a natural extension of the New Holland-based nonprofit’s mission, Dienner said. “Our slogan is, ‘Create With Purpose,’” she stated. “The strength of Cavod is believing in the abilities of all people and pulling out their God-given talent.” Dienner stressed that the camp is open to anyone, regardless of theater background. “You don’t need any experience,” she said. “Everyone is very supportive, and

Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of Lancaster County is offering several programs for children ages 5 to 12. Held at various locations throughout Lancaster County, these programs include 5-Day Club, the online Zoom Into 5-Day Club, a vacation Bible school (VBS), and Camp Good News. All workers are screened as required by CEF’s Child Protection Policy. The 5-Day Club is a free, 90-minute club held each day for five consecutive days for children ages 5 to 12. It includes Bible lessons, missionary stories, songs, Scripture memorization, and games. Several clubs are available at different times of day and at various locations. Call the CEF office at 717-5695412 to register for a club. Zoom Into 5-Day Club is similar to an in-person 5-Day Club, but it is conducted via Zoom. While still free, registration is required. Last year’s event morphed into a food truck festival due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year’s Tomato Festival will return to its true form when it is held on Saturdays, July 10 and 17, from 3 to 9 p.m. The rain-or-shine event will take place at the Washington Boro Community Park, 2010 River Road. Stands will begin serving food at 3 p.m., two hours before the carnival games and live music will kick off. For the first time, Barnett’s Farm Market and Greenhouse will supply the tomatoes. Folks traditionally queue up for tomato sandwiches and, in recent years, BLTs. In 2017, the BRSG sold 3,000 bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches during the two days of the festival. In addition to tomato sandwiches, there will be hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue, soft-serve ice cream, corn soup, fruit, candy, and more. On July 10, the bands Border Line and Relics will perform songs from many genres, and two bluegrass bands, Hammer Creek and Barley & Steele, will perform on July 17. There will be opportunities to enter a drawing for a Vizio 50-inch LED smart television, a Samsung Chromebook laptop, a Fitbit, or $100 cash prizes. “I’m looking forward to people coming out to enjoy the big community event and the food,” said BRSG member Richard Schock. Proceeds from the festival will benefit BRFR. Additional help is needed to make the Tomato Festival a success. Those interested in assisting in the kitchen or with the games may call Schock at 717-951-6411 and leave a message. To learn more about the Tomato Festival, search for “Washington Boro Tomato Festival to benefit Blue Rock Fire Rescue” on Facebook.

Brad Zuke, chair of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series committee, said that each year the group endeavors to bring acts that represent a wide range of musical genres. In 2020, many of the bands that were booked to play just happened to be fronted by women. “It looked like it was going to be the year of the woman,” noted Zuke. “When everything was canceled, agents and bands wrote back and said, ‘Can we just move ahead to next year?’ That was our starting point (in creating this year’s schedule).” Indeed, only The Big Takeover, a reggae band scheduled to perform on Aug. 1, was not on the 2020 roster. Zuke noted that contracting bands to play the venue can take several years. He listed scheduling factors for both the performer and the amphitheater, along with travel arrangements and current visas for the performers. “Several years ago, we had Old

Blind Dogs from Scotland (play a concert),” he said. “It took us six years to finally have them perform here.” This year, the opening concert on July 11 will feature Bakithi Kumalo, a South African bass player who was one of the top session musicians in his country when Paul Simon went there to develop his album “Graceland” in 1985. “Simon invited him to America to finish studio sessions,” said Zuke of the Grammy Award-winning Kumalo, who eventually settled in the U.S. Both Maggie Rose, who will perform on July 18, and Thornetta Davis, who will perform on July 25, are award-winning artists. “Maggie is amazing,” stated Zuke, who noted that Rose makes her home in Nashville. “You don’t typically think of funk, soul, blues, and rock in terms of the Grand Ole Opry,” he noted, adding that Rose has appeared there many times.

Davis, a recipient of several Detroit Music Association awards, is known as that city’s Queen of the Blues. Additional August concerts will include Southern country singer Paul Thorn on Aug. 8. Vanessa Collier, who will play on Aug. 15, has received blues music awards as an instrumentalist for horn, but Zuke noted that she also plays guitar and sings. He stated that the Kenny Rogers Band, which will appear on Aug. 22, is the real deal. “(These) are the musicians that played with Kenny as opposed to being a cover band. These guys helped write the music and played the original music,” he said. On Aug. 29, a Live Aid Tribute Show will celebrate one of the world’s biggest concerts by featuring talented local musicians. Readers who would like to know more about the concerts, which will follow current health protocols, may visit www.longspark.org.

Caldwell Named Craft Professional Of The Year ABC Keystone recently announced that the 2021 Craft Professional of the Year Award in carpentry has been presented to George Caldwell of Holtwood from Wohlsen Construction Company, Lancaster. Award criteria for the Craft Professional of the Year

Law Firm Opens New Main Office Attorneys Chad Rankin and William Gregory, partners and cofounders of Rankin & Gregory dba RG Injury Law recently announced that their personal injury law firm has opened a new main office at 1476 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. The new office offers easy access from Routes 30, 283 and 222 and from Lancaster city. It also provides space for safely serving injured clients while adhering to COVID-19 and post-pandemic safety measures. The new office offers ample space to accommodate physically distanced meetings, an air purification system and enhanced professional CDCrecommended cleaning and

sterilization procedures to ensure that the legal staff and clients remain safe even after the pandemic ends. Rankin & Gregory opened its first office, in Rohrerstown at 2173 Embassy Drive, Lancaster, in January 2014. The legal team at Rankin & Gregory will also continue to meet with clients at its former headquarters office on Embassy Drive as well as its offices at 342 E. Main St., Leola, which opened in 2015, and 357 Locust St., Suite 100, Columbia, which opened in 2019, shortly before the pandemic caused businesses to temporarily serve clients through fully-online services.

The 10,000-square-foot Lititz Pike building underwent a transformation from its previous use by a clothing store. This location houses an accessible reception area, 15 offices, three conference rooms, three bathrooms, a copy center and a kitchenette staff room. Calabrese Good Architects (CGA) designed the project and served as general contractor. Visitors will experience special design touches upon entering the new Lititz Pike office. The reception area features a floor-to-ceiling wooden wall, a glass-walled interior showcasing a centralized conference room and a

traditional iron chandelier. Pennsylvanian artisan Bradlyn Zimmerman, owner of The Ole Wood Shack in Shippensburg, was involved in the renovation project. Zimmerman custom-crafted the new office’s main conference room table and credenza with live-edge kiln-dried slabs of wood using wood from locally-sourced black walnut trees. To learn more, visit www.rginjurylaw.com, call 717-656-5000, email help@rginjurylaw.com or chat 24/7 through the aforementioned website. Make It With Wool Contest Announced The Pennsylvania Make It With Wool Contest will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2. The contest will be held in the PA Preferred Banquet Hall at the Farm Show Complex, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. The contest is open to anyone who sews, knits, or crochets garments with wool or other animal fibers. Expert judges will handle the garments and meet with the contestants. Judging is based on several criteria, including appropriateness to contestant’s lifestyle, fit and overall appearance, coordination of fabric/yarn with garment style and design, the contestant’s presentation, construction quality, creativity in design and use of wool, and the garment’s conveying and promoting the beauty, comfort, and versatility of wool. Contestants will be divided into age categories. All fabrics or yarns used in the body of

the garment must be 60% or more animal fiber. Interfacings, linings, and trims do not need to be wool. The Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association and other donors will provide the funding for prizes for the winners in each category. The winner in the Junior division, for youths ages 13 to 16, and the winner in the Senior division, for those ages 17 to 24, will be eligible to compete at the National Make It With Wool contest to be held in San Diego in January 2022. There is a registration fee, plus an additional testing fee per fabric/yarn used. To request the registration form and other information, contact Linda Siegel at 717-2741197 or linda@lebaweb.com. All who register will receive a piece of Pendleton wool. To learn more, visit www.makeitwithwool.com.
