Book’s ballfields

OnMarch 4, the Strasburg Playground Association dedicated two baseball fields at Strasburg’s community park to its president, Charles Book. The organization presented Book with a formal congratulation written by Senator Scott Martin and expressed its gratitude for the decades of service Book has provided to the Strasburg community. On March 14, Strasburg Borough officially named May 24, Book’s birthday, Charlie Book Day. Book will celebrate his 91st birthday this year.

Book has lived in Strasburg for his entire life and has served the Playground Association for over 77 years, having first become involved with the organization when he was 14 years old. Book’s father owned a greenhouse in town where the family raised flowers. After coming home from school and working at the greenhouse, Book would ride his father’s tractor to the nearby baseball field to prepare it for big-league games. He never stopped caring for

the field; you can still find Book today prepping the lawn for local schools’ teams with the same attention he gave when it was used by the big-leaguers. The community park is open for public use and is primarily utilized by the Strasburg Willow Street Baseball Softball Association for team practices.

Book has served as the Playground Association’s president for over 35 years now, and he was instrumental in making improvements to the park. Over the years, the property has been upgraded to include a second field and the Tinney Pavilion, and the park is lined with trees that Book planted himself. “He’s such an inspiration. He’s all about getting things done and getting them done right,” said David Esh, vice president of the Strasburg Playground Association. “His care is evident when you look at the property; everything is in place and well maintained.”

Before Esh became the secretary for the organization 20 years ago, it was just Book and Jim Johnson. The pair worked together to ensure the upkeep of the 4-acre property for

many years, regularly completing the 3 hour-long task of mowing the grass. Over the course of the last two years, the Strasburg Playground Association has increased the size of its roster to welcome several members of the community who share Book’s dedication for maintaining the fields. Along with the new members have come new ideas and plans to improve the park, such as bathroom renovations that the association hopes to complete in the near future.

“I just feel that the park is a necessity for the children in our community,” Esh said. “Just yesterday I saw a whole group of kids and parents out there practicing ball. It gives me great pleasure to give these kids an outlet.” Esh’s own son used to play ball on the property, and Book’s daughters used to practice regularly on the fields that are now dedicated to their father.

The Strasburg Playground Association raises funds by making the Tinney Pavilion available to rent for private events. For more information, contact the Strasburg Borough at 717-687-7732.

The Rough Riders 4-H Club of Lancaster will host a fundraiser meal on Saturday, April 1, at Lampeter Fire Company, 851 Village Road, Lampeter. Preordered meals may be picked up beginning at 10 a.m., and food will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis after noon via a drive-through. The Rough Riders Club primarily serves children in the Southern End, and the money raised from the sale will help to cover the expenses of the club’s activities.

The meal will have a set cost per person and include a barbecue halfchicken, chips, a roll, applesauce, water and a dessert. The chicken will be prepared by the family members of group leader Zoe Lanids and club member Madison Landis, who use a homemade recipe. Members of the club will pack the meals and distribute them to the fundraiser’s supporters.

The club’s goal is to help its members learn more about horses by exploring riding techniques, equine health and important information about owning a horse. Members gather on the first Thursday of each month for a business meeting and on the third Thursday of each month for a workshop at Refton Brethren in Christ Church. During meetings, members offer presentations and direct lessons on a variety of topics. In addition to their meetings, Rough Riders Club members frequently attend equestrian events together, such as horse shows, trail rides and riding clinics.

Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation announced on March 7 that Poppy, a rescued groundhog and animal ambassador for the organization, had passed away. Acorn Acres will host a memorial for Poppy on Saturday, April 1, at Jack’s Family Tavern & Restaurant, 15 S. Prince St., Millersville. The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. and will include light refreshments, children’s activities, cornhole and a silent auction. Although the event will be free, Acorn Acres asks attendees to consider making a donation, which will fund the groundhog caging at its facility.

Upon receiving the news of Poppy’s passing, several members of the community reached out to Acorn Acres’ founder, Betsy Shenk, to ask her if she would host a memorial. Shenk had originally planned to hold a baby shower-like event on April 1 to collect supplies for the rehab, as most wild animals begin raising their offspring during this time of year. April 1 would have been Poppy’s fourth birthday, so Shenk decided to transform the event into a way to honor her memory and to provide the community with a way to benefit the other groundhogs at Acorn Acres. Poppy memorial

Acorn Acres will erect housing for its groundhogs with a plaque that reads “The House That Poppy Built.” “It’s a way for us to remember her and to celebrate the incredible life of a little groundhog,” Shenk said. “This way, every little groundhog that goes through that house will benefit from Poppy.”

Poppy came into Shenk’s care in May 2019, after she was found without a mother by a resident of Conestoga. The rehab that initially took Poppy in was having difficulty getting her to eat and transferred her to Shenk’s care, as Shenk specializes in rehabilitating rodents. Soon after, Shenk realized that the issue was caused by a malocclusion, a birth defect resulting in crooked teeth. Since groundhogs’ teeth grow perpetually and rely on the animal wearing them down, rodents with malocclusion that are unable to manage the length of their teeth are at risk of fatal health problems. Shenk only had three options: to euthanize Poppy, put her under anesthesia and

SINGING SPRING

trim her teeth every 10 days or remove her teeth altogether. Shenk decided to remove Poppy’s teeth and train her as an animal ambassador, as she was unable to be released back into the wild.

Since becoming an ambassador for Acorn Acres, Poppy achieved remarkable feats for a groundhog, including starring in an NFL championship commercial in 2020 alongside Bill Murray. Poppy accompanied Shenk to dozens of events and animal rehabilitation centers to help educate thousands of people on groundhogs and the important roles they play in the ecosystem. Shenk estimated that Poppy helped to educate nearly 12,000 people during her time as an ambassador.

“I think one of the biggest things she did was make people smile during a difficult time,” Shenk said. “I would see people looking at this beautiful little creature and smiling behind their masks. As much as this is going to tear our hearts out, I think the community needs this opportunity to grieve and celebrate her.”

Pioneer swimmers compete in PIAA Championships

The Lampeter-Strasburg swimmers officially ended its season at the PIAA Swimming Championships held at the Kinney Natatorium on the campus of Bucknell University on Thursday, March 16.

The Pioneers qualified in two relays and three individual events. Zara Paisley topped the chart as the busiest swimmer at states. She was seeded 17th in the 100

freestyle and finished in 17th place. She also finished 27th in the 50 free and anchored both qualifying relays.

Paisley teamed with Krista Lambert, Ashley Prouse and Kylie Gerhardt in the 200 free. They matched their 21st seeding position. She also joined Prouse, Madelyn Juba and Gerhardt in the 400 free. They were seeded 27th and moved into 25th place.

Grace Schonour was the

alternate.

Also swimming individually was Gerhardt who settled for 27th place in the 100 backstroke, improving two places from her seeding position.

“All six girls represented Lampeter-Strasburg High School in such an amazing way, from competitive swims to how they carried themselves on deck and around others,” said head coach Kylie Hearn. “This was the most amount of

events L-S has qualified for in school history.”

T E N N I S

Despite graduating three of their top six from last year, head coach Mark Trach expects the Pioneers to be in the top two of Section Two.

“Joe Fitzgerald has moved up all the way to No. 1 in challenge matches, but he has very little experience,” noted Trach. “The Teaman brothers (Cole and Spencer) along with Kyle Pawson are

starters from last year. And our No. 3 doubles team of Justin Gouger and Kenny Finn have started great so far this year.”

The Pioneers opened with a 4-3 thriller over CV on Monday, March 20 and earned a 6-1 final over Manheim Central just two days later. The Teaman brothers, along with Gouger and Finn gave L-S a 2-1 lead over CV after doubles play.

Spencer Teaman and Pawson wrapped up the win

with straight set singles wins.

It was their second 4-3 victory as the Pioneers edged Donegal in their season-opener on March 16.

L-S made short work of the Barons, sweeping doubles play, including a tight 8-5 win by Fitzgerald and Pawson, and then winning three singles matches with the Teaman brothers and Pawson yielding just four games in the straight set wins.

The Rough Riders Club is for youths between the ages of 5 to 18. Zoe, who is 20, participated as a member of the club for six years and became a group leader once she aged out of the program. Although younger club members are not able to participate in some of the activities, the organization provides alternatives to ensure every member can remain engaged, such as the Clover Bud program for children ages 5 to 7.

“I love the whole atmosphere of the club. It helped me to become more confident with myself,” Zoe said. “I wanted to stay involved to help other kids acquire that as well, and it’s an awesome way to keep up with riding.”

Zoe began taking riding lessons when she was 10 and joined the club shortly after. Madison became involved by proximity, attending meetings and learning more about horses from her sister. Now that Madison is a member herself, she said that she’s started to enjoy riding more and improve her skills. “It was really satisfying to be able to do the things I wanted to and grow my confidence with my horse,” Madison said.

The Rough Riders Club also accepts members who do not own a horse. If one of the club’s activities involves a horse, such as a clinic or trail ride, it will often provide a horse for members without one of their own.
