How to be mindful of wildlife over the winter BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
I
f you reside in Lancaster County’s rural communities, you are likely well acquainted with the area’s wildlife. Whether you own a farm in the Buck or live among the scenic fields that surround Strasburg and Millersville, you have probably become familiar with the herds of deer that meander onto your property. Even those who live in the Southern End’s suburban communities are often visited by foxes and squirrels that want a snack from their bird feeders. The patterns of wild animals change during the cold months, however, and being mindful of their behavior can make the winter season safer for both you and your neighbors out in nature. Lisa Sanchez is a park naturalist with the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation. Every winter, Sanchez travels across the county to educate the public on the seasonal changes
that occur in nature. She also debunks several misconceptions about local wildlife. “This is a popular time of year for people to feed birds in their backyards. People always ask me how to get rid of the hawks who prey on the cardinals and chickadees who visit their bird feeders,” Sanchez said. “You can’t; it’s a part of nature, and hawks are protected by law. I always jokingly tell them, ‘Well, it’s still a bird feeder.’” Another common misunderstanding that Sanchez frequently addresses is the migration patterns of birds. Songbirds such as tree swallows, wood thrushes and red-winged blackbirds fly south for the winter due to a lack of mosquitos and other insects that make up their diet. Other birds have adapted their diet to rely on seeds and berries, making an annual migration unnecessary. Many years ago, robins were seen as a sign of spring’s return; today, these birds can be seen throughout the winter as they scrounge for

When many people hear the term “professional wrestling,” they picture the ostentatious getups and dramatic performances associated with companies such as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). The professional wrestling promotion is notorious for hosting extravagant shows that combine athleticism with intense theatrics, the likes of which have turned eccentric
characters like Hulk Hogan into household names. Although most people view professional wrestling as nothing more than a display of impressive stunts, Lancaster residents Jesus Rodriguez and Chris Dreisbach see the art form as a means to impact the community in a positive way. Rodriguez has been active in the world of wrestling for many years, serving as both a wrestler and an announcer for organizations such as WWE and

Steven and Allycia Barr of Leola have a dream. Someday, they would like to own a farm with the space and facilities to bring in families that are dealing with addiction and teach vocational skills. The dream was born of a hard reality. When the Barrs’ son, Steel, was born in Philadelphia in May of 2019, the couple was homeless and addicted, living in the back of a box truck in a friend’s driveway. The hospital where Steel was born gave Allycia the opportunity to go directly to
a rehab program following his birth. “When (Allycia) left the hospital and went right to rehab, I was left in the box truck,” recalled Steven. “(I wish) there had been somewhere we could have gone together,” said Allycia, who believes treatment as a family wo u l d h ave l e d to h e a l i n g together more quickly. Allycia is several years clean, and Steven graduated from Restart Training Center Ministry in Strasburg in August of 2021. They now live in Leola - working and raising their Allycia Barr (left) and her son together - but the dream is husband, Steven, cooking hot dogs and starting conversations in

Combate Global during his career. After his time in the ring, Rodriguez worked as a trainer in wrestling academies across the United States, and he has traveled to nearly every continent on the globe as an instructor. Rodriguez first visited Lancaster to receive treatment at Blueprints for Addiction Recovery, a local rehabilitation center owned by Dreisbach. Dreisbach had also previously worked with WWE to benefit addiction recovery programs, and he and Rodriguez connected over their shared love of wrestling. I n S e p te m b e r 2 0 2 2 , Rodriguez and Dreisbach founded Three Legacies Wrestling, a professional wrestling outfit located on South Centerville Road in Lancaster. In addition to training local wrestlers, Three Legacies Wrestling has reintroduced the sport to the Lancaster community by regularly hosting shows across the county. One of Three Legacies’ main goals is to change the public ’s perception of substance abuse disorders, and Rodriguez and Dreisbach regularly use the organization as a platform to raise money for recovery programs. “As we grow, we can also educate people on the recovery process and what it entails,” Rodriguez said. “We also have a couple students in recovery. (Wrestling) motivates them to stay clean and to push forward.” In addition to fighting the stigma that surrounds drug addiction, Three Legacies Wrestling has made an effort to reverse the public’s perception of professional wresting as a whole. “Wrestling has become an underground community because
of how it’s perceived,” said Rodriguez. “People come together every month for their love of wrestling, even if they come from different backgrounds and lifestyles.” Three Legacies also ensures that its shows are family-friendly to allow families to bring their children without worrying about crass performances. “It’s nice to see people who are skeptical when they come to a show, but by the end, the adults are usually cheering louder than the kids,” added Rodriguez. Three Legacies seeks to strengthen its bond with the community by frequently coordinating toy drives, food drives, and giveaways via partnerships with local businesses. The organization also offers discounted tickets for students in the Penn Manor School District and those who attend Millersville

the box truck. Steel was a miracle, according to Allycia, who did not think she would be able to have children. His arrival prompted Allycia to beat her addiction and return to her aunt and uncle’s home. Steven struggled for some time afterward, finally finding acceptance at Restart in February of 2021. Allycia, her aunt and uncle, and a church the couple attended in Dillsburg paid his tuition. “He hit his breaking point,” recalled Allycia. Steven said that he knew he was going to die if he did not go into a program. He and Allycia were married at Celebration Community Church in Dillsburg a month before he graduated with both Celebration’s pastor Mike Hammer and Jaime Santiago, director of Restart, officiating. Steven was invited to join the Restart staff after graduating, and the family moved to Leola in December of 2021. Both are currently trying to start their own businesses - Steven working with motorcycles and Allycia encouraging healthy eating. They have also made more than five

not far fromtheir minds. “Longterm we would like to have a property - (a place to address) emotional traumas that need to be healed,” Steven said, noting that often violence and trust issues accompany addiction. “People know the whole dynamic of their lives needs to change,” he said. The Barrs know the length of the road that needs to be traveled when families tackle mental health issues and trauma. Allycia traces her initial steps on that path to a Florida jail cell in the spring of 2016. “I met Jesus during that jail stay,” recalled Allycia, whose aunt and uncle in Mechanicsburg brought her to Pennsylvania to start over. She remained with them for eight months before moving to Tyrone. While living there, she met Steven online. When the pair was evicted from his apartment, they moved to his parents’ home in Narberth. Two months later, they were living on the streets with only backpacks of clothes and Steven’s motorcycle. “That was our life for two years,” said Allycia. After Steven’s motorcycle was stolen, they moved into

Restart from pg 3 trips to McPherson Square Park, often referred to as Needle Park because of the drug use that takes place there, in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. There they cook hot dogs and give out beverages and chips in hopes of starting conversations with the recipients. Steven is involved with
the Midnight Riders Ministry, a motorcycle outreach overseen by the Rev. Jerry Conley. Looking ahead, the pair sees the value of working with families rather than just individuals to facilitate healing. “Even if only one (parent) is a drug addict, the other doesn’t trust them. There are
likely codependency and boundary issues … and think of the trauma the children have been living. They all need a place to go to build trust and boundaries over again,” Allycia said. “When the families are on board, there’s a team of people asking (the addict) to do something different.”
Church sets Epiphany event Saint James Episcopal Church, 119 N. Duke St., Lancaster, offers a choral compline service to the community every First Friday. The next event will take place on Jan. 5. It will be a special Epiphany event featuring a dessert reception at 8 p.m.; a performance of brass, organ and percussion music at 8:30 p.m.; and the choral compline service from 9 to 9:30 p.m.
The c hurc h’s s er v i ces o f compline - meaning completion - are based on the closing time of prayer in the monastic day. The compline service is sung or spoken in monasteries around 9 p.m., when darkness has fallen and bedtime is near. The services at Saint James feature the Compline Choir under the direction of William Wright.
The brass ensemble to perform on Jan. 5 includes more than a dozen brass players from central Pennsylvania along with percussionists and an organist under the direction of Wright. Between brass pieces, parishioner Kim Lemon will share the biblical background of Epiphany. The event is free and open to the public.

Although bears consume more food and rest on cold days, they usually emerge from their dens if there is a spike in temperature. Female bears also remain awake to give birth to cubs and raise their young. Bats are one of L ancaster ’s t r u e h i b e r n a to r s , a n d they remain inactive until their favorite food sources return in the spring. Sanchez advises hikers to avoid caves during the winter, as disturbing bats in hibernation could force them to expend their limited supply of energy. The Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation offers a variety of winter programs that combine wildlife education with family activities. Sanchez and other park naturalists regularly hold fullmoon hikes and crafting activities at parks throughout the county, in addition to weekly programs for homeschooled students.
