J ames Emig of Wrightsville has been riding motorcycles since he was 16 years old. Emig, callsign “Uncle Jimmy,” began hosting Wednesday night dinner rides in April of this year to create an environment for riders to make connections with each other. Each Wednesday night at 6 p.m., Emig and his wife, Mindi, meet at the Rutter’s in Mountville, with an open invitation to anyone who wishes to join them. The group rides for 45 minutes to a destination where participants share dinner“Mytogether.wifeand I were thinking about how we’re strong believers in creating good surroundings,” said Emig. “Some people like to do it to have a date night once a week and others to be surrounded by friends or just to have a regular faith-based outing. The response we’ve received has been awesome and it’s become important to a lot of people.” James and Mindi are members of Victory Church in Lancaster and were inspired by the monthly meeting of the Victory Riders, but wanted to host something more frequent. The dinner rides average eight to 15 riders each week, and the Emigs plan to continue the tradition next year. The ride is affiliated with Bikers For Christ, a motorcycle ministry that James joined seven years ago and that Mindi joined three years la ter.

Just prior to March 19, Svitlana Shekh, living in the Donetsk region of Ukraine with her two young daughters, made the decision to leave. The war was intensifying. “Every night Russian fighter jets flew overhead,” she recalled. “We had spare clothing next to us (as we slept), so we could pick up and leave any minute.” Player Sets Sights On

Bella Vogel first found her passion for athletics at the age of 5, when she began playing soccer. By age 10, she was competing on a boys’ soccer team, but she found that the sport didn’t quite challenge her enough. Searching for a sport that could match her competitive drive, Vogel discovered rugby, and five years later she has her sights set on competing in the Olympics as a rugby player. “She loves the contact aspect and how intense rugby is,” said Tobye Thompson, Vogel’s mother. “It was the next step for us, and we never looked back. It’s definitely her sport.” Vogel began playing for Penn Legacy and now competes locally with the Knightmares rugby club. For the last two and a half years, Vogel has played with national team The Rugby Advantage. This past July, Vogel spent 10 days training with her team in New York City before flying to Utah to compete in a two-day tournament against 24 teams from across the United States. Vogel is also one of the youngest rugby referees in Pennsylvania and refereed the collegiate women’s Division III state championship as an affiliate of the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Referee Society. Warm Welcome frompg 1

On March 19, Svitlana drove the three to the Russian border. Donetsk has been under Russian occupation since 2014. The Shekhs crossed the Russian border and drove more than 1,500 miles north to the Latvian border, where Svitlana was advised to think hard about crossing because she would not be allowed to return. Svitlana’s husband, David, was waiting for her in Latvia, and she chose to go. David had been working in Germany as a ceramic tile installer. From Latvia, the family drove more than 1,200 miles to Germany, and from there they were able to fly to Boston, landing on JuneThe3.Shekhs came as part of a group of five families, but there are many more who want to leave Ukraine or are internally displaced persons and in need of help, according to Konstantin Reznik, a member of Bethany Slavik Church in Ephrata. The church has organized the Refugee Welcome Fundraising Dinner, which will be held on Friday, Sept. 16, at the Ephrata Business Center, 400 W. Main St., at 6 p.m. The meal will feature refugees sharing their stories and opportunities for attendees to sponsor families for housing, food, and transportation. Homemade foods that will be served will include borscht, katleti, and galupsi. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, may be obtained transformed/2022-09-16./refugee-welcome-dinnerwww.bethanyslavic.org/eventsatRezniksaidthatthechurchitsmissions ministry into the Ukraine War Refugee Aid Fund on the second day of the invasion of Ukraine and began raising money to help support those still in Ukraine and families that had come to the U.S. “The war is raging on even though it’s not on the front pages anymore,” said Reznik. “We are continuing to help evacuate people.” The Shekhs speak to family members in Ukraine daily. The current situation there is a stark contrast to the Shekhs’ new life in Ephrata. “There’s no public water,” translated Reznik, who noted that water is available twice a week for a few hours at a time. “You will not see any civilian men on the street,” Reznik said. “If a man walks outside, he will be conscripted to (serve on) the frontlines.” Most businesses are closed because there are no men to work. Women drive taxis or sell produce to support their families. Before Svitlana left, she and her mother took over her father’s meat deliveries because he could not go outside. Svitlana and David have avoided talking about the war in front of their children, but the situation did not go unnoticed by oldest daughter Nikol. While looking at a possible home in Ephrata, Nikol noticed the size of the basement.

Starting on Sunday, Sept. 18, the Veritas Community will start a new sermon series titled “The Cruciform Life.” The Veritas Community gathers on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. at HUB 450, 450 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The first 15 minutes of each gathering is dedicated to fellowship time.

“Look how big the basement is,” she told her father. “It’s a great place to hide from the bombs.” “We tried to limit their exposure, but they still pick up (things),” said David, who noted the conversation brought tears to his eyes.

James now serves as the elder for the tri-state chapter, which covers eastern Pennsylvania, northern Delaware and New Jersey. The organization focuses on Christian ministry through motorcycle riding and events and has chapters in every state as well as 21 other countries. “I was first introduced to the ministry 12 years ago, and I felt like my calling was secured,” James said. “We attend motorcycle rallies and events. Our mission is to serve the culture and be a vessel for Christ, and I’ve seen so many lives changed through the ministry for the better.” As the tri-state chapter elder, James communicates with his chapter on a weekly basis and organizes events such as the dinner ride. “Anyone is invited to join the ride. It doesn’t matter what you ride; it’s that you ride,” added James. Bikers For Christ was founded in California over 30 years ago to provide a Christian ministry for motorcyclists. The group has grown in size and ambition over the years, now including thousands of members across several chapters. It is considered one of the largest motorcycle ministries in the world. They do everything from fudge to brownies, breads, cookies and muffins.”Proceeds from the Fall Fest benefit the Residents’ Council and are used in-house for events such as a New Year’s Eve celebration, to fund staff Christmas presents and to bolster the retirement community’s benevolent fund. Proceeds are also given to various local nonprofits, including Hands Across the Street and Luthercare Kids. Perrone noted that the Fall Fest is a tradition at St. John’s. “It’s always the third Saturday in September,” she said. “We have people who come from all over the county and into York County. Vogel maintains a rigorous training schedule six days a week. On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays she trains at Team Beast Mode in Lancaster, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays she practices for three hours with the Knightmares. Following her team practice, she trains further with the boys’ rugby team. To raise the funds needed to maintain her demanding training schedule, Vogel and her family operate a market outside of their home in Washington Boro called The Petal on Penn. The market sells produce grown by the family. “We do a lot of things to fundraise and keep up with her training,” said Thompson. “Bella grows and sells the produce; every penny goes straight to her and supports her training.” Vogel’s family also runs the Petal Pot Market, attending different events and sell lemonade. The Petal Pot Market has served events such as weddings and the Washington Boro Tomato Festival, and it will be present at the Conestoga Car Show on Saturday, Sept. 24. Vogel is homeschooled, and her flexible curriculum allows her to manage her intense schedule in pursuit of her ambitious goals. She is also a member of the Cornerstone Co-op, where she takes multiple classes with other homeschooled students. “Bella has aspirations to get into the Olympics in 2028 as a player on the USA Youth National Team,” said Thompson. “The goal is for her to be invited to USA rugby camp, where she would have an opportunity to prepare and qualify.” For more information or to support the Petal Pot Market, visit potmarket.com/.https://thepetal
