Last spring, members of Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, applied for a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The grant provides funding for various programs that promote environmental sustainability, and the church hoped it would provide the necessary resources for a greening project conceived by congregation member Rhonda Miller. After receiving the grant in June 2023, Miller began the process of finding a contractor to complete the project, and
Ascension Lutheran officially partnered with Waxwing EcoWorks Co. last November. The church and its contractor are breaking ground for the project on Wednesday, March 20.
“Some time ago, I had this idea about making our property more sustainable as a way for us to be better stewards of the land in our possession,” Miller said. “We hope this is a launching point for other things we’d like to do.”
The goal of Miller’s project is to make several improvements to Ascension Lutheran’s property, which will include conservational landscaping, enhancing native meadows and strengthening
nearby wildlife habitats. The project will also involve remediating the mowed lawn and transforming parts of the property into areas that are rife with native plants, which Miller hopes will become a haven for pollinators and migrating birds.
In addition to making Ascension Lutheran Church a wildlife-friendly zone, the greening project’s secondary goal is to reduce the amount of stormwater runoff that enters a creek near the church’s property. Miller has partnered with Stroud Water Research Center to plant an abundance of trees and shrubs on the borders of the church’s property to
Over the past seven decades, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has grown from one couple producing one paper to a company that employs 150 people, distributes 16 community newspapers and multiple specialty publications to close to 200,000 people, and provides printing services for numerous clients. Although the scope of
the business has changed, one thing has remained constant: community.
“We want to make that connection to our local merchants and to our community members,” said Charlie Engle, company president.
As EPC marks 70 years in business this year, Charlie and his daughter Jocelyn Engle looked back on what started in 1954 in the basement of Alvin and

around the globe.

Sacred Heart Preschool in Lancaster held Pirate Day on Feb. 23, complete with a surprise treasure map. The children followed the treasure map’s clues throughout the school, leading them to cross a bridge over
shark-infested waters, balance on stepping stones between the jaws of hungry crocodiles, pass a lava-oozing volcano, and other adventures. When they reached the X on the treasure map, they found Mr. X on a treasure chest
filled with jewels.

Piano students of Carole A. Bubacz and flute students of Tess Sult performed in a recital at Christ Church United Church of Christ in Elizabethtown on Feb. 18. The program included religious, classical, and popular music.
Playing solos were Lindsey Shaud, Dominic Juarbe, Jhasnielle Casseus, Lucy Downing, Stewart Carter, and Sarah Heinz. A duet for
one piano four hands was performed by Lindsey and Dominic. Sult played two movements from Partita in A Minor for unaccompanied flute by J.S. Bach.
Using both the piano and a professional model keyboard, Sarah and Bubacz performed “Spiritoso” from Clementi’s Sonatina Opus 36 No. 3 with a second piano part written by Catherine McMichael.
minimum financial donation to FMSC. Each minimum donation will cover the cost of more than 200 meals, which is the average amount of food one volunteer packs during a shift. In addition to the financial donation, FMSC invites participants to bring a nonperishable food item on the day of their chosen shift. Requested food donations include peanut butter, rice, pasta and lowsugar breakfast cereal, and FMSC will distribute all donations to the Lancaster County Food Hub in Lancaster city.
Lancaster County FMSC MobilePack chairperson
Lora Magnus Wenger first learned about the organization during a mission trip she took to Haiti in 2013. Wenger was volunteering with nonprofit organization Mission of Hope, which partnered with Haitian orphanages, schools and nonprofits to distribute FMSC meals to roughly 50,000 children per day. Upon returning to the United States, Wenger said she was inspired to research the organization, and she signed up for an FMSC MobilePack event in New Jersey. “I was very impressed by the organization and its goals and methods,” Wenger added. “I decided that our community could do this too; I came back and talked to my church about it, and we hosted our first event the following year.”
Since the first MobilePack event at Willow Street Mennonite Church, volunteers have packed and paid for more than 2 million meals for communities around the globe.
During the event, volunteers will pack boxes of food that will be distributed to communities around the globe.
Although the goal of the event has remained the same more than a decade later, certain changes have been made over the years. Due to inflation, the cost of each meal has slightly increased, and hand-washing stations have been made available during shifts in recent years to meet government safety regulations. A few years ago, FMSC began accepting donations for the Lancaster County Food Hub to battle food insecurity in the local community in addition to efforts in other countries.
“Living in the United States, we are incredibly blessed,” Wenger said. “I think it is important for us to not only recognize how blessed we are but to be willing to share our blessings with others. It is also a good opportunity for young people down to age 5 to be involved in sharing and caring for others.”

Touchstone Foundation has announced a program expansion, increasing access to mental health care for young people and their families through its Mental Health Access Assistance program. The foundation has increased the amount of money it will provide toward the copay or deductible for therapy or counseling with a licensed mental health provider.
Eligible individuals are Lancaster County residents who are birth to age 25 or are parents or guardians of dependent children birth to age 25. To qualify for the program, the household income may not exceed 250% of the Federal Poverty Level, meaning $75,000 per year for a family of four or $36,450 for a single person. Participants must have commercial insurance such as Pennie and re-enroll annually.
Touchstone Foundation can help clients find a local mental health provider. A partnership with the Pennsylvania Health Access Network supports a health navigator for Lancaster County families and young people who have experienced challenges enrolling in health insurance. Qualified applicants with an existing provider can request that their provider contact Touchstone Foundation to sign up. The mental health care provider bills the patient’s insurance and sends an invoice to Touchstone Foundation for the remaining balance.
In 2023, this program supported more than 1,500 visits to a licensed mental health provider for therapy or counseling. More than 70 local mental health agencies and practices currently participate in this program.
On average, clients visit their mental health provider twice per month during the year. Clients may visit their mental health provider as often as necessary, with no limit to the number of visits per year.
Patients can apply online at https://touchstonefound .org/accessassistance/. The online portal is encrypted and confidential. The site also includes translation capabilities so that the application is available in many languages. Interested mental health providers may also enroll at the aforementioned website.
This program is made possible by donors and grants from the Steinman Foundation and the City Limits Foundation.

Pauline Engle’s Mount Joy home.
“My dad bought his own little press and put it in our basement,” Charlie said of Alvin. “He was working full time in the printing business, but he always wanted to do his own thing.”
In 1959, EPC purchased its first community publication, the Merchandiser, and by 1960, Alvin had quit his day job to focus on the new business full time. It soon became a family enterprise, with Alvin and Pauline selling ads while their children - Charlie, Audrey, and Denny - helped where they could.
Charlie recalled the tedious task of cutting and hand-gluing address labels on the paper as well as folding each of the newspapers by hand. When Alvin died unexpectedly in 1971, the family faced a decision.
“My mother came to us and said, ‘There are some people who are interested in buying the business,’” Charlie recalled. “The three children all agreed, and we all said no to selling. We knew we could do this.”
Charlie became company president, with Denny serving as vice president, positions both men still hold today. Audrey also dedicated herself to the company before her death in 2018. Pauline continued to work for EPC well into her 70s. She passed away in 2020. Today, there are also four members of the third generation of Engles at EPC, with several fourth-generation family members helping out sporadically.
Outside printing is the bread and butter of the business, with production running 24 hours a day, five days a week. Along with continuing to publish the Merchandiser and other community papers, including the Pennysaver, Advertiser, and Community Courier, EPC produces local Chamber guides, Farm Show premium books and more.
Seventy years of business has included ups and downs for the company, Charlie said. Challenges have ranged from competition to rising costs to navigating the pandemic. Through it all, EPC has remained focused on its original mission: serving the community.
“Our family and the company have been blessed,” Charlie said. “Since we’ve been blessed, we want to bless others. We started a foundation in the early ‘90s, and that supports a variety of local programs.”
EPC publications focus on telling the good news happening at nonprofit organizations, schools and local businesses, and that’s more important than ever, Jocelyn said.
“We are surrounded by bad news,” she said. “Every time we turn on the TV, every time we open our phone, it’s upsetting. It brings us down. There are so many good things happening in our community, and we want to shine a light on them.”
Asked about the secret to EPC’s longevity, Charlie didn’t hesitate to answer.
“We’ve had good people,” he said simply. “We have so many longtime employees,
some who have been here for 35 or 40 years.”
As for the next 70 years, Charlie and Jocelyn envision a bright future. The company is transitioning into providing digital solutions for clients, while continuing to support local businesses and tell positive stories through its community newspapers and online at www.townlively.com.
“I love the legacy my grandfather started,” Jocelyn said. “I never met him, but I know his goal and his mission was to support the community, and we won’t lose that connection to the community. We will continue to be hyperlocal, providing our advertisers with options to target just their region and news specifically about your school district and local community. We’re focused on right here, where we live, and all the good things that are happening.”
