Sunny Day Camp To Shine Light On Law Enforcement BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Lampeter-Strasburg High School students in Todd Garber’s Design Engineer II class affixed laser-cut logos and patterns to cornhole boards that were used at this year’s Mini-THON event.
Students Design A-maize-ing Cornhole Boards ince its founding in 1972, Four Diamonds has supported more than 4,800 pediatric cancer patients and their families. The organization aims to provide children with the best medical care at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and fund research to develop treatments and cures for other children around the world. One of the ways Four Diamonds raises funds to support its mission is through Mini-THON, a studentrun philanthropy. It’s an annual fundraiser where students must stay awake and stand for several hours to raise money to help conquer childhood cancer. As stated on www.thon.org, “Our mission is to provide emotional and financial support, spread awareness, and ensure funding for critical research - all in pursuit of a cure.” The motto of Mini-THON is “FTK” because everything the students do during Mini-THON is “For The Kids.”

I think it was just a really great time for everyone to come together.” Garber emphasized that LSHS staff members promote student involvement in Mini-THON and that Lindsay Shehan and Adam Titter co-advisine the event. When Sgt. Samantha Minnucci became the director of Camp Cadet of Chester County in 2014, her youngest brother, Gabriel Minnucci, was eager to help her set up for the event. After Camp Cadet ended, Gabriel couldn’t stop asking his sister about the program and noting how he wanted to enroll in the camp one day. However, Samantha knew that wouldn’t be possible because Gabriel has special needs and is over the age limit. As a result, she decided to create a program so that her brother could learn about the law enforcement agencies that serve the local community. “Gabriel has an amazing personality and lights up any room when he walks into it,” said Samantha. “He has the biggest heart and has always been my No. 1 fan in my career choice.”

Founded in 2016, Sunny Day Camp is a one-day event where individuals of all ages with special needs and/or disabilities can develop friendships with first responders. Sunny Day formed on the foundation of Camp Cadet of Chester County and has since then been adopted by several Camp Cadet programs across the state, including Camp Cadet of Lancaster County. “This program also gives our troopers the opportunity to learn more about the special needs communities we serve,” commented Pennsylvania State Trooper Kelly Osborne. This year’s Sunny Day Camp hosted by Camp Cadet of Lancaster County will take place on Saturday, May 14, at Lafayette Fire Company, 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster. Registration will open at 9 a.m., and the event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program is open to people of all ages who live in Lancaster County. The rain-or-shine event will feature static displays of and demonstrations from the canine unit, the bomb squad, SERT, an aviation-rescue helicopter, police vehicles, and emergency equipment. A free lunch will be provided to all attendees, and there will be games, music, and dancing. The camp will conclude with a formal
graduation ceremony where participants will receive a certificate, a Sunny Day T-shirt, and a name tag with their photo. Preregistration is required for participants and accompanying family members and caregivers, and it must be completed by Friday, April 29. To preregister, visit http:// campcadetoflancastercounty .com/sunny-day-camp/. For more information, email Osborne at kosbornefi@pa.gov. Lancaster County’s weeklong 2022 Camp Cadet pro-
gram will run from Sunday, Aug. 14, to Friday, Aug. 19. Registration, which will close on Friday, April 15, is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 14. “We changed the age just for this year to give the kids who may have aged out the opportunity to attend,” explained Osborne. The program will be held at Camp John H. Ware, 239 Jubilee Road, Peach Bottom. To learn more, visit http://campcadetof lancastercounty.com/cadet -info/registration/.

There is power in a pair of pants, strength in a shirt and joy in a jacket. Over the past 50 years, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) has provided financial support around the world through its MCC Thrift shop network. To date, MCC Thrift shops have contributed more than $250 million to help people in need. The first MCC Thrift shop opened in 1972 in Manitoba, Canada. Since then, the network has expanded to more than 85 stores across Canada and the United States. In Lancaster County and just outside the county, there are seven MCC Thrift shops: Columbia Re-Uzit Shop, Country Gift & Thrift Shoppe in Gap, Main Street Closet in Willow Street, Mount Joy Gift & Thrift, ReUzit on State in Ephrata, Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland
and Morgantown ReUzit Shoppe. Last year, these stores raised more than $1.6 million for MCC’s ministries. “The first MCC Thrift shop to open in Lancaster County was the Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland in 1976,” said Roland Anye, thrift shop coordinator for MCC East Coast. “Mount Joy Gift & Thrift and Columbia ReUzit Shop have been operational since 1977 and 1978 respectively.” As Anye explained, shopping at an MCC Thrift store benefits both the buyer and the recipient of MCC funds. Shoppers can pick up clothing, housewares and furniture for a bargain, while their purchases provide support on a global scale. After a minimal portion of the proceeds is used to keep the stores in operation, most of the money raised is donated to MCC. “Donations from the thrift
shops are designated to ‘where needed most,’” Anye said, explaining that the funds are used to support domestic and international work of MCC. MCC partners with other organizations to provide care kits to prisoners, agriculture education to farmers and peaceful conflict resolution education, as well as many other initiatives in the more than 40 countries where MCC works, Anye noted. Deb King, national thrift shop coordinator for MCC U.S., emphasized that shopping at MCC Thrift shops can also have a positive impact on the environment by reducing waste and supporting climate sustainability. “By reducing the number of new items they purchase, shoppers can have a positive impact on the environment, keep clothing out of landfills and reduce the excess use of resources needed to
make new clothing,” she said. To help celebrate MCC Thrift’s 50th anniversary, the organization is holding the Thifty 50 Challenge, said Laura Pauls-Thomas, communications and donor relations associate for MCC East Coast. “Sign up to receive a weekly sustainability challenge that helps our planet,” she explained, adding that participants will also have a chance to win an MCC Thrift gift card each week. Visit https://thrift.mcc.org/50/ challenge to sign up. “When I had small children, I frequented thrift shops and yard sales because it was the only option that fit into our budget,” said King. “While that is still the case for many families, I am encouraged to see individuals who have disposable income choosing to shop at thrift shops. … Thrifting is now practiced by people of all ages and income levels.”

Annie Bailey’s Irish Pub, 28-30 E. King St., Lancaster, will host a St. Baldrick’s Foundation signature head-shaving event on Saturday, April 9, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Headshaving will begin at 1 p.m. More than 50 participants have registered to shave their head to support the foundation’s mission to fund research to find cures and better treatments for kids with cancer. The event’s goal is to raise $100,000 for the cause. For more information, visit https://stbaldricks.org/events /baileys2022.
Speaking about the book and the mission to restore the merry-go-round, Gregg noted, “The final chapter is called ‘The Challenge Presented by the Rocky Springs Carousel.’ We have a goal to see this beautiful carousel operating once again in its home area.” More information about the book may be found by searching for “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure - The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel” on Facebook.

On March 26, the Lititz Historical Foundation treated area residents to a presentation dedicated to the Rocky Springs Park Carousel. Eileen Gregg, author of “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure: The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel,” and two invited guests visited the Lititz Public Library to speak about the history of the carousel and efforts to resurrect the merry-go-round in a Lancaster location. Rocky Springs Park was a fixture in Lancaster from 1899 to 1968. Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation, welcomed Gregg, who said she was happy to see interest in the carousel. “This is an unusual kind of history book,” Gregg began, noting that she sees the work as a story that needed to be written while people who have memories of Rocky Springs Park are still living. To make the presentation interactive, Gregg asked who had visited the park, ridden on the rides, or met their spouse near the carousel. She noted that the book contains a chapter dedicated to a love story of a couple that met at the carousel. Gregg said that the book includes more than 230 pages, 52 chapters, and 122 photos - 112 of them in color. She noted that the book features before and after restoration pictures of
12 of the merry-go-round’s animals. The six sections of the book cover the history of the carousel, which was placed near the beach in Rocky Springs Park in 1899. The carousel was built by the Dentzel family, which had originally begun making carousels in Germany. During its time at Rocky Springs, the carousel converted from steam to electricity and was sold to Joseph Figari. The park closed in 1968 and reopened briefly in 1979. In 1983, carousel owners Kim Figari and husband Tom Wolf moved the carousel to Lake Lansing Park in Michigan, where it remained until it moved to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., in 1989. In 1999, the carousel was transported to Lancaster by volunteers and purchased by the nonprofit Rocky Springs Carousel Association. “The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel is a national treasure,” said Gregg, who noted that other chapters focus on the carousel animals, the organ, catching the brass ring, and Tom Wolf’s 20-year history with the ride. Guest speaker Noreen Sweeney told the group how she and her late husband, Mike, visited Dollywood in the fall of 1998, where they met with Kim and Tom. Several months later, Tom visited the Sweeneys to say that the carousel was leaving Dollywood and that he wanted it to return to Lancaster. Mike

Lancaster Mennonite School (LM) announced that the former Mennonite Sports Organization (MSO) will get a facelift and restructure its offerings. The youth sports program operated by the school changed its name to Lancaster Mennonite Youth Athletics (LMYA). The name change is a signal to parents, students, and the community of how the program is expanding and realigning focus. While the mission remains to offer Christ-centered youth sports programs that transform stu-
dent-athletes to grow in character and skill during their pre-middle school and high school years, there is now an increased emphasis on adding competitive offerings for older youths to prepare them for participating in LM’s competitive middle school and high school sports teams. Currently, LMYA has several youth sports offerings. They include soccer, field hockey, and basketball for kindergarten to sixth grade and softball and baseball for kindergarten through eighth grade. and conservation organizations, academic institutions, state and local government agencies, local businesses, planning agencies, landowners, farmers, and residents. Within the 150-square-mile Pequea Creek Watershed, the federal investment will support practices that keep soils and nutrients on the land instead of in the water with such practices as cover crops, no-till agriculture, nutrient management, animal waste management, riparian buffers, streambank fencing, streambank stabilization, and reducing legacy sediment. Originating in a small portion of western Chester County, the Pequea watershed extends through the heart of Lancaster County. Planned changes are also intended to help meet the
nutrient and sediment reduction goals set forth in the Countywide Action Plan in Lancaster County, noted Brian Gish, the CBF watershed coordinator who drafted the Pequea plan. The Pequea Creek restoration plan was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and is awaiting final Environmental Protection Agency approval; once approved by both organizations, its implementation will be eligible for federal funding through Section 319 of the Clean Water Act. Gish is now working with others on new watershed restoration plans for Marsh Creek in Centre County and the Upper Conestoga in Lancaster, Berks, and Chester counties.
