“This story goes from tragedy to triumph,” said Vernon Wright, chief development officer with Christ’s Home, citing the theme of the organization’s upcoming fundraising dinner. The story Wright referred to is now the subject of a feature film based in Lancaster County that is due to be released late this year. “Brave the Dark” is the story of Nate Deen, who began life as Nate Busko and was orphaned at a young age after a tragedy involving his parents. Nate will speak at the organization’s upcoming spring dinner because part of his story unfolded at Christ’s Home in Paradise. Nate and his wife, Jessica, had been supporters of Christ’s Home for many years, even bringing presents for the children at Christmastime. Several years ago, when the couple attended a fundraising dinner, they met Wright and John Bryant, chief executive officer, and Nate began to tell them of his history with the organization. “We met with him and his wife for breakfast and began to dig into his story,” recalled Wright. “We were intrigued by it.” The administrators learned how as a teenager Nate was homeless, living in his car and using school showers as a student at Garden Spot High School. One day, Stan Deen, a teacher at the school, offered him a chocolate bar after class. When Nate found himself in jail only weeks later, Stan visited him, offering him a place to live once he was released. After Stan died in 2016, Nate changed his last name to Deen to honor the man who raised him, and

employment opportunities. The organization also helps low-income families receive free eye exams, basic frames, and contact lenses. Funding from the community is what allows VisionCorps to continue offering these services, which is why the organization will host another EyeDrop event this summer. Through EyeDrop, individuals can rappel down the side of the Holiday Inn building in exchange for fundraising a minimum amount for VisionCorps. Those who participate on behalf of a nonprofit, like MacAdam, can raise money for VisionCorps and their own organization. In order to rappel at the event, MacAdam needs to raise a minimum of $1,500 for VisionCorps, but if MacAdam surpasses the minimum contribution amount, then that additional money will benefit the Rotary Club. Last year, she raised nearly $4,000. “It’s a terrific initial cause,” said MacAdam. “What VisionCorps does is important to the people who use their services, and it’s a much-needed service. The fact that there’s an opportunity for the Rotary Club to benefit is another win for the community because whatever comes back to us, we turn out the door.” Chartered on June 20, 1987, with 35 members, the Rotary Club of Lancaster South is one of more than 35,000 Rotary Clubs scattered across the globe. The mission of Rotary Clubs is to provide service to others,

promote integrity, and advance world understanding, good will, and peace through the fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Funds raised for the Rotary Club through VisionCorps’ EyeDrop event will go toward the club’s philanthropic work in the community, such as providing scholarships to students who graduate from Lampeter-Strasburg, Solanco, and Penn Manor high schools. “Martha has really done a great job for the Rotary Club,” said Patrick Roberts, secretary of the Rotary Club of Lancaster South. “She has a lot of energy, and she always steps up to the plate. The more funds we raise, the more we can give back to the community, and we cover a big area.” MacAdam’s fundraising deadline is the day of the event, and VisionCorps’ goal is to reach $175,000. Sports from pg 8 Ben Devin was the only first place finisher for the boys, taking the 3200 in 10:08.58. At Ephrata, Maggie Swarr’s sweep in the throws anchored a 75.5 - 74.5 thriller. “It came down to the discus,” said head coach Cal Esh. “Maggie had already won the shot and javelin and was leading the discus with a throw of 91-9. Ephrata’s best thrower tied that mark on her last throw but in the throws, if you have a tie, you don’t split the points, you go back to each thrower’s second best throw where Maggie won by six inches. “It came down to the last event, the last throw in that event, and then a tiebreaker to squeak out a win,” explained Esh. Swarr dominated the javelin, winning by over 33 feet, and did the same in the shot, topping Ephrata’s Andes by over three feet. Malcolm sparked the action on the track, winning both hurdle events and joining Myers, Bruner, and Wall to take the 4x100 relay. Elly Bruner, like Swarr and Malcolm, also scored 15 points. She won the long jump, was part of the 4x100 relay, was second in the 300 hurdles and tied for second in the high jump. Despite a sweep in the 3200 (Owen Witmer, Ben Devine, Colin Whitaker) and Teagan Weaver’s victories in the 100, 200, long and triple jumps, the boys team suffered an 82-68 loss to the Mounts, who swept the relays enroute to a 52-35 advantage on the track alone. Luka Vranich won the 400 and Whitaker took the mile to round out the track winners. In the field, Mitchell Livengood won the pole vault (11-0), Aiden Jones won the javelin and Jordan Thode out threw Ephrata’s Kunkle in the discus with a winning 112-7.

Refresh Lancaster is a mobile shower and medical care service unit offered by a partnership involving Lancaster EMS, LancCo MyHome, and a local entity depending on the area of the county where the unit deploys. The current schedule puts the unit at a location from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. On Mondays, the unit is in Columbia at Columbia Presbyterian Church, 360 Locust St. Columbia, and on Tuesdays, it sets up at ECHOS, 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown. In New Holland, the local partner is CrossNet Ministries, so the unit is at 110 W. Franklin St., each Wednesday, and on Fridays, the unit is at Union Community Care, 304 N. Water St., Lancaster. Alexa Morales, community paramedic technician and shower trailer lead, noted that a place is needed in Ephrata to deploy on
Thursdays. Morales would like to add a second early morning deployment in the city of Lancaster where children could shower prior to school. She would also like to find places in Solanco, Pequea Valley, and East Lampeter to offer the service. The unit offers two private showers to accommodate families and children, along with clean towels and toiletry kits. Women’s hygiene kits, made up by the Lancaster Pilot Club, include encouraging cards, nail files, wipes, mouthwash, lip balm, shampoo, and conditioner. Items for men include razors and shave gel. “We have socks, underwear, bras, undershirts, and we have some things for children too,” stated Morales, who added that a partnership with GROVE, a cleaning supply company, helps stock the kits and provides cleaning supplies for families. The unit also offers pregnancy tests and resources.
