Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church, 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, will host a free parenting workshop on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The event will include talks from author and parenting coach Amy McCready, light refreshments and free childcare from the church’s youth group.

McCready is the founder of Positive Parenting Solutions, a company that provides online education and parenting tools for parents with children of any age. Over 20 years ago, McCready began researching parenting studies from a variety of psychologists after encountering her own struggles with parenting two young boys. McCready applied her knowledge in education and training to create a curriculum for parents, which she taught in places such as churches, gyms, community centers, schools and businesses. In 2009, the curriculum was converted

into an online course on the Positive Parenting Solutions website.

“(McCready) has a wealth of knowledge that we are thankful to be able to tap into,” said church member Bobbie Dull. During the workshop, there will be a questionand-answer time when attendees can ask McCready specific questions relating to the discussion.

This is the first year that Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church will host a parenting workshop, which will serve as an extension of the parenting group started in October by Dull. The group meets on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 9:15 to 10:45 a.m. while children are in preschool, and while the group was initially directed toward parents of young children, parents with children of any age may attend. The goal of the group is to provide parents and caregivers with an outlet to connect to others in a similar season of life who are navigating the same challenges.

Parents and legal guardians in the group can discuss different parenting techniques and build relationships with other adults in the community.

“I was feeling led in this direction,” said Dull, who is the parent of an 18-year-old, a 7-year-old and a 4year-old. “It provides great perspective, and we can have discussions on a range of ages.” The group will meet until May and take a break once schools’ summer vacations arrive, but it will still meet once a month at a local playground so that group members and their children can stay connected.

Although the workshop and the child care provided will be free, Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church will accept donations to help fund its youth group’s upcoming mission trip to New Orleans. The deadline to register for the workshop is Wednesday, Jan. 18. To register, call 717-548-2763 or email office@chestnutlevel.org.

Jo Abrom has been teaching music for over 30 years. Abrom’s journey in the worlds of both music and music education has taken the Stroudsburg native across the country and to Lancaster County, where she’s spent the past 25 years teaching the community’s future Broadway stars and aspiring church choir singers alike.

Abrom joined the singing group

Re-Creation USA immediately after high school and performed across the United States for two years. Upon leaving Re-Creation, Abrom attended Susquehanna University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in music with a concentration in voice. After graduating from Susquehanna University, she attended Arizona State University and earned a master’s degree in vocal performance and pedagogy, the method and practice of teaching. Abrom began teaching in Arizona at the age of 22 while she earned her master’s degree.

Abrom briefly lived and taught in New Jersey before finally moving to Lancaster in 1998 when her husband was hired as Lafayette Elementary School’s principal. Since the beginning of her teaching career, Abrom has continued her own education via conferences and other methods of exploring the art of singing. “I’m always in learning mode and trying to find new techniques,” said Abrom. “I want to bring the most current methods to my students.”

Abrom currently teaches at Sight & Sound’s conservatory in Ronks in addition to teaching private lessons through Abrom Vocal Studio, located just off Harrisburg Pike in Hempfield School District, and she worked as the Fulton Theatre’s music director for five years. Abrom’s students range from preschoolers to senior citizens, and many of her students are performers in local productions at Sight & Sound, Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre and Fulton Theatre. Abrom also teaches actors in school plays, singers in local bands, students looking to study classical theater in college and those who simply wish to sing in their church

choir. “There’s a wealth of musical experiences for people to take part of in (Lancaster),” said Abrom. “It’s so exciting because everyone comes to lessons for a different reason.”

In 2020, Abrom wrote “College Audition Success! A Survival Guide For Musical Theatre and Voice Majors,” a book detailing key elements of the audition process and how to prepare for it. Abrom’s book is available for purchase on www.Amazon.com. “Every lesson is different and every voice is unique,” said Abrom. “I love taking a singer and helping them to grow and to be the best that they can be.”

Driven To Help

When Frank Gaston completed the Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM) program at the end of December 2020, he knew he needed to avoid going back to the life he had when he was addicted. “I started praying,” recalled Gaston, who was seeking God’s counsel on what to do next. The answer had four wheels. “I have always worked on cars. They are my hobby,” Gaston said.

Before completing the RTCM program, Gaston had worked in warehousing, but he also hustled cars. “I would buy a car from people if I knew they needed money,” said Gaston,

who soon realized what God was calling him to do. “(God) told me to (buy and sell cars) for good (purposes),” Gaston revealed.

The result is Slow Down Ministries - an organization that currently provides cars for graduates of Christ-centered programs like RTCM, Revelations of Freedom Ministries, The Potter’s House, and The Potter’s House of Ruth. Gaston, whose title is founder/director, explained that often individuals in recovery have a special need for low-cost transportation. “A lot of times, people in addiction have lost everything, so when they complete a program, they are starting fresh,” he noted. “(A graduate) may get a job, say, on a farm in Morgantown, but then there’s no way to get them there, and they feel defeated and they may relapse,” Gaston explained. Slow Down Ministries can fill the transportation gap by providing a car at a reasonable price.

Fire Hazards frompg 1

Of all the fire hazards that accompany the arrival of colder weather, space heaters are one of the most common fire starters and should be placed at a safe distance from any flammable items, such as beds, curtains and Christmas trees. Other methods of heating one’s home should also be utilized with care; when using a fireplace, only use natural wood. Plywood, treated wood and accelerants such as alcohol or gasoline should be kept out of the fireplace. In fact, putting anything other than the right wood into a fireplace could be dangerous.

Decorations such as stockings and Christmas trees should be kept away from the fireplace, and Christmas trees that are not regularly watered will become dry and turn into a hazard.

Stoves and ovens can also prove hazardous if left unattended. “The

biggest thing is making sure that you turn things off when you don’t need them,” said Rob “Stretch” Williams of New Providence, a member of the Refton Community Fire Company. “If something happens while you’re in bed, you won’t know until it’s too late. Most fires start between 12 and 4 a.m.”

A large factor in avoiding fires is preventative care. Local fire companies recommend that those with chimneys have them cleaned and inspected at least once a year. Uninspected chimneys may develop cracks that allow the fire to spread into other parts of the house through the walls. Furnaces should also be serviced regularly through a heating company to prevent malfunctions.

Another common fire hazard during the winter is overloaded circuits. Making sure that lights are turned off at night and that Christmas lights are not perpetually lit can make a residence much safer.

In addition to fire hazards, driving conditions play a large role in wintertime woes. Although modern cars are equipped with more safety measures than ever before, driving on icy or snow-laden roads can be dangerous if drivers do not exert caution. “We don’t get the crashes like we used to, but you still want to make sure you’re being careful when driving in the winter.” said Williams.

Whether you’re baking, enjoying holiday decorations, or driving to work this winter, keeping in mind some tips from your local firefighter can make your holiday season, and theirs, much safer.

Frank Gaston has founded Slow Down Ministries to help provide low-cost vehicles to those in recovery.

After going 4-2 through the first three weeks of December, the Pioneers kept sharp between the holidays, holding off Solanco 46-43 and then topping Exeter to claim the Solanco Holiday Tournament championship on December 29.

Against Solanco in the opener, the Pioneers fell behind 13-9 in the first quarter, overcame three ties in the second quarter and took and 24-21 lead on a putback by Katie Ranck, the tournament MVP, at the halftime buzzer.

In a nip-and-tuck third quarter, L-S led by as many as seven (31-24) on another bucket by Ranck but Solanco went on a 9-2 run and regained the lead on a triple by Emily Sims before Ava Vaughn’s trey with .4 left knotted the score once again, 37-37.

The fourth quarter was just as close with four lead changes and neither team leading by more than two. Vaughn canned her second trey of the game with 25 seconds remaining and Ranck tipped Solanco’s last attempt to preserve the threepoint win.

Ranck, hounded by Solanco’s Sarah Landis and despite foul trouble, tied for game-high honors with Solanco’s Kara Peace with 12 points each. Anna Horner (8), Ava Leonard (7),

Kelsey McTaggart (7), Leigha Sauerbaugh (6) and Vaughn (6) rounded out a balanced effort.

One night later the Pioneers used a 16-11 second quarter to pull out a 29-21 halftime lead over Exeter and won the second half 28-23 to claim the championship. They canned 15-of-20 free throws, including 8-of-10 in the second quarter, to help secure the win.

Ranck knocked down a team-high 16 points with Leonard (13) and Horner (11) also hitting double figures.

“Katie needed to work for every bucket she scored on both nights,” stated head coach Steven Villlbrandt. “Ava Vaughn shot well and hit some key 3s. McTaggart was asked to guard the best player in both games and did a great job. Ava Leonard crashes the boards hard, ran the game plan perfectly and was able to finish around the rim,” he continued.

“Leigha Sauerbaugh flies all over the floor and is often the glue that keeps us together, and Horner was great at penetrating and passing to shooters and locking up the shooting guards on defense. These were overall team wins and that’s what we were looking for.”

Back in Section Three play Tuesday, the second place Pioneers (6-3) hosted the undefeated Crusaders and fell short of the upset, 61-41.

While the final score was lopsided, the Pioneers did battle early on and outscored the visitors 14-6 over the final eight minutes. The middle frames, however, belonged to the Crusaders. Their press and fastbreaks resulted in a 39-17 advantage.

“I thought we played really well,” said Villbrandt. “Only having six girls created minutes of exhaustion that they capitalized on. Plus Kelsey had back spasms and sat the entire second half.”

Ranck’s 13 points were high for the home team. Horner added 11.

WRESTLING

The Pioneer grapplers entered the new year with an 0-3 record having suffered losses to Elizabethtown (5612), Ephrata (45-21), and Manheim Central (44-24) in December.

On January 4 they hosted Donegal. Each team forfeited three weight classes, leaving seven bouts to be wrestled. The Indians finished on top, 49-21.

L-S led 18-0 after Donegal forfeited the first three bouts. L-S forfeited at 127 and the Indians won the first bout actually wrestled, 133. A second L-S forfeit closed the lead to 18-16.

Donegal won each of the next three bouts with a pair of falls and a 5-4 thriller at 145. Jaiden Newton’s 5-1 decision at 172 closed the gap to 31-21 but two falls and a forfeit

went Donegal’s way and capped the scoring.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

After splitting games at the Red Tornado Holiday tournament, the Pioneers improved

to 3-0 in Section Three when they handed Lancaster Catholic a 64-55 home loss last Tuesday. Luke Hines poured in a career-high 24 points, Ben Wert added 18,

including 9-of-10 free throws, and Chase Smucker added 13 as the Pioneers built a 50-34 lead after three quarters. Hines was recently voted to the Class 4A Second Team PFN Coaches Select all state football team as defensive end.

“He had a monster game,” said head coach Ed Berryman. “In addition to a career high, he had seven rebounds, three steals and four assists. He did a bit of everything.

“It’s an accomplishment to win at Catholic,” he added. “It’s never easy there.”

The Crusaders hit four treys down the stretch to keep within striking distance but then had to resort to fouling. L-S canned 12-of-15 freebies in that final quarter to wrap up the road win.

Holding a 16-14 lead in the first quarter, L-S went on a 13-2 run in the second after switching to a halfcourt trapping defense. They finished the half on a 7-0 run and led 35-25 at the horn.

Hines, netting nine of Lampeter’s first 11 points of the third frame, pushed the lead to 46-34 with less than two minutes showing. A pair of Trent Wagner free throws and a Smucker jumper capped the quarter and left L-S with a 16 point advantage with eight minutes remaining.

“We were without Dean Herr so Trent got his first varsity start and was productive at both ends of the floor,” Berryman stated. “Tim

Holmes did a nice job as well. He does a lot of little things that don’t show up in the scorebook.”

The visitors drained an impressive 22-of-27 free throws for the game.

“I expected us to be competitive this year,” said Berryman, “but I don’t think I expected us to be 8-2 at this point. The kids are working hard and everyone’s doing what is best for the team.”

Between the holidays L-S competed in the Red Tornado Holiday tournament where they posted mixed results, dropping a 59-55 result against York High before rebounding with a 67-58 victory over Harrisburg on Dec. 29.

Tied at 18-18 in the first half and leading 32-30 after three quarters against York High, the Pioneers stumbled a bit down the stretch. They were outscored 29-23 over the final eight minutes and suffered the loss.

L-S canned 11 three-pointers on the night, five each by Wert (24 points) and Smucker (18 points) but only hit six two point shots and were 10-of-15 from the free throw line.

One night later they fought off a 16-9 first quarter deficit and outscored Harrisburg in each of the next three quarters, including a convincing 23-11 third quarter run that pushed their lead to 49-42. They took the fourth quarter 18-16 to seal Harrisburg’s fate.

To fulfill that mission, Gaston currently works with Andrew Lockman of Clearview Complete Auto Care in New Holland, who donates time and garage space to evaluate donated vehicles or ones Gaston has purchased. Cars that cannot be repaired are sold for scrap.

Gaston’s dream is to expand the ministry to provide cars for more community members in need. “Down the road, we would like to provide cars for others who can’t afford them,” he said. “That is something we are working on.”

What Gaston needs to make that dream happen is more community support. “I need (volunteer) time, money, parts, labor, whatever the community can give,” said Gaston. Slow Down Ministries is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a four-member board. Contributors will receive a tax

receipt for donations of funds or vehicles.

Gaston knows that growing the ministry will depend on God. Recently, he connected with Christian MissionaryTechnical Services of Reading, an organization which has provided vehicles to missionaries on furlough. The ministry has an abundance of cars to sell, and Gaston sees the opportunity to salvage some of those vehicles for his ministry.

“I want to do more,” said Gaston, who noted that the name Slow Down is the opposite of “hustle.”

“(The name) reminds me to stay focused,” he said.
