Auction from pg 1 an Airbnb rental in Mifflin County and a trout fishing trip. Also featured will be 100 pounds of ground beef in 10-pound packages from a local farm. The silent auction will run from 5 to 7 p.m., with winners announced and items distributed at 7:30 p.m. The live auction will begin at 6 p.m. All sales will be cash only, and items or the information needed to collect them will be given out that evening. Attendees must be present to bid and purchase. Food will be available from 5 to 7 p.m., including Chick-fil-a sandwiches, barbecue from Mission BBQ, chips, side dishes and beverages. Helping with the auction and food sales will be the students who will directly benefit from the event. GCC Youth, open to students in sixth through 12th grades, meets year-round on Wednesday evenings. There are also two major summer mission trips that are the highlights of the year for students. About 20 students will go to Boston from Sunday, June 12 through Saturday, June 18, where they will work with Next Step Ministries to help Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston renovate its facility, which serves hundreds of children throughout the year. “We’ll be doing light construction projects, painting and dry-

walling,” youth pastor Kevin Lance said. “It’s a very different cultural experience as well as a good spiritual experience.” The second trip, set for Monday, July 18, through Sunday, July 24, will take students to the Momentum Conference, held by Momentum Ministry Partners at Indiana Wesleyan University. “It’s essentially a conference that help students connect their faith with real life to help them get a deeper perspective on how their faith impacts their everyday life and how to take their faith out into the world,” Lance explained. Proceeds from the auction will help cover travel and trip expenses for the students. Each student receives a scholarship to cover costs. “One of the things we really emphasize in our ministry is we never want anyone not to be able to attend the trip because of financial concerns,” Lance said. “We hold this auction and events like this so we can offer these trips affordably for our students.” Grace Church is located at 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street. For more information, call 717464-5333 or visit www.gccws.net. More information about the auction is available by visiting www.facebook.com/gccws and choosing Events.

Sit, Stay: Selecting An Easier-To-Train Dog Training is one of the most important ways to keep companion animals safe. When prospective pet owners begin looking for a new dog, one of the first thoughts that may come to mind is trainability and whether certain breeds are more easy to train than others. The pet food manufacturers at Honest Kitchen indicated that breed

is just one of many factors that can make a difference in how easily a dog will be trained. For example, dogs that are food-motivated and enjoy being around people may be more easily trained than those without such traits. How the animal was bred, raised and socialized can also play a part. The American Kennel Club reported that certain dogs are

more willing to comply with owner requests, while others are bred to work independently and may be less likely to immediately respond to commands from their owners. Though there is no guarantee any dog will take to training, the following are some breeds that are generally considered training-friendly. - Border collies: Collies are bright and energetic dogs that like to herd with their agility and intelligence. - Australian shepherd: Another herding dog, Aussies have a natural focus on their owners and are bred to work with those owners in challenging environments. - Doberman pinschers: Dobermans are smart and attentive to their owners. They have traditionally been employed as guard dogs and require careful training and socialization to be tolerant of strangers. - German shepherds: These workhorses serve many different roles because of their affinity for learning tasks. As with Dobermans, look for a well-socialized German shepherd to avoid anxiety and wariness of people.

Meet Ben And Eden: Available For Adoption

Meet Eden! This senior lady is available to be adopted from the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center. She came to the shelter as a stray and now is longing for a new life of luxury. Eden still has plenty of energy and enjoys walks and playing fetch in the yard. This lovely gal doesn’t like other dogs, but she adores every human she meets. Eden is hoping to find her furever home soon because shelter life doesn’t suit her. If interested in adopting Eden, call the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center at 717-917-6979 or email lancaster@pspca.org.

Meet Ben! This 6-month-old boy is available for adoption from the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center after finding himself at the shelter again. Ben takes some time to warm up to new people, but once he does, he is incredibly loving; his favorite activity is headbutting and begging for scratches. He might be a little spicy at times, but he enjoys the finer things in life, like sunbathing, batting around toys, and harassing his people! - Poodles: Poodles are popular because they do not shed much, but also because they are intelligent, obedient and versatile. - Golden retrievers: Golden retrievers are not known as a family dog for nothing. Goldens are very intelligent and amiable, and they often will go to great lengths to please their owners. Labrador retrievers also take to training well and are very affectionate. - Papillon: Smaller dogs are often viewed as stubborn or independent. However, papillons are incredibly smart and trainable and are naturally focused. The pet advisement site K9 of Mine warned that some of the smartest, most trainable dogs may not necessarily be the easiest to live with. They can get bored easily and destroy things around the house if they cannot keep their minds occupied. This is a factor to consider when selecting a breed as well.

ting the 100 careers goal mark against CY. She hit that mark on the nose with three goals and added three assists as well. “While goals scored is what everyone focuses on, my 100 goal scorers have even gaudier numbers in the draw controls, ground ball pickups and caused turnovers,” praised head coach Marshall Krebs. “They, Rowan Kimmel (76g, 30a) and Hanna (51g, 27a..as of MT), aren’t just scorers; they are complete players and playmakers. And both of these accomplishments happened with both missing the infamous ‘Covid cancelled’ season.” Kimmel (7g, 3a) led the attack against CY and added eight goals and one assist against EY. “But we are also getting good production from sophomore Hanna Cissne (43g, 11a) and freshman Ryan Logan (33g, 8a) while senior Kelly Hostetter is third on the team with 27 assists,” added Krebs. Last Tuesday the girls hosted Warwick and improved to 12-3 overall with an 18-7 triumph. The hosts got a seven goal, two assist game from Kimmel and jumped out to a 12-5 first half lead. Gawne chipped in with a hat trick of goals and assists while Logan (3g), Cissne (2g) rounded out the double-digit scorers. TENNIS The tennis team opened postseason play over the last week as they competed in the LancasterLebanon League Flight Championships where Andrew Reidenbaugh rose to a second place finish in Flight 2. Seeded 5th, Reidenbaugh topped Elco’s Trevor Spang and Cocalico’s Max Hershey in straight sets before facing Nick Keener in the semifinals. Keener upset the top seed Steven Dupler

In the finals, he dropped a 6-4, 6-3 match to LCD’s Carson Weigle, the No. 2 seed. In Flight 1, Weston Weaver drew No. 2 seed Michael Georgelis (MT), who advanced to the finals, and bowed out with a straight set loss. In Flight 3 seventh seed Spencer Teaman dropped a tough one to McCaskey’s Jared Groff, 6-2, 5-7, 12-10. Cole Teaman had a tough draw in Flight 4, taking on top seed Gonzalo Diez Vilarino (LCD), who advanced with a 7-6, 6-1 win. BASEBALL The baseball team faced Lebanon (the 29th), and Etown (May 2nd) over the last week and remained in the hunt for a Section Two title with wins. Against the Cedars the Pioneers’ Gehrig Harsh (3-3 with a double and 3RBI) led a 10-hit effort while Parido was 2-3 with a triple and 2RBI in the 9-4 victory. L-S scored runs in each of the first five innings, taking advantage of four errors and two walks. Peyton Harsh picked up the win with seven strikeouts, three walks and four hits over 5.1 innings. Mason Coe gave up one hit, struck out one and walked two in relief. Monday night against the Bears, L-S fought off a 2-0 deficit to win 6-4. The hosts scored four in the fifth, courtesy of Parido’s grand slam, to gain momentum, gave up two in the sixth and picked up an insurance run in the bottom half to stay in front. Gio Malatesta and Brayen Adams were both 2-3. Jason Long struck out six, walked three and gave up seven hits in six innings to get the win. Gehrig Harsh, with two strikeouts in the final inning, got the save.
