GOTR seeks superstars for spring season
G
irls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster will open registration for its upcoming spring season on T hursday, Feb. 15. The organization will have teams in multiple school districts in Lancaster County and the surrounding area, and girls who are in third, fourth or fifth grade are invited to sign up with their local group. Registration will remain open online at http://tinyurl.com /GOTRlanc24 until the first week of the season, which will kick off on Monday, March 11. Over the course of the 10-week spring season, GOTR teams will meet twice a week for a one and a half session. During each session, volunteer coaches will guide team members through a curriculum designed to help young girls to develop self-confidence and various social skills. The program will incorporate physical activities to supplement every lesson and to prepare the girls for a 5K celebration at the end of the season.
The 5K will be held on Saturday, May 4, at Franklin & Marshall College, 637 College Ave., Lancaster. “‘Run’ is in the name, but the program is really about helping to lift up and empower girls,” said Jennifer West, executive director of GOTR Lancaster. “You can run, hop, roll, walk or push through our lessons and the 5K.” This year, GOTR will introduce a new curriculum titled “Hello Superstar.” While the new material shares many of the same goals as GOTR’s previous lessons, it will place an additional focus on the importance of inclusion and celebrating diversity. As part of the curriculum, each team will collaborate on a project that will positively impact the local community, and the girls will have an opportunity to choose where to direct the focus of the assignment. In the past, participants’ projects have supported animal rescues, teachers throughout their school district, local first responders and individuals who could use a care package.

If you’ve lived in southeastern Pennsylvania for more than a year, you are likely famili ar w i th the re g ion’s inconsistent weather patterns that accompany the changing of the seasons. As winter draws to a close every year, the frigid nights are contrasted with warm days, confusing local wildlife and Lancastrians alike. Although it might be inconvenient for residents to leave the house with
a warm jacket they won’t need for another 12 hours, the erratic weather makes the area a perfect place to find nature’s sweetest treat: maple syrup. Maple trees that are located in cold climates accumulate sap in their trunks and roots to prepare for winter. In early spring, the trees convert the sap’s starch to sugar, after which it is pumped throughout their branches to grow new leaves. The process relies on the alternating daytime and nighttime temperatures See Maple sugaring pg 2
“The girls learn that it’s important to think of others while taking care of yourself, and it’s really neat to see teams choose a project meaningful to them,” said Kylie Homan, GOTR Lancaster’s program director. “They
are not only making a difference in somebody’s life, but also in the community at large.” GOTR Lancaster expects to have more than 1,200 girls and 90 teams participate in the spring season, which will require a
minimum of 400 volunteer coaches. Coaches are not required to be runners themselves, and students in high school are invited to sign up as volunteers. For more information, visit www.gotrlancaster.org.

to distribute the stored tree sap, as the repeated thawing and refreezing of the liquid allows it to flow to other parts of the tree. Maple trees can be found in other states such as Georgia, but their warm climates render the sap unable to be harvested. For nearly 50 years, the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation’s Environmental Center has organized an annual series to explain the process of extracting maple syrup. Park naturalists host the series at Lancaster County Central Park, where they discuss the histor y of maple syrup and its many products. After an interactive demonstration that includes tapping a tree and boiling its sap, guests are traditionally invited to sample freshly made maple sugar candy. T his year, the maple sugaring series will kick off on Saturday, Feb. 24. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., visitors may stop by Pavilion 11 at Lancaster County Central
Park, 733 Williamson Road, Lancaster, to participate in educational activities with senior naturalists such as Lisa Sanchez. Additional maple sugaring events will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, and Sunday, March 3. Homeschool groups are invited to schedule weekday sessions online. For more information, visit http://tinyurl .com/lancmaplesyrup. “Natural maple sugar is a combination of sucrose and fructose, and it has a lower glycemic index because of how your body breaks it down,” said Sanchez, who has been making maple candy for 30 years. “It also contains vitamins and minerals like iron, calcium and magnesium, which you only get from something made the process of photosynthesis.” Sanchez will also give a presentation on maple syrup at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, at the Quarryville Library Center, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. Theater camp from pg 1 May 31; registrants are encouraged to sign up early, as all spaces are typically filled by the end of March. To register, visit https:// gccws.net/outpourkids. Each day of the summer camp will include music rehearsal, drama coaching, outdoor games, snacks, craft activities and a devotional. The theme of the daily activities will revolve around the “God Squad,” a fictional group of characters that abides by Scriptural teachings. The God Squad will attempt to impart Christian values to students under the influence of the “ME Dominion,” an opposing faction that promotes individualism and self-fulfillment. The program will culminate with a performance on July 26 at 7 p.m. “Throughout the musical, the kids will examine what happens in a social media-obsessed culture and ways to overcome that,” said Katie Weiand, who serves as the director of Grace Community Church’s youth ministry Outpour Kids. “Children today are faced with so much anxiety, but the armor of God can ward off things that can hurt a child’s heart.” Outpour Kids held its first musical theater camp in 2021, and the program has been held every year since. More than 100 kids participated in the camp last year, and the 2024 production will include various roles, from lead parts to background characters.

It’s a complex topic. But not one that energetic and curious fourth-graders can’t comprehend. Fourth-grade students at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, are learning the basics of electronics, robotics and coding. They’re being taught those technological disciplines through a project-based learning approach that combines elements of science, engineering, art and math. “Fourth and fifth are the middle grades,” said Jenna Longenecker Conde, a kindergarten through sixth-grade art and design teacher at Lancaster Mennonite who collaborated with fourth-grade classroom instructors to teach the curriculum. “Students have a lot of energy and are motivated to learn. They’re more capable of doing things than they were a few years ago. They’re sort of at that sweet spot for learning. It feels like

a great age to capture that enthusiasm.” A total of 37 students, broken into two classes, mee t twice a week to explore the fundamentals of electronics, robotics and coding. Working in small groups, the students complete hands-on projects that

promote communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. “It really can be complex,” said Longenecker Conde. “I feel fortunate to be able to work with a team to educate our students about this. They’re learning the basics of electricity, like, How do you let electricity flow?’ We try to break them down to their building blocks. The kids take what they’ve already learned and put it all together.” One of the students’ assignments involved creating, testing and redesigning an interactive toy that could perform at least one task or action. After the projects were completed, students shared their work with the rest of the class and showed their fellow students how their projects worked. “ W i t h p ro j e c t- b a s e d learning, there’s an essential question related to the real world,” said Longenecker Conde. “It makes it more authentic because it’s a lived experience. Now it makes more sense to learn about things like fractions. It helps students stick to their basics a little more. What we’ve found is that project-based lear ning works really well with all subject matters.” Of course, the science exercises can also teach life lessons. “O ne o f the big gest
takeaways is that students have to learn to communicate and work well together,” said Longenecker Conde. “They’re learning collaboration, they’re coming to a consensus and sharing tasks. It involves critical thinking and persistence.” “(The classes are) real courses about how things work in the real world,” continued Longenecker Conde. “The students are eager to absorb information. The resources make it easier to introduce it to them. It gets them excited about trying something new.” L ancaster Mennonite School is a faith-based private school with an enrollment of 560 students in prekindergarten through 12th grade. It was founded by members of the Mennonite religion in 1942, but over the years it has evolved to include students of varying backgrounds and beliefs. “There’s a lot of hope for future generations,” said L ancaster Mennonite ’s director of marketing and communications, Aubrey Kreider. “The students we work with have a lot of curiosity, and they’re excited to learn.” “We’re trying to prepare students to change the world,” Kreider added.
