Jeff Engroff of Millersville became involved with youth ministry as soon as he graduated from high school in 1984. He attended Worship Center in Leola and began to volunteer, which eventually led to full-time work as a youth ministry director for various local churches. Engroff worked full time in youth ministry up until the COVID-19 pandemic, when the closure of many church programs caused him to find work elsewhere. Two years ago, he decided to seek work where his passion lies and became the youth director at Lampeter United Methodist Church (LUMC), 1101 Lampeter Road, Lancaster.

Like many churches in the area, LUMC has offered vacation Bible school (VBS) programs in the past that have featured curricula from premade kits. Engroff, who has decades of experience working with similar programs, pitched an idea to the church: offer a unique curriculum for kids by pooling resources from different programs and adding fresh material. The idea resulted in the development of Camp VBS, a VBS program which will take place from Monday, June 19, to Thursday, June 22. The program will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at LUMC each day.
Camp VBS revolves around a theme of enjoying the outdoors and relates Scripture to a variety of activities. Engroff said that the primary challenge of developing youth programming is making content relatable to kids. While developing Camp VBS, he wanted to place an emphasis on making the content not only accessible, but also applicable to the lives of children and their families. “Sometimes we get caught up in the language of Scripture. I wanted to offer an opportunity for kids to experience something they might
not have access to often, like camping,” Engroff added. “There’s so much fun you can have with just camping, having a bonfire, playing some guitar and coming together.”
The majority of Camp VBS features outdoor activities, such as completing a scavenger hunt for craft materials and communing around a bonfire. Engroff also added a portion of the program that features an escape room, where participants will have to solve a puzzle and work together to complete a challenge.
In addition to making the program accessible with regard to its content, Engroff wanted to make it accessible for the church as it hosts Camp VBS. With a simple premise like camping, LUMC is able to place less strain on its budget, something that Engroff believes will benefit the kids. “It’s about getting on kids’ level and hearing about their lives and families,” Engroff said. “If we’re not getting hung up on a big production, we can focus more on connecting with the students.”

Track and field members earn District medals
BY MONA STEINHAUER
The track and field teams were represented at the District Three 3A Championships held at Shippensburg University on Friday and Saturday, May 19-20 and their efforts garnered a handful of medals.
Colin Whitaker was the top finisher for the Pioneers, grabbing a silver medal with his 9:10.75 in the 3200-meter
run on Friday. Susquehannock senior Matthew O’Brien earned gold with an 8:59.82. Teammate Ben Devine also competed in the 3200 and was .35 away from a district medal. His 9:21.09 was good for ninth place.
On Saturday, Whitaker competed in the mile and earned a fifth-place medal, finishing just .02 behind teammate Parker Stoner who claimed fourth place with a 4:13.02. “They both broke the school record again, having broken it at the league meet just a week prior,” noted head coach Cal Esh.
Also grabbing two medals was Maggie Swarr. The senior thrower tossed the shot put a personal best 38-0.25 on her final attempt and moved into fourth place on Friday. She was the top L-L League place-winner. Saturday, she competed in the javelin (124-11) and settled for another fourthplace effort, holding off Palmyra’s Sofie Price by two inches.
Also taking a place on the medal stand was Lyndi Wall. The senior clocked a 12.87 in the 100-meter prelims, and a 12.75 in the semifinals-both on Friday. Saturday, she settled for sixth

place with a 12.54.
Also competing was Elly Bruner who settled for 12th in the high jump (4-10) and Aidan Wiley in the pole vault.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
The Pioneers were faced with a tall task when they went up against Section One champ Manheim Township (17-2) in the LancasterLebanon League championship game at Penn Manor Thursday, May 18. The Streaks had won the past 12 League crowns. L-S was making its debut performance.
The Pioneers got off to a slow start, leaving Township with a quick 4-0 advantage but settled in after that and managed to cut the lead to 75 after scoring the final three goals of the half. Hannah Cissne sparked the rally with a low, reverse goal, Rowan Kimmel assisted Bethany Stoltzfus and then scored her only goal of the game.
“My team loves to compete; they thrive on playing excellent teams,” said head coach Marshall Krebs. “When a team goes up on them, which has happened against most of our toughest opponents, they do not blink. They pull together and lean on confidence. They are cool under pressure. We were able to gain possession late in the half,” he added, “and the offense was patient and deliberate.”
That rally, however, was not enough to push the Pioneers through the second half. Township found the back of the net four more times and held L-S to one as they captured their 13th LL crown.
“As a coach, you do everything you can to prepare the team long term, short term, off-season work, club play, lots of film, and specially designed practices,” said Krebs. “When you couple that with talented players, a team has a chance to compete. The team has a ton of pride and confidence that only comes with the hard work they put in individually and with each other.”

“Jillian played behind a three-year starter who is injured,” noted Krebs. “Her time will come, and that time happened to be now. She is ready. The credit goes to Jillian and our goalie coach, Kelby Hodge.”
SOFTBALL
The softball team entered the District Three 4A championships as the only team with a losing record (9-10) and the last seed, 14th. But that didn’t matter when they traveled to Fleetwood for an opening round game last Monday, May 22. The Pioneers jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Fleetwood cut the lead to 6-4 in the second but single runs in the third and sixth innings, along with a convincing fourspot in the seventh allowed the visitors to pull away.
“We had a number of players who hit well,” said head coach Earl Rutledge. “Maura (Savoca) pitched well (2K, 1W) and Ally Raub slammed the door. We also had great defense from Gabby Hiles (shortstop) and overall, we had zero errors for the game.”
Julia Gerard opened the game with a double, Raub singled and Brooke Zuber’s hit was misplayed, scoring Gerard. Kara Scranton singled in Raub and Paige Baxter’s double pushed in two more runs. Mackenzie Maki reached on an error that also allowed Baxter to score. And with two
outs, Chloe Meck’s fly ball to left field was also misplayed, allowing Hiles to score the sixth run.
Two errors and a wild pitch led to Lampeter’s seventh run and Zuber’s sixth inning homer made it 8-4. Gerard’s two run triple sparked the vis-
itors four-run seventh inning. Baxter’s three hits and three RBI led the 14-hit attack. Raub (2RBI) also finished with three hits while Gerard and Zuber each had two.
“It was a great win but now we play No. 2 seed Hamburg,” Rutledge noted.
Cissne and Stoltzfus (1a) both finished with two goals. Kimmel dished a pair of assists and Ryann Logan scored once. In goal, freshman Jillian Kelly recorded eight saves.

authors will return to host a workshop and share their creative methods as the kids develop their own material.
“The guest authors will share their own work with students and ask for feedback. It’s a cool aspect to the program because these kids are the authors’ main audience and they want to know what they’re thinking,” said Lindsay Bandy, the program’s supervisor. “I work with the guest author for constructive feedback strategies, and they work with the students to
make each other’s work better.” Bandy is also a published author who writes young adult historical fiction.
The Teen SummerZine program was introduced in 2021 as a way to creatively engage students over the summer while they are not in school.
The program won the Best Practices Award from the Pennsylvania State Library Association and was held virtually for its first two years.
This is the first year that the program will have in-person meetings and workshops for
students. “We didn’t have any county-wide teen programs for the summer; many programs are only tailored to younger kids,” Bandy said. “We wanted to do something to reach the older kids and help them to be creative over the summer break.” In December, the program’s participants will gather at the Manheim Township Public Library to celebrate the publication with cupcakes.

Summer Music Series at Long’s Park is a Lancaster institution
BY JEFF FALK
They say that the best things in life are free. Maybe the only thing better is people sharing resources with others.
The Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s Summer Music Series is back bigger and better than ever. But as it has evolved into a major event in Lancaster County, the Summer Music Series has become more reliant on the financial support of local businesses and philanthropic organizations.
Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation president Tom Ellis said that the popular events couldn’t be offered free to the public without that support. This year’s 13-concert Summer Music Series, which will be con-
ducted every Sunday at 7:30 p.m. from June 4 to Aug. 27 at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, is being backed by Citadel, Clark Associates, Ephrata National Bank, Everence, the Hershey Company, Lancaster County Community Foundation and Woodstream.
“It’s a special event and businesses are allowing us to have this event,” said Ellis. “The series doesn’t happen without these sponsors. It’s not a nicety; it’s a necessity. They’ve really stepped up in an economy that doesn’t allow for this type of funding.”
“We curate music and art for everyone in the Lancaster community,” added Ellis. “Most of our audience is drawn from the city of Lancaster.”
If generous support has become a trademark of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s Summer Music Series’ 61-year tradition, so has diversity. This summer’s music series, which features a wide variety of genres, from jazz to Irish, from blues to rock, from bluegrass to funk and soul, promises not to disappoint.
Traditionally, the Summer Music Series has drawn between 3,000 and 6,000 viewers for each 90-minute concert. That number usually balloons to 25,000 to 30,000 for its annual patriotic concert, which this year will be celebrated on July 2.
“It’s how summer begins,” said Ellis. “For people who grew up here, they’ll say, ‘I remember going to the Long’s Park Summer Music
Series.’ I think this year’s lineup is one of the best we’ve had in years. Its diversity is curated for every audience. We want to make sure the music resonates with the citizens of Lancaster. We almost need to be fresh and new every year so people come back.”
The now-iconic Long’s Park Amphitheater was built in 1962, and the summer music simply followed. Over those years, the Summer Music Series has introduced people to performers like Count Basie, Pat and Shirley Boone, The Smothers Brothers, Helen Reddy, The Spinners, Aretha Franklin, Arlo Guthrie, Roberta Flack and Kevin Bacon, many before they became household names.
“The musicians come to us after every event and tell us, ‘I hope you realize what you have here,’” said Ellis. “We don’t look for bands that create an on-stage performance through pyrotechnics and lighting. We want it to be pure art through music. We want to have artists who are true to their craft.”

pandemic to assist business owners who were heavily affected by the resulting closures. When Tanger Outlets contacted MJ Squad about hosting an event, MJ’s Squad’s co-founder Megan Kalbach said that she was ecstatic about the partnership. “Tanger Outlets reached out wanting to support our mission, which is great because it’s such a hub for businesses in the area,” Kalbach added. “The event has had a large boost of support from the community and has helped us support so many businesses and nonprofits.”
The Lancaster Community Market drew over 1,000 attendees in its first year. Kalbach received a wave of positive feedback from those in the community, as well as visitors of Lancaster who were pleasantly surprised by the festivities. Due to the fact that buses from surrounding areas stop at Tanger Outlets, Kalbach said the location of the market helps to promote the culture of businesses in Lancaster and extend their reach.

BASEBALL
The baseball team opened district play in dramatic fashion Friday, May 19 at home. The fifth seeded Pioneers needed ten innings to get past No. 12 Spring Grove, 2-1. In the bottom of the 10th, Anthony Turek, whose fifth inning homer tied the score at 1-1, walked. He was on first, with two outs, when Will Bailey drew a walk. “Kyler Branco also walked, and Logan Leaman got a two-strike hit to drive in Anthony with the winning run,” recalled head coach Jeff Swarr.
“Justin (White) and Peyton Harnish pitched their hearts out,” he added. “They both worked out of numerous jams to continue to give us an opportunity to win the game.”
L-S out hit the Rockets 10-8. White, Harsh and Leaman all finished with two hits.
Monday, they traveled to No. 4 Greencastle-Antrim where they saw their 4-0 lead vanish late in the game. The Blue Devils rallied down the
stretch and pulled off an 8-5 victory. They took a 5-4 lead in the fourth only to see L-S tie the game in the top of the sixth on a Harsh sac fly. Not to be out done, the hosts scored three times in the bottom half to pull out the win.
“Peyton (2K, 1W) started on two days rest and went as long as he could,” noted Swarr. “Mason Coe came in and competed. They bunched a couple hits with some walks and scored three times in that sixth inning. You have to credit Greencastle; they competed at the plate and took advantage of their opportunities.”
Will Bailey’s two hits led the Pioneers seven-hit offense.
The top five teams in Class 5A will advance to the PIAA championships.
“We still have an opportunity to work our way into the state playoffs,” said Swarr. “We are extremely proud of this group of players. They continue to work hard every day.”

A celebratory event will be held on Saturday, June 10, at 11 a.m. in Drumore Township Park, 1675 Furniss Road, Drumore. The public is invited to celebrate the presentation of new informational signs. Refreshments will be provided.
In 2022, the Friends of Fishing Creek received a grant from Lancaster Clean Water Partners to provide education about the Fishing Creek watershed. The grant included the creation of the new signs to be installed in Drumore Township Park, highlighting the native plants and functions of the pollinator garden and rain garden as well as the importance of the riparian buffers that have been planted over the past several years.
The Fishing Creek watershed is located in the southern portion of Lancaster County. In the Fishing Creek Nature Preserve, visitors can find a stream that hosts freshwater trout, cranes, herons, and countless other species; native wildflowers along the streambank; and vernal pools.
Friends of Fishing Creek is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) volunteer organization committed to monitoring, preserving, enhancing, and promoting the Fishing Creek watershed through education, community involvement, and watershed improvement projects. Since its founding in 2006, Friends of Fishing Creek has worked to protect watershed health in Drumore and engage community members in its projects.
In Drumore Township Park, people can find the Friends’ pollinator garden, containing many native wildflower species to attract butterflies and other pollinators. In the same park is the rain garden sponsored by Donegal Trout
Unlimited and planted by Friends of Fishing Creek volunteers. The rain garden helps control stormwater runoff while hosting a variety of native plants.
In recent years, the Friends of Fishing Creek group has also partnered with local Girl Scout troops. The Friends planned and executed several education events where dozens of Girl Scouts to learned about water quality and conservation efforts. In April 2019, approximately 80 Girl Scouts attended a handson event where they learned about the water cycle, participated in macroinvertebrate water testing, and helped the Friends plant the pollinator garden. At an event in May 2022, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and parents joined the Friends at Drumore Township Park to learn about riparian buffer tree plantings, native pollinator plants, and macroinvertebrate testing.
The Friends of Fishing Creek group has also sponsored several adult educational presentations at the Quarryville Library. Professional guest speakers visited the library to share information on invasive species and the Community Wildlife Habitat program.

“The Sound of Music” announced
Servant Stage will present
“The Sound of Music” at the Good Shepherd Chapel on the campus of Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Friday, June 2, to Sunday, June 18. Performances will take place on Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 and 7 p.m. There will not be a 7 p.m. show on Sunday, June 4.
This iconic Broadway musical, based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, follows an ebullient postulant who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a moral decision. The final collaboration between the duo of Rodgers and Hammerstein took the 1960 Tony Awards by storm. However, it rose to international popularity
through the Academy Awardwinning film adaptation starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which debuted in 1965. The musical’s songs include “Do-ReMi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” and “My Favorite Things.”
For Servant Stage, which has a mission to make outstanding, entertaining, family-friendly shows accessible to the community, “The Sound of Music” has long been near the top of the list of shows the organization wanted to produce. Servant Stage’s production has a 16piece orchestra and a cast of nearly 60 performers, including 20 young local performers sharing the roles of the von Trapp children and a 25-member women’s ensemble giving voice to the nuns of Nonnberg Abbey.
All performances are offered at pay-what-you-will prices. For more information and to reserve tickets, visit www.ServantStage.org or call 717-455-0255.

Funding will benefit Girls on the Run
With aims to combat health disparities and advance fitness and friendships among adolescent girls, Rite Aid Healthy Futures has renewed its partnership with Girls on the Run (GOTR) through a $1 million grant supporting the organization’s continued inclusion, diversity, equity and access (IDEA) work. The announcement comes as local GOTR councils prepare for their end-of-season 5Ks.
GOTR’s experience-based curriculum integrates running to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. The organization currently operates 171 local councils across the United States and Canada, serving nearly 200,000 girls annually.
The recent funding marks the third year of partnership between GOTR and Rite Aid Healthy Futures, the public charity affiliated with Rite Aid. The grant supports the two organizations’ shared commitment to strengthening and empowering local communities.
The $1 million grant will benefit the GOTR headquarters as well as the 50 local councils in Healthy Futures’ footprint, with funding focused on the continued development of GOTR’s IDEA program. In particular, GOTR is focused on reaching girls from underserved communities, promoting a culture of inclusion across the organization, building a culturally competent curriculum and increasing local resources in key communities.
Local councils will use the funds to diversify their coaching staff, increase program access for girls of color and further enhance programming that acknowledges the needs and realities of their communities. Funds will also go to strengthening the organization’s core programming and training while supporting sustainability across local councils, many of which are still recovering from the impacts of COVID-19.
The partnership between Healthy Futures and GOTR was established in 2020, with an initial grant of $1 million supporting programming during the pandemic. The 2020 grant contributed
to GOTR’s swiftly adapting services and programming to serve girls meaningfully and safely during the pandemic.
Together with donors, Rite Aid associates, community partners and neighbors, Rite Aid Healthy Futures, formerly
known as the Rite Aid Foundaion, has donated more than $15 million a year to causes, initiatives and organizations that make a difference in people’s lives. Visit www.RiteAidHealthy Futures.org to learn more.
