Soup Group raises funds for life skills class

InJanuary, Martin Meylin Middle School students began a fundraising project called the Soup Group. The group, which comprises students in the school’s life skills class, makes soup from scratch. It then sells the soup to school faculty members to raise money for field trips and classroom materials.

The Soup Group sold 54 quarts of soup to teachers at Martin Meylin under the supervision of special education teacher Kristina Canty and former kitchen manager Lisa Lawson. In March, the group plans to make another batch of soup to sell to school staff members and will extend its sale to the administration building. “It was very successful in January. People like it, so we’d like to continue it; the money raised from the fundraiser goes right back to the kids and their trips,” Canty said.

High School to present “Annie”

Lampeter Strasburg High School, (LSHS) 1600 Book Road, Lancaster, will present “Annie” as its spring musical on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 2, 3 and 4. Each night will have a 7 p.m. performance, and there will also be a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday.

“Annie” is based on the 1924 comic strip “Little Orphan Annie.” The story follows a young orphan named Annie who is adopted by a

rich businessman in order to make himself appear philanthropic. The pair unexpectedly fosters a close familial bond, and Annie’s contagious optimism spreads across the country. LSHS faculty members cited a variety of reasons they selected “Annie” for this year’s spring musical. The play conveys a message of hope in difficult times, which resonated with the show’s director, Kevin Ditzler. “Once theaters opened back up after the COVID-19 pandemic, we found that fewer students were auditioning See Spring musical pg 7

The students in the life skills class are involved with each step of the soup cooking process, assisted by donations of aprons, hair nets, and other supplies from local businesses. In the past, the students have participated in other fundraisers such as selling magnets, but this is the first year that they have made soup to raise money.

Once a month, Canty takes her students in the life skills class on a community-based instruction trip. The trips serve as a way for the students to practice the skills that they learn in class out in the world as well as gain experience in working environments. In the past, the life skills class has visited the North Museum, participated in educational activities at Lancaster County Central Park and taken grocery trips for culinary projects. At Weis Markets, the students have stocked shelves, scanned groceries and completed vocational activities behind the scenes.

“The community around us has been fantastic,” Canty said. “The kids get real-life experience on these trips and enjoy being out in the community.” Canty hopes to use the funds raised from the next soup sale to rent a bus to take students on a trip in May to the Barnstormers’ stadium in Lancaster city with several other classes.

Canty said that she also hopes to use the money from the fundraiser to acquire equipment to turn part of her classroom into a sensory room for the students. The funds will also support a program that Canty utilizes to reward students’ behavior with prizes. In addition to behavioral lessons, students in the life skills class practice functional reading and math skills such as reading a menu or calculating the tip for a restaurant bill. “We go out and practice these skills in the community, things like being patient while waiting in line,” said Canty. “It’s for the students to be able to apply these things that they’ve learned.”

Toward spiritual health

Veronica Jimenez, lay counselor, volunteer prison chaplain, and author of the Sound Mind Awareness curriculum, is known for the classes she teaches at churches and recovery houses and for her counseling ministry. Jimenez’s journey to this place, however, has been hard-won and filled with twist and turns.

Originally from the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City, Jimenez suffered abuse from an early age. “I learned shame and rage very early,” Jimenez recalled, noting her situation created the “perfect storm for mental

illness.” “I wasn’t a healthy kid,” she said. “My heart, soul, mind, and spirit were all affected.” When Jimenez was a teenager, her anger became such an issue, she was sent to live in a girls’ home for a year. “That’s where I developed a heart for the incarcerated,” she said.

Around age 11, Jimenez remembers attending a Metro World Child Sunday school run by pastor Bill Wilson. “That’s where I first heard that God has a son named Jesus who loves children,” said Jimenez, who noted that at that time the grace of God first touched her life. “I still lived in a bad environment, but I learned to pray,” she said.

Sound Mind Awareness

frompg 1

When Jimenez met her husband, her life changed. She had been told she could not have children, but she prayed for a miracle because she saw how her husband loved children. “That was the first miracle I ever prayed for and received,” said Jimenez, who eventually had five children.

In 2010, Jimenez and her family moved to Lancaster with the goal of making a fresh start, but Jimenez experienced flashbacks, nightmares, and migraines. Marital problems appeared. Jimenez prayed for God to bring her a friend she could confide in. “God sent Brenda Green of Freedom Prayer Ministries and In the Light Ministries of Lancaster,” said Jimenez. Green worked in conjunction with a Christian doctor, and Jimenez respond-

ed positively to the treatment.

“That combination … was so effective, I was healed in 2012,” Jimenez stated. Green recognized Jimenez’s gift for teaching. Jimenez began to teach classes, eventually developing Sound Mind Awareness - based on the principles of repentance, renewal, reconnection, and retraining. In 2017, she began volunteering as a prison chaplain and branching into offering counseling by donation. She now teaches classes at ACTS Covenant Fellowship, 1927 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster. Her first online class will begin Wednesday, March 1. For information about Jimenez’s classes, readers may search for “Sound Mind Awareness” on Facebook or visit www.sound mindawareness.com.

First Recovery Auction planned

Lanny Millette, donor director with The Potter’s House, remembers that pastor Jaime Santiago of Restart Training Center Ministries (RTCM) contacted him a few years ago about holidng a fundraiser together as a show of unity among recovery ministries in Lancaster County. “It’s bigger than one ministry,” said Millette, who noted that Slow Down Ministries, which helps provide vehicles for graduates of Christ-centered programs like Potter’s House and RTCM, has joined in the effort as well.

The Lanco Recovery Benefit Auction, which will include live music, food vendors, and a candy drop, will be held at 320 N. Ronks Road, Bird-inHand, on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 4 and 5. Festivities will kick off at 5 p.m. on Aug 4

and at 9 a.m. on Aug. 5.

Currently, organizers are looking for sponsors to help cover the costs of bands, food, marketing, and more, and for businesses and individuals to donate new items to be auctioned. Among the new items

Frank Gaston of Slow Down Ministries has gathered to go up for bids are motorcycle parts and accessories, parts for offroad trucks, and a bicycle. “We would accept gift cards, vacations, or a dinner for six in a home,” said Millette.

Newton, Spahr grab third place in sectionals

The Pioneers had seven wrestlers competing at the District Three 3A sectional tournament at Hempfield on Saturday, February 18. The top four finishers at each weight class advance to the District Three/Southcentral Regional Tournament. L-S has two wrestlers still fighting for a spot at the big dance.

Jaiden Newton and Tre Spahr both finished in third place.

Newton, wrestling at 172, opened with a 4-0 decision over Arthur Rudd (Central Dauphin) in the quarterfinals but ran into Solanco’s Blaine Plastino in the semifinals and suffered a 6-1 loss after a scoreless first period.

Newton, seeded second, came back with a dominating 11-1 major decision in the consi-semis over Warwick’s Jack Koons and grabbed the bronze medal with a 5-1 final against Manheim Central’s Brodie Daugherty. That bout was scoreless over the first two periods before Newton broke in front with a reversal and three nearfall points. He currently sits at 29-12.

At heavyweight, Spahr picked up a forfeit win over Township’s Taylor Veilleux and then built a 6-1 lead over Palmyra’s Jayson Albright

before recording a 3:58 quarterfinals fall.

Spahr was pinned in the semifinals by eventual champ Nicholai Brotzman (Donegal) who also pinned Spahr in dual meet action back on January 4.

Spahr came back strong in the consolations, pinning McCaskey’s Eliezer Santiago in 55 seconds and Manheim Central’s Wyatt Kupres in 57 seconds to qualify for regionals. Also competing for the Pioneers was Elijah Myers (114), Connor Erb (127), Josh Heisey (145), Mitchell Swarr (152), and Ian VanDeusen (189).

Erb wrestled four bouts and recorded a pair of falls while Heisey, (25-14), opened with a fall but ended his season with a sudden victory loss to Central’s Aj Hondru. Heisey held a 3-0 lead heading into the second period before Hondru scored a reversal and two nearfall points to take a 4-3 lead. A technical violation tied the scoring but a takedown just 34 seconds in left Heisey on the outside.

BOWLING

Four members of the LampeterStrasburg bowling team competed in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Individual Championships with the girls’ competition getting underway

Thursday, February 16 at Palmyra Bowling and the boys following on Friday at Leisure Lanes.

Katie Pope, after six qualifying games, was sitting in sixth place with a 1095 total pin count. In the stepladder finals, Pope faced Penn Manor’s Corinne Smith and fell short of advancing, 191-177. She finished in eighth place overall.

“Katie did great,” praised head coach John Achille. “She came out of the gates strong, rolling a 246 in her first game. She had nine strikes total, with three in the tenth. She was in first place after that first game.”

She rolled a 166 in the second game, falling to third place and was fourth after a 154 and 196. She rounded out the six-game series with a 201 and a 132.

“Her six-game total was a 182.5 game average,” noted Achille, “just about her average for the season.

“Katie had a solid performance overall and has worked hard. She has been rock solid the entire season and she backed it up with her effort on the lanes.”

The boys’ competition was a bit shorter as none of the Pioneers qualified for the stepladder finals.

Nick Bukowski had Lampeter’s highest qualifying total of the day, tying Ephrata’s Tanner Murray at 1116. Unfortunately, 1145 was the cutoff for the top ten.

Maddux Harsh finished with a 942 with Ethan Snyder (912) and Peter Mecouch (876) following.

“Nick finished with a 186 average on the day, six pins higher than his season average,” noted Achille. “He got off to a slow start in the first game, not marking in the first three frames, but finished strong with a 177. That momentum carried him the rest of the day. He went 169, 189, 157, 188 and 236. After the third game he was in 16th place,” added Achille. “He got better each game, and his confidence was building.

“Everyone else struggled a bit, bowling below their season averages.

“Overall, it was a fun two days. To have five bowlers qualify for singles playoffs was a credit to their season performance,” said Achille. “They were all deserving. It did not work out the way some wanted it to, but it was a learning experience, and they are all back next year.”

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

With just one senior returning and a new coach patrolling the sideline, no one was really expecting L-S to get to the post-season. No one except those surrounding that head coach Steve Villbrandt.

After finishing second in Section Three and qualifying for the L-L League playoffs, the Pioneers continued with a home game in the opening round of the District Three Class 5A playoffs against Susquehannock. A game that looked to be pretty even on paper proved to be just as even on the court as the eighth and ninth seeds battled back-and-forth in a game ultimately decided in overtime and unfortunately favored the Warriors, 51-48.

L-S, despite having lost six of its last seven games (all but one of those against playoff bound squads) came out strong. Katie Ranck scored nine first quarter points and Anna Horner added a trey and L-S held a 12-8 lead. They picked up the pace in the second frame, pouring in 13 points and extending the advantage to 23-9 before settling for a 25-13 halftime lead. Horner was a perfect

6-for-6 from the stripe and finished with eight points in the frame to lead the charge.

The Warriors just could not get a bucket to fall and managed just five points in the quarter.

All that momentum, however, changed in the second half. The Warriors picked up the pace with full court pressure and started knocking down threes to get back in the game. They hit four in the third quarter and held L-S to just two field goals, an in the paint jumper by Ava Leonard (4 points) and a layup by Leigh Saurbaugh (5

points). In fact, back-to-back Warrior threes in the final minute knotted the score at 29-29.

“We have struggled through this last portion of the season in the second half,” said Villbrandt. “We didn’t handle their full court pressure very well and that let them back in the game.”

Horner hit a pair of treys in the fourth that kept L-S in front, both times by four points, but three straight turnovers turned the tide as Susquehannock tied the game at 39-39 on a pair of free throws and took the lead with 1:47 left.

Molly Gochnaur’s bucket in the paint tied the game again, but the Warriors answered.

After another L-S turnover, the visitors looked to be in control and called timeout with 24 seconds remaining. Then, unexpectedly, Ranck, who knocked down a gamehigh 19 points, picked off Susquehannock’s inbounds pass and tied the game on layup with 15 seconds remaining. The Warriors missed at the other end, sending the game into overtime.

Saurbaugh, with a layup, and Ranck’s two free throws gave L-S its last lead of the game, 47-45. Elana Snyder hit a pair of free throws and, after a L-S turnover, nailed a trey to put the visitors in front 48-47. Saurbaugh hit one of two from the stripe to tie it up at 48-48. The Warriors connected on two more free throws and after another L-S miss, added one more foul shot to decide the outcome.

“It was a heck of a game,” said Villbrandt. “The girls just work so hard. They never quit. And except for Katie Ranck, they all return next year.”

Horner backed Ranck with 17 points and hit all three of Lampeter’s three-pointers. The Pioneers were 11-of-18 from the foul line. Susquehannock finished with nine treys, seven in the second half.

for plays and audiences were smaller,” Ditzler said. “We thought it would be a great opportunity to bring kids in with such a classic piece, and parents can bring their kids to experience the arts.”

Refrigerated

The set for “Annie” provides a unique challenge for the crew, as it changes quickly and drastically; scenes take place anywhere from the streets of New York City to a dilapidated orphanage to the mansion of a billionaire. Ditzler noted that the production team has prepared for the show by renting and assembling different sets while keeping in mind the historical period in which the production is set. The cast of the show has been honing its impersonations of historic figures such as Franklin Delano Roosevelt for the play.

“When you do a classic piece set in a time period, it limits the choreography, but it identifies a style for the show,” Ditzler said. “It’s an opportunity to expose students to new shows, actors and movies that they can study for their roles.”

The cast and crew members of “Annie” remarked that they have been enjoying the rehearsals for the show. Due to the play’s origins as a comic strip, “Annie” uses a unique and upbeat style. “The show makes you feel good. We’re all humming the songs when we leave and are excited to come back to continue the process,” Ditzler said.

Tickets for “Annie” will be offered at a discounted price to students and senior citizens and may be purchased at the door or in advance at https://tinyurl.com/annielsa.

To provide entertainment between live auction sets, Santiago has lined up family Gospel folk groups from Ohio that he said are well-known in the Lancaster area. On Friday, groups include Dan and Amanda Esh, the Brandenberger Family, and Matt & Nimmie. The Brandenberger Family will play again on Saturday, along with Conrad Fisher, Broadway, and Endless Hallelujah Band. A candy drop is planned for late Saturday morning or early afternoon.

“One of our purposes is to let people know this is a unified effort of several minnistries wanting to help each other,” said Millette. “Right now, we are hoping individuals and businesses will stand with us as sponsors.” He added, “(We are looking for) people who find joy in helping those who can’t help themselves.” The Potter’s House provides a safe place for men and women to recover from addiction, experience Christ-centered discipleship, and embrace their God-given destiny. RTCM has a mission to change the lives of men with addictions by introducing them to Jesus and helping them process past trauma to deal with problems in a healthy way and become positive members of society. “We are there to give people a leg up with a desire that they become contributing members of the community,” said Millette. “We all benefit from that.”

Readers who are interested in sponsorships or making donations to the auction may call Gaston at 717-723-7253, Santiago at 717-304-3341, or Millette at 717-919-0316.
