Exhibit highlights local student artwork
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Seventeen student artists in Lampeter-Strasburg School District received a total of 40 awards at this year’s Lancaster County Young Artists exhibit. The regional competition, which is organized through a partnership between the Demuth Foundation, the Lancaster Museum of Art and Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, opened on March 9.
This year’s award winners include Alice Buffington, Claire Eckert, Jacqueline Kunitsky, Elisabeth Reinhart, Emily Lapinsky, Madeline Ross, Rachael Mann, Bella Heyser, Lillian O’Bannon, Gianna Fasano, Ava Weit, Matalyn Zook, Allys Rodriguez, Ryann Logan, Julia
Gerald, Lilianna Sanderson, and Isabella Wiggins.
“This type of exhibition gives them a chance to go through the entire process and to see where their strengths lie.”
The exhibit is hosted at the Lancaster Museum of Art and Pennsylvania College of Art & Design simultaneously, and it features the work of students from middle schools and high schools throughout the county. A selection of pieces made by artists in Lampeter-Strasburg School District remained on display until April 7 at the Lancaster Museum of Art, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster.
Every year, students between seventh and 12th grades are invited to submit work in the Lancaster County Young Artists exhibit, which is open to kids who are enrolled in a local district as well as homeschooled youths. The regional competition includes categories for apparel, ceramics
Breakfast serves Lancaster County veterans
BY JEFF FALK
For a group of local veterans, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Sure, the nutrition is important. But the real sustainability comes from fellowship, shared experiences and compassion.
The group goes by the name of Lancaster County Veterans Breakfast Club (LCVBC). While it’s sort of a cross between a self-help outreach program and a support group, it’s also a reminder that United States veterans have
always come up with ways to get the job done.
“There’s a camaraderie with all of us,” said LCVBC founder Bill Terry. “There is a bond. We are all brothers and sisters. It’s honoring those who have gone before us. There’s an understanding that we gave to the defense of our country. It’s what all of us have in common. It might have been a higher calling because it’s not for everyone.”
LCVBC meets on the third Saturday of every month. Over the past five years, the breakfast

“The making of art is only one part of the process as an artist,” said Scott Cantrell, an art teacher at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. “The presentation, the consideration of the audience and venue, the reception and sometimes sale of the work is half of the process of being a working artist. So this type of exhibition gives them a chance to go through the entire process and to see where their strengths lie.” Art teachers in each school district select work from their students to enter in the contest every year. Once the submissions are judged, artists who have been

club had met at a restaurant in Bird-in-Hand before a fire temporarily shut down the restaurant.
In the upcoming months, LCVBC has scheduled meetings at 6:45 a.m. on April 20, May 18 and June 15 all at the former Revere Tavern, 3063 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Many of the breakfasts are paid for by sponsors, including local businesses.
“It didn’t start out with a mission,” said Terry, a resident of East Hempfield Township and a Vietnam War-era Navy veteran. “It was just a way to get vets together. It was a time to have breakfast with other veterans. Then some gentlemen began stepping up and paying for the breakfast. Now we have a
jar and pass it around and collect funds for veterans’ groups. We’re still giving back to the community, even though some of us have already put our lives on the line.”
A typical LCVBC gathering could include the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, the relaying of jokes and a guest speaker.
“There seems to be a lack of understanding toward what veterans have done,” said Terry. “If you were not in battle, it’s much easier to get acclimated back into civilian life. If you were in battle, it is hard.”
Anywhere from 100 to 130 local veterans show up for the breakfasts. Most hail from the Vietnam War era, but the group also includes veterans of World War II, Korean War, the war in Afghanistan and other military conflicts.
“The interaction that goes on there is great,” said Terry. “There is an element of support to it.”
According to the United States Department of Defense, less than 1% of the country’s total
population is currently serving in the military, and only about 10% of the total population are veterans. Nearly 17 veterans commit suicide each day, according to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
“Vets wear hats so we can identify each other,” said Terry. “It’s not for the civilians. It’s so we know who served. I’ll look for the hats when I’m handing out business cards for the breakfast club. The breakfast club is a way to come out and be with likeminded people. For some, it’s a way to continue to serve the community.”
Veterans are encouraged to make reservations for the breakfast by calling Mary at 717-929-0310.

Young musicians to present recital
A spring recital will be presented by members of the Workshop for Young Performing Artists (WYPA), a local organization of young classically trained musicians. The event will take place on Sunday, April 14, at 3 p.m. at the Bachman Center, 633 Community Way, Lancaster, located on the property of Homestead Village.
WYPA is a student organization sponsored by the Musical Art Society that meets once each month, giving students performance experience in preparation for recitals, competitions, auditions, and other music opportunities. The group presents public programs in April,
December, and June. The counselors are Margaret Marsch, Dora Zlatkin, John Zielinski, Chris Prestia, and Sean Skinner. This year’s junior counselor is Candace Mbugua.
On April 14, members will present piano, violin, flute, and vocal works, including piano concertos by Beethoven and Shostakovich. Other selections will include a Beethoven sonata, a flute concerto by Devienne, a Puccini opera piece, a fiddle piece, and Liszt’s “Mephisto Waltz” on the piano.
The concert is free and open to the public, and the venue is handicappedaccessible. Donations will be received to provide student scholarships.
Young artists from pg 1
chosen for the exhibit are contacted directly to drop off their work. “Many of these students spend an exorbitant amount of time and effort on their artwork,” Cantrell said. “So, to be recognized for their dedication is an important
motivator to continue in the practice of art-making.”
Women’s club sets meeting
The Lancaster Christian Women’s Club will hold a “May Is for Makeovers” luncheon meeting at noon on Wednesday, May 1, at Casa di Fiori at The Inn at Leola Village, 38 Deborah Drive, Leola. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m.
The program will feature Neil and Jill Rohrerbaugh of Inu Salon & Spa in the Shoppes at Belmont. Jill will also share special music. Jill is a vocalist, blogger and homeschool mom.
The speaker, author Ann Curry from South Carolina, will share her story in a presentation titled “A Journey Not by Chance.”
All women are invited to attend. There is a cost
per person. Reservations and payment are required by Wednesday, April 17.
Those registering are asked to note the names of their guests and others they wish to sit with. For more details and reservations, call 717-799-0088.
Lancaster County Young Artists was initially run by multiple volunteers. In recent years, the Lancaster Museum of Art and the Demuth Foundation took over the management of the annual contest. Artwork from an additional seven school districts was exhibited at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design in Lancaster city. For more information, visit www.demuth.org.

farms often begin to receive more responsibilities as they become involved with the family business. One of the main goals of Farm & Family Safety Day is to familiarize children who reside on farms with local first responders and their equipment used for emergencies. Many farms in the Southern End are operated by members of the Plain community, and many Amish and Mennonite children don’t often have an opportunity to see vehicles like ambulances. This year a new activity has been introduced to the event to give attendees an up-close look at many different types of first responder vehicles, including a police car, an ambulance, and the LGH emergency response
vehicle. A helicopter landing will occur at 11 a.m. if weather permits.
After the Farm & Family Safety Day in 2021, event coordinator Lindsay Pringle was approached by a member of the Amish community. The woman thanked Pringle for bringing the event back after the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that the information provided during a previous fire safety presentation helped her prevent the loss of her home a few years later. “That really resonated with me,” said Pringle. “This event truly provides folks with useful information, and ultimately it can save people’s homes and kids’ lives.” Pringle also noted that this is a multigenerational event that many
community members have grown to appreciate over the years; some attendees who used to take their children to Farm & Family Safety Day now bring their grandchildren.
LGH requests that attendees register the total number of adults and children in their group prior to the event by contacting Pringle at Lindsay.Pringle@ pennmedicine.upenn.edu or by calling 717-544-3807.
“Ultimately, we want to keep children out of the hospital,” Pringle said. “It’s important to hear from experts in the field on injuries to ensure members of the local community have the best quality of life.”

Workshop to focus on native plants
Landscaping and water gardening activities often lead to the unintended introduction and spread of invasive plant species to natural lands and waterways. Once established, invasive species can degrade natural habitats by outcompeting native species for space, light, and nutrients. Invasive species can impact the food web by altering the plant community and decreasing the diversity of plants available for food sources, habitat, and shelter. The workshop will introduce participants to native species options and creative ways to include native species in landscapes and aquatic designs.
This mini-workshop is hosted by Pennsylvania Sea Grant and Penn State Extension with a special guest presentation by Native Creations Landscaping Services. The event is offered at no charge through funding from the Richard King Mellon Foundation and the Great Lakes Commission.

Pledge the Pink launches shoe drive fundraiser
Pledge the Pink will conduct a shoe drive fundraiser until Tuesday, May 14, to raise funds to fight breast cancer. Funds2Orgs will issue a check based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn used and new shoes collected by Pledge the Pink.
Shoes will be collected at Tellus360, 24 E. King St., Lancaster; Bespoke Brewing, 226 Gap Road, Ronks; Uller’s Outdoor, 1031 Haines Road, York; Alltypes Insurance, 35 E. State St., Quarryville; Formula Fitness, 2495 E. Lincoln Highway, Lancaster; Strasburg-Heisler Library, 143 Precision Ave., Strasburg; and Sneaker Den, 3822 W. Lincoln Highway, Downingtown. All sizes and styles of shoes for men, women, and children will be accepted.
All donated shoes will be redistributed through the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise (small business) partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain, and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunities and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe, and house the entrepreneurs’ families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school. Additional information about Funds2Orgs is available at https://funds2orgs.com.

At Steps to Success’ next fundraiser, magic will be everywhere
BY JEFF FALK
Magic is mysterious. Magic is entertaining. Magic is illusion.
But do you know what else magic is? It’s a great way to raise funds.
The upcoming Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale is truly a magical event. It’s the brainchild of organizer Tait Harbaughknown in the magic realm as Papa Tater - and it serves as a creative way to raise monies for the nonprofit Steps to Success, which his wife, Michelle, operates.
“Magic is creating wonder, amazement,” said Harbaugh. “What you do beyond that is who you are as an entertainer. If it makes someone’s eyes grow wide, you’ve done your job. When you make people forget about life for a
moment, that’s magic. I have tricks to create amazement and wonder. But for me personally, I want to make people laugh.”
The 10th edition of the Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale, billed as a micro magic convention, will be presented on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Zion Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. About 40 magicians from Lancaster County and beyond will be there plying their trade, selling and trading their wares and captivating curious onlookers.
The event is free, and everyone is welcome. Concessions will be available, and all proceeds from their sale will benefit Steps to Success, which has served the community for 30 years through early child care and education.
“I want people to come out and have a good time and explore magic,” said Harbaugh. “The goal is to support Steps to Success. Michelle saw this need in the community and put together four after-school programs in Conestoga Valley. Steps has grown immensely since COVID, and every time (it has), it’s been to help someone out. She tries to look out for the community. I really care about Steps, and
I really care about the magic community.”
Steps to Success is hoping to raise $700 through the event. In addition to the concessions, the nonprofit will accept direct donations and participating magicians donate a nominal fee to operate their table stations.
Last year, 200 magic enthusiasts attended.
“I’m a very late bloomer, and I was in my 30s when I started getting into magic,” said Harbaugh. “At one point Michelle said, ‘Hey, that’s something you could do for the kids.’ The little lovelies loved it so much that I brought more. I realized I love making people laugh. That’s when I got serious about magic.”
Those who attend the Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale can expect to be treated to card tricks,
puppets, clowns, face painting, vintage and rare magic, sleight of hand, the unexplained, and maybe even a bed of nails.
“It’s a room full of magic. It’s a room full of magicians,” said Harbaugh. “There’s definitely excitement in the air. If you ask the magicians to see a trick, they’re off. They love to perform. We really like seeing young people have an interest. Magic is so much more than a trick. It’s theater. It’s public presentation.”
For Harbaugh, magic has sort of become an accelerant for his journey’s second act.
“I’m a comedy magician,” said Harbaugh. “I’m trying to get into comedy. I’m trying stand-up. All of my shows end up being comedy shows. I just love laughter.”

DMVA offers assistance with veterans benefits
The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) announced that its mobile veterans outreach vans are available throughout the state to assist veterans in obtaining information and initiating benefit claim paperwork through the assistance of DMVA accredited veteran service officers.
The DMVA brings essential services directly to veterans and can be booked online for community events such as fairs and festivals. The vans offer no-cost, on-site assistance with veterans benefits.

Program to focus on Paul Revere
The Strasburg Heritage Society will meet on Monday, April 15, at the Strasburg Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St., at 7 p.m.

The presentation will include information about Revere’s family, his businesses, and his little-known court martial. The meeting is free and open to the public.
