It’s Fun To Stay At The Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA
The Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA facility offers a wide range of activities for people of all ages. BY COURTNEY MENGEL
ounded in 1844 in London, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), also known as the Y, serves the community by offering programs that are intended to help people build healthy spirits, minds, and bodies. By instilling Christian ideas in its programs, the YMCA strives to develop and practice the principles of faith, hope, love, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Located at 800 Village Road, Lancaster, the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA branch opened in 2007. “We don’t like to really see ourselves as a ‘gym and swim,’” said executive director Rick Wagner. “We want to be a pillar of the community, so we like to offer community-based programming.” The Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA offers programs such as swim lessons, summer camp, youth

On Saturday, April 2, there will be a Splish-Splash Easter Egg Bash where participants will hunt for Easter eggs in the pool, and Healthy Kids Day will return on Saturday, April 30. More details on these events will come soon. “If you want to feel welcome, if you want no judgments, if you want that community aspect where you’re not just coming to a gym but you’re coming to a family, then come here,” noted Wagner. “The YMCA is here not just for membership but any type of communitybased relationship or communitybased need.” For more information about the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA, visit www.rosesymca.org or call 717-464-4000.
PRESIDENTS’ DAY
SALES EVENT
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
In March of 2016, Carol Heth was on a bus heading to New York City when inspiration struck. Having participated in an outdoor farm-to-table dinner, Carol thought she could take the idea one step further. “I said, ‘How about if we do a dinner in the field on our property and at the same time, we help some people who are going through health hardships?’” she recalled. By April of 2016, Carol had rounded up a team to help bring her vision to life. By June, the group had three potential beneficiaries of the dinner and by the fall, the first meal was held. “I wasn’t sure how it was going to go or what we’d be able to do to help the recipients, and I thought it was a once-anddone thing, but it wasn’t,” she stated. Having raised more than $5,600 for each of the first year’s beneficiaries, Carol knew she was onto something. Seven years later, the nonprofit Lancaster County Field of Hope has not only held annual dinners See Hope pg 5

It was the 8th time this season L-S has scored 70 points or more. With an impressive shooting performance by Wert who canned seven treys en route to a gamehigh 25 points, a scrappy defensive effort by Vranich (10 rebounds and 12 points) and another 11 points from Ty Burton, L-S eventually pulled away. “Ben has been shooting well all year,” said Berryman of his photo by Mona Steinhauer 7-of-9 effort from In a home game against Elco, Friday, downtown, “and Luka January 21, Luke Hines scores on a is just a disruptor on putback in Lampeter’s 71-49 victory. defense.” BY MONA STEINHAUER
The Raiders jumped out to a 7-2 lead but by the end of the frame and with back-toback threes from Wert and Burton, L-S pulled ahead 16-9 and never looked back. Wert drilled back-to-back treys late in the second as L-S built a 33-23 lead at the half. Parido added to the sniper shooting with a pair of triples to open the third as L-S built a 13 point lead. They dropped in 21 fourth quarter points while holding the visitors to 12. GIRLS’ HOOPS Looking to avenge a fourpoint loss to the Barons on December 16, L-S came out strong last Tuesday and led by as many as seven in the first quarter and six in the third before the Barons made things interesting. Down 35-34 with eight minutes remaining, Manheim took its first lead at 36-35 and led 45-43 with over a minute remaining. After hitting three key free throws and stopping Manheim’s Maddie Knier the game was tied at 45 with 2.9 ticks left. Maggie Visniski took a sideline inbounds pass from Jenna Daveler, split a pair of defenders and beat the clock with a layup that lifted L-S to a 47-45 thriller over the Barons and forcing a tie at the top of Section Three. Manheim’s 1,000-point scorer, Knier, finished with 17 points but it wasn’t enough. Kiersten Hostetter knocked down three triples and netted 22 points and Daveler added 12. The Pioneers were clutch at the free throw line, making 7-of-9 attempts in the fourth quarter with Hostetter going 3-for-5.

“What a great, great win,” said an elated head coach Tony Fink. “Kiersten had a career high, Jenna had outstanding defense and Katie (Ranck), Maggie and Ella (Horst)did the dirty work around the rim. It was a total team effort.” On Friday, Jan. 21, the Pioneers hung in for a 40-36 victory at Elco. Leading 12-8 in the first and 35-24 after three, L-S went 0-for-7 from the free throw line but survived a 12-5 fourth quarter rally by the Raiders. Daveler led all scorers with 16 points, including four triples. SWIMMING With a mixed-up lineup, the Lady Pioneers moved to 2-1 with a commanding 120-46 victory over Lancaster Catholic on January 20 while the boys’ team earned their first victory, 83-46. “We had a number of swimmers swimming different events and we mixed up the relays,” said head coach Kylie Turner. “We had a total of 35 best times. That included beating relay seeds, setting PR’s and swimmers with no times (NT). It was fun to watch the swimmers compete to their best potential in new events.” The girls won 7 of 10 events but used their depth to pull away. Grace Schonour, Kara Scranton, Krista Lambert and Zara Paisley jump started the action by claiming the 200 medley relay. Paisley also won the 200 IM, with Tori Smith and Addie Rodriguez taking second and third, and was tops in the 100 back with Rodriguez adding another third. Abby Welchans and Scranton went 1-2 in the 50 free and Scranton and Ashley Prouse followed suit in the 100 free. Prouse, Schonour, Welchans and Abigail Wolff earned the top time in the 200 free relay while Lambert, Jocelyn Romero, Wolff and Scranton did the same in the 400 free. Ryan Smecker had a standout day to lead the boys team. He and Matt Rota went 1-2 in the 200 free and he and Cooper Honert were tops in the 100 free. M. Rota added the top time in the 100 fly while Honert rose to the top in the 100 back.

Honert also opened the winning 200 free relay with Smecker, Kyle Spaulding and Andrew Reidenbaugh contributing. Reindenbaugh also won the 100 breaststroke and anchored the winning 400 free relay with M. Rota, Christian Rota and Spaulding leading the way. Last Monday, however, the going was a bit tougher as both teams suffered losses to Elizabethtown (3-1). The boys’ dropped to 1-3 with a 108-58 loss while the girls (2-2) fell just shy, 90-80. Reidenbaugh (50 and 100 free) and Smecker (200 free, 100 fly) were the top pointgetters with two wins each. Kyle Spaulding added a win in the 200 IM and joined
Smecker, Reidenbaugh and M. Rota for the top time in the 400 free relay. Welchans, with a 500 free win, and Scranton, who won the 100 fly, also teamed with Lambert and Gerhardt for a 400 free relay victory. Paisley’s top 100 free rounded out the winners. WRESTLING L-S dropped a 54-13 contest at Garden Spot last Wednesday after giving up five forfeits and three falls. Riley Bonholtzer earned almost half of Lampeter’s points with a 3:46 fall over Josiah Smucker at 120. Jaiden Newton (160) posted a 9-0 major and Joel Bitler followed with a hard-fought 5-4 decision over Jevon Martin.

At the auction, the organization will reveal its 2022 recipients, Heth noted, adding that there may be up to six beneficiaries. On Friday, May 6, the organization will hold its third annual golf tournament at Foxchase Golf Club in Stevens, and on Saturday, Sept. 10, it will host Carol and Pete Heth its seventh annual benefit dinner at the Heths’ home. Carol emphasized that the success of Lancaster County Field of Hope relies on support from both her team and the community. “I could not do this without my family and the people on the board,” she said, referring in part to her three grown children and five grandchildren, who help with the organization. “As our name says, we are Lancaster County based. We’re helping Guests write messages of encouragement to recipients at a Field of Hope dinner. local individuals.” She encourages everyone to support Lancaster County Field of Hope, no matter how small the effort. “I always say $1 is $1 more than we had yesterday,” she commented. each fall to help people who are facing unexpected medical issues but has expanded to raise funds throughout the year. “To date, we have helped 26 recipients and their families, and we are just shy of giving $235,000 away to individuals,” Carol remarked. Carol and her husband, Pete, are no strangers to helping others. Throughout the years, the lifelong Lancaster County residents, who live in Columbia, have organized fundraisers for friends who needed help. They also open the kitchen at their 1860s farmhouse to hands-on cooking experiences and rent out properties on their six-acre lot through Airbnb. Thanks to their local connections, the Heths have been able to rely on donations for almost all of the food and services needed for their annual dinner. “We are an all-volunteer organization, and the recipients get to keep all of the funds we raise after expenses,” Carol said. “We try to keep those expenses as low as possible.” This month, Lancaster County Field of Hope will be the beneficiary of proceeds from trivia night at Wacker Brewing Company in Willow Street on Wednesday

The Ephrata Area Churches’ annual sportsmen’s banquet was canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year, the group, which includes about a dozen Ephrata- and Akron-area churches, is planning to hold the event. The speaker will be Tracy Breen, a full-time outdoor writer, speaker, and marketing consultant. He will speak on the topic of “Outwitting a Big Game Animal’s Senses.” The family-friendly banquet will be held on Friday, March 11, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 Tower Road, New Holland. Doors will open at 5:15 p.m. so attendees can view vendor and other displays. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. A number of door prizes will be given out at the event as well. Breen is from Muskegon, Mich., where he was raised by a family that included a number of hunters and trappers, who introduced him to their love of outdoor adventures when he was quite young. His father made a living trapping into the late 1970s, when he turned to taxidermy. His father’s influence led Breen to choose a career in the great outdoors. Raised in a Christian home, Breen sought to connect his faith with his work in a significant way. He has served as editor of God’s Great Outdoors Internet Outdoor Magazine, and he has written for New Pioneer, Petersen’s Bowhunting, and Outdoor Life. He has experienced hunting, fishing, and speaking throughout North America. Breen has cerebral palsy, which affects much of his

Last State Silver Bank Rolls up for grabs Fortune of old Silver Coins issued by the U.S. Gov’t sealed away in the only State Restricted Bank Rolls known to exist are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents STATE RESTRICTION: Only residents of PA get the $19 state minimum - non state residents must pay $57 per coin PENNSYLVANIA - “We’re bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. That’s because the next 2 days the last remaining State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents who call the National Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania you cover only the $19 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s twenty rarely seen Silver clad Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars worth up to 60 times their face value for just $380 which is a real steal because non state residents must pay $57 per coin which totals $1,140 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. “National Mint and Treasury recently spoke with its Chief Professional Numismatist who said ‘Very few people have ever actually saw one of these rarely seen Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars minted over 50 years ago. But to actually find them sealed away in State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “Now that the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of Pennsylvania residents claim the maximum limit al-
lowed of 6 Kennedy Presidential Silver Bank Rolls per resident before they’re all gone,” said Lynne. “That’s because the dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Silver clad Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that these coins date back tot he mid 1900’s and some may be worth up to 60 times their face value, so there is no telling what Pennsylvania residents will find until they sort through all the coins,” Lynne went on to say. “Rarely seen silver coins like these are highly sought after, but we’ve never seen anything like this before. According to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins many Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars have nearly doubled in collector value in just the last several years,” Lynne said. “We’re guessing thousands of Pennsylvania residents will be taking the maximum limit of 6 Bank Rolls because you can only get them rolled this way directly from the National Mint and Treasury and they are the only State Restricted Bank Rolls known to exist,” Lynne continued. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all lines are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all,” Lynne said. The only thing readers of today’s newspaper publication need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania and call the National Toll-Free Hotlines before the 2-day deadline ends midnight tomorrow. Q IMPORTANT FACTS: The dates and mint marks of the rarely seen Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls have never been searched. Coin values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees, but any rare, scarce or highly collectible coins, regardless of their value that state residents may find inside the sealed Bank Rolls are theirs to keep.
Q FLYING OUT THE DOOR: Calls are pouring in from state residents who are trying to get their hands on the last State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls known to exist sealed away in the secured packages pictured above before the deadline ends. That’s because residents who beat the 2-day deadline printed in today’s publication by calling 1-800-233-5658 Ext. JFR1622 are cashing in on the lowest ever state minimum price set by the National Mint and Treasury.
Answering Your Questions Q: How to claim the last State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls A: If you are a Pennsylvania resident read the important information below about claiming the State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls, then call the State Toll-Free Hotline at: 1-800-233-5658 EXT: JFR1622 beginning at precisely 8:30 A.M. this morning. Q: Are these Silver Kennedy Half Dollars worth more than other Half Dollars? A: Yes. These rarely seen Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars were minted in the mid 1900’s. That makes these silver coins extremely collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all. In fact, these Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars were the last silver coins minted for circulation. That’s why many of them now command collector values of many times their face value so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday. Q: How much are the State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls worth? A: It’s impossible to say, but these Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars date back to the mid 1900’s and some are worth up to 60 times the face value and there are 20 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know they are the only Pennsylvania State Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars are highly collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.
Q: How do I get the State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls? A: The only thing Pennsylvania residents need to do is call the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-233-5658 Ext. JFR1622 before the deadline ends. Everyone who does is getting the only State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls known to exist. That’s a full Bank Roll of 20 Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars for just the $19 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, which totals just $380 for the full Bank Roll. That’s a real steal because non state residents are not permitted to call before 5 pm tomorrow and must pay $1,140 for each Pennsylvania State Restricted Silver Bank Roll if any remain.
R080512
Q: Why are so many Pennsylvania residents calling to get them? A: Because they are the only State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and everyone wants their share. These are not ordinary bank rolls. These are full Bank Rolls containing 20 Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars dating clear back to the mid 1900’s some worth up to 60 times their face value. Remember this. Only Pennsylvania residents are guaranteed to get them for just the $19 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury for the next two days. Non state residents must pay $57 per coin.

In the fall of 2021, Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) Good News Clubs went live again across Lancaster County and beyond. In the spring of 2022, in-person clubs are planned for elementary-age students in the school districts of Columbia, Conestoga Valley, ELANCO, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Hempfield, LampeterStrasburg, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Pequea Valley, Lancaster, Warwick, and Octorara. Virtual clubs will be offered in Cocalico, Donegal, Manheim Central, and Solanco school districts. A program for sixththrough eighth-grade students will also be starting at Martin Meylin Middle School in Lampeter-Strasburg School District. “We would like to get the clubs all restarted,” said Lisa Kilgore, director of CEF of Lancaster County, who noted that more than 30 clubs were meeting in the county prior to the onset of COVID-19. “We had 17 clubs last fall, plus a Zoom club, and we will have more than 20 this spring,” noted Kilgore. “It’s gradually rebuilding.” CEF is an international organization founded in 1937, with

an active branch in Lancaster County since 1944. “Our purpose is threefold: to evangelize, disciple, and establish children in a local church,” said Kilgore. Clubs are open to any child who attends the school where the club meets. Usually a program for students in first grade through the highest grade level at the school is offered, but in some districts kindergarten clubs are available. Kilgore noted that each club is sponsored by a partner church. “When we finish our 14 weeks (of club meetings), we want (children) to stay connected if they want to. We try to connect them to that partner church,” she said. Good News Club meetings, which are held after school, involve a Bible lesson; a mem-
ory verse; songs; games; small group time, which is called Wonder Time; and missions. Each semester has its own theme. The spring 2022 series is called “The Early Church God’s Power in Action.” The program has a rotating sixyear curriculum. Volunteers are an integral part of the program. “We try to have one adult for every six children,” said Kilgore, who noted that volunteers are trained to use the curriculum. Kilgore praised helpers who have been part of the program the last two years. “The volunteers who have stuck with us through COVID have been really wonderful,” she said. “The kids have needed to talk more.” She pointed out that volunteering can be rewarding
to those who take the opportunity to help guide young lives. “We want to be encouraging to kids and families right now,” she said. “It is a blessing to us to be able to do that.” Kilgore noted that she is grateful for God’s provision over the last few years. “Financially, God has been bringing support,” she said. “He has kept us going in better ways than we could have imagined.” Those who wish to sign a child up for a Good News Club may visit www.ceflancaster.org and click on the registration tab to find the elementary school where their child would attend. Individuals who wish to volunteer may contact CEF through the website or call 717-569-5412.

MS (And Fogarty) Run The US BY COURTNEY MENGEL
During the pandemic in 2020, Quarryville resident Jim Fogarty decided to get himself mentally and physically healthy. To achieve this goal, Jim started running in the mornings and soon discovered his passion and enjoyment for long distance running. One of his favorite local places to run is the Enola Low Grade Trail, which, according to Jim, is a wonderful asset to the area. After completing two half marathons, he wanted to challenge himself further, so he began searching for fundraising relays in which he could participate. While scrolling on Facebook, Jim stumbled across MS Run the US. Four years before Ashley Schneider, founder of MS Run the US, was born, her mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). She completed a 3,288-mile solo run across America in 2010 to raise
$500,000 for MS research, but only raised 10% of her initial goal. As a result, she decided to run across America again, but with more people. In 2013, MS Run the US launched an annual relay run in which 19 individuals each run six marathons in six days and fundraise at least $10,000. The money raised supports MS Run the US’ mission to raise awareness of the disease, aid research, and help those living with disability due to MS. Jim identified with Schneider, as his mother had also received an MS diagnosis. Witnessing the negative impact of MS on his mother’s quality of life for the past 20 years is what inspired Jim to sign up for MS Run the US. MS is a potentially disabling disease of the central nervous system. With MS, there are communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body, which can cause permanent damage to or deterioration of the nerves. There is no known
cure, but certain treatments can help individuals manage their symptoms. In the case of Jim’s mother, Mary Beth Fogarty, she experiences tiredness, fatigue, and mobility issues, and her body does not handle warm temperatures well. “I can’t imagine knowing there’s no cure for a disease you’ve been diagnosed with and that it will only get worse,” said Jim. “I want to help with the mental anguish and financial burden that comes with that.” Between Sunday, July 31 and Friday, Aug. 5, Jim will run a total of 169 miles from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, to Brookville. This means that he will run about 28 miles each day to complete segment 17 of

Local Bulldogs Win Accolades Several players on the Bulldogs Football Team at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, Lancaster, received 2021 Seaboard Conference honors. In total, seven Bulldogs won All-Conference Offensive First team honors while nine defensive players made first team. Seven players from Thaddeus Stevens were recognized as Second Team All-Conference players. Local 2021 All Seaboard Conference selections include Meleik Crenshaw (Columbia High School, Columbia) - First Team Offensive Line; Josh Gibson (Penn Manor High School,
Lancaster) - First Team Defense: Defensive Back; Tim Martin (Lampeter-Strasburg High School, Strasburg) - Second Team Offense: Wide Receiver; Cole Patrick (Elizabethtown Area High School, Elizabethtown) - Second Team Offense: Quarterback; and Kamiron Webster (Milton Hershey High School, Hershey) - Second Team Defense: Defensive Back. The Bulldogs also took home Conference Coach of the Year, which was awarded to Dennis Iezzi. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 6-2 record and won the Seaboard Conference.
Jim Fogarty
the 19-segment relay, which spans from Santa Monica, Calif., to New York, N.Y. “My goal is twofold,” said Jim. “To bring awareness to this disease and to raise money for finding a cure and helping those currently with it. Every dollar really does help with this effort.” To donate to Jim’s relay fundraiser, visit https://bit.ly/ JimMSRuntheUS. To learn more about MS Run the US, visit www.msruntheus.org.
