Lampeter-Strasburg

During the Civil War, numerous Americans who lived throughout the Northern and Southern states risked their safety to help free slaves and to aid people who sought an escape from the violence. Despite the South being occupied by those loyal to the Confederate cause, many Southerners opposed the conflict, and they operated right under the enemy’s nose to hide escaped slaves and refugees of the war. As the nation pieced itself back together after the war, most of these Americans’ stories remained untold to avoid residual conflicts among neighbors. This included the story of Peggy Rhodes, until Karl Rhodes, her great-greatgrandson, stumbled upon a piece of long-lost family history.
On May 9, Karl visited Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, to discuss his novel “Peggy’s War,” which details Peggy’s efforts to help Americans who sought to escape the bloodshed of the Civil War. Peggy was a Union loyalist and Mennonite woman who lived in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia during the war. As violence ravaged the country, Peggy hid other Mennonites and members of the Church of the Brethren who refused to participate in the war in a secret cellar beneath her farmhouse. Peggy protected draft-dodgers until they could safely escape the region, and they often found refuge in
Pennsylvania.
“The people who ran the Underground Railroad were mostly Mennonites and members of the Church of the Brethren, and there were large numbers of them in both Virginia and Pennsylvania,” Karl said. The event at Mennonite Life also highlighted several Mennonite hymns commonly sung by refugees as they made their escapes.
The current members of the Rhodes family had no prior knowledge of Peggy’s story, although a few rumors related to the Civil War circulated among
Karl RhodesKarl and his siblings. One rumor spoke of caves near the family home that contained stockpiles of weapons abandoned by deserters. When Karl was 4 years old, his brothers convinced him to crawl down a narrow shaft that they believed to be full of Civil War-era weapons. Young Karl never found the fabled arms, but the endeavor sparked his lifelong interest in the history surrounding the Rhodes’ family home. While conducting gene alogy research many years later, Karl finally stumbled upon a book series titled “Unionists and
the Civil War Experience in the Shenandoah Valley.” The books contain testimonies from many Southerners who sought compensation for land and livestock that were taken or destroyed by Union forces during battle, including more than 20 pages of testimony from Peggy and her family mem bers. “People often oversimplify life during the Civil War; many Americans in the South didn’t want to fight a war or secede,” Karl said. “This story gives a very
The annual Strasburg Memorial Day Parade will take place on at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 27. The procession will include representatives from various local service organizations, marching bands, veterans and active-duty members of the armed forces, as well as any member of the community who wishes to take part in the event.
For more information, visit https://peggyswar.com.
Parade participants will begin to gather along Clearview Drive in Strasburg at 8 a.m. Additional floats will not be accepted after the start of the parade. The procession will follow its traditional route through downtown Strasburg, making its first stop at Wesley United Methodist Church’s cemetery on West Main Street. Parade spectators will be asked to pay respect to the many veterans buried at the cemetery by observing a moment of silence before the parade resumes. The convoy will make its second stop at the graveyard at Saint Michael’s Lutheran Church, 40 E. Main St., Strasburg, where participants will observe a second moment of silence to honor the veterans buried within. Members of local Girl
Scout troops will place flowers at each cemetery. After visiting both churches, the parade will proceed to the War Memorial in Strasburg’s town square, where a color guard comprising local veterans will facilitate a flag-changing ceremony. After the conclusion of the parade, all attendees will be invited to walk to Strasburg Cemetery, 50 W. Franklin St., Strasburg, for a Memorial Day service at 10:30 a.m. The service will feature an address from guest speaker Vince Turner, who will discuss the meaning and significance of the holiday. In the event that the parade is canceled due to inclement weather, the memorial service will take place in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St., at 10:30 a.m.
Every year, the parade includes performances from the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band and the Lampeter-Strasburg High School and the Martin Meylin Middle School marching bands. Strasburg residents who live on Main Street are encouraged to adorn their yards with flags and patriotic decorations prior to the parade. Members of local Boy Scout troops, the Strasburg Lodge of Odd Fellows and volunteers from the community will place flags provided by the National VFW along the parade route.
“It’s just a good old-fashioned community parade,” said Brian Barr, parade chairman and member of the Strasburg Area Sertoma Club, which organizes the event every year. “A lot of it is farm tractors and pickup trucks, and people are always
lined up in rows from the beginning of the parade route to the end.”
The Strasburg Memorial Day Parade is a community tradition started by the Paul R. Strubel VFW Post 8710 more than 70 years ago to honor the veterans who fought in the Civil War. Members of the local Sertoma Club took over coordination of the event roughly 16 years ago, and they continue to host it annually and collaborate with former members of the VFW post, which is no longer active. For more information or to register a parade float, contact Barr at sgt30th@ yahoo.com.

Geographically, it’s a 9-mile northwest move. Developmentally, it’s a move in a different direction.
Eastern Mennonite University at Lancaster (EMU at Lancaster) is on the move. In two months, the private liberal arts university based in Harrisonburg, Va., will officially relocate its Lancaster campus from East Lampeter Township to Warwick Township.
“It will provide more modern space for our students,” said Christine Sharp, EMU at Lancaster’s executive director. “The common space is large and open. We’ll be closer to the (Lancaster) airport.”
Located within the Greenfield Corporate Center at 1846 Charter Lane, Suite 212, Lancaster, for the last 30 years, EMU at Lancaster is moving
its four classrooms to the Listrak building at 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz, in time for summer classes to begin July 1. The move will provide EMU at Lancaster with an additional 5,000 square feet for classrooms, a certified nursing assistant (CNA) training laboratory, student advisory areas, a cafeteria and coffee bar, ample parking and outdoor space.
EMU at Lancaster executed a multi-year lease and plans to perform some minor upgrades to the property’s infrastructure, information technology and communications.
“We take pride in our sense of community and serving our community, whether it’s through credited or non-credited courses,” said Sharp. “Our mission in Lancaster is to provide programs that aren’t available in other sectors. Our vision is to serve our students with
high-quality education.
Our goal is to have a building that’s welcoming to students and instructors. We’re moving to a stateof-the-art building.”
“Like many commercial landlords, we have re-evaluated our physical properties and have determined that we do not need the entire 93,000 square feet of our headquarters building,” said Ross Kramer, Listrak’s CEO. “As strong supporters of STEM (science, technology, engineering, math),
we felt that EMU at Lancaster would be a great fit and believe the new space will provide a learning environment conducive to students’ academic and professional growth.”
EMU at Lancaster’s current enrollment is over 400 students, but many attend through online courses. When the university opens its Warwick Township location, nearly 100 students are expected to attend weekly.
“The needs of today’s workforce are constantly
changing,” said Sharp. “EMU at Lancaster is committed to providing postsecondary education and professional development training that offers students a competitive advantage. Our mission is to ensure that those who complete our programs are well prepared to make valuable contributions to the workforce and communities.”
Eastern Mennonite University first established its local campus at a temporary location in Lancaster in 1996 before moving to Greenfield Corporate Center in 2002.
In addition to its CNA program, EMU at Lancaster offers a bachelor’s
degree in leadership and organizational management, with an aviation concentration. The university plans to add a drone technology education program this fall.
“We want to graduate students who are forward-thinking and life citizens,” said Sharp. “We want our students to have a global understanding. Our goal is to raise strong leaders with compassion, not only in their lives but also their professional lives. We’re here to provide a pathway to students who may not have thought of education before.”

This summer, the Center for Creative Exploration (CCE) at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design will offer more than 60 options for youth art classes and workshops as well as weeklong art camps. Pennsylvania farmers are returning to their fields for spring planting, which means that drivers should be alert for large farm equipment on rural roadways.
As part of Rural Roads Safety Week, April 14 to 20, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and its partners in the state government encouraged motorists to be cautious on roadways. Each year, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau partners with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and Pennsylvania State Police to spread the message of staying safe on rural roads during the height of the spring planting season.
Farm equipment can legally be operated on roadways, including at night, but farmers are required to follow certain safety guidelines depending on the size of equipment moved. All farm equipment that travels at speeds less than 25 miles per hour is required to have a slow-moving vehicle emblem - an orange triangle with red outline - on
the back of the equipment.
If drivers see the slow-moving vehicle emblem, they should slow down immediately. Drivers should be alert that farm equipment may be turning at an unexpected place, such as into a field, and may be making a wide left turn if it pulls to the right. Drivers should always be sure the oncoming lane is clear and visible before passing large equipment, and they should never pass in a no-passing zone or within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel. Drivers are also reminded to be patient, wear a seat belt, and not drive impaired or distracted.
PFB, along with representatives from PennDOT, the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, as well as state Sen. Wayne Langerholc Jr., held a demonstration and event promoting Rural Roads Safety Week at Bill and Joyce Krug’s Farm in Loretto on April 15. County farm bureaus across Pennsylvania also
hold local events in their communities to promote safe driving on rural roads.
For additional information about Rural Roads Safety Week and safety tips for drivers and farmers, visit www.pfb.com/RRS.

“It’s a way to get the community involved with something that’s going on in our own backyard,” said Alex Wagner, NSI’s marketing and communications director. “There’s a whole community that is super excited to play. The rules are easy to pick up. It’s something that’s fun and brings everyone together.”
The second edition of NSI’s pickleball tournament will be contested on Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Manor Middle School courts, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. In the case of rain, the event will be pushed back to the next Saturday, June 22, at the same time and place.
Teams of two players can register by going to www .northstarinitiative.org/ events before Friday, June 7.
“It’s a very family, fun atmosphere,” said Wagner. “There are tons of spectators and supporters. But there’s going to be a lot more going on than just a pickleball tournament. We also want people to know who we are as an organization.”
NSI’s pickleball tournament draw will be broken down into three divisions: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Each division can accommodate up to 25 teams.
The sponsored event will also include music provided by a DJ.
“It’s a mix of everyone,” said Wagner of individuals expected to attend. “It’s both supporters of NSI and pickleball players. It’s pickleball players who play regularly and neighbors. We’re hoping the brackets

will make the tournament more competitive.”
NSI had so much fun with its initial venture into the competitive pickleball world in 2023 that it decided to stage another tournament this year. Last year’s event netted over $4,000 for NSI, a total the nonprofit is hoping to double this year.
“All of the money raised will directly support our women going through our program at The House,” said Wagner. With facilities to support up to 10 residents, The Harbor is a safe house that provides support in the form of classes, therapy and life skills development.
“Different people have different capacities to give,” said Wagner. “No matter how big or small it is, it truly makes a difference in the lives of these women. NSI’s ultimate goal is to have survivors graduate and live a life of independence, whatever that looks like for them.”

“We were needing to fill a gap, and we were hearing pickleball all over the place,” said Wagner. “Someone in our office said, ‘Let’s try a pickleball tournament, just because of how popular it is.’ We were like, ‘Let’s give it a try.’ We honestly didn’t know how it was going to go, but it took off. Now we’re hoping to expand it and grow it into the future.”
