Jazz bands slate spring concert
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
OnTuesday, May 16, the Martin Meylin Middle School and Lampeter-Strasburg High School’s jazz bands will perform a free concert at Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg. Although the jazz bands’ concerts are typically held in the high school performing arts center, the school district moved the show to the park in the spring of 2021 as an added safety measure following the coronavirus pandemic. The new setting was well received by the community, prompting the school district to continue holding the concert at the park in the years since.
The concert will include performances from three separate jazz bands in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District. The middle school jazz band, comprising seventh- and eighth-grade musicians, will begin the show. After the middle school band performs, the Blue Band and the White Band will play. To perform with theBlue Band, students at
Lampeter-Strasburg High School audition and follow a more rigorous practice schedule to master advanced pieces of music. The White Band accepts all musicians from the school who wish to perform. While the middle school jazz band rehearses during the school day once a week, the Blue Band and the White Band convene after school to practice.
When selecting the music for the show, jazz band director Larry Royer tries to find pieces that will best suit the musicians in the program. For example, this year Royer decided to apply the talents of one of his senior trumpet players by incorporating a flugelhorn solo for her. Royer also included a feature for one of the band’s advanced guitar players. As the bands’ director, Royer added that he likes to include a variety of different styles for his students to perform during concerts, such as big band swing, bebop jazz and rock.
“I always think it’s fun to see which songs the students grow to
love the most, even if they haven’t heard them before,” Royer said. “They might not like some of the songs when they play it for the first time, but it ends up becoming a favorite. I try to pick good music, not necessarily just popular songs.”
The jazz band program in Lampeter-Strasburg School District has grown significantly over the years. When Royer first became a teacher at the high school 20 years ago, there was only one jazz band. Royer added that the program is driven by the students’ fondness for it and that jazz band has become increasingly popular with young musicians. Jazz band also provides an opportunity for seasoned musicians to step outside of their comfort zones and try new styles and instruments. In this year’s show, seven clarinet players will perform on saxophones, and one of the jazz band’s French horn players will play the trumpet. “The kids get excited about trying something new,” Royer said. “It’s a great outlet to perform and learn.”

On Saturday, May 18, motivational speaker and author Eleanor Isaacson will visit Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church, 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville. Isaacson, who lives in Willow Street, will give a talk titled “Surviving Nazi Germany During WWII,” and she will offer copies of her book, “Dancing From Darkness,” for both purchase and signing. The event will be free to attend, but donations will be accepted.
Isaacson was born in New Jersey in 1934. In 1936, Isaacson’s mother took her to Germany and returned to the United States without her. Isaacson grew up in Germany under Adolf Hitler’s regime and weathered the chaos brought on by World War II. In “Dancing from Darkness,” Isaacson describes what it was like to experience bombings and military occupation as a child in Germany, as well as how her faith in God helped her through difficult times. After the war ended, Isaacson returned to the United States at the age of 13 to be reunited with her mother. Although she had finally
returned to the country where she was born, Isaacson faced new trials and hardly spoke any English. Isaacson independently published “Dancing Fom Darkness” in 2017 after working on it for 60 years. A German publisher contacted Isaacson after the book’s release to ask her permission to translate the book to German. The German translation of the book is now carried in stores across Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Although the book was not officially published until 2017, Isaacson has been sharing her life story for the last 48 years as a motivational speaker.

The 16th annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing will be held on Friday, June 9, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and members of the public may sign up to play in teams of up to four players. All proceeds will benefit Good Samaritan Services (GSS).
GSS is a nonprofit organization that seeks to assist those experiencing homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties. First operating under the name Good Sam Shelter, GSS was

The organization currently has five locations, which are located in Lancaster city, Ephrata, Coatesville, Phoenixville and Kennett Square. “We’re really grateful to EPC for partnering with us for so long. It’s a fun way for people to get involved,” said Rachel Shelley, marketing and communications specialist for GSS. “Fundraisers like these make our growth possible and have allowed us to assist more people than ever before.” In the past year, GSS has served more than 600 people in the local area. Painting and politicizing
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Robert Frick has always loved history, focusing on the subject at Millersville University before becoming an educator and serving 45 years in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District, including 15 as superintendent. When Frick retired, he delved into his love of history, becoming a guide for walking tours, presenter for Quest for Learning, and author.
Frick will bring his love of local history to New Holland when he presents “They Made Lancaster Great” on Thursday, May 18, at 7 p.m. at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, for the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS). Frick’s multimedia presentation will focus on portrait painter Jacob Eichholtz and the attorney and politician Amos Ellmaker.
Residents to remember ambulance association
An event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of West End Ambulance Association (WEAA) will take place on Saturday, May 13, from noon to 5 p.m. at Maple Grove Community Center, 1420 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. All former crew members of WEAA are invited to attend, as are former crew members of St. Joseph Hospital Medic 1, a partner crew of WEAA. Attendees are invited to bring uniforms, pictures, papers, or other items to share. They may also bring refreshments to contribute to the spread.
WEAA was an all-volunteer, nonprofit ambulance association founded in 1973. It started with one ambulance housed in a garage in the rear of Millersville Fire Company and grew to a fleet of four rigs and a building at 100 E. Charlotte St., Millersville. WEAA was replaced by Lancaster EMS (LEMSA) around 2007 or 2008. The building was given to LEMSA, and paid crews replaced the volunteers.

According to Frick, Eichholtz, who was born in Lancaster in 1776, was first a tinsmith who liked to decorate each item he produced. “He painted little flowers or animals on every pot or kettle he made,” said Frick, who noted that critiques of Eichholtz’s initial works were not kind.
“Some people … called it ‘hideous,’” he said. Eichholtz sought training from Gilbert Stuart, known for his portraits of George Washington. Frick noted the budding artist took along a piece of his artwork to gain Stuart’s constructive criticism. Eichholtz later lived in Lancaster and Philadelphia, working as a full-time artist, and eventually painting more than 800 portraits. Local subjects included ironmaster Robert Coleman and a number of his family members.
Mitch Dissinger, member of the NHAHS board and coordinator of the presentation, said he chose Ellmaker for Frick to discuss based on Ellmaker’s New Holland connections. “The Ellmaker Homestead and graveyard are south
of New Holland,” said Dissinger, adding, “(The family) owned the Kauffman Building, where the museum is, when it was a tavern.”
“Ellmaker was a local and national politician,” said Frick, of the prominent Lancaster citizen, who was elected to Congress in 1814 but never served because in 1815 the Pennsylvania governor appointed him to serve as a judge for Dauphin, Lebanon, and Schuylkill counties. In 1816, the governor appointed Ellmaker attorney general for the state. Ellmaker was an attorney, who had attended the Litchfield Law School located in New England. He had an office at 42 N. Duke St. in Lancaster, where he practiced law and helped train a lot of new attorneys.
Frick first began presenting talks based on his walking tours in 2014. In February, he presented his 500th program. His presentations are free, but any honorarium he receives is donated to the memory care program at Willow Valley Communities,
where he lives with his wife, Bonnie. He and Bonnie have worked together to turn his lectures into books, including “Together They Made Lancaster Great,” a book on the Founding Fathers, and one about the Supreme Court that focuses on six cases that changed the country.
The program is free and open to the public. More information about NHAHS may be found at https://nhhistorical.com or by searching for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook.

BY ANN MEAD ASH
On April 4, the sun shone brightly over the tent set up at the site along Hatville Road in Intercourse where the new Clinic for Special Children (CSC) will be built. Herman Bontrager, board chair of CSC and chair of the Keeping the Promise: Building Hope Capital Campaign, welcomed the gathering, noting, “We have a perfect day.” The groundbreaking and tree planting that occurred on the site not only celebrated the new building, but also commemorated the founding of CSC by Dr. Holmes Morton and his wife, Caroline, 34 years ago. “They had the vision and courage to establish a clinic to serve children with genetically transmitted diseases here in Lancaster County,” said Bontrager, who noted that the new building will help more families, allow for the innovation of new therapies, and be a place of comfort and hope for generations to come. He stated that more than 1,700 donors have contributed to the $8.8 million raised toward the $12.5 million goal of the campaign.
Adam Heaps, CSC executive director, pointed out that the need had outgrown the current facility in Strasburg. “We endeavored to design a (new) building that offers refuge to families with rare disease. Every detail of the building was designed for the benefit of patient families,” he said.
Glenn Zimmerman, a member of the board of directors and chair of the Gift in Kind committee, said that volunteers and donors to the Gift in
Kind campaign have unique connections to the CSC mission. “It is inspiring to see everyone come together for this monumental project,” he said, adding that the committee has secured more than $1.49 million in materials and labor.
John J. Herman, chief executive officer with Penn Medicine
Lancaster General Health, spoke of the collaborative relationship between his organization and CSC, telling the story of a patient born with spinal muscular atrophy who received gene replacement therapy shortly after birth. “Her life is forever changed,” he said. “The construction of this facility keeps state-of-the-art care here in Lancaster.”
County Commissioners Ray D’Agostino and Joshua Parsons spoke, as did Frank Howe, chair of the Leacock Township Board of Supervisors.
Idario Santos, whose son was born in Brazil with maple syrup urine disease, spoke of the difference CSC made
when the disease could not be treated in his home country.
“People ask what the clinic did for my son, but the question is really ‘What did the clinic do for my family?’” He said when his family came to the U.S. he saw children with the disease playing normally while his son had to be in the hospital. “He is the first patient cured from Brazil,” said Santos. “I know what the clinic can do for others like my family.”
Dr. Kevin A. Strauss, medical director for CSC, said, “The family of Idario Santos have shown us what it means to build hope. Hope is not so much a feeling but an act that demands our commitment and effort.” He added, “The future of the clinic is not in concrete, bricks, and mortar, but in the hearts of the people who seek our care. This project is our promise to them.”
The ceremony concluded with the planting of a tree. Richie Lauer, who gave the blessing, prayed, “If this tree
lives, it will be because (God) provided the nutrients, rain, and sunshine. If this clinic serves for generations to come, it will be because (God) provided the resources.” Board members hope the new clinic will open in 2024.
More information about the clinic may be found at www.ClinicforSpecial Children.org.

A prize drawing will occur at the end of the golf outing on June 9, featuring items that have been donated by local businesses. Prizes in the drawing will include items such as tickets to Longwood Gardens, an adventure package from Refreshing Mountain Retreat & Adventure Center, handmade wooden items, golf equipment and gift cards. The prize drawing will be open to players in the morning session and evening session; if a player’s name is drawn after he or she has left, the player will be contacted to receive the prize. This year, many local businesses have donated items for the prize drawing for the first time.
“It’s really neat to have fresh people involved and helping the mission,” said Rachel Stebbins, EPC’s marketing director. “People in Lancaster are very generous and are more than happy to support the cause.”
Food will be included in the cost of admission for the event. Peters’ BBQ will pro-
vide meals for lunch and dinner; breakfast from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. will be offered in the morning; and boxed lunches will be provided by Trio Bar and Grill. Drinks such as water and iced tea will be offered throughout
the day from a beverage cart. The funds raised from the EPC Golf Outing will support a variety of projects and initiatives that GSS has begun implementing this year. The Kennett Square facility was opened in December 2022, and the organization plans to break ground for a new office building in Ephrata this summer. The addition of the Ephrata offices will allow caseworkers to give their clients more privacy while assisting them; previously, staff members needed to share offices due to space limitations. GSS has also started to offer free, in-house counseling services to its clients.
By removing barriers such as cost and transportation, GSS hopes to give accessible support to clients who are experiencing trauma.
“There’s something about giving back that brings out the best in everyone. Everyone is excited to be there supporting GSS,” Stebbins said. “Whether you’re a regular golfer, a newbie, or somewhere in the middle, you’re going to have a great time.”
Registration for the EPC Golf Outing can be completed up to 48 hours before the event, but space will become limited after Friday, May 19. To register, visit https://epc golfouting.com/register.

L-S track teams sweep visiting Cocalico
BY MONA STEINHAUER
Under windy, rainy and cloudy skies, the Pioneer track teams rose to the occasion and swept the visiting Eagles of Cocalico on Monday, May 1. The girls got a four-win performance from Elly Bruner and three more from Maggie Swarr and pulled out an 87-63 win. A balanced effort by the boys, that included sweeps in the 3200 and long jump, led to a 90-60 home win.
Bruner claimed the long, triple and high jump along with the 300 hurdles and Swarr tripled, taking all three throwing events to pace the Pioneer scoring. Natalie Holland chipped in with the top time in the high hurdles and ran the opening leg of the winning 4x100 with Ongosi, Herr and Brenneman. She was second in the pole vault.
Kira Smecker won the 3200 and Immel pulled away to take the open 800.

“It was a real team effort for the boys,” said head coach Cal Esh. “Twenty-four different boys scored, but a sweep of the 3200 (Colin Whitaker, Ben Devine and Michael Colosi) and the long jump (Yasin Abdi, Owen Keener, and Artem Nebel) helped put us over the top.”
Abdi and Nebel also went 12 in the triple while Whitaker and Andrew Cramer did the same in the 800. Also on the track, Parker Stoner and Luke Smith took first and second in the mile and Eric Doutrich and Carter Weaver did the same in the 400. Smith, Devine, Cramer and Stoner opened the meet with a win in the 4x800 relay.
In the field, Aidan Wiley and Greyson Myers went 1-2 in the pole vault, Collin Shelley won the shot put and Jonathan Mellinger was second in the discus and third in the shot.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
Since a 10-9 loss to Cocalico on April 19, the boys’ lacrosse team put together six straight wins, including non-section wins over Hempfield (14-5 on April 29) and Penn Manor (12-10 on May 2). The Pioneers are currently ranked 4th in the District AA power rankings.
L-S posted a first-half shutout, 6-0, against the Knights Saturday morning and won the second half 8-5. Zach Lebrecque (4g, 2a), KJ Kessler (3g), Colin Sullivan (2g, 3a), Chase Barber (2g, 1a) and Gavin Denlinger (2g, 1a) all recorded multiple goals to pave the way.
In the “Whitey” game Tuesday night against the Comets, a 2-0 first quarter advantage proved to be the difference as the rest of the game proved to be an evenly matched contest with both teams scoring 10 goals each.
Sullivan (1a) and Denlinger both notched hat tricks with Kessler’s (1a) two goal effort as the only other multi-goal scorer in this balanced attack. Labrecque (1a), Morgan Smith, Jack Groff and Cole Lopez also found the back of the net.
Bryce Thomas recorded a combined 29 saves in the wins.
SOFTBALL
The softball team began its run of five straight games
with 6-3 loss to Solanco at Garrett Park Monday, May 1. Julia Gerard’s two run single in the second inning gave L-S an early lead. They made it 30 in the fourth when Ally Raub doubled in Maura Savoca with two outs.
Unfortunately, Solanco spoiled senior night when they batted around plus two in the sixth, collecting six runs on five hits, one walk and two errors. It was Solanco’s second come-frombehind win over the Pioneers.
“We played Solanco tougher than anyone in our section!” exclaimed head coach Earl Rutledge. “We loaded the bases in the first and did not score. That hurt. And that sixth inning killed us on misplays in the field. Most of their runs were unearned.”
Savoca, who finished with two hits along with Gerard, struck out five and walked one over the first 5.1 innings. Raub struck out two in relief.
Tuesday L-S spotted Lebanon three runs in the first inning but rallied with 13 in the bottom half and settled for a 19-4 win. Mackenzie Maki’s (6RBIs) fourth inning grand slam highlighted a 13hit attack aided by eight errors and five walks. Raub added three hits and three RBI. Brooke Zuber and Chloe Meck added two hits each.
Paige Baxter scattered five hits and struck out three in four innings of work.
Under the lights in Elizabethtown Wednesday, L-S pushed out to a 7-0 lead after four innings and led 8-4 after six complete, setting the stage for a high scoring seventh.
Raub’s (3hits, 4RBI) one-out, three-run homer highlighted a four-run seventh inning and capped a 12-7 victory over the Bears. Mackenzie Maki got things rolling with a 2-run homer in the second. L-S finished with 12 hits, five for extra bases.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
In their closest game of the season to date, the lady Pioneers extended an 8-7 first half lead with a 5-3 edge in the second half and topped Penn Manor 13-10 Tuesday night in Millersville.
Rowan Kimmel’s five goal effort matched the Comets’ Joelle Kroesen leaving a balanced effort after that making the difference. Abigail
Welchans, Bethany Stoltzfus (3g) and Sophia Labrecque each dished out two assists.
Leigha Saurbaugh scored twice with Hannah Cissne (1a), Ryann Logan and Trinity Wise adding one goal each.
The Pioneers were coming off their first loss of the season, a 15-5 result on Saturday, April 29 at Wyomissing.
“Our non-league schedule is deliberately more competitive,” said head coach Marshall Krebs. “Wins are nice, but the bigger picture is we
want to head into tough postseason play by playing some of the toughest teams in District 3. We will be playing five teams all ranked eighth or higher in AA and AAA.
“There were numerous positive takeaways from the game, but the play of Ellie Moyer stood out,” he added. “She was poised, scrappy on ground balls and played their ride perfectly.”
Kimmel (2a), Saurbaugh, Cissne, Logan and Labrecque (1a) were the goal scorers.

BASEBALL
After an 8-2 win over Solanco at Clipper Stadium and a 4-2 win over Ephrata a week prior, the baseball team fell short against both of those teams in back-to-back games early last week.
Solanco scored twice in the first inning on two walks, a groundout and a sac fly and both teams scored once in the third and again in the seventh to cap the scoring. L-S outhit the Mules 3-2 but committed four errors and couldn’t take advantage of eight walks.
Southpaw Peyton Harsh struck out seven and walked four in the loss. Jason Long went 2-4 to pace the offense.
Under the lights again Tuesday night, the Mounts moved a half a game ahead of L-S in a battle for the section title with a 6-2 result in Lampeter. After four scoreless innings, Ephrata scored all the runs they needed (3) in the top of the fifth. They added one in the sixth and matched Lampeter’s two run seventh to account for the scoring. The Mounts out-hit the hosts, who committed two errors, 7-3.
Anthony Turek got the start and fanned eight batters against four walks. Hayden Brinkman and Kyler Branco pitched in relief. Ephrata’s winning pitcher, Camryn Simes, fanned 11 and walked one over six and a third innings.
Harsh, Mason Coe and Branco all recorded hits.
Wednesday the Pioneers held a 6-5 lead after four complete but gave up a grand slam in the fifth and wound up dropping a 9-6 result to Elizabethtown. The Bears out-hit the Pioneers 10-5 and took advantage of three errors and seven walks.
TENNIS
Cole and Seth Teaman picked up a pair of wins in L-L League Flight two doubles action. They opened with an 8-4 win over Elco’s Long and Lovell and then topped Wall and Stichler of N. Lebanon before bowing out in the semifinals, 6-1, against Township’s Tayler and Chisasammy.
Justin Gouger and Kenny Finn followed a similar path in Flight 3, topping Penn Manor’s Clark and Chatha 8-2 and blanking Lancaster Mennonite’s Martinez-Ortega and Kauffman. Their tournament ended with an 8-4 loss to Township’s Tanna and Hager, the eventual winners.
In Flight 3 singles, top seed Spencer Teaman blanked LM’s Matt Friesen and beat Ephrata’s Caleb Zimmerman 8-1 before bowing out 8-3 against AC’s Matej Hmcir.
