There’s no business like show business

The Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts will present “Annie Get Your Gun” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 21, 22 and 23, at Lancaster Country Day School’s Gardner Theater, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster. Shows will begin at 7 p.m., and Saturday will include a matinee at 1:30 p.m. in addition to the evening performance.

“Annie Oakley is such a one-in-amillion character.”

Tickets for general admission and reserved seating are available to purchase online for a discounted price, and tickets will be sold at the door prior to each show. Children will receive a discounted rate for both general admission and reserved seating.

Director Brittany Beitzel’s decision to select “Annie Get Your Gun” as this year’s spring

musical was influenced by multiple factors. The play is a personal favorite of Beitzel’s, and she cites it as the main reason she decided to pursue theater professionally after seeing it for the first time at 13 years old. “I was just so inspired by the story, the sweeping music and the comedy,” Beitzel said. “I felt like it would be the perfect show for these kids to take on, and it also is a show that speaks a lot to some deeper meanings.”

“Annie Get Your Gun” was debuted on Broadway in 1946, featuring music and lyrics written by renowned composer Irving Berlin. The story is based on the life and exploits of Annie Oakley, a real-life sharpshooter who rose to fame in the late 19th century as a performer in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. Annie, played by Mary Frances Eschenwald of Ronks, is a rowdy and kind-hearted markswoman

In Dan Steinman’s office in Ephrata, there is a portable photo display called the Wall of Remembrance. The photos are of children who have died. The wall travels to BASIS (Brothers and Sisters in Support) events, and bereaved parents gather around it. “Every time we fold it up and take it (out), its getting fuller,” said Steinman, director of BASIS, who added that now the photos are put in a digital

format so that they run on a screen at the event. “Last year a dad found his son, and he took his wife over and another couple joined them and they talked. It just brings people together.”

The Wall of Remembrance will be on display at the annual BASIS Breakfast, scheduled to be held at Yoder’s Restaurant & Banquet Center, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Saturday, April 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year’s speaker Ron Schmidt, will speak on Finding Rest During

In 1863, German woodworker Michael Dentzel sent his 17-yearold son, Gustav, to open a cabinet store the United States. Gustav began crafting carousels, including one that was installed in Rocky Springs Park in Lancaster in 1899. As improvements were made to the park over the years, the carousel was enhanced as well; a building was constructed around the carousel, and it was upgraded with mechanisms that

run on electricity instead of steam. The attraction remained at the park until 1982, but few Lancaster County residents know what became of Gustav’s famous carousel since then.

The longer it remained at Rocky Springs Park, the more the carousel became intertwined with Lancaster’s history. In 1963, local residents began protesting at the park due to its segregated pool, and the attractions were closed to the public in 1968.

who learned to shoot as a child to provide for her family in rural Ohio. After defeating famous gunman Frank Butler, played by Jack Etter, Annie embarks on a journey to become one of the most legendary performers in American history.

As a young woman with humble origins, Annie faces many challenges as she climbs to stardom. The play incorporates themes such as humility, rivalry, selfless love and treating others with compassion as

Annie navigates the world of show business and defies the prejudices of her time.

“It’s an incredible story that I’m really passionate about,” Eschenwald said. “Annie Oakley is such a one-in-a-million character; she has a competitive, prideful side to her, but she also wears her heart on her sleeve and fights for equality and justice for others.” Eschenwald and Etter will star beside Brian Boyle as Buffalo Bill and Josiah Werner in the role of Charlie Davenport.

The cast of “Annie Get Your Gun” comprises homeschoolers and other students from school districts across Lancaster County.

The Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts draws students from across Lancaster County, many of whom are homeschooled.

This is the first year the academy will hold a show at

Gardner Theater, making “Annie Get Your Gun” one of its largest-scale productions to date.

Schmidt serves as the lead chaplain at Christ’s Home, Warminster and Paradise. He leads a team of seven chaplains for the organization, which ministers to disadvantaged children and senior adults. Schmidt chairs the board of Endure International, an organization working to share the Gospel in the Middle East and to aid persecuted Christians. Schmidt has also been an adjunct professor with the former Philadelphia Biblical University and a Bible conference speaker. He is also a bereaved parent.

Ron Schmidt, lead chaplain at Christ’s Home, Warminster and Paradise, will speak at the annual BASIS Breakfast.

Steinman first heard Schmidt speak at Harvey Cedars Bible Conference in New Jersey a few years ago. “(Schmidt’s) son had died,” recalled Steinman. “I liked the way he spoke.” Steinman returned to Harvey Cedars in the fall of 2023 to hear Schmidt again, and after that he contacted the chaplain about speaking at the BASIS breakfast.

Change of Pace South

announces new name, board of directors

Change of Pace South has moved into a new stage, establishing its own board of directors and adopting the name Oasis Women’s Ministry.

In 1974, Dona Fisher and the Friendship Foundation launched a weekly non-denominational women’s Bible study called Change of Pace. In 2000, a branch Bible study for women in southern Lancaster County was established as Change of Pace South by Carol Wever and Peggy Huber. Wever served as director until her death in 2019, and the director’s torch was passed to Jennifer Hatch.

The name Oasis was chosen because it reflects Change of Pace’s intention to offer a restful and refreshing pause on the journey of life. Oasis seeks to offer women an opportunity to enjoy fellowship, worship God, and study the Bible in a supportive and nurturing environment.

The new Oasis board includes Jade Brubaker, Peggy Huber, Deb Riddell, Cindy Riker, and Vicki Zurbrick. The board has been meeting regularly to complete the steps needed to form the nonprofit Oasis ministry and to carry on the mission and vision that began 23 years ago.

The Bible study will continue to meet at Providence Church, 269

Cinder Road, New Providence, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays throughout the school year.

The next session will begin on March 20 and conclude on May 1. Using the study guide “When You Pray,” attendees will examine six types of prayer in the Bible, with lessons taught by Kelly Minter, Jackie Hill Perry, Jen Wilkin, Jennifer Rothschild, Jada Edwards, and Kristi McClelland. This study aims to inspire prayerful conversations with God, whether alone or with others, and to demonstrate how prayer strengthens relationships and brings unity. Workbooks will be available to purchase at the first session.

In-person registration will begin on March 20 at 9 a.m., when fellowship time and breakfast refreshments will be available. The group will formally start at 9:30 a.m. with worship in music, followed by a 30-minute video teaching and then small group discussion for the remainder of the event. Oasis includes a children’s ministry, which provides supervision, snacks, crafts, and Bible stories for children of all ages. A freewill offering is received each week.

The agricultural workforce is shrinking and has been for some time. The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) estimates that roughly 2.4 million farm jobs need to be filled annually, but there has been a drastic decline in the number of workers each year.

The AFBF notes that more than 73% of farm workers are immigrants from South America and Mexico. The United States’ H-2A visa program, which allows employers who meet specific requirements to bring in foreign laborers for temporary work, has

increased the number of accepted applications for immigrants to 250,000, but this number is still just a drop in the bucket in terms of labor needs.

As more farm operators reach retirement age, fewer young farmers are replacing them, possibly because a career in this sector isn’t always easy or lucrative. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for every dollar spent on food, a farmer receives only 7.6 cents. Farmers were predicted to lose 9.7% of total net income in 2021. Working in agriculture can also mean volatile

pricing, high real estate and land costs, steep initial machinery investment costs, and physically demanding tasks.

Many people with knowledge of the industry indicate that sweeping changes are warranted. Ellen Poeschl, the project director for the National Association of Agricultural Educators’ Teach Ag campaign, said that a lack of agricultural education is contributing to the worker shortage. Increasing availability of agriculture education courses across the country could build interest in the industry. Connecting students to internships or mentors may help, too.

Another option is to rally for greater economic opportunities in agriculture. Those working in the industry may look for innovative ways to make the economic benefits more competitive to other industries, and improve working conditions and job flexibility. Agricultural industries currently average only 60% of what other industries offer in salaries. Farm wages have been rising due to the H-2A program, which requires farm worker pay to be higher than the state and federal minimum wage. Further change may be possible, but this may have to come at the federal level or be sparked by efforts on the part of agricultural advocacy groups.

Additional strategies farm operators may em ploy to combat shortages include integrating technology to reduce labor burdens, switching to crops that require fewer laborers, leasing portions of land to make extra money, and employing temporary guest workers. Worker shortages continue to be problematic for the agricultural industry, but a variety of tactics may be available to address the issue.

Slow-pitch

softball league seeks teams

The Lanco 70s Slow Pitch League is seeking teams and players for its upcoming season. The league is open to men who will turn 68 or older this year and women who will turn 60 or older this year.

Practices will be held in April, and games will start in May. Games will be played once a week; organizers have not yet decided whether games will be on Mondays or Wednesdays.

The league has five teams: one each in Ephrata, Elizabethtown and New Danville and two in Willow Street. Field slots, if needed, are open for new teams in Willow Street.

For more information, contact Marv Adams at daddysirme@ gmail.com or 717-368-3461.

Steinman said the event gives attendees plenty of time to converse with others who have experienced the grief of losing a child. “We start with a prayer, and we have the message,” he said. “We give (attendees) an opportunity to talk to other bereaved parents.” The breakfast is designed for bereaved parents or a parent and a support person.

Support is what BASIS is all about, and the organization hosts several groups around the county, including those that meet in the greater Akron, Mount Joy, Paradise, Strasburg, and Quarryville areas. The newest group meets the third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Handi-Vangelism offices,

3261 Rothsville Road, Akron.

Steinman explained that the group is for those who would rather not drive at night.

BASIS has recently begun producing quarterly podcasts, which can be found at www.hvmi.org/hopeingrief.

“People may not be sure whether to take part in a group or not,” explained Steinman, “but they hear (the podcast and) they may recognize how they feel and check the group out.”

For the past three years, Uncharted Lancaster has held an annual real-life treasure hunt involving hundreds of people that has given away $4,700 to a handful of participants while raising more than $10,000 for local nonprofits like the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County (HPT).

This year, the tradition will continue with the Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure. The treasure hunt will kick off on Saturday, April 6, promising a five-week expedition, weekly cash prizes and the chance to win a share of $3,250.

Players will explore Lancaster and Lebanon

counties over five weeks as they race to uncover the legendary Golden Osprey, a fictional treasure hidden more than two millennia ago by ancient Phoenician explorers who discovered the Susquehanna River. There will be rewards issued for first-, secondand third-place winners.

An honorable mention will go to the fourth-place team with the highest score on the leaderboard (and not among the first three Golden Osprey finders). All four teams will receive a full-size 3D printed commemorative Golden Osprey souvenir.

To play, participants must purchase a treasure diary; register a team beginning on Saturday, March 16; check Uncharted Lancaster’s website every Saturday at 9:30 a.m. for that week’s challenges; and solve the

weekly riddles and decipher the clues to unlock segments of the treasure’s GPS coordinates.

The Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure requires participants to utilize local history knowledge, puzzle-solving skills and the ability to navigate non-level terrain, making it a game of skill suitable for adventure enthusiasts of all ages.

Proceeds will benefit the HPT, with a portion from every treasure diary purchase going to the nonprofit. Funds going to HPT will contribute to its digital archiving project, which aims to scan the 160,000 artifact collection and preserve Lancaster County’s architectural heritage.

For more information and to purchase a treasure diary, visit www.uncharted lancaster.com. Weekly clues will begin on April 6.

more than a decade later, but attendance was heavily impacted by the nuclear accident at ThreeMile Island and a local polio outbreak. To ensure its safety, the carousel was removed from Rocky Springs in 1982. It was placed in Lake Lansing Park in Michigan the following year, where the carousel was active until the park’s closure in 1986. In 1989, the carousel was moved to Dollywood, an amusement park in Tennessee owned by country singer Dolly Parton. The carousel was rebranded as the Dollywood Dentzel Carousel, and it remained at Dollywood for nearly a decade. Finally, after being purchased by a group known as the Friends of the Rocky Springs Carousel in 1998, the historic ride returned to Lancaster, where it has hidden in storage ever since.

Despite the historical significance and rarity of the Rocky Springs Carousel, every attempt at restoring the Rocky Springs Carousel to its former glory and finding a new home for it has been unsuccessful. According to a 2020 census conducted by the National Carousel Association, the ride is one of 208 classic wood carousels in North America. Of these 208 antiques, only 18 were manufactured by the Dentzel Carousel Company.

In 2021, Willow Street resident Eileen Gregg published a book to chronicle the story of the famous attraction titled “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure: The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel.” The book includes the history of the Dentzel family and photos of the ride that have never been published before. On Jan. 29, 2024, Gregg organized the screening of the first half of a film at Willow Valley Communities that includes videos of the carousel in use during the ‘90s. The footage was taken by Robert Scuorzo of Henderson, N.C., who sent it to Gregg for safekeeping. Gregg plans to hold a viewing of the film’s second half in the near future.

“I am very fortunate to have the film,” Gregg said. “The first half of the film shows the carousel in operation, and some of the scenes are of the carousel’s final day of operation that took place at the end of the 1998 Christmas season.”

For more information or to find out when the next film screening will take place, search for “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure - The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel” on Facebook.
