Tour guide training from pg 1 the Hans Herr House and Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster. This year, the sessions will take place on Saturdays, Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 24 and March 2. Each session will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., with the exception of Feb. 3, which will run longer. More details will be available closer to the date of the session.
During the courses, trainees will learn about the history of both Mennonite settlers and the Native Americans who preceded them. In addition to leading tours of the Hans Herr House, tour guides will be responsible for taking visitors through a replica of an indigenous longhouse. The replica is based on an archaeological discovery made in Washing-
ton Boro that is estimated to date back to the mid-1600s. Jess McPherson, a representative of local Native American advocacy group Circle Legacy Center, will give an educational presentation during the session on Feb. 3. “One of our main points of focus is working toward a world where people learn both their own stories and stories that reach across
boundaries,” said Heather Strahin, the 1719 Museum’s administrator. “Mennonite settlers and indigenous people both played an integral role in Lancaster’s history; it’s important to share their stories.” For more information and to sign up, visit http:// tinyurl.com/1719guides.

Ideas for healthy eating Diet and exercise are the key components of maintaining a healthy weight and protecting against chronic disease. According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, eating smart and being active have similar effects, including reducing risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, some cancers, and diabetes. In addition, these healthy living strategies can improve personal appearance and can improve overall well-being, helping people live longer and maintain their independence. People may wonder how to eat better when faced with many diets, each of which promises great results. Navigating the options can be confusing, and there is no mag ic formula to eating better. Common sense can come into play when attempting to eat better, and individuals also can consider the following strategies to make a diet work for them as they
seek to live healthier. - Eat colorful, varied, nutritionally dense foods. Medical News Today says each meal should be 50% fruit and vegetables, 25% whole grains, and 25% protein. Select an array of colorful foods that will provide most of the nutrients needed. - Choose fiber-rich foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes are good sources of fiber. Fiber helps people maintain digestive health and can help a person to feel fuller longer, reducing the potential for overeating, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. - Note how you feel after eating. Create a food journal where you jot down notes about how you feel after eating certain foods. If you notice that certain foods or ingredients trigger adverse reactions, it may be worth avoiding that type of food or looking for an alternative. Stomach upset or
bloating after eating dairy, for example, may indicate an intolerance for lactose. - Explore the Mediterranean diet. While it’s wise to avoid fad diets that often produce short-term but unsustainable results, the Mediterranean diet has stood the test of time. According to the authors of a study published in JA M A Ne t work O p en in October 2023, middle-aged and older adults who were overweight or obese and had metabolic syndrome lost visceral fat (belly fat) and showed a greater reduction in the percentage of total fat while adhering to a Mediterranean diet. They also had delayed loss of lean body mass, which often comes with aging. Mediterranean diets prioritize legumes, seafood, vegetables, and healthful fats like olive oil. - Control portion sizes. Sometimes it’s not what a person eats but how much he or she eats that
Fill up on healthy foods Hunger is one of the m o re co m m o n i s s u e s individuals encounter when transitioning to a nutritious diet. Many people aspire to eat healthier in an effort to lose weight gained due to overeating. That can make the adjustment more difficult, as individuals are accustomed to eating to a point of fullness. However, there’s good news for
people in that situation, as a variety of healthy foods can provide a feeling of fullness and put an end to between-meal hunger pangs. - Water: Water may not be a food, but drinking more of it can provide a feeling of fullness that people are accustomed to. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics notes that symptoms of mild
dehydration often present as feelings of hunger. In addition, the PKD Foundation reports that clinical studies have found that 37% of people mistake thirst for hunger because signals that indicate thirst are weak. Dry eyes, feeling sluggish, increased heart rate, and headache are some potential warning signs of thirst. So when mid-afternoon hunger

affects health. Weighing and measuring food can help a p ers on control portions and understand how many calories he or she is consuming each day. The National Institutes of Health says eating plans that favor 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day for women and 1,500 to 1,800 for men are good targets to lose weight at a healthy pace when combined with moderate exercise. - Focus on adding healthy foods to your diet rather than on trying to avoid detrimental foods. The greater quantity of healthy foods are eaten, the more unhealthy ones will fall by the wayside. Focusing on the positive can help people feel less restricted by healthy eating plans. Balanced eating is a major component of a healthy lifestyle. While there are many fad diets, eating plans with a proven track record that are supported by the medical community may be the best bet.
pangs hit, try drinking some water before reaching for a snack. - Vegetables: One of the misconceptions concerning food and fullness is that low-calorie foods are unlikely to be filling. That is not true, and vegetables are a testament to how filling certain low-calorie foods can be. According to the Mayo Clinic, most vegetables are low in calories but high in volume or weight. That means they can contribute to feelings of fullness without compromising individuals’ efforts to eat healthy. - Baked potatoes: Nearly 30 years ago, researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia developed a satiety index in an effort to measure how effective cer tain foods were at helping people feel full. No food finished with a higher satiety ranking than baked potatoes. T hat’s good See Healthy foods pg 5

Strategies to protect long-term mental health Mental health has always been important, but the need for people to prioritize their emotional, psychological and social well-being gained greater attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pandemic-related restrictions have long since been lifted throughout much of the world, but the need to prioritize mental health remains. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) notes that self-care can play a vital role in maintaining mental health. With that in mind, individuals may try the following strategies as they look to safeguard their mental health over the long haul. - Exercise regularly. Exercise benefits the body in myriad ways, and those benefits extend to mental health. The NIMH reports that a 30-minute daily walk can boost mood. In addition, the United Kingdom-based Mental Health Foundation reports that regular physical activity positively affects self-esteem and can lead to a reduction in stress and anxiety. That’s important to note, as the online medical resource Healthline reports that chronic anxiety can adversely affect the body’s nervous, cardiovascular, digestive, immune, and respiratory systems. - Maintain social connections. T he NIMH also touts the benefits of maintaining social connections, including relying on friends and family for emotional support and practical help. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that people who are socially connected and maintain stable and supportive relationships are more likely to have better mental health outcomes than those who
don’t. - Eat a nutritious, balanced diet. The American Society for Nutrition (ASN) notes that diet can be an important ally for people looking to improve and preser ve their mental health. Numerous studies have examined the relationship between diet and mental health, and the A SN notes a growing body of research suggests a strong connection between a healthy diet and mental health. A 2019 review published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that increased consumption of fruits and vegetables positively affects psychological health. That same review also indicated that daily vegetable consumption provides a therapeutic effect that can help to reduce symptoms among people with clinical depression. - Resolve to read more. Much like exercise, reading has been linked to a host of positive health outcomes, including mental health benefits. A 2009 study from researchers at the University of Sussex found that reading can reduce stress by as much as 68%. Escapism is another potentially potent benefit of reading, as a recent report in Psychology Today noted that researchers believe narrative absor ption, which refers to the experience of being immersed or engaged while reading a story, provides an escape or opportunity for mental reflection. Self-care can go a long way toward promoting long-term mental health. Various strategies and activities fall under the umbrella of self-care, and each can have a profound and lasting effect on mental health.

Levi Fisher Diana Roth (front and center in left photo) and Kyle Martin (right in right photo) are Fellowship of Christian Athletes character coaches who work with local school sports teams to help foster a positive environment and provide support to coaches.
Pequea Valley baseball team was to oversee six students who needed to complete schoolwork to be academically eligible to play. “We would have had to forfeit three games the following week because we would not have had enough players (if the work was not completed),” Burns explained. Martin noted that his experience has included working through emotions with a student who was benched by a coach due to a class disruption. He has also worked on character development with team leaders. “The way you react to things
on the field can change anyone’s perspective,” he said, noting that in one game an opposing team player made an inappropriate gesture as he crossed home plate. “How do we respond to that as a team?” he asked. “We don’t want to emotionally react. We want to take a deep breath and respond.” Swarr said that the FC A volunteer process includes an application and a 30-minute training video. “It’s an introduction to FCA’s discipleship strategy,” he said. “Ideally, (volunteers) meet regularly with the local staff people
for resources and advice.” Burns added that character coaches are asked to be at each home game and to try to be at practice once or twice a week for 30 minutes as their schedule allows. FC A has chapters in nearly ever y L ancaster County school district, and the organization is eager to meet individuals who would like to serve as character coaches and team coaches who are open to taking part in the program. The first year of serving usually involves building relationships, followed by working to develop leadership skills. “If the door opens to spiritual conversation, that’s awesome, but the sole purpose is to serve,” added Burns. Burns also noted that character coaching may look different depending on the specific sport and the players. He pointed out that Diana Roth, who is the FCA representative for ELANCO and Cocalico school districts and Lancaster Mennonite High School, is also a character coach for the Garden Spot girls’ soccer team. “It’s a team of girls with an all-male coaching staff,” explained Burns. “(Her role) opens doors for girls when they’re going through stuff. She is there to be on the bench and develop relationships.” Burns recalled that one of his first experiences as a character coach for the

Mason-Dixon Ramble from pg 1 the tracks of the old rail line. Once the train crosses the border into Maryland, travelers will ride on the Walkersville Southern Railroad as it passes through farmlands and active locomotive yards. The train conductor will provide insight on the history of the areas along the route by offering historical details as the trip progresses. The ticket for the MasonDixon Ramble will include round-trip transportation via chartered motorcoach from Lancaster or Harrisburg. Each ticket will also entitle a traveler to lunch and dinner during the train’s scheduled stops in
New Freedom and Glen Rock, respectively. This is the third MasonDixon Ramble that the R ailroad Museum has offered over the last 25 years, although the event and its itinerar y var y slightly each time. Unlike many of the museum’s other programs and offerings, the Ramble is a long-distance traveling experience that takes passengers out of the county. The stops along the train’s route are always selected to highlight destinations that are of historical, cultural or scenic interest to the railroading community.
“R amblers will enjoy train rides on the two participating tourist railroads as well as dinner at the Glen Rock Mill Inn and the companionship o f f e l l o w R a m b l e r s ,” said Deborah Reddig , the Railroad Museum’s advancement director. “The Friends strives to highlight railroading in all of its forms, historic and contemporary, for the benefit and enjoyment of the Ramblers.” A brochure with additional details and a sign-up form may be downloaded from www .rrmuseumpa.org/event/ mason-dixon-ramble.
