Remembering Everyone’s Favorite Bus Driver

This past December, Jeff Landis of Lancaster passed away at the age of 56 after battling esophageal cancer. Landis lived an extraordinary life, and although he traveled across the United States and around the world, he never forgot about those in his local community.

Landis was Lampeter-Strasburg School District’s transportation coordinator for 27 years, starting out as a bus driver when he was 18 years old. Even after moving to a management position, Landis kept his bus driver’s license and drove bus No. 300 as a way to stay connected with the kids in the district.

In addition to his daily route,

Landis was always eager to shuttle teams of every sport to and from their games and trips. Landis would even keep score and manage the clock for games that he drove the teams to. “He was always looking to help out. He drove for everyone at some point,” said Kim Kann, Landis’ wife.

Landis’ contributions to the school district didn’t end with transportation; he also served as an adviser for multiple school clubs, such as the ski and snowboard club and the outdoor and environmental club. Landis was also an adviser for the Interact Club, a faith-based student organization that provides services to communities both locally and abroad. Landis took a group of students to Louisiana to help

rebuild communities that had been affected by flooding and assisted with trips to New York to provide help in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Every three years, Landis went with a group of students to the Dominican Republic to provide English language instruction. Through the Interact Club, Landis and many students also regularly visited local nursing homes and volunteered at nonprofit organizations.

In addition to service trips, Landis would take groups of students on educational escapades to Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware every year, where they would camp for a few days. “He was very devoted to exposing kids to beautiful places and hoping that they would understand why it was important to

preserve these places,” said Kann.

Landis retired in June 2021 after Kann was diagnosed with leukemia so that he could help with her recovery. After Kann was healthy enough to travel, she and Landis packed their RV and spent eight months traveling across the country. Landis and Kann camped in Glacier National Park in Montana and rode on horseback in Wyoming. Their adventure took them up and down the West Coast.

Landis requested that his memorial service be less of a funeral and more of a celebration of life. The theme of the memorial was “Live Your Dash,” referring to the dash between the first year and last year of one’s life. “Jeff exemplified putting as much into that dash as you could,” said Kann.

The colder months and their inclement weather can be dangerous for any Lancaster County resident, and navigating snowy and icy conditions without the proper caution may result in injury or worse. During this season, seniors in the community may be more at risk than other people; here are some tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe.

Avoid going outside until snow and ice are removed from walkways and parking lots, especially after it gets dark. Once the sun sets, even if a path has been cleared, refreezing is more likely to occur. If you do need to leave the house, making sure that you have a pair of shoes with nonskid soles greatly decreases your chance of slipping on ice or wet pavement. Any footwear that provides significant traction will make a winter stroll much safer.

Whether recounting stories of catching black mambas by hand or surviving a shipwreck off the Alaskan coast, outdoorsman, author, and Christian musician Brent Henderson has one goal for his audiences. “They are listening to more than great outdoor stories,” said Henderson. “(Because) there’s a relationship (they) can have with the One who made it all.”

Henderson will share his stories with attendees of the Restart Training Center Ministry’s (RTCM) eighth annual sportsman dinner on Tuesday, March 21, and Wednesday, March 22, at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the meal will be served at 5:30 p.m. RTCM is an organization that strives to help men who have developed addictions as a means of coping with difficulties.

Originally from Bethlehem, Pa., Henderson worked in a steel mill following high school leaving town to attend college in 1981, but instead venturing into Christian contemporary music. “I met a guy named Steven Curtis Chapman, and he and I traveled for a while,” recalled Henderson, who later played with artists Sandi Patty and Crystal Lewis and the group Avalon. In 2002, he became the worship leader and ministry pastor with an organization in Meadville. “God moved me into speaking full time to

men,” said Henderson, who credited God with mixing his passion for men’s ministry with his love for the outdoors in his talks. “It was the perfect fit.” In that capacity, he likes to bring audience members to the edges of their seats. “I have hunted everywhere from Africa to Alaska,” noted Henderson. “I’ve had a lot of crazy experiences.” Among those are a brown bear attack and being stranded in the mountains when the flight back was delayed by bad weather. “(The stories) always lead back to God’s faithfulness and care,” shared Henderson. Henderson is the author of “Into the Wilds” and “The Roar Within.”

Jaime Santiago, founder and executive director of RTCM, said that Henderson was recommended by Don Higgins, who spoke at a previous sports banquet. In addition to hearing Henderson’s talk, attendees may bid on items in a live auction or purchase tickets for giveaways. Live auction items will include a cabin getaway, a 6-by-6-foot octagon ground blind, a Puerto Rican meal for up to 10 people, a deep-sea fishing trip, and tickets to a men’s retreat being presented by Henderson. Ticket auction items include an in-line muzzleloader, a Ravin R26X crossbow, and a Weber grill. Grand prizes will be a Mathews bow and a Wicked Ridge Raider 400 De-Cock.

Currently, RTCM is mounting a capital campaign with the goal of purchasing the former Strasburg Elementary

Wert Nets 21 Points in Section 3 Loss to Octorara

An impressive string of victories came to a close Tuesday, Jan 10 when host Octorara toppled Lampeter-Strasburg 56-45 in a Section Three victory. The loss was Lampeter’s first in league play, ending a 17-game regular season win streak that started back in 2021.

L-S led just twice in the first half and fell behind 28-21 at the half. The second half was a bit closer, but the Braves prevailed, 28-24. Ben Wert paced the offense with 21 points, including 7-of-8 free throws. Luke Hines added 11 points.

The Pioneers were coming off a 66-61 double overtime thriller over Red Lion as part of the War of the Roses Tournament Saturday, Jan. 7. Wert poured in 26 points and Smucker added 23 and both went 8-for-8 at the free throw line to lift L-S to victory.

Despite the close finish, L-S actually held a 29-19 lead at the half but then managed just six points in the third quarter. Down four late in the game, L-S created a couple of turnovers and converted at the other end to close the gap. Wert’s layup, prior to Red Lion missing two free

throws with .4 left, tied the game at 49.

Smucker scored six points in the first OT, including a pair of free throws with 6.4 remaining to tie the score again.

“We got a little but lucky,” said Berryman. “They missed those free throws at the end of regulation and just after the first OT buzzer sounded they drained a three. Luckily that was waved off.”

Up five with 42 seconds left in the second OT, Red Lion knocks down a three to cut it to two before Smucker sinks a pair of freebies with 18.5 left and Hines (4 points, 5 rebounds) adds another to close out the win.

“We’re finding ways to win,” said Berryman. “Hitting 22-of-26 free throws was the difference.”

Yasin Abdi (7 points, 4 rebounds), Trent Wagner (6 points) and Tim Holmes (3 rebounds) also contributed.

WRESTLING

The Pioneers competed in the Hawk Mountain Duals at Hamburg Saturday, Jan. 7 and came out on the short end twice. L-S fell 67-6 against Faith Christian Academy and 53-15 against Conestoga Valley.

Josh Heisey earned an 8-3

decision at 145, and both Trey Spahr (285) and Riley Bonholtzer (121) added a pair of falls to account for the scoring against the Buckskins.

In league action Wednesday, Jan. 11, the Pioneers gave up six falls and a pair of forfeits in a 51-21 loss at Cocalico. Down 27-0 Justice Lugo’s 3:17 fall at 160 put LS on the scoreboard. Spahr picked up a 2:26 fall at 285 before Dillon Jannone was awarded a forfeit.

BOWLING

With a team-high 564 series from Peter Mecouch and a strong 559 from Ethan Snyder, who rolled the best single game at 204, the Pioneer bowlers overcame Morgan Kline’s game-best 695 and blanked visiting Elco 7-0 last Monday, Jan. 9.

“We rolled a 959 in the first game which is our highest to date,” said head coach John Achille. “We have more depth this year. Probably four different players have already rolled team highs.”

Katie Pope chipped in with a 527, Maddux Harsh added a 509 and Nick Bukowski rounded out the top five with a 497.

Elco marks the end of the first half of the season. The Pioneers sit on top of the standings at 35-7. Central is two points back (33-9).

376 points to wrap up the shutout.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

The girls’ basketball team slipped to 6-5 overall with a pair of tough non-league losses over the last week.

Thursday, Jan. 5 the Pioneers got off to a slow start and never recovered in a 6351 loss at Northeastern York. Two days later, they were outpointed 44-40 against York Suburban.

“We lost Leigha Saurbaugh in the first quarter with a back injury at Northeastern and had to shift our game plan,” said head coach Steve Villbrandt. “Once we figured it out at halftime (35-21) it was too late and the lead was too great. We also have two JV players injured, so our numbers were limited and some of the girls coming off the bench already played a full JV game.”

With field goals and three pointers yielding just a twopoint difference, the hosts pulled away with an 18-for-30 effort at the free throw line. The Pioneers were 8-for-19.

The hosts placed four players in double figures. Katie Ranck dropped a season-high 23 points. Anna Horner added 9.

Lampeter-Strasburg’s

Wednesday, Snyder’s 586 series led a sweep over Cocalico. Bukowski (549) and Pope (517) each rolled three games while Harsh, Mecouch and Tino Allegretti contributed to the Pioneers 2665 pin total, surpassing Cocalico’s total by

“She’s amazing,” said Villbrandt of Ranck. “Any time she touched the ball they swarmed her with two defenders and she still scored at will. She also led with 11 rebounds.”

Saturday’s loss was even tougher as each quarter was determined by just a point or two.

Luke Hines maneuvers against the Braves’ Jackson Leaman during Lampeter-Strasburg’s 56-45, Section Three loss at Octorara on January 10.

“We battled the entire game, but it came down to experience,” Villbrandt stated. “We panicked at the end of the game and gave up the lead with less than a minute left. Ava Leonard really worked hard rebounding and Anna had to handle the press most of the game by herself because Leigha was still banged up.

“On the bright side, Molly Gochnauer has started to find her place in the lineup,” he continued. “She usually plays a full JV game and has really provided a spark off the bench. She does not pad the stat sheet. She does the dirty work and rebounds very well.”

Ranck netted 16 points, including a 10-for-12 effort at the foul line. Leonard added 10, Horner finished with 9 and Ava Vaughn and Kelsey McTaggart combined for five.

SWIMMING

With the holidays causing a 28-day layoff since their last meet, the Pioneer swimmers hit the water last Monday and swept the visiting Crusaders. The girls’ cruised to a 128-37 victory while the boys’ won 89-57 against the short-handed Crusaders.

L-S dominated, winning 10 of 11 events.

Zara Paisley (100 free and 50 free) and freshman Madelyn Juba (500 free and 200 IM) earned a pair of firsts and contributed to the relay sweep. Paisley team with Kylie Gerhardt, Ashley Prouse and Claire Ecker in the 200 medley with and with Prouse, Krista Lambert and Juba in the 400 free relay. Juba also anchored the winning 200 free with Addie Rodriguez, Gerhardt, and Eckert chipping in.

Other winners included Prouse in the 100 fly, Gerhardt in the 100 back and Jocelyn Wolff in the 100 breaststroke.

Matt Rota (breaststroke and butterfly), Ryan Smecker (backstroke and freestyle) and Kyle Spaulding (500 free and 200 IM) each won two events to lead the way. Christian Rota added a 100 free win.

The Pioneers also won two of the three relays. Christian and Matt Rota, Spaulding and Smecker claimed not only the 200 free but the 400 free as well.

Wednesday L-S posted mixed results against visiting Conestoga Valley. The girls moved to 3-1 overall with a lopsided 110-43 while the boys fell to 2-2 with a 96-64 loss.

The girls won all but two events with Gerhardt taking the 200 and 500 free events and swam in two of the three winning relays. Juba swam on two relays and won the 100 back while Prouse anchored the 400 free relay and won the 200 IM.

Eckert wrapped up the individual wins with the top time in the 100 free. Wolff anchored the 200 medley and 200 free relays with Liliana Bacon swimming legs on both the 200 free and 400 free relays. Rodriguez and Rachael Mann also were relay contributors.

The boys won five of the eight individual events but the Bucks swept the relays to pull away. Smecker doubled with wins in the 100 free and 200 IM. Spaulding won the 500 free, M. Rota took the 100 fly and C. Rota was tops in the 50 free.

Participants at Challenger Clubs - monthly Bible studies for individuals age 15 and up with physical or intellectual disabilities – do not always express their enjoyment of the experience verbally. “A grandmother told me recently that her grandson, who (shows little emotion) around his family, is so excited to attend,” said Meghan Martin, disability ministries assistant, Handi-Vangelism Ministries International (HVMI), which oversees the clubs. “There are so many smiles.”

HVMI has run Challenger

Clubs at several Ephrata-area churches, including New Joy and Highpoint, along with the HVMI offices at 300 W. Chestnut St., Ephrata, and private residences, for several years. Now, the organization has expanded to the area south of Route 30 with a new club, which began serving residents of the greater Paradise area in October 2022. The Challenger Club at Calvary Monument Bible Church, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The club will continue to meet through April.

Martin said each club meeting begins with worship, followed by a Bible lesson and often a skit to enhance understanding of the lesson, and a memory verse. During small group time, participants work on a booklet, which can be taken home at the end of the year, focused on life applica-

tion of the lesson. Martin shared that the lessons are structured to be more palatable to participants. “We write our own curriculum, and we are able to write in a way that we know has been successful in the past,” she said. “Parents can see the growth in their kids when they see them understanding and answering questions. It’s a different aspect that parents don’t always see.” Martin noted that parents may drop their children at the club or they are welcome to stay. “The respite piece is something we like to offer,” she pointed out.

According to Martin, volunteers are needed to work with HVMI staff aiding participants at each meeting. “(Volunteers) may help with small group time or take part in the skit,” she said.

The Bible clubs are an extension of HVMI’s summer

program, which provides uniquely designed camping experiences for individuals with disabilities. “A lot of places provide fun activities for adults with disabilities, but our goal is to focus on a Bible lesson,” explained Martin, who added that many participants enjoy the club so much they cannot wait to return.

“We have a girl who just moved (to the Paradise area) with her family, and she has come to every meeting,” said Martin. “She was walking out the door after the last meeting, and she said to her mother, ‘What’s the date for the next one so I can put it on my calendar?’” reported Martin.

Readers who would like to learn more about HVMI may visit www.hvmi.org. Individuals who want to know more about volunteering or participation in a club may call 717-859-4777 or email mmartin@hvmi.org.

County residents may dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Trees may be dropped off between dawn and dusk through Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be

accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a limit of three trees per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations.

There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the Lancaster County Park System. A portion of the funds are used to purchase emerald ash borer protection for about 26 ash trees in Lancaster County Central Park and Buchmiller County Park.

According to park officials,

residents drop off about 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a firstcome, first-served basis after Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home.

For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, visit www.lancastercountyparks.org.

Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote longterm health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese.

Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results, and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.

DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing protein, so a high-protein diet can help to shed up to 80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.

DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% of your total body weight can produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start

small and gradually build up.

DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.

DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.

DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise boosts metabolism, benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.

DON’T go shopping while hungry. If you do, you may

make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.

DO speak with a doctor if you are comparing diet and exercise plans. A health care professional can indicate if a particular diet or fitness routine is acceptable for your age, goals and current health status.

DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets

involve some sort of caloriecounting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing or tracking the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.

DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which can derail weight loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods. Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some time-tested techniques.

America250PA recently announced Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) as the winner of its fourth annual 2022 Direct Effect Innova tion Challenge (DEIC). The PCA&D team competed against four other postsecondary institutions - Lebanon Valley College, Point Park University, Rosemont College and Ursinus College - and received the highest score from a judging panel of industry professionals.

The DEIC is a multi-round competition that challenges students from postsecondary institutions across the commonwealth to design and develop integrated marketing campaigns that explore solu-

Senior Safety

If you use a cane, ensure that it is equipped with a rubber tip that has been recently replaced and that has not been worn smooth. Even if a walkway is cleared, remain wary of rock salt that may have been applied to the ground; it could result in a loss of traction for those who use a walker as the wheels are more likely to skid on the substance.

“Slipping and falling on ice hazards is one of the biggest issues during the wintertime,” said Bobbi-Jo Casseday, vice president of environmental services at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. in Columbia. “(St. Anne’s) makes sure we keep our walkways clear and that residents watch

out for re-freezing and ice patches.”

Another important practice during the winter months is to ensure you are stocked with the necessary supplies in case you are unable to leave your home. A winter storm may also prevent meals and prescriptions from being delivered. Keep your kitchen stocked with enough food and water to last for at least one week and make sure you have nonperishable food that does not require cooking or refrigeration in the event that you lose power. Keeping your medicine cabinet full of needed prescriptions prior to a storm is also good practice; try to have prescriptions filled ahead of

time if your area is expecting harsh weather.

Those who drive should stock their cars with basic emergency supplies for the winter. In case of emergency, a car should have a first aid kit, blankets, warm winter clothing, a windshield scraper, a shovel and a flashlight.

Don’t forget to check on your neighbors, relatives and friends. Aside from the physical dangers of the winter, inclement weather and limited travel can mean many seniors don’t receive as many visitors as usual. Practicing safety measures and checking in on others in the community can make this time of year safer for everyone.

Using a targeted regional commitment to address food insecurity, the High Foundation has awarded Power Packs Project a grant in the amount of $55,000 for the purchase of a 20-foot box truck. Power Packs will now be able to transport more than five times more fresh produce and other nonperishable food to families in need in the community.

Power Packs executive director Brad Peterson explained that the new truck has the capacity to move up to five tons of food. In the past, he noted, Power Packs would need to make multiple trips to pick up or deliver food and sometimes had to turn down donations because of the lack of transportation. He added that the truck will go a long way to increase access to fresh, nutritious food for families in Power Packs’ 90 partner

schools in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

The truck will be operational immediately and will be used in deliveries to Power Packs affiliates and partner schools as well as pickups from food donors and produce farmers. Last year, Power Packs provided nearly 400,000 healthy meals to families struggling with hunger. More information about the organization is available at www .powerpacksproject.org.

The High Foundation’s mission is to improve the lives of people who live and work in Lancaster city, Lancaster County and other communities in which the High Companies provide economic investment and employment. In 2021, the High Foundation invested more than $3 million in local communities. For additional information, visit www.highfoundation.org.

Seventh-grader Ben Rimert won the 2022 Martin Meylin Spelling Bee on Dec. 6. Cole Schneider, grade seven; Harry Skiles, grade eight; and Sophia Coon, grade six, took second, third, and fourth places, respectively. The top four qualified to participate in the online WITF Written Spelling Bee, with the top scorers moving on to the WITF Grand Championship Spelling

competition will represent central Pennsylvania in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

This year’s spelling bee was the first open to the public since the 2019-20 school year. Twenty-five of the school’s top spellers participated, and the bee lasted for five rounds. Four students competed in a spell-off for fifth place/alternate, which was won by Ben’s sixth-grade brother, Andrew Rimert.
