Cassie Meck
For The Honor And Glory Of The Lord BY COURTNEY MENGEL
ampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS) senior Cassie Meck is a girl of many talents. She’s been playing softball since she was 10 years old, and she is president of Tri-M Music Honor Society, vice president of Thespian Society, and secretary of Spanish Club. She is a member of National Honor Society, Varsity Club, the concert and jazz bands, Madrigals, Pioneer Interact Club, the spring musical cast, and the varsity softball team. Cassie attends Strasburg Mennonite Church, where she was baptized in 2018. Last fall, she was a West Lampeter Fair queen candidate. “I just like to try new things and stick with them,” said Cassie. “Everything that I do I enjoy because it’s all for the honor and
Art National Gold Award for her ceramic piece “Graves Into Gardens.” She was one of only two winners for this region in art and one of 2,000 overall for art and writing combined. There will be a national awards ceremony on Thursday, June 9, at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Cassie’s piece is a canopic jar, a type of vessel used by ancient Egyptians to contain mummified organs. Based on this tradition, Cassie made her jar in remembrance of her grandfather who died last year. She filled the base of the jar with dead flowers she had kept from her grandfather’s funeral, and in the hollowed head on the top of the jar, she planted a flower. She said she plans to give the jar to her grandmother. Cassie views this award as one of the major highlights of her time at LSHS. Another highlight of her high
school experience is her involvement in the spring musicals. She said her two favorite productions were “The Wizard of Oz” because it was her first lead role and “Anything Goes” because she learned how to tap dance. “I always say that at LampeterStrasburg you’re blessed to have such amazing teachers, and they all encourage me to keep doing the extracurriculars that I do and to do them well,” stated Cassie. She also noted that her parents, Robert and Shannon, and siblings, Amber, Chloe, and Austin, are very supportive. For students who are approaching high school, Cassie has some advice. “It never hurts to try something new,” she commented. “Just open yourself up to as many opportunities that come your way because you never know where that will take you.”

glory of the Lord. That’s one of my biggest priorities.” Cassie also works part-time at her family’s business. The Meck family has operated a stand at the Lancaster Central Market since 1960. Although its retail presence dates to 1960, the Meck family has a farming history that spans six generations. In 2002, the Meck family purchased the farm where it is currently located along Beaver Valley Pike between Strasburg and Quarryville. What Cassie remembers about her childhood is going to Central Market every Saturday to stock produce and help her dad with the customers. “I think the biggest thing I learned from that was just how to interact with people, which is a really big help in everything that you do,” she explained. Cassie recently won a Scholastic
The Pet Pantry of Lancaster County started in 2011 as an animal food pantry that operated out of CEO Melody Sanders’ living room. As of March 2, the Pet Pantry now owns its “furever” home. The organization’s mission is to meet the community’s need for affordable animal care, which the Pet Pantry aims to accomplish through its three pillars: feed, fix, and rescue. Through its food program, the Pet Pantry serves about 250 local families by providing an average of more than 70,000 pounds of animal food every year. These families must meet certain requirements that show they are taking responsibility of their animal by having them spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and, for dogs, licensed.

LeeP Productions will present “Then Sings My Soul: Beloved Hymns & Songs Inspired by the Ministry of Billy Graham” at locations across central Pennsylvania and beyond throughout 2022. “Then Sings My Soul” is an original musical presentation featuring professional vocalists as well as accompanists from the Lancaster area. Highlighting important moments in the Rev. Billy Graham’s ministry, it includes a look at the history behind over 30 well-known hymns and songs of faith, many of which were made famous by or were written by people who accepted Jesus at Graham’s Crusades. Selections include “How Great Thou Art,” “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” “His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” and “Amazing Grace.” The production also includes an old-fashioned hymn sing. “Then Sings My Soul” features Lancaster locals Daniel Gorham, Sarah Poague, Kat Prickett, and Ric Zimmerman. Katrina King, an 18-year-old New Holland-area resident, is the pianist. Now in its fourth year of touring, “Then Sings My Soul” premiered in August 2018 in a barn at writer and producer Prickett’s family business, The Red Caboose Motel & Restaurant in Ronks. It has since toured across Pennsylvania and New Jersey and to Dollywood Theme Park in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. The performers seek not only to entertain audiences, but also to educate them on hymns and their history, share the Gospel message, and honor Graham’s memory.
In 2022, the program will travel to numerous churches, events and retirement communities in the Lancaster, York, Cumberland, Lebanon and Berks County areas, as well as the historic 6,000-seat Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, N.J., where Graham preached several times throughout his ministry. Bob Neff Tours will provide motorcoach transportation for the concert on Sunday, July 24. The outing will include roundtrip transportation, a morning worship service, free time in Ocean Grove, and admission to the 7 p.m. concert, which will also feature guest speaker David Branham, regional manager with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. To reserve a seat, contact Bob Neff Tours at info@bobneff tours.com or 717-397-0000. Central Pennsylvania performances will take place on the following Sundays: May 1 at 2:30 p.m. at Lancaster Alliance Church, Lancaster; May 22 at 9 a.m. at Windsor Church of God, Windsor; July 10 at 7 p.m. at Mount Gretna Tabernacle, Mount Gretna; July 17 at 7 p.m. at Rosedale Camp Meeting, Reading; July 31 at 3 p.m. at Salem Hellers Church, Lancaster; Aug. 21 at 3 p.m. at Lititz Springs Park, Lititz; Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. at Summit Grove Camp Meeting, New Freedom; Sept. 11 at 10:10 a.m. at Hopeland United Methodist Church (UMC), Lititz; and Sept. 18 at 9 a.m. at Wrightsville Hope UMC, Wrightsville. ner rolls, and dessert served buffet-style. After people’s bellies were full, their ears were graced with the sound of 36 voices from the SLCCC Crescendo Choir. The choir performed a variety of songs, including “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “Africa,” “Bill Bailey, Won’t You Please Come Home?” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” “This year has been awesome,” said Crescendo Choir director Rebecca Hess. “We have more choir members this
Launching Urban DAY CAMP
Isaiah 40:31
Join us June 1st Since our founding in 1954, Black Rock Retreat’s mission has been spreading the gospel and strengthening the church. Over the years, more than 850 campers received full or partial sponsorship through the Black Rock Retreat Sponsorship Fund. This year, through partnerships with inner city organizations and churches, Black Rock Retreat will launch our first ever URBAN DAY CAMP. This will allow more inner-city kids to have the opportunity to experience summer camp.
Featuring special guest speaker

Black Rock will provide bus transportation to a partnering church just minutes away from where the kids live. Their ballfield will be beautifully and creatively transformed into a place where kids can be kids! Lunch and snacks will be served daily, and the children will have the opportunity to participate in archery, games, and more. From 9:30am to 3:30pm throughout the month of June, we aim to serve 150 kids in the first year alone.
tered recovery program for individuals experiencing addiction, trauma, and more. A group from Celebrate Recovery meets at Providence Church, which is where Crescendo Choir rehearses on Monday nights. As a result, SLCCC has become aware of this organization’s mission. If individuals show their spring concert programs to staff at Son’s Ice Cream, 319 W. State St., Quarryville, then Son’s will donate 15% of these customers’ proceeds to Celebrate Recovery. “Providence Church is very generous; they have never charged us for anything, so this is just a way for us to give back to a mission that the church is trying to support,” explained Hess. Auditions for the Crescendo Choir are held twice a year. Interested singers are asked to come to auditions with a prepared song to be performed a capella, or without accompaniment. At the audition, prospective members will be asked to sing through several vocal exercises so that SLCCC members can evaluate the individual’s accuracy of pitch, depth of range, and ability to read music. Those interested in auditioning can email slcchoirs@outlook.com.

year than we’ve ever had. My favorite part is just getting up in front of that group, pushing them to sing more and better than they think that they can.” The Crescendo Choir consists of singers from the Solanco community and beyond who have been rehearsing together since midSeptember. The choir is a program that exists under the umbrella of SLCCC, a nonprofit focused on providing quality music experiences and education to singers of all ages. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SLCCC went a year without rehearsing and performing. The annual dinner and concert fundraiser is the only event where the organization collects money for itself. “I’m excited to see how our community has come together and brought music back to life again, and even if they’re not up there on stage, it’s great to see the community supporting it,” stated Hess. The Crescendo Choir will perform a spring concert at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence, on Sunday, May 15, at 4 p.m. The concert will be free to the public, but donations will be accepted and given to Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-cen-
Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes & Crematory has purchased properties in Lancaster and Millersville that formerly were known as the Andrew T. Scheid Funeral Homes. The addresses are 121 S. Prince St. and 131 S. Prince St. in Lancaster and 320 Blue Rock Road and 321 Old Blue Rock Road in Millersville. By adding these buildings into their service offerings and operations, the Snyders plan to give the properties new meaning and a positive future that serves to bring the community closer together. “We believe that this is the first step in healing the community and imagining a bright future for this historic property,” said Chad Snyder. The Snyders will primarily use the new facilities in a support capacity to expand and enhance the services offered at their existing six Snyder funeral homes, including the new Willow Street location set to open this summer. The Sny-
ders estimate that following significant updates and remodeling, the Millersville properties will open this summer and the Prince Street event properties will follow later in the year. The Snyders hope to convert the building at 121 S. Prince St. into an event space that can be used for postfuneral and memorial luncheons, alternative funeral services, and life celebrations, as well as for non-funeral related gatherings, events, seminars, rehearsal dinners, and nonprofit engagements. Other features of the property include a parking lot and a secondary office building for Snyder’s operations. The Snyders intend to preserve the architecture of the building, a four-story French Parisian Beaux-Arts style structure created in the 1890s. The neighboring building at 131 S. Prince St., a Victorian townhome, will be used as administrative space after renovations. See Funeral Home pg 13

In addition to the location and architecture, the Snyders acquired the properties on Prince Street so they can provide catered food services. The Snyders will not license them as a funeral home, as Pennsylvania law prohibits the sale of food in a funeral home. The Snyders plan to add a food staging area and catering kitchen for catered funeral luncheons, seminars, life celebrations, and more. “This new event space will open the door to a myriad of new ways that we can connect with the Lancaster community,” said Chip Snyder. Renovations have already begun at 320 Blue Rock Road. The Snyders will move their affiliate cremation company, Cremation Services of Pennsylvania Inc., to this location. In 2017, the Snyders acquired the Preneed Family Associates prepaid cremation book of business. Snyder Funeral Homes also previously was a partner in the Lancaster County Cremation Society and will move those prepaid services to Blue Rock Road. The facilities will include dedicated space for a newly renovated nondenominational service room, a cremation selection room for urns and keepsakes and a space for family viewings prior to cremation. The Snyders’
Millersville location will also provide vehicle and equipment storage and even housing for some of the Snyder staff members. The Snyder family has lived and served in Lancaster for three generations and has served the Lancaster County community for 75 years.

Additionally, the organization offers low-cost veterinary services for dogs and cats. There is also a trap, neuter, and return (TNR) program through which feral cats are captured in a humane trap, brought into the Pet Pantry, spayed or neutered, then released where they were found. The organization also rescues animals and puts them up for adoption. Cats are housed on the property while dogs are fostered until adopted. According to development director Lindsay High, stud-

was great and each year since we have worked tirelessly to be a trusted resource in our community.” Every year the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County provides homes for an average of 400 rescued animals, serves 1,000 feral cat TNR surgeries, and offers over $250,000 in veterinary care. After bouncing around locations as the organization grew, the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County moved to its current location, 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, in 2014. Like cats, the build-
ies have shown that fosterbased dog programs are better for a dog’s mental wellness. Individuals who foster the dogs get insight into the animal’s in-house behaviors and preferences, which is information unattainable in a shelter situation. “Our ultimate goal is to meet the need,” said Sanders. “We have redefined what it means to provide accessible, equitable animal welfare services to families throughout our community. When we founded the organization, we knew the need
ing itself has had many lives. It was first a residential home, then it became a police station, changed into a real estate office, and currently accommodates the Pet Pantry. Due to the intended purpose of the structure, it is not ideal for the organization’s needs. High noted that the location has an odd layout with several ineffective spaces, but by purchasing the property, the organization can customize the space to fit its needs. The surgical wing will be the first area renovated, which will provide the organization with the opportunity to expand veterinary services and bolster animal care. “We are most excited to be able to secure the future for animals in our community, so by buying the building, we will be here forever, and our services will be accessible to more community members,” stated High. To holistically meet the community’s need for animal care services, the organization plans to provide a free vaccine clinic this summer, a 100-cat TNR clinic this fall, and a holiday pet food drive in the winter. Volunteer and foster opportunities are available. To learn more, visit www.petpantrylc.org.
