What A Girl Wants To Do GOTR Plans Summer Camp BY ANN MEAD ASH

Jen West, program director for Girls on the Run (GOTR), is exuberant about the programming the 2022 Camp GOTR will offer to area girls entering third, fourth, or fifth grades by fall. “It opens possibilities for new careers for girls … where they can see past elementary school to what will be available for them (in the future),” said West. Camp GOTR will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day from Monday, June 13, through Friday, June 17, at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology Greiner Advanced Manufacturing Center, 599 Chesapeake St., Lancaster. Mornings will feature opportunities to delve into the GOTR curriculum designed to boost confidence and appreciation as campers write, create, discuss, and connect. In the afternoon, girls will participate in excursions focused on careers for See GOTR pg 2

get experiences like this anywhere else. Live performances are something that you can remember really well, and seeing the actors in front of you, I feel, is way more special than just seeing them on a screen.” “Come and support our music department,” said Cassie. “It’s a fun, high-energy show, and aesthetically pleasing. I remember last year in ‘Godspell,’ we would just end the scene, and it was quiet because no one was here, so I’m looking forward to the applause and support.” “This is the first live performance since 2020, so it’s super exciting to be all back together again,” stated Brooke. “We definitely want people to come out to support our live productions.” Although Ditzler is the director, he noted that it is truly a democratic

process between himself, choreographer Jo Carole Dodson, vocal director Erik Welchans, and pit orchestra conductor Robert Shaubach. “It’s always been this fun process of four people coming together and just hashing out a musical and having a great time,” said Ditzler. All showings will take place in the Performing Arts Center auditorium at LSHS, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. Performances will occur at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 3; Friday, March 4; and Saturday, March 5, with a matinee showing at 2 p.m. on March 5. Tickets can be purchased at the door prior to each performance or online by visiting https://bit.ly/Anything GoesMusicalTickets. hat do you get when an heiress, a stowaway, a gangster, and a nightclub singer board a cruise ship? Those who see the spring musical at Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS) will discover that “Anything Goes.” With music and lyrics written by Cole Porter, “Anything Goes” is about a group of people on an ocean liner traveling from New York to London. Stowaway Billy Crocker, played by senior Weston Weaver, sneaks on board because he is in love with heiress Hope Harcourt, played by senior Brooke Smith, who is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, played by senior Paul Becker. With the help of nightclub singer Reno Sweeney, played by

senior Cassie Meck, and gangster Moonface Martin, played by sophomore Aiden Flory, Billy sets out to win Hope’s affection. “Cole Porter has this knack for making hysterical comedy, wonderful side characters, incredible music, and witty lyrics,” explained LSHS musical director Kevin Ditzler. “It really is just the perfect time to enjoy one of the best musicals ever created because it’s timeless but of its time at the same time.” “Anything Goes” will be the first musical LSHS students perform in front of a live audience since 2020. Several cast members expressed their excitement for the live performances. “It’s always so fun to see what a new show and a new cast can bring,” commented Aiden. “You can’t really

women, including public safety, health and medicine, machine technology, and entertainment. Girls will meet mounted police, learn about robotic surgery and orthopedics, make a keychain in a machine shop, and visit a multiplex cinema. GOTR has partnered with Thaddeus Stevens, UPMC, and Penn Cinema to make these field trips possible. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for girls to experience GOTR curriculum while also exposing them to (future) careers they might not have considered,” said Katie Sandoe, GOTR executive director. “They can see themselves in those roles and (think about) what they could potentially become.” Girls do not need to be past GOTR program participants to attend camp. All state, CDC, and program host COVID-19 guidelines in place at the time of camp will be followed. Registration is on a first-come, firstserved basis, and space is limited. There is a program fee, and financial assistance is available. For details and registration, visit www.gotr lancaster.org. GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. One study found that 85% of girls in the program showed gains in those areas, along with increased long-term physical activity and critical life skills. Registration for the 2022 spring season is open, and the season will begin on Monday, March 28. The GOTR 5K presented by OAL will be held on Saturday, May 21, at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster.

Red Cross Seeks Volunteers The American Red Cross invites community members to become volunteers. Local volunteers enable the Red Cross to support its community and neighbors in need every day. In the last year, Greater Pennsylvania Red Cross volunteers provided aid, including food and shelter, to over 6,300 people affected by home fires and other disasters in Pennsylvania. Among the available volunteer positions are a transportation specialist and Disaster Action Team members. Transportation specialists are the link between blood donors and blood recipients. They deliver blood, platelets, and other blood products to processing centers and to hospitals for patient use. Each day, people are forced from their homes due to fires, storms, and other disasters. Disaster Action Teams meet the disaster-caused needs of individuals and households, such as lodging and clothing, and connect people with longterm recovery services. Training is free. To learn more, visit www.redcross.org/ volunteertoday. COVID-19 vaccination is required for inperson volunteer roles. When considering volunteer opportunities, individuals should review the CDC guidance for people who are at higher risk for severe illness, consult their health care provider, and follow local guidance.

Freedom Life Church will launch a new campus location under the leadership of pastor Derek and Lily Weidman on Sunday, Feb. 27, at Smith Middle School, 645 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. Services for children and adults will begin at 10 a.m. every Sunday. FL Kids will provide interactive lessons for children in fifth grade and younger in the school cafeteria and gymnasium while the worship service takes place in the auditorium. Formerly, beginning in September 2016, a Freedom Life Church campus met weekly at Providence Elementary School. Due to the pandemic and COVID restrictions, the campus closed its doors in March 2020, and many attendees switched to meeting at the Freedom Life main campus located on Noble Road in Christiana. Paisley Wins Gold; Boys Advance to L-L Finals

BY MONA STEINHAUER

The post-season got underway for the Pioneer teams with swimming, and girls and boys basketball all extending their seasons over the last week and with successful results. The Pioneer swim teams competed in the LancasterLebanon League championships at Wilson High School Feb. 11-12 and earned eight top ten finishes. Kara Paisley turned in a pair of standout swims, earning the highest finishes for the Pioneers. On Friday the sophomore clocked a 25.01 in the

50 freestyle for a gold medal finish, improving on last year’s seventh place effort. One day later, Paisley settled for bronze in the 100 free with a 54.10. “Zara has the potential to place high at districts and even compete at states,” said head coach Kylie Turner. Paisley also anchored Lampeter’s 400 free relay team, joining Ashley Prouse, Kara Scranton, and Abby Welchans for a fourth-place finish with a 3:49.61. That same group settled for fifth place in the 200 free relay (1:44.50) improving on last year’s seventh place.

“The 400 free relay teams for both teams were incredible,” said Turner. “Each swimmer produced their fastest splits this season. The girls came close to beating the school record in the 400 free by 1.5 seconds and even the 200 free relay by .03.” The boys’ top finisher for the weekend was Andrew Reidenbaugh. The senior moved up two places in the 50 free (23.02) grabbing sixth place. He was also eighth in the 100 free and teamed with Ryan Smecker, Christian Rota, and Kyle Spaulding for a fifth-place time of 3:31.3 in the 400 free relay. That same group was ninth in the 200 free. Other top ten place winners included Scranton in the 100 fly and the 200 medley team of Kylie Gerhardt, Prouse, Jocelyn Wolff and Krista Lambert.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL After an exciting end to the regular season that led to a share of the Section Three title, the Lady Pioneers got the post-season underway Thursday, February 10, at Warwick with a Lancaster-Lebanon League play-in game against Section 5 runner-up Pequea Valley (7-3, 12-10 overall). The Pioneers, who haven’t been to an L-L final since 2013, struggled at the start and fell behind 13-11 after the opening eight minutes. L-S picked up the pace after that, winning the next three frames, including an 8-2 run through the third quarter that extended a 25-23 halftime lead. “That was not our best performance,” said head coach Tony Fink. “We missed a ton of layups and free throws (7). At halftime I told them to remember our defensive game plan and they did. We struggled offensively but our defense won the game.”

It was as close as L-S would get. Down 36-34 with 47.6 remaining, the Comets dropped a pair of free throws and scored a layup at the buzzer to advance. L-S knocked down five triples in the first quarter (11 in the game) and exploded to a 24-10 advantage. Lebanon made a run in the second frame, cutting the lead to four (34-30) on a triple from leading scorer Marquis Ferreira (12 points) but Burton fired back with a pair of threes and Luke Hines came off the bench with five, helping L-S to a 40-30 lead at the break. Burton scored the first five points of the third quarter and Parido (11 points) knocked down two straight three balls, pushing the lead to 55-35 with 2:37 left. Barons elected to put the Pioneers on the foul line and went to the three-point line to attempt a comeback after falling behind 61-46. That strategy closed the gap to single digits but didn’t provide an upset as the Pioneers went 16-for-19 from the foul line, including Burton’s 11-of-12 in the fourth. Wert settled for 20 points, including the first seven of the third quarter as L-S pushed the lead to 39-34. Parido finished with nine points on three first half treys. He and Vranich (7 points), who dished out six assists, both grabbed five rebounds. Hines, who started for Berkeley Wagner (ankle injury), grabbed four boards, and scored two points.

It was just the second time this season L-S won by single digits. Burton poured in a seasonhigh 33 points, holding off Baron sniper Trey Grube with 26 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter when the
