OnMonday, May 29, a Memorial Day parade will begin at 9 a.m., on Clearview Drive in Strasburg. The parade will feature several local service organizations, veterans and active-duty military members, and it will be open for the public to participate in.

“It’s an old-fashioned, patriotic parade,” said Brian Barr, parade

chairman and member of the Strasburg Area Sertoma Club. “It’s a way to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.”

The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band and the Lampeter-Strasburg High School and Martin Meylin Middle School marching bands will perform in the parade, accompanied by local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops. The procession will make stops at the cemeteries of Wesley United

Methodist Church and Saint Michael’s Lutheran Church. At each cemetery, members of the parade will lay flowers at veterans’ gravesites, and taps will be played.

Once the parade reaches the town square, a color guard made up of local veterans will change the flag. The procession will conclude at Strasburg Cemetery with a Memorial Day service, which will feature a keynote speaker and a few readings.

The service will end with a song.

The Strasburg Area Sertoma Club organizes the event each year with the goal of recognizing the original meaning of Memorial Day. The holiday was created to remember veterans who gave their lives during the Civil War and was first called Decoration Day. The cemeteries in Strasburg that the parade will visit contain many graves of veterans from as early as the Revolutionary War.

Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School musicians have earned several notable accomplishments.

Senior Maya Carl advanced to the district level in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) program for the second year in a row. She played alongside other standouts at the District 7 South Band Festival held from Feb. 9 to 11 at Warwick High School.

A number of L-S student musicians were chosen to participate in this year’s Lancaster-Lebanon Music Educators Association (LLMEA) High School and Middle School County Band South Festival. The event was held on Feb. 4 at Hempfield High School, and Lampeter-Strasburg’s middle and high school band director, Larry Royer, was the guest conductor for the middle school band.

High School County Band members are Trevor Groff, Lana Dyer, Justin Gouger, Katherine Helm, Lillianna Sanderson, Cole Beiler, Bethany Barrall, Drea Rice, Kaitlyn Pope, Noah Sanderson, Pearce Flory, Olivia Leed and Maya Carl. Middle School County Band members are Jackson Allison, Micah White, Cameron Straley, Cole Shehan, Evan Sauder, Garrett Fawber, Auburn Heinly, Anya Sheffer, Quinn Flory, Isabelle Henry and Rosalie Glick.

Fifteen L-S High School students were among the 225 local student musicians selected to play in this year’s LLMEA High School Orchestra Festival. The event was held at L-S High School on Feb. 18. Musicians rehearsed

Mulberry Art Studios to present exhibit

JJ Roach, who first debuted his artworks in a solo show at Mulberry Art Studios two years ago at age 17, will return to the studio in June to showcase his newest collection of art, titled “Surreal Detail.” The public is invited to meet the artist and view the artworks at a First Friday opening reception on June 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. Mulberry Art Studios, located at 21 N. Mulberry St. in downtown Lancaster, offers free parking in a private lot.

Roach, who has been diagnosed with autism and ADHD, said that he has been able to focus and channel his emotions through art. After his first art expo at Mulberry Art Studios, he displayed his creations at Night of Entrepreneurs in Harrisburg and at Hershey Gardens in Hershey. His artworks were also on exhibit at the Pennsyl-

vania Capitol last July. Most recently, his work “Celestial Dreams” won first place at “Art of the State,” a juried exhibition held at the State Musuem of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg.

Roach has been active in presenting charitable gifts of artworks to Aaron’s Acres, the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, the American Heart Association and The ARC of Lancaster.

“Surreal Detail” will run throughout June. Guests who wish to visit the exhibit but are unable to stop by during First Friday hours may contact gallery curator Stephanie Clayton-Kulfan at Stephanie .Mulberryart@gmail.com or 717-295-1949 to schedule a time to visit the gallery. For more details, search for Mulberry Art Studios on Instagram and Facebook.

Memorial Day parade

frompg 1

This is the 76th year that the parade will be held in Strasburg, a tradition that was started by the former Paul R. Strubel VFW Post 8710. Around 15 years ago, the VFW was unable to continue managing the parade, so many veterans of the former post collaborated with the Strasburg Area Sertoma Club to ensure that the tradition was carried on. “We continue to do it not only to honor veterans who gave their lives, but also to honor the guys who started the parade. It was important to them, and we want to make sure it continues,” Barr said.

Barr noted that anyone who lives along the parade route is encouraged to decorate their yard with flags and streamers, a tradition that residents of Strasburg began around seven years ago. “It’s always nice to see people celebrating the good things about this

try,” said Barr. “The patriotism I see is really neat, and I’d like to see it continue.”

Any veterans or active duty military personnel who wish to participate in the parade may contact Barr at sgt30th@yahoo.com for more information.

L-S baseball advances to L-L League final

The top two teams in Section Two competed in the Lancaster-Lebanon League finals on Monday, May 15 at Clipper Stadium. In a battle of two fairly even teams, Ephrata, the Section Two champs, pulled out a 4-3 thriller over the Pioneers. It was the Mounts first title since 2018 and their seventh overall.

“We have been to the finals three of the last four years,” said head coach Jeff Swarr, “and we have won the league championship three times. (1982, 1994, 2019)

“This was a great high

school baseball game,” he continued. “Both teams played quality baseball without making an error. They just got the timely hits in the third inning. Anthony Turek and Peyton harsh pitched well. Ephrata had five total hits and four were in the third inning, when they scored three runs.”

L-S scored two runs in the first inning. Jason Long’s double to center field plated Justin White who opened the game with a base hit. Turek followed with a walk and Luke Brenneman’s fielder’s choice pushed in Long.

Ephrata got one back in the

bottom half only to see L-S do the same in the top of the third on Long’s shot to right field. The Mounts again responded, scoring three runs on back-back-doubles, a fielder’s choice grounder and backto-back one out base hits. That proved to be the difference as both teams played scoreless ball over the final four innings.

L-S opened the league playoffs with a 6-4 victory at Section Three champ Manheim Central Thursday, May 11. The visitors fought off a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the fourth and then forged ahead, scoring three more over the fifth and sixth innings before cutting Manheim’s seventh inning rally to just two runs.

Peyton Harsh struck out nine, walked four and earned the win on the hill while Anthony Turek got the save, pitching the final inning. He also sparked the three run fourth with a lead-off double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Brenneman singled and scored on Frego’s sac fly and Will Bailey, who reached on a bunt base hit, stole home with two outs.

A leadoff triple by Long and four walks contributed to a pair of fifth inning runs while Breneman’s two out, sixth inning single plated Long, who reached on a one out single, and capped the L-S scoring.

Long and Brenneman each finished with two hits.

Saturday morning, May 13, at Ephrata’s War Memorial field, the Pioneers outhit Hempfield 7-5, broke a 1-1 second inning tie with single runs in the third and fourth innings and survived the seventh inning, giving up just one run in a 3-2 result and Lampeter’s fourth straight triumph.

The Knights opened the seventh with three straight base hits before starting pitcher Jason Long worked a strikeout and a sac fly pop up.

“They have guys on first and second and a walk loads the bases,” recalled Swarr. “Then, on a 3-2 count, they hit a long fly ball and Logan Leaman makes an awesome

catch at the fence to end the game.”

Branco’s RBI single put L-S on the board, but the Knights matched that effort in the bottom half. A two out single by Bailey in the fourth gave L-S the lead and a fielder’s choice grounder by Harsh one inning later was enough to keep L-S in front.

Seven different Pioneers collected hits and Long secured the win on the hill, giving up one earned run.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

After their 15-5 stumble against Wyomissing, the girls’ lacrosse team ran its new winning streak to five straight with an 18-11 triumph over visiting York Catholic on Thursday, May 11 and a 10-8 L-L League semifinals win over Hempfield on Tuesday, May 16.

It was a back-and-forth effort at CV Tuesday night with neither team holding more than a two-goal advantage. Hanna Cissne scored three of Lampeter’s five first half goals and Rowan Kimmel (2a) finished with six overall, four coming in the second half. Ryann Logan added one goal and one assist. Abigail Welchans chipped in with two assists and Bethany Stoltzfus also dished an assist.

The Pioneers held a 5-3 first half advantage and both teams settled for five second half tallies. Freshman keeper Jillian Kelly finished with nine saves to help preserve the win.

L-S jumped out to an 11-6 first half lead against Wyomissing and cruised through the second half, holding off the visitors 7-5 and securing its 17th win of the season.

Bethany Stoltzfus led the attack with five goals and two assists with Cissne and Sophia Labrecque each notching hat tricks. Leigha Saurbaugh, Kimmel (2a) and Logan (1a) each found the back of the net twice.

TRACK

At the L-L League track and field championships Friday and Saturday, May 12-13, the Pioneer teams came away with a handful of medals and

a couple of school records on a damp and dreary day.

“It was not a perfect day for a meet, but we’ve had worse,” said head coach Cal Esh. “Colin Whitaker was our top medal winner, taking the 3200 with a commanding performance at 9:15.50.”

Township’s Gunner Geib was a distant second at 9:32.12 and Ben Devine added a fourth-place finish in 9:36.49.

Whitaker also competed in the 1600 where he finished in second place with a new school record (4:13.09). Parker Stoner’s third place time of 4:15.37 also broke the old school record and Devine chipped in with a fifth-place time of 4:23.33.

Also grabbing a medal was Aiden Wiley and Greyson Myers, both in the pole vault. Wiley cleared 12 feet for fifth place and Myers settled for seventh with an 11-6 vault.

For the girls, Maggie Swarr finished second in the javelin with a 130-2, just eight feet out of first place, and was fourth in the shot (36-1.5).

Lyndi Wall added a second in the 100 (12.48) and settled for fourth in the 200 (26.17).

Elly Bruner tied for second

in the high jump, clearing 5-0 and was seventh in the triple jump (34-5).

BOYS’ LACROSSE

The boys’ lacrosse team went up against Manheim Township, the Section One champs, in Tuesdays’ May 16, L-L League semifinal clash in Ephrata.

This one was nip-and-tuck the whole way. The Streaks held a slim 3-2 first quarter lead but L-S challenged, winning the second quarter, and forcing a 4-4 tie at the break.

The scoring picked up in the third quarter with both teams netting four each, leaving the final frame to determine the outcome. Township settled for two goals and denied the Pioneers.

KJ Kessler fueled the Pioneer attack with a hat trick.

Zach Labrecque, Colin Sullivan, and Chase Barber each had one goal and one assist.

Gavin Denlinger (1a) and Sam Groff (1g) also contributed as did Bryce Thomas who came away with nine saves.

TENNIS

Lampeter’s Cole Teaman was recently voted as a Section Two tennis all-star. He helped the Pioneers defend their Section Two crown.

Fans of the year

On April 26, Katie Overly and her son, Bryce Rhoades, of Willow Street traveled to Kansas City, Mo., for the 2023 National Football League (NFL) draft. Overly and Rhoades, who is a student at Marticville Middle School in Pequea, were invited to attend the event to represent their favorite football team: the Baltimore Ravens. Dressed from head to toe in their team’s colors of black and purple, the mother-andson duo got to meet other fans and players and announced two of the Ravens’ official draft picks.

“When we first got there, I was impressed with how friendly and kind everyone was,” Overly said. “Everyone was so welcoming and supportive of every team.” Upon arriving in Kansas City, Overly and Rhoades traveled to Union Station, where a variety of activities were offered over the course of the threeday event. Players signed autographs, and kids had a chance to participate in football kicking and throwing contests. When it came time for the actual draft announcements, fans sat in designated areas for their respective teams. Overly and Rhoades were front and center in the Ravens’ section.

On the third day of the event, Overly was invited to announce the Ravens’ 124th draft pick of Tavius Robinson, and Rhoades announced the team’s 157th draft pick of Kyu Blu Kelly. They were

given one minute to practice reading the names on each card before stepping up to the podium, waving a Ravens flag to ward off the boos of the opposing teams’ fans. “I told him that this was a once-in-alifetime opportunity. He did a great job,” Overly said. “It was so cool to be able to share this experience with my son; it’s our mother-son bond.”

Last summer, the NFL announced its Fan of the Year contest through social media. Overly entered the contest by providing background information about herself and answering a few questions. On Nov. 1, 2022, Overly attended what she thought was going to be an open practice for the Ravens at

a training facility in Owings Mill, Md. Instead of watching the team practice, Overly was stunned to walk into a surprise announcement to tell her that she was selected as the team’s winner of the Fan of the Year contest. “I was in shock. I’m just an average gal from Lancaster County,” Overly said. “I have no grand story, but I’m a nurse who works hard and I love football.” Overly works as a nurse at Brethren Village Retirement Community, where she is known as “the nurse with the purple hair.” As the Ravens’ fan of the year, Overly was invited to attend the 2023 NFL championship game to represent her team and the fanbase.

Spurrier earns honorable mention

Simeon Spurrier received an honorable mention for his essay in the annual Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) U.S. National Peace & Justice Ministries public policy essay contest. Spurrier is a 10thgrader at Lancaster Mennonite School in Lancaster. He will receive a cash prize.

In his essay, “Our Brokenness: An Essay Concerning the American Criminal Justice System,” Spurrier describes contributing factors to the current system of mass incarceration. In addition to changing

mandatory minimum sentencing policies, Spurrier advocates for the use of restorative justice as a system that addresses underlying causes of harm and works through the trauma caused by crimes.

The MCC high school essay contest, which is in its 24th year, encourages youths to explore and understand national policy issues while reflecting on how their faith engages with advocacy. Public policy topics in this year’s contest included immigration, climate change, and mass incarceration.
