She added, “One outgrowth of our event is that a church from Berks County was inspired to host their own event after having participated in our event. “I am thrilled to receive the PAECT Outstanding Teacher of the Year award,” said Allen. “I want to thank PAECT and those who nominated and supported my nomination for this recognition. I am fortunate to be able to work with colleagues who are innovative, creative, and collaborative as we support teaching and learning in the Hempfield School District. I am privileged to work with Hempfield staff and students integrating best practices in the classroom.” Allen acknowledged the Hempfield Education Foundation for its continued support. After graduating from Lampeter-Strasburg, Allen attended Millersville University to earn a bachelor’s degree in life and earth science and then went to Lebanon Valley College where she received a Master of Science Education. After student-teaching in Manheim Township School District, Allen worked as a longterm life science substitute teacher at Conestoga Valley School District. She came to Hempfield School District in August 1991 and taught life science at Centerville and Landisville middle schools for 16 years. It wasn’t until August 2007 that she moved to the high school as a Classrooms for the Future coach, which was a state grant through Gov. Ed Rendell’s administration to promote

the use of technology and 21st-century skills in education focused on the high school level. Allen’s father was a technology education teacher who taught print shop, so he had some of the first computers that did typesetting. Having that exposure to the printing process sparked Allen’s interest in technology. She noted that her background in science complements her current position as an instructional technology specialist because she does a lot of the same troubleshooting and problem solving as a scientist does. According to Allen, when she came to the high school, Jim Albright, who is currently retired, influenced her and provided her with resources. She acknowledged the Hempfield Education Foundation for its continued support. “A lot of times when I’m at a conference, the presenter will say that the smartest person is the room, meaning that the people that are in the room are the people that you pull knowledge from,” commented Allen. “The staff and the students at Hempfield make up my room, so they’re the people that I’m constantly learning from and collaborating with. My teachers and staff that I work with are my students as much as my students are my students.” To learn more about PAECT, visit www.paect.org.

Servant Stage Will Present “Songs For A New World” When audiences come to a performance of “Songs for a New World,” they can expect something a little different than a traditional musical. “It’s like paying for one show, but you’re actually seeing 15,” said Wally Calderon, who will direct the show for Servant Stage. As Calderon explained, “Songs For A New World” is a collection of songs that are intertwined.

“It’s a very interesting piece of theater,” he stated. “People are used to going to see a show where they are following one story in the same setting, but in this show, these are 15 different stories. Every song is its own story, its own character. They are all tied together through a couple of themes.” Those themes include the moment of decision, when people must choose to back away from something, move forward or

shift gears entirely, he said. “The decision might be about love, or it might be a decision about family or about life in general or about a career,” he remarked. “When I’m watching it, I find myself getting caught up and wanting to hear more from each song, but we have to go on to the next one.” Written by Tony Awardwinning composer Jason Robert Brown, the show was created in 1995, but it isn’t dated, Calderon said. “There are so many themes in this show that are still relevant, especially in today’s world,” he noted. Some songs feature heavier themes and others are more comedic. “All of the songs have aspects that are applicable to the lives of our audience,” Calderon explained. “The songs are a direct commentary to our audience, telling us that we all face these tough decisions and these moments when we make them, and we may think we’re the only ones going through that, but we’re not. We’re not alone.” “Songs for a New World” features four roles, but the Servant Stage production is double cast. The performers are Brittany Adair Beitzel, Cassandra Cummings, Joshua William Green, Paul Michael Hughes, Asia Littlejohn, Jenna Leigh Miller, Geoffery Morgan, and Ian SanchezHerasme. With a mix of solo numbers and ensemble pieces, the show is almost entirely sung through, with only small bits of transition between songs. “The music is beautiful and powerful, but

the show is not done too often partly because it’s so vocally demanding,” Calderon said. “We have the singers to do it well.” “Songs for a New World” will be performed at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Friday, March 11 through Sunday, March 27. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Fridays, at 3 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays and at 3 p.m. on Sundays. All performances are offered for pay-what-you-will admission as part of Servant Stage’s mission to make theater accessible to everyone, but reservations are required. To reserve tickets, visit https://servantstage.org or call 717-455-0255.

Since then, Hornberger has lived on the island of Hawaii, resided near the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, and settled among the thousands of acres of forest in the wilderness of the Adirondack Mountains. life has taken many paths, with painting coming and going during her travels. After moving to Lititz from a farm in Hawaii in 2017, Hornberger began painting more frequently again. “The past couple of years have been challenging regarding mental health, and painting has really been a saving grace,” stated Hornberger. “ When my insides are swirling and I can’t seem to settle my thoughts, I turn to the canvas and am able to express what I cannot put into words.” One of the most unique aspects of the creative process, according to Hornberger, is being able to express oneself without having to use words. Painting gives her a safe space to lose herself in creating while being totally present at the same time. Hornberger views the finished product as a snapshot of what was going on in her internal and external environments in that moment in time. Her newest collection of colorful abstract paintings, titled “Finding Home,” will be on display in the main gallery at Mulberry Art Studios during the month of April. The public is invited to meet the artist and view the artwork at the opening reception, which will be held on Friday, April 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the gallery, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. Digital images of artwork must be emailed by Sunday, April 10, to gallery curator Stephanie Paige Cole at Stephanie.MulberryArt@gmail .com with the word “PETS” and the artist’s name as the subject line. For more information, visit www.mulberry artstudios.com. For those who want to pursue art, Hornberger has some advice. “Don’t let fear or selfdoubt keep you from creating,” she said. “Don’t worry if it’s good or not. Just do it. If it makes your soul happy, just do it. And if people happen to like it, bonus. But creating from the heart is freedom. You can’t do it wrong when you are coming from your heart.”

Program On Louis Vierne Scheduled The Lancaster Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will offer a multimedia presentation and concert about the life and works of Louis Vierne at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, at the Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. Vierne was a composer, educator, and blind organist of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. The event will be narrated by Steve and Doris Nolt. Local organists will perform works by Vierne between narration, photos, and presentations. The public is invited to attend. There is a suggested donation for admission.
