Chicken barbecue will benefit Haiti

Students to hold greenhouse sale

On Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6, students in the Garden Spot FFA will host a greenhouse sale at Lampeter-Strasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. On Friday, the sale will take place from 3 to 6 p.m., and on Saturday, it will be held from 7 a.m. to noon.

A variety of herbs, vegetables and flowers will be available to purchase during the sale. Payment must be via cash or check; credit cards will not be accepted.

The sale will serve as a fundraiser for the Garden Spot FFA as well as the greenhouse located on the high school’s campus. Students in

the Garden Spot FFA and the landscape and plant design class at the high school began transplanting and seeding plants in the greenhouse in January. The money raised from the sale will help to alleviate the cost for the students to attend field trips, leadership conferences, FFA conventions and competitions. The funds will also be used to purchase supplies for the greenhouse such as potting mix, plants, seeds and fertilizers. Previously, the yearly sale was only available to students and staff members in the school district, but the school decided to open it to the public to spark interest in the greenhouse and its related programs.

Haitians

Helping Haitians for Christ (HHH) will host its fifth annual fundraising chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 13. The event will be held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meal tickets are available to prepurchase online at https://tinyurl.com/HHHbbq, and meals purchased in advance must be picked up by 1 p.m. on the day of the event.

Included with the purchase of a meal will be a quarter-chicken, a roll with butter, applesauce, chips, a whoopie pie and a drink. Quarterchickens will also be available to purchase individually at a discounted price.

All proceeds from the event will benefit HHH and its projects aimed at helping those in need in Haitian communities. The nonprofit organization seeks to meet the physical, developmental and spiritual needs of those in Haiti, which it accomplishes

in a variety of ways, such as providing meals for children on a weekly basis. Although the violence and dangerous conditions in Haiti have limited the number of physical service trips HHH can take to the country, the organization continues to donate food and supplies to orphanages and community development projects. “It’s a time of great need in Haiti. We want to be able to continue meeting the needs of the people in these communities,” said Betty Estime, cofounder of HHH. “Our hope is to provide opportunities for Haitians by creating long-term sustainability.”

Two years ago, HHH began construction on a community center in Haiti to offer locals classes on trades, leadership seminars and children’s programs. Once a year, the community center offers a camp for local children. Currently, HHH is working on the addition of a second floor to the community center, which it hopes to use to add dormitories and additional classrooms. With the additions of the second floor, the community center

will be able to host weeklong events that will be open to those outside of the immediate area. HHH’s goal for expanding the building is to have those from other communities acquire new skills and leadership abilities while visiting and benefit their own areas upon their return.

Betty founded HHH in 2018 with her husband, Elage Estime. Betty and Elage met in 2010 during a mission trip in Haiti. Betty, who is a nurse at Lancaster General Hospital, was visiting to assist with the medical needs of locals after an earthquake devastated the country. Elage, who grew up in Haiti, was working as a coordinator for Mission Possible, a nonprofit organization focused on fostering leadership skills in poverty-stricken communities abroad. After marrying in 2012, Betty and Elage lived in Haiti for two and a half years to continue their shared mission of helping those in the community. After moving to the United States, they continued to make trips to Haiti until the conditions became too dangerous.

Elage overcame many hardships as he grew up in Haiti; his father died when Elage was 14, and his mother had seven other children. When missionaries visited his community, they gave Elage a job cleaning a local church. He used the money that he earned to help other children in his community. “I feel so grateful because God gave me

the ability to give back what I’ve received,” Elage said. “Betty and I don’t have any children of our own, but we care for many children through the mission.”

The Gabriel Chamber Ensemble consists of Simon Maurer and Dana Allaband on violin, Agnès Maurer on viola, Ai-Lin Hsieh on cello and Xun Pan on piano. Now in its 34th season in Schuylkill County, the ensemble offers a wide selection of chamber music masterpieces and features invited professional guest artists.

In addition, the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble has initiated community and educational outreach programs to develop chamber music audiences and the musicians of the future. To further its mission, the ensemble created the Gabriel Youth Orchestra to provide an opportunity for middle and high school students from throughout the region to play in a professionally managed and conducted setting.

The first LIPF concert in the series, held in October, featured award-winning virtuosic prodigy Qianxiang “Daniel” Ma, a junior at Lancaster Mennonite High School who is instructed by Pan, and the second concert, in February, showcased cellist Hai-Ye Ni in a joint performance with Pan. Tickets are available at www.lancastertrust.com or www.lbc.edu/events.

Sensenig receives L-S Baseball Alumni Award

On April 21, Chad Sensenig received the 2023 LampeterStrasburg Distinguished Baseball Alumni Award prior to the Pioneers’ game against Conestoga Valley. This designation began in 1999 to honor past Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) baseball players and coaches for their outstanding performance while playing or coaching baseball at L-S and beyond.

Sensenig, a 1991 L-S graduate, played baseball for four years, earning three letters, and went on to play baseball at Millersville University.

As a high school junior, Sensenig led the section in home runs and RBIs, stole 11 bases, had a batting average of .441, was named first team All-Section for third base, and was named team MVP.

In his senior year, Sensenig was named first team All-Section pitcher as well as MVP and team Most Valuable Pitcher. He was named to the Lancaster-Lebanon League All-Star Team. He was sixth all-time in strike outs with 96 in a single season and fourth all-time in innings pitched in a single season. His career batting average was .356. He was in the top 10 in career triples, seventh alltime in career strikeouts and eighth all-time in career

innings pitched. Sensenig was the only L-S player to ever reach the All State American Legion East-West All-Star Team, which he accomplished in 1991. He threw a no-hitter in first-round district playoffs.

At Millersville University, Sensenig was named Freshman of the Year in 1992, batted .441 in PSAC with an overall batting average of .341, and led the team in stolen bases

with 10, which was a freshman record. He was 2-0 as a pitcher. Beyond college, Sensenig played fastpitch at a highly competitive level, winning several state championships and traveling to several national tournaments, where he made multiple all-tournament teams. He continued in sports by coaching youth baseball for seven years and Midget Football for six years.

Greenhouse sale frompg 1

The participating students in the landscape and design class had to create a budget and determine the cost of the materials required to cultivate the plants at the greenhouse. “Many of these kids have little gardens at home, but they don’t often get to see the process from seed to sale,” said Holly Oberholtzer, who teaches multiple agricultural science classes at LampeterStrasburg High School and co-

advises the FFA club.

The agriculture program at the high school includes classes such as veterinary science, small gas engines and landscape, and the FFA club serves as the leadership portion of the program. In June, the Garden Spot FFA club will travel to State College for the state FFA competition. The competition will provide an opportunity for students to develop public speaking skills and explore their prospective careers. For example, if students are interested in pursuing a career in veterinary science, they will be able to exhibit their skills via hands-on demonstrations and written exams. Oberholtzer said that for some students, these competitions highlight what skills they need to improve on in order to prepare for college. For others, it may reveal that the particular field is not what they wish to study after high school.

At school, Grace is the president of the National Honor Society and participates in the L-S High School Heroes Program, Interact Club, Varsity Club and chorus. She is a three-year member of the varsity volleyball team and an Academic All-Star for the 2022-23 school year, as well as a four-year member of the varsity swim team, for which she served as co-captain this season. She played the concert flute for two years, has been a member of the Mini-THON Club, and played Powder Puff football. She was selected to attend the State Leadership Convention sponsored by the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils (PASC) in 2022. The baseball team pushed its winning streak to seven over the last week with Section Two victories over CV

(5-1 on April 21), Solanco (8-2 on the 24th) and Lebanon (8-2 on the 26th). They currently sit on top of the standings with an 8-1 mark.

“The guys are doing a great

job right now,” said head coach Jeff Swarr.

The Pioneers battled back from a 1-0 deficit against the Bucks with a three-run third and then gained some breathing room with two runs in the sixth. Jason Long’s three-run, bases loaded double was the big hit of the day in Lampeter’s 4-hit final. Anthony Turek, Peyton Harsh and Will Bailey also collected hits and Turek went the distance on the hill with six strikeouts.

In Monday’s victory over Solanco, it was a five-run top of the fifth that powered the Pioneers. Long again sparked the inning with a three run double while Brenneman’s base hit pushed in two more.

Tureks’ solo home in the sixth made it 8-0 before Solanco managed single runs

in their last two at bats.

Harsh gave up one hit and one run over 5.2 innings, striking out four. Kyler Branco finished out in relief.

Wednesday L-S out hit Lebanon 8-7, scored four runs in the fifth and handed Lebanon an 8-2 loss. Harsh finished with two hits, Turek added two RBI and Long picked up the win, striking out five in six innings of work. Coe struck out one in the final inning.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

The lady Pioneers earned another win on Tuesday, April 25, and with it clinched the Section Two crown, Lampeter’s first. Hat trick performances by Bethany Stoltzfus, Ryann Logan (1a) and Rowan Kimmel sparked L-S to a fairly close 11-7 final at Elizabethtown.

The visitors led 6-3 at the half

and held off an E-town rally.

“They brought an intensity that caught us off-guard,” said head coach Marshall Krebs, “but our defense played steady, making the slides they needed to stifle E-town’s offense.

“Sophia Labrecque (2g, 3a, 2 caused turnovers) intercepted a ball on an Etown clear and took it to the house,” Krebs recalled. “This type of determination kept us ahead of Etown in the scoring column.

“Defender Emily Lapinsky had three ground balls and three caused turnovers and while they don’t show up in the stats, Molly Gochnauer, Rachel Lee and Ellie Moyer played consistent and disruptive defense as they have all season,” stated Krebs. “Offense gets the accolades, but defense is always there

to right the ship. Defense is what will carry us through an extremely competitive remainder of the regular season and playoffs.”

Zoe Dilling needed two saves to pick up the ‘W’, facing 9 shots.

TRACK

The track teams traveled to Manheim last Monday, April 24 where the Barons dealt them a pair of losses.

The boys won two relays and swept the mile but suffered an 89-61 loss after winning just seven (of 18) events. Yasin Abdi won the triple jump, was third in the long jump and teamed with Carson Coleman, Owen Keener and Liam Lutz for a 4x100 victory.

Ben Devine led a sweep in the mile with Luke Smith (2nd) and Owen Witmer (3rd) following. He also ran the second leg of the winning 4x800 with Colin Whitaker, Smith, and Andrew Cramer. Whitaker also finished second in the 800 behind Stoner’s impressive 1:57.2 and settled for second in the 3200 behind Michael Colosi’s winning time of 10:46.

Also in the field, Aidan Wiley cleared 11-6 to win the pole vault.

The girls had a tougher time as Manheim won all but three events en route to a 99-49 home win.

“Maggie Swarr had a great day, winning the javelin (132’) and the discus with a big PR of 110-8,” said head coach Cal Esh. “She was also second in the shot.”

Lampeter also picked up a win on the track with the 4x100 team of Maya Brenneman, Natalie Holland, Maddie Weichler, and Toni Heiserman recording a 52.0. Brenneman was also second in the 100 and third in the 200 behind Weichler. Holland went on to claim second in the pole vault with Meadow Shussler grabbing third.

Also in the field, Elly Brunner went up against Division One recruit Maddie Knier and came away with seconds in the high, long, and triple jumps.

TENNIS

After clinching the Section Two title with a 4-3 thriller over Cocalico, the Pioneer racket club toppled Pequea Valley (12-1), the Section Three runner-up, in the quarterfinals of the L-L League tennis championships in Lampeter Friday, April 21.

Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family

Kyle Pawson and Owen

Lapp opened with an exciting win over Joel Peifer and Cole McAvoy at No. 1 doubles. They lost the first set 3-6 but rallied to win 6-4, 10-7.

At No. 2, Justin Gouger and Kenny Finn dominated with a 6-1, 6-0 win, meaning L-S needed just one singles victory to win. Spencer Teaman took care of that, holding off Hayden Winey 7-6, 6-3 after PV’s Wade Stoltzfus blanked Joe Fitzgerald at No. 1 singles.

That put L-S in the semifinals opposite undefeated Section One champ Cedar Crest on Monday, April 24. The Falcons, who defeated the Pioneers 5-0 on April 3, posted another shutout, this time 3-0.

“Cedar Crest is strong,” said head coach Mark Trach. “We actually had a 5-2 lead at second doubles (Gouger-Finn) in the second set when the match was called, and we were down 4-5 in the second set of No. 2 singles.”

Fitzgerald lost 6-2, 6-0. S. Teaman lost 6-0, 6-2 and Pawson and Lapp fell 6-0, 6-3.

“It looks like we will be either the 7th or 8th seed in districts,” Trach added.

SOFTBALL

The softball teams’ up-anddown season continued over the last week with a 7-2 win over CV on Friday, April 21, then a 5-4 loss to Solanco on the 24th.

“CV has a nice pitcher,” noted head coach Earl Rutledge, “but she dropped a fly ball that cost her three runs and some breathing room.”

L-S needed just two innings

to tally those seven runs. They plated four in the third, all with two outs. Paige Baxter’s (2-4, 1RBI) two-run double was the big hit.

CV got two back in the bottom of the fifth before L-S picked up three in the top of the seventh courtesy of Scranton’s dropped fly ball, scoring one, and Baxter’s second two run double.

Maura Savoca earned the win, striking out three over 4.2 innings. Ally Raub closed out with two strikeouts.

Three days later, the Pioneers out-hit Solanco 9-8, including a pair of home runs by Zuber, but couldn’t muster enough runs to pull out a win. They committed two errors in a tightly contested 5-4 loss in the team’s second round meeting.

“Solanco played much better defense this time,” said head coach Earl Rutledge. “I would have liked a fenced in ballpark. That cost us a couple of runs. They just have a nice team.”

Solanco opened with a three run second thanks to a solo homer, a run scoring triple, and an error.

L-S got two back in the top of the third on Zuber’s two run homer and Solanco came back with one in the bottom half to maintain a 4-2 lead. They loaded the bases in the fourth but managed just one run.

The Pioneers cut it to one in the top of the fifth on Raub’s groundout and another homer by Zuber, this one a solo shot.

Neither team threatened after that.

Chloe Meck, Zuber (3RBI)

and Mack each recorded two hits in the loss.

Maura Savoca went the distance with two strikeouts and one walk.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

A four goal, two assists by Colin Sullivan and 11 saves by Bryce Thomas highlighted Lampeter’s 13-10 non-league win over Dallastown Saturday, April 22. The hosts led 5-3 lead in the first quarter and were up 8-5 at the half. That proved to be enough as both teams tallied five second half goals.

Zach Lebrecque (3g, 2a), Chase Barber (3g, 2a) and Cole Lopez (2g) also scored multiple goals in the win.

April 25 the Pioneers tallied 14 straight goals for a dominating first half lead over winless Elizabethtown and settled for a 17-3 home victory. Labrecque topped the scoring in this section win with five goals and one assist. Sullivan led with three

assists and scored four times.

Jack Groff scored twice while Barber, Morgan Smith, KJ Kessler, Grant Filius, Cole Lopez, and T Stinson rounded out the balanced effort with one goal each. Alex Weese added an assist.

Rock Ford exhibit examines decorative arts

Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, has announced a new Focus Exhibit in the Snyder Gallery for its 2023 season. The exhibit is “The Market Town and the Metropolis: 18thCentury Lancaster and Its Artistic Connections to Philadelphia.”

Throughout most of the 18th century, Philadelphia remained the largest city in the American colonies and then in the fledgling United States. In many ways, it was America’s political, financial and cultural epicenter. During this same period, the borough of Lancaster was one of the largest non-coastal towns in America and was closely tied to Philadelphia both commercially and culturally. In addition to serving as a source of raw materials, food and supplies for Philadelphia as well as an important market for its elegantly crafted goods, Lancaster, through which passed the “great wagon road,” increasingly came to serve as Philadelphia and its port’s gateway to western settlement. This already strong connection was both manifested by and strengthened

with the completion of the Lancaster-Philadelphia Turnpike in 1794, the first longdistance macadam road in the new United States.

With Lancaster’s growing affluence and stronger ties to Philadelphia as the 18th century progressed, the connections between both in the fields of the decorative arts increasingly flourished. Lancaster furniture makers developed unique styles that, while clearly influenced by Philadelphia artisans, did not merely mimic them. Artisans, such as furniture makers Thomas Tufft and Peter Frick, worked in both Lancaster and in Philadelphia. Examples of works attributed to both men will be included in this exhibit and demonstrate influences from both Philadelphia and Lancaster.

The exhibit will also highlight local tastemakers who were exposed to new styles through their personal connections to Philadelphia and brought these styles to Lancaster. The exhibit will include a rare, late 18th-century Philadelphia Chippendale camelback sofa believed to have belonged to Judge Jasper Yeates; the sofa is part

Grief support group frompg

of a private family collection and has never before been publicly exhibited.

Also included among Lancaster County tastemakers were affluent persons who had their portraits painted in Philadelphia. The exhibit features a portrait of Lancaster County Judge Henry Slaymaker by John Hesselius and a portrait of Henry’s wife, Faithful Richardson Slaymaker, by John’s father, Gustavus Hesselius, an early Swedish immigrant to Philadelphia. These portraits are also part of a private collection and have not been publicly exhibited since 1971 at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

The Richard C. von Hess Foundation is the Founding Sponsor for this exhibit. This exhibit is also funded in part through a grant approved by the Americana Corner Preserving America Grant Program.

Admission to the 2023 Focus Exhibit is included with the purchase of an admission ticket. This Focus Exhibit will run through Tuesday, Oct. 31. For more information about Historic Rock Ford, visit www.historicrockford.org.

The Southern End group meets on the second Tuesday of every month and begins each session with a small devotion. Then, group leaders offer booklets and information on a topic that relates to mourning the loss of a child, with the materials often based in Scripture. For the rest of the meeting, which is generally one to two hours long, participants may ask questions and have an open discussion to share about their personal journey and struggles with loss.

BASIS also seeks to provide support for grieving parents beyond its monthly meetings. The group accepts contact information for those who

1

wish to speak or pray on the phone and mails out informational literature from its library. The group supports parents for up to five years by sending notes of encouragement on significant dates such as the birthday of a loved one and the anniversary of a loss. Once a year, BASIS hosts a free breakfast for parents, which includes a guest speaker.

“People can come just to listen. It’s a confidential and safe place,” said Dan Steinman, director of BASIS. “It doesn’t matter if you go to church or not. People come to share where they’re at, open up and say exactly how they feel.”

Dan and his wife, Phyllis, became participants of BASIS six years ago after the loss of their son. Although Dan refrained from attending the meetings at first, he eventually joined his wife in participating in the meetings, and says that it changed his life. “As a parent who has lost a child, a lot of things go through your mind,” Dan added. “I heard stories when I first went and understood what others were going through.”

Shortly after becoming involved with BASIS, Dan left his job to work for the ministry. He noticed that BASIS did not have a support group based in the Southern End,

FRI. MAY 12,

and he decided to start one. Dan became director of BASIS last year. “Parents never forget, but you can’t dwell on it. You have to have hope,” Dan said. “We can be a light for other people.”

HVMI is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Its founders, Tim and Cathy Sheetz, remain involved in the organization today and run the BASIS group in Akron. In addition to BASIS, HVMI also offers Bible clubs, summer day camps and activities for those with special needs.
