The old world of medicine
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDIn the 21st century, many parts of the world have access to a level of medical treatment that was once thought to be in the realm of science fiction. The evolution of emergency treatments, dental care and various other fields of medicine has made procedures such as organ transplants and precise surgeries more accessible to the modern person. Even over-the-counter medications have advanced to make several common ailments a memory of the past, making it easy to forget that modern medicine is a relatively new concept.
To shed light on the medical techniques of a different age, Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, will host an educational event at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, in the Rock Ford Barn. Thomas Plott, who serves as the manager of character interpretation at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, will give a presentation on the medical practices used during the Revolutionary War. During the event, Plott will interpret James Craik, the first Physician General of the United States and a personal friend of George Washington’s. Tickets are available to purchase online at https://tinyurl.com/ revwarmedicine.
While he plays the part of Craik, Plott will discuss the general approach to medical care used in the 18th century,
including the types of care that soldiers received during the American Revolution and common medical instruments. Plott will also share information about Craik’s role as physician general, which served as the precursor to the position of surgeon general. Plott will don a period-accurate costume and an accent to give his presentation as the Scottish doctor.
“The evolution of medicine took a lot of time, and the real changes started to be made during the time of the Revolutionary War,” Plott said. “People were starting to realize the body is not based on
humors, which was a huge part of medicine all the way back to ancient Greek and Roman times.”
Previously, medical practitioners believed that four bodily fluids known as humors were responsible for mood and physical health. Many ailments were attributed to an imbalance of the humors, and techniques such as bloodletting were used in an attempt to cure diseases and injuries. “In the 18th century, they started to realize blood circulates through the body, and doctors began to view the heart as a pump,” Plott added.
Plott said the presentation will be more of an interactive
performance than a lecture, and it will include opportunities for audience members to participate in activities and ask questions. Plott will also share information on medical instruments used at the time. “A lot of people guess what they’re used for, and a lot of times their ideas are more barbaric than reality,” said Plott. “Amazingly, many of these instruments are still used today.”
Historic Rock Ford will open a focused exhibit on death and mourning in the 18th and 19th centuries on Tuesday, April 2. For more information, visit www .historicrockford.org.
Lancaster Moves will hold community fitness sessions
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDRoutine exercise is widely regarded as one of the best ways for people to stay healthy year-round. In addition to its many physical benefits, an active lifestyle and outdoor activities are effective ways for individuals to strengthen both their mood and their immune system. Lancaster Moves, an outdoor fitness program created by Samantha and Andrew Gerberich of Willow Street, seeks to offer Lancaster County residents an opportunity to reap the rewards of outdoor exercise while simultaneously bringing the community closer together.
“You can’t replace getting together with people and being outdoors,” Samantha said. “Fresh air has so many benefits: boosting energy and mood, decreasing stress and getting Vitamin D from the sun.”
Lancaster Moves will launch its first series of events on Saturday, April 6, at Strasburg Jaycee Park, 218B Miller St. The kickoff will begin at 9 a.m., and it will include an hour of cardio exercises and bodyweight workouts designed to suit participants of all fitness levels. DAY CAMP
A gift of grace
BY ANN MEAD ASHSpring has Sprung and the Savings are in Full Bloom!
Spring has Sprung and the Savings are in Full Bloom!
On a Saturday in July of 2020, Tim Rogers learned online that his brother-inlaw, Justo Smoker, had been arrested for the kidnapping of Linda Stoltzfoos, a young Amish woman abducted in Bird-in-Hand and later murdered.
Tim and his daughter, Megan Shertzer, who was the only other family member at home, were reeling from the shock of the news when the doorbell rang. “My first thought was that I didn’t want to go to the door,” recalled Tim. Waiting on the front step was an Amish neighbor who had heard the news and brought her family along with flowers and vegetables from her garden.
The woman had been the teacher in the Nickel Mines Schoolhouse on the day of that tragedy in 2008. “She said, ‘I want you to know that there’s hope and God will take care of you,’” Tim reported. “We could see the tears in her eyes, and they were in mine too,” he noted, adding, “(That she would be) the person at the door offering what she offered,” recalled Tim. “It was simple, but the gift of presence in that space was really powerful.”
That day was the beginning of a journey that would show the Rogers family the depth of grace to be offered by the family members of Linda Stoltzfoos and the greater community. Those experiences would lead both Tim and Megan to begin
journaling - recording events as well as their emotional reactions and the questions the situation forced them to examine. The result of those writings is “Beechdale Road,” a self-published book that represents Tim and Megan’s goal to share with others the hope and mercy they found
in the aftermath of a terrible crime. Because Stoltzfoos was an aide to children with special needs in a one-room schoolhouse, part of the proceeds from the sale of “Beechdale Road” will help support Amish special education in Lancaster County.

Lancaster Moves from pg 1
April sessions will be free to attend.
Samantha and Andrew’s decision to create Lancaster Moves was partially influenced by the couple’s shared passion for working out. Samantha works full time as a nurse, and Andrew’s career is in the accounting world; in their free time, the husband and wife participate in fitness programs at their local gym. Since their gym primarily offers indoor activities, Samantha and Andrew often workout in their own backyard, and they started to consider ways they could establish a consistent program for the whole community. In addition to their active lifestyle, Samantha and Andrew both have educational backgrounds in fitness; Samantha has an undergraduate degree in kinesiology, and Andrew
studied sports management in college. Andrew also has several years of experience as both an athlete and a coach.
Samantha and Andrew were also inspired to create Lancaster Moves as a way to honor Andrew’s late grandfather, Charles Gerberich Sr. Charles joined the Lebanon YMCA through its scholarship program in 1937, and he actively volunteered to teach afterschool programs there for many years. Charles also frequently covered membership fees for children whose families could not afford them. Samantha and Andrew plan to donate 10% of all profits from future Lancaster Moves programs to YMCA youth scholarship funds. “Andrew has this vision to give back, and we’re hoping to carry on his father’s legacy,” Samantha said. “Our goal is to continue to offer outdoor sessions at different locations throughout the county.”
Beechdale from pg 10
For Megan, the crime committed by someone she knew and cared for brought her face-to-face with questions she never anticipated having to answer. “(Justo) was a fun uncle,” she recalled. “One of the biggest things I have wrestled with is what to do when someone has done such a horrific, evil thing when that’s not who you know them to be.” Megan pointed to memories of an uncle she knew to be silly, safe, funny, caring, and supportive.
“What do you do with that when we often want to define people as good or bad?” she asked. “What do you do when they’re both?” What Megan learned through the experience is that “we are all both good and bad.” “It’s easy to forget that because then it affects us and it’s about us
and not just those bad people out there who do bad things. It was a battle for me to learn (that).”
After Tim and Megan each discovered that the other was recording events and feelings, they began sharing their writings with each other. They discussed working together on a project in an open-ended manner. “It was never, ‘We are going to write a book and this is how we’re going to do it, and it will be done by this time,’” said Megan.
One day Tim told a therapist who was helping the family deal with the situation about the understanding he and his family had received in the wake of the tragedy. “I shared a vignette of a moment that had happened with the Amish community,”

recalled Tim. “(The therapist said), ‘That is so powerful; you need to write this down.’”
That conversation led to Tim and Megan beginning to put their writings into order. “We thought there was enough that could be helpful to put out to people,” said Tim. “The story for us is the grace of the Amish community and the mercy they offered to us in
the middle of such a terrible tragedy. It was such a gift to us,” he said.
“Beechdale Road” will be available at the Gordonville Book Store and all Good’s Store locations beginning on Monday, April 1. More information about the book, including upcoming speaking engagements, may be found at www.beechdaleroad.com.
