Mitzvah Kids Complete First Project

Look Inside

Restart Sportsman Banquets Will Feature Justin Gibbons BY ANN MEAD ASH

Sixteen children, including Abby Calderwood, participated in the first Mitzvah Kids project.

Josiah Krouse (left) collected socks with his pappy Carl Boyle.

n September of 2021, Mitzvah Moms founders Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg announced that there would be a Mitzvah Kids program for children age 5 and above. By completing good deeds, Mitzvah Moms members strive to set an example for their children. They aim to teach their children how to show kindness and look for ways to love their neighbors. The first Mitzvah Kids project that launched the new program was a sock drive, and it was led by 6-year-old Josiah Krouse. After participating in a winter clothing drive for the homeless community in the early months of COVID-19, Josiah knew the project he wanted to lead as a Mitzvah Kid

would help homeless children. Josiah partnered with PJ Library of Lancaster representative Lauren Gerofsky to provide new socks to students in transitional living in the School District of Lancaster. After realizing that he could only get 30 pairs of socks for $30, Josiah decided to use that money to purchase donation bags for recipients to fill with socks. Josiah and 15 other Mitzvah Kids visited various neighborhoods in Lancaster County and collected 1,348 pairs of socks. “The concept is repetition,” explained Gina. “If you show them how to organize fundraisers to help others, they know how to do it as they get older and know the power that not just one person has but a whole collection of people has.” Gina noted that the goal is for each

Mitzvah Kid to plan a project that interests him or her, and the rest of the members will assist with the project. For 2022, Mitzvah Kids members Elaine and Fiona intend to partner to lead a baked goods and popsicle stand to collect monetary donations for the Mitzvah Moms care packages. This project is slated for May. Ryder Harting, age 8, intends to lead an Earth Day cleanup event in April. Tate, age 10, plans to lead a service project that will benefit the autistic community, and Zoe, age 8, hopes to oversee a service project that will impact the refugee community. “I am so proud of Josiah and how this project has helped build his compassion for people in the community,” stated Gina. “He is so social. He’s a social butterfly. It was very exciting to see him use his natu-

ral skills in a positive way to impact our community at the age of 6.” Registration for the Mitzvah Kids program is currently open. The registration fee goes toward pins for each project a Mitzvah Kid participates in, a wall hanging for the pins, and supplies for projects. Although the program is intended for children age 5 and older, younger kids can sign up, but a parent will be more involved. Following CDC guidelines, monthly gatherings will take place at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg. The day and time of the meetings is to be determined. When Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), looks for speakers for his annual sportsman banquets, he often turns to attendees. “(Justin Gibbons) was referred by banquet attendee Ken Weaver,” said Santiago, who reported that Gibbons is a devoted Christian with a ministry to hunters called Limitless Outdoors. “(Gibbons’) goal is to enjoy God’s creation while introducing people to the Creator of the outdoors,” added Santiago. Gibbons will speak at the seventh RTCM sportsman banquets at the Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, on Tuesday, March 22, and Wednesday, March 23. Each night, doors will open at 5 p.m., and the meal will be served at 5:30 p.m.

Servant Stage Company’s Youth Theatre will produce Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzerprize winning play “Our Town” at the Magic & Wonder Theater, 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise. Shows will take place on Fridays, Jan. 28 and Feb. 4, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, Jan. 29 and Feb. 5, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays, Jan. 30 and Feb. 6, at 2 p.m. Set in the fictional town of Grover’s Corners, N.H., at the turn of the 20th century, this three-act play explores themes of love, legacy, and the simple joys of life. The Youth Theatre production features a cast of 20 teen performers. “Our Town” is one of two winter youth productions happening in January and February, along with “Matilda Jr.,” an adaptation of the Broadway musical based on Roald Dahl’s

classic story. This is the first time that Servant Stage has featured two concurrent winter youth productions, and “Our Town” marks the first straight play to be performed as part of Servant Stage’s Youth Theatre program. All performances are available by donation as part of Servant Stage’s mission to make performances accessible to everyone in the community. Reservations are required, as shows frequently do sell out. To obtain tickets or see the full list of performances and venues, visit www.ServantStage.org or call Josiah Evans (left), Seth Snyder (center) and Evelina 717-455-0255. Servant Stage Company is a Pristatsky rehearse for “Our Town.” nonprofit theater serving Lancaster County since 2011 and bringing entertainment to over 50,000 audience members each year.

Lady Pioneers Top Cocalico Swimmers 111-59

BY MONA STEINHAUER

The Lady Pioneer swimmers posted their first win of the season with last Tuesday’s 111-59 win at Cocalico (2-2). The visitors won all but two events to cruise to the victory. “This meet we focused on returning to competition after overcoming some obstacles,” said head coach Kylie Turner. “We want each member of the team to swim like it’s their last race, and to look to improve each of their times in each of their events. We had multiple best times but two individuals, Zara Paisley and Christian Rota, stood out,” the coach continued. “Zara was pushed by a talented Cocalico swimmer to break her previous 1:18 in the 100 breaststroke. She broke that mark with a 1:16.53 and finished second. “Christian dropped time in both the 100 backstroke, where he finished second, and in the 100 fly, finishing third. His hard work in practice is showing.” Paisley also anchored the winning 200 free (Abby Welchans, Kara Scranton and Ashley Prouse) and the 200 medley (Kylie Gerhardt, Scranton and Prouse). Scranton went on to win the 100 fly (1:07.17) and the 200 IM (2:28.54) while Welchans earned a first in the 200 free (2:17.07). Gerhardt added a victory in the 100 back (1:10.09) and Krista Lambert led a 1-2-3 finish in the 500 free with Grace Schonour and Liliana Bacon grabbing second and third. Andrew Reidenbaugh was the top point-getter for the boys who bowed out 100-59. The senior sprinted to victory in the 50 free (24.35) and the 100 free (53.68).

L-S, small in numbers this season, also claimed the 400 free relay with Ryan Smecker, Rota, Kyle Spaulding and Mitchell Livengood teaming for a 3:49.27. Smecker was also solid individually, earning seconds in the 200 free and the 100 fly.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL In back-to-back contests last week, the Lady Pioneers posted mixed results, opening the week with a 55-40 non-league loss at Spring Grove but bouncing back with a lopsided 44-27 romp over Northern Lebanon. L-S set the tone early against the Vikings, sprinting to a 14-3 first quarter advantage. They held the visitors to single digits in three quarters, maintaining the lead throughout and pushing their league record to 3-2. Jenna Daveler’s 15-point night featured a pair of triples and a couple of steals that led to fastbreak layups. Kiersten Hostetter just missed double figures, settling for nine points while Katie Ranck (6), Ella Horst (6), Maggie Visniski (5) and Kelsey McTaggart (3) added to the balanced attack. “We’re still missing too many layups,” said head coach Tony Fink. “Our defensive activity created turnovers and run outs. “We’ve been up and down this season,” he continued. “Hopefully, we can be more consistent going forward.” The Pioneers were coming off a 15-point loss to Spring Grove Monday night. The Rockets used an 18-8 run through the second quarter to extend a 15-12 first quarter lead, sparking the 55-40 home win. Daveler’s 14 points were tops for the visitors. Toward Better Mental Health BY ANN MEAD ASH

“Younger generations are more apt to accept, support, and encourage loved ones to get help (for mental health issues),” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). “That’s a culture shift,” added McDevitt, who noted that data shows people are being educated about mental health. “That is the only way we will reduce the stigma,” she concluded. McDevitt noted that breaking through the stigma

should result in a changed view of overall wellness. “We will be looking at mental health the same way we look at physical health because they’re intertwined,” she shared. “If you aren’t mentally well, you will not be physically well (and vice versa).” Noting that variables associated with COVID-19 have propelled attitudes toward mental health forward, McDevitt pointed to specific areas where struggles have been clear, including with children and in workplaces.

“I think if there’s ever a time to address good mental health support in the workplace, it’s now,” noted McDevitt. “Supervisors need to understand that depression alters the person.” McDevitt added that while job expectations are necessary, flexibility is essential to help maintain employee mental wellness. “Someone who is struggling will be less productive, tardy, not meet deadlines, or be absent. The more (employees are supported) and connected to care, the more they want to give back, and the faster

they will want to heal.” According to McDevitt, data is also showing that parents of today’s children are likely to seek support for a child’s mental health needs. In addition, teachers and guidance counselors are available to children attending school. In Pennsylvania, young people age 14 and older may make their own mental health decisions. McDevitt noted that teenagers may contact MHALC directly to be connected to resources. Because the northeast portion of the U.S. has high-
