Hands-on history

On April 5 and 12, Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, welcomed students for a day of interactive learning activities.

Through a partnership with Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and Solanco School District, Historic Rock Ford offered fifth-grade students a hands-on educational

A global perspective

Throughoutthe year, members of Lampeter-Strasburg High School’s Model United Nations (MUN) club attend conferences to compete against MUN clubs from other schools. The conferences serve as opportunities to for students to debate modern issues and learn about global politics. At the conference in March, Lampeter-Strasburg’s MUN club came away with five awards, and the club currently leads the Susquehanna Valley MUN chapter.

During each conference, students are assigned to five committees: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the strategic response committee, World Health Organization and the historical crisis committee. As the participants debate a real-life global issue, each student represents a different nation, approaching the conflict from the perspective of his or her assigned country and committee. At the last conference, students’ discussion topic was the regulation of drone warfare. The students’ goal is to win support for their side of the

issue, which they attempt through debate, writing position papers and negotiating with other representatives. A total of four to five awards are then given to committees based on the students’ ability to build a consensus or demonstrate aptitude as statesmen.

“We take the perspective of those who are struggling and different political systems, which teaches you to be less provincial in your thinking,” said senior Braden Weese, president of the MUN club at Lampeter Strasburg High School. “Being able to step outside of our American viewpoint is very valuable.” Weese has been a member of MUN since he was a freshman, although he said that he has always been passionate about politics and debate. Weese credits MUN with improving his public speaking and debating skills and added that he believes his experience will serve him well after he graduates. Weese plans to attend college with the goal of becoming a criminal defense lawyer.

Members of the Lampeter-Strasburg MUN meet every two weeks to hold practice sessions and prepare for conferences, and Lampeter-Strasburg

High School’s club is run by social studies teachers Adam Titter and Lindsey Shehan. Although students are not allowed to draft the papers that they will present at conferences ahead of time, many use the meetings as an opportunity to research their topics and debate each other.

“I’ve learned to understand parliamentary procedures and learned so many different viewpoints, which is the neatest part,” said senior Maggie Swarr, vice president of the club.

“You have to get behind what you’re bringing to the table, and you have to be strong-willed.” Swarr plans to study architecture after high school, and she added that MUN has taught her how to be confident with public speaking and how to express her point of view.

Some members of MUN, such as junior Maddie Ross, said that the club has helped them work through nervousness when public speaking in addition to being introduced to new perspectives. “I can be a super stubborn person, but being able to see that other people hold their viewpoints for a reason is so important and will help me wherever I go,” Ross said.

experience focused on brickmaking and its role in history.

Upon arriving at Historic Rock Ford, the students were divided into three groups; each group was assigned to a different activity. The first group visited the brickmaking station and was given a presentation on how bricks are laid to support the various parts of a structure and how many square feet are required depending on the building. After the presentation, students mixed the ingredients to create bricks and then applied mortar to finished bricks. Students were able to see the proper ratio of materials required to successfully craft a brick. Once the students had crafted real bricks, they completed an exercise in which they replicated the brick patterns of different houses with foam replicas.

Trucking on to grant wishes

Think of the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy, and you might think of a long line of trucks traveling down the roads of Lancaster County. That is certainly central to the event, said Terry Finch, event chairperson, but that is just part of a special day.

“Our event is anchored by the Convoy trucks and our extremely generous truck drivers, but it is so much more,” Finch shared about the event that kicks off at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction.

“It’s a community celebration of our Wish Children, and we hope everyone who joins us can take part in the games and fun that happens

inside the Auto Auction lanes.”

This year’s Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will take place on Sunday, May 14, at the Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. Beginning at 9 a.m., a Family Carnival will feature food trucks, carnival games, music, mascots and Make-A-Wish merchandise sales. Across Auction Road from the main building and truck lot, there will be a chicken dinner available for drive-through pickup, Finch noted. “There is also an online auction running the entire week before the Convoy and ending at midnight the next day, featuring Wish Kid art, jewelry, golf foursomes, gift cards and much more,” she shared.

Student-athletes make college commitments

Lampeter-Strasburg Pioneer athletes Benjamin Devine, Tristen Showers, Madison Weichler, and Brooke Zuber pledged to play sports at the college level during an NCAA Commitment Day ceremony on April 12. The group joins 18 classmates who pledged at the November and February com-

mitment ceremonies.

Devine will compete in track and cross-country at Marywood University, and Showers will play football at Susquehannna University. Weichler will join the track team at Shippensburg University, and Zuber will play softball at Towson University.

Alumni to hold chicken barbecue

The Thaddeus Stevens Alumni Association will hold a chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 13, at Stauffers of Kissel Hill, 301 Rohrerstown Road, Lancaster. Meals will be sold from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The cost of a meal will include a half-chicken, a

potato, applesauce, a roll, and a drink. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the House of Champ, located on the campus of Thaddeus Stevens College, 750 E. King St., Lancaster. Meals will be available to purchase on the day of the event as well.

The Make-A-Wish event brings independent drivers and trucking companies from all over the Susquehanna Valley as well as from across the country to participate in the festivities that raise funds needed to grant 75% of the annual wishes in the Susquehanna Valley.

Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley grants wishes for children with critical illnesses. Over the years, the Convoy has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. “In recent years, our record fundraising was just over $600,000,” Finch noted. “Our goal for this year is $700,000.” She said organizers are hoping for 400 trucks to participate in the Convoy this year.

“Our drivers fundraise all year long,” she explained, “and the top fundraisers in dollars earned make up the top 30 drivers in the Convoy. They are the front row of trucks and will lead out

the event as they travel along the Convoy route.”

The top driver will pull the Wish Angel trailer, which is a tribute to Wish Children in the chapter area who have passed away in the 34 years since the Convoy began. “Each year, we add names to stars on the trailer before it goes on the route,” Finch remarked. “During our 12 p.m. announcements at the stage, we also ask the top 30 drivers to put their hands on the trailer and have a moment of silence for our Wish Angels.”

When the Convoy heads out, Wish Children are invited to ride along with the drivers, said Finch, noting that up to 100 of them have joined drivers in the past.

The route will run from Manheim to Elizabethtown and Mount Joy, and Finch encourages people to watch the Convoy along the route and cheer on the Wish Children. She recommends viewing the Convoy at LCBC on Route 772 in Manheim, where there will be food trucks and special visitors, and anywhere along Main Street in Mount Joy.

Organization plans bingo event, seeks assistance

Big Hug Inc. will host its inaugural Pocketbook Bingo fundraiser at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 521 E. Orange St., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Doors will open at 10 a.m. The event will include 10 games of bingo, two special games and giveaway drawings. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Space is limited to 200 bingo players. Tickets will be discounted when purchased in advance and full price at the door. To purchase tickets and for more details, visit www.bighuginc.org or search for “Big Hug Inc.” Information is also available by calling 717-299-5599. The proceeds from this event will go to feeding people throughout central Pennsylvania over the coming months.

Big Hug Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization that works to feed those who are homeless and hungry throughout Lancaster, York, Berks, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. The organization was started in late 2021 by Linda Than.

When Than was a little girl in Vietnam, she and her family would gather around the dinner table to share meals and stories of their day. Than came to the United States just over three decades ago, initially living in Washington, D.C., for a few months before moving with her

family to Lancaster. During her time in the nation’s capital, Than saw many people who were homeless, and she felt a need to help. Big Hug Inc. is based on Than’s joy for cooking and caring for others, interests that came from her late mother.

Since Big Hug’s founding, Than has organized a five-person board of directors, which includes the Rev. Louis Butcher, former pastor of Bright Side Baptist Church. The board meets monthly and supports Than in her efforts to feed those in need.

Big Hug is seeking assistance from local churches and community organizations that have commercial kitchens and gathering space where Big Hug volunteers may prepare and serve meals on weekend days. Currently, two or three facilities per county are needed for this purpose. Thus far, Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia has invited Big Hug to provide its services one Sunday in June and another in August. Volunteers and financial contributions are sought, as well.

Big Hug has set a goal to feed more than 2,500 people before the end of 2024. Than also hopes to one day have a food truck that will allow her to take her mission into the streets, directly to people in need.

Pioneers defend section title with win over Cocalico

The tennis team kept pace with Cocalico throughout the regular season and both teams entered the final week undefeated, setting up a showdown for the section title at L-S Wednesday, April 19. And with the final volley complete, the Pioneers, who lost three of their top five players from last year, prevailed, 4-3, and defended their Section Two crown. They sit at 11-2 overall.

Twin brothers Spencer and Cole Teaman grabbed an 8-3 No. 2 doubles win over Cocalico brothers Sebastian and Nicholas Neustadter while Justin Gouger and Kenny Finn turned in a solid 8-2 result at No. 3 over Luke Main and Aaron Wilczek.

Singles play featured Spencer and Cole Teaman winning in straight sets at No. 2 and 3 respectively, wrapping up the win.

Joe Fitzgerald and Kyle Pawson almost made it a clean sweep in doubles play, battling to a 9-8 loss.

The boys were coming off a 7-0 Monday shutout against Lebanon. Fitzgerald and Owen Lapp, C. and S. Teaman, and Gouger and Finn handled doubles play while Fitzgerald, C. Teaman and S. Teaman all won 6-0, 6-0 in singles and Gouger, at No. 4, won 6-0, 6-1.

BASEBALL

The baseball team ran its winning streak to four straight, three coming over the last week.

Friday, April 14, they got a no-hit effort from Anthony Turek and blanked CV 7-0.

“Anthony made a bunch of quality pitches, and we made the defensive plays,” said head coach Jeff Swarr. “He ended up striking out six, picked off one,

and was consistently ahead in the count. We had quality atbats and continued to put pressure on them until we broke it open with five runs in the top of the seventh. Almost everyone in the lineup was on base at some point,” he added, “and Anthony scored twice because he was HBP twice.”

After a 2-0 loss to the Bears on April 10, L-S evened the score on Monday, April 17th, with a 10-4 victory. A four-run first sparked the attack and a six-run sixth pushed the lead to 10-0 before L-S stymied an Elizabethtown rally.

“Peyton Harsh threw a great game and worked ahead in the count, though he struggled after we scored those six runs,” recalled Swarr. “He sat for a long time when we scored those runs.”

Tanner Groff went 2-4 with a homerun and four RBI. Will Bailey collected three RBI on a 3-4 outing, seeing 25 pitches in four at bats. Turek was 3-3 with one RBI.

Wednesday, Ephrata and L-S both scored two seventh inning runs but Lampeter’s solo scores in the fourth and fifth innings pushed the Pioneers past the Mounts, 4-2.

Long went 2-4 with two RBI and pitched a complete game with four strikeouts and four walks to lead the way.

TRACK

The track teams put up some close numbers in a mixed result final on Monday, April 17. The boys’ split first place finishes but used their depth to secure an 82-68 win over Garden Spot while the girls’ dropped a heartbreaker, 70-60.

“We got a real team effort from the boys with a sweep in the javelin (Danny Jones, Braden Bauer and Braden

Weese) and Carson Coleman winning the 100, 200 and joining Owen Keener, Aidan Black and Damoj Gray to take the 4x100,” said head coach Cal Esh.

Ben Devin and Parker Stoner went 1-2 in the mile and Colin Whitaker claimed the 800. All three, along with Doutrich, opened the meet with a 4x800 relay win.

Whitaker was also second in the 3200 behind Michael Colosi.

Lampeter’s final win was a 10-6 vault by Aidan Wiley with Greyson Myers taking second.

“The throwing girls had a huge day,” praised Esh. “Maggie Swar took three firsts, and they swept the shot and discus with Kelsey McTaggart (third in the javelin) and Brooke Hess taking seconds and thirds. But we didn’t win any of the relays.”

Also in the field, Elly Bruner won the high jump, was second in the long and finished third in the triple while Meadow Shussler and Natalie Holland went 2-3 in the pole vault.

On the track, Lyndi Wall was her usual speedy self, winning both the 100 and 200. Keira Smecker won the mile and Merin Kauffman led the 3200.

GIRLS LAX

The girls’ lacrosse team kept its unbeaten streak intact with convincing wins over Garden Spot (April 13), Cocalico (April 17) and Lanc. Co. Day (April 18) last week and are poised to win the section title if the winning continues.

“We are in the driver’s seat to win our first ever section title, but we have to win out,” said head coach Marshall Krebs. “We beat Cocalico 16-6, but it was a tight game. We steadily pulled away. The team played well and played together as evidenced by 13 assisted goals.”

Rowan Kimmel was impressive with four goals and four assists while Abigail Welchans (4g, 1a) and Bethany Stoltzfus (3g, 2a) weren’t too shabby in the stats department either.

Other scores included Leigha Saurbaugh (1g), Hannah Cissne (2g, 4a), Ryann Logan (1g) and Trinity Wise (1g, 2a).

In the crushing victory over Garden Spot, which featured a 12-1 halftime lead, Cissne and Kimmel led the way with five goals each.

Lancaster Country Day was no match for L-S on April 19. The Pioneers racked up a season-high 24 goals and gave up four in a lopsided win. Saurbaugh (5g), Kimmel (4g, 2a), Stoltzfus (4g), Cissne (3g, 2a), Logan (3g) and Welchans (2g, 2a) were the multiple goal scorers.

SOFTBALL

Looking to make it three wins straight last Monday, April 17, the Pioneers dropped

a slugfest against visiting Elizabethtown, 16-7. The Bears scored seven runs on two hits in the fourth to seal Lampeter’s fate. Both teams collected 15 hits on the day.

“That was a tough one to swallow because we played so well against CV,” said head coach Earl Rutledge. “Etown had that one big inning where things went their way.”

Chloe Meck went 2-4 with two RBI and Julia Gerard also had two RBI, going 1-5. Brooke Zuber (3-4), Ally Raub (2-3), Mackenzie Mack (2-3) and Maura Savoca (2-4) also finished with multiple hits.

In Monday’s 8-3 win against CV, the Pioneers rallied from a 3-2 deficit with four runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth and took advantage of five errors. Zuber’s three run homer sparked that fourth inning rally.

“Brook has three ‘no doubt about it’ home runs,” said Rutledge. “Ally pitched a really good game, hitting her spots,” said Rutledge, “and we did play better defense.”

Raub went the distance in the circle, striking out eight, walking three and scattering eight hits.

Meck, who went 2-3, was the only batter with two hits.

Ephrata avenged an 8-5 April 3 loss with a 10-3 victory over L-S on April 19. The Pioneers scored all three of their runs in the third inning, struck out 10 times and committed five errors. Kara Scranton collected two of Lampeter’s three hits.

BOYS’ LAX

After a 9-4 loss to section leader Cocalico in their first meeting, the Pioneers were looking to even the score Monday, April 17. An efficient

offense in the second half paid off for L-S. Down 4-2 at the half, L-S outscored the Eagles 7-5 over the final two quarters to force overtime. Unfortunately, the Eagle remained undefeated when Evan Youndt scored the game-winner in the sudden victory extra period.

KJ Kessler tallied six second-half goals to spark the visitors. Cocalico’s goal with 25 seconds left in regulation send the game to overtime.

Leading scorer Colin Sullivan finished with two goals and one assist and Zach Labrecque added one goal and one assist to round out the scoring.

L-S currently sits in second place as their four-game winning streak ends.

The Pioneers were coming off a 20-3 thumping over Wyomissing on April 15. Sullivan led the way with eight goals and three assists. Gavin Denlinger (6g) and Chase Barber (4a) also contributed.

L-S also posted a 13-3 victory over Garden Spot on the 13th. Sullivan again paced the scoring with five goals and three assists. Labrecque (3g, 3a), Barber (1g, 2a), Gavin Denlinger (1g), Owen Krause (1g), Kessler (1g), Grant Filius (1a) and Anthony Carson (1g) also contributed to the attack.

“We played great team defense and cleared the ball very well,” said head coach Mike McConomy.

L-S took care of business on Wednesday, April 19, turning a 12-2 first half lead into a 19-7 home victory. Sullivan exploded for a season-high eight goals and dished four assists to spark the win. Denlinger

For the brickmaking portion of the day, masonry students from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology assisted Debbie Smith, chair of the school programming committee at Historic Rock Ford, with instructing the fifth-graders. Smith approached Mike Gardner, the director of masonry at Thaddeus Stevens, with the idea to create a joint learning opportunity for elementary school students and college students alike. For masonry students, the program provides an opportunity for them to share their craft with the community and apply what they’ve learned outside of school. “(Gardner) has been so knowledgeable and energetic about getting his students involved,” Smith said. “This is a project that engages people across multiple generations of learners.”

While the first group of students was learning about brickmaking, the second group was taken on a tour of General Edward Hand’s Mansion and learned about the property’s history. Students had an opportunity to see a collection of artifacts around the mansion and ask questions about their historical significance.

The third group of students visited the John J. Snyder Jr. Gallery of Early Lancaster County Decorative Arts. In the gallery, students explored a collection of clocks, chests, cabinets and works of art. Visitors were able to listen to the chimes of the Shreiner clock, a rare musical clock that dates back to the early 18th century. The unusual device plays eight unique tones, which musicologists are attempting to identify today. After completing an activity to learn about how gears work together to make a clock function, students were able to walk through the museum’s collection.

“The students love it and they get really engaged,” Smith said. “They’re learning in immersive environments, and they’re surrounded by history. Even the masonry students are transported to another time and get to use their imaginations and a sense of wonder.” Each group of fifth-graders rotated through the activities throughout the day.

The brickmaking program is one in a series of school programs offered by Historic Rock Ford, which is designated as an educational improvement organization by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Historic Rock Ford is always looking for volunteers for its programs. For more information, visit https://historicrock ford.org/volunteer.
