Graduating Pioneers reflect on what makes L-S special
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAs Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS) closes the chapter on the 2023-2024 school year, students in every grade are wrapping up their classes and kicking off their summer plans. Some students will fill their summertime with vacations and beach trips; others may prefer to crack open that new video game or horse around with friends before it’s time to return to class in the fall. But before graduating seniors officially start their summer breaks, many are taking a moment to reflect on their time at LSHS as they walk out its doors as students for the last time.
When looking back at their final year at LSHS, senior class officers Elisabeth Reinhart, Audrey O’Neil and Natalie
Eichelberger said they began to appreciate the sense of community that encompasses both students and teachers. “I feel like I never really appreciated the community before,” said Reinhart, the Class of 2024’s vice president. “I stayed after school last week and had so many interactions with teachers I hadn’t talked to in a long time. It was the first time I really thought about how I was going to miss it instead of just being excited to graduate.”
“It’s all really familiar,” added O’Neil, the class treasurer. “Since freshman year, I’ve felt comfortable with everyone. Everyone recognized how fun the senior events are, so a bunch of people who didn’t even have classes came back for things like the Clash of Classes. It’s your last year, so you have to make it count.”
“For me personally, I realized
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDUnited Disabilities Services (UDS), 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, will host an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 13. The event will offer members of the public an opportunity to learn about the organization’s service dog program and the many ways it benefits local schools and individuals throughout the community.
“We’re trying to reach out to as many people as we can. Not
only to talk about the program and offer a look behind the scenes, but also to make some new friends,” said UDS service dogs manager Lori Breece. “Not everyone can afford a sponsorship, but we could use (donations of) dog food.”
During the open house, UDS will share information on spon sorships and other ways people can support the service dog program. The event will include various demonstrations from dogs and clients, and staff
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAccording to the National Institute of Mental Health’s website, suicide was the 11th-leading cause of death in the United States in 2021. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported nearly 50,000 victims, and it determined suicide to be the second-leading cause of death among Americans from ages 10 to 14 and 25 to 34. Like many discussions related to mental health, the discourse

Rock Ford adds wardrobe to its collection
Historic Rock Ford has received a gift of a circa 1750 Lancaster County schrank, or wardrobe. This item was received from Sabrina duPont-Langenegger, the daughter and sole heir of William K. duPont, who died in 2020.
The Queen Anne schrank, featuring a unique bonnet top, stands at nearly 9 feet high and 6 feet wide. It represents a German-trained emigre craftsman’s masterful traditional Continental marquetry work. The exquisite inlays, featuring scorching and line engraving, demonstrate a high level of detail and shading, particularly in the flowers and compass stars adorning the paneled doors. American walnut was used for both primary and secondary wood.
The schrank is well preserved for its age. It features a majority of its original wrought iron hardware, and the pulls are nearly identical to a pair of wrought iron pulls made in Chester County that are now in the Titus C. Geesey Collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The turned feet, top central section of the cornice molding, and keystone are the only noted restorations.
The schrank is on display in the John J. Snyder Jr. Gallery of Early Lancaster County Decoratives Arts, which is housed on the second floor of the 18th-century bank barn at Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster.
Historic Rock Ford consists of the Snyder Gallery and the circa 1794 General Edward Hand Mansion, and the site is open from April through October. Admission information may be found at www.HistoricRock Ford.org.
Memorial ride
who lost his life to suicide earlier that year. The first ride was held during the weekend of what would have been Daulton’s 23rd birthday, and the event grew to become an annual tradition in the Southern End.
The fourth annual Daulton Trout Memorial Ride for Suicide Awareness and Prevention will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 8. The ride will begin at the Hoffman Building in Memorial Park, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, and registration will be available from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., with kickstands up at 10:30 a.m. Attendees who do not wish to ride are invited to a silent auction and lunch in the Hoffman Building after the ride concludes at 12:30 p.m.
Initially, the participants in the ride followed a course that followed Route 272 from Buck to Willow Street before concluding at the Solanco Fairgrounds. While the ride was scenic, Bill and Julia wanted to make it more visible to the community; in 2023, they expanded the route to incorporate other parts of the Southern End, including Lampeter, Stras -

burg, Georgetown, downtown Quarryville and New Providence. For the first two years, Bill and Julia used the proceeds of the memorial ride to endow the Daulton Trout Scholarship fund at Solanco High School. After sustaining the scholarship, the Trout family decided to use the money raised by the ride to support local organizations such as Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm in Conestoga and Mental Health America of Lancaster County. This year, the proceeds will also benefit Commonwealth Emergency Crisis Response. Bill and Julia said this is the last year they plan to have the ride due to the effort required to organize it and the painful memories it brings up. Since 2021, the couple has raised more than $45,000 for local nonprofits through the annual ride.
“If you cross paths with us or see us riding, please take a moment to think of the families who have suffered the tragedy of suicide,” Julia said. “It might take five minutes to wait for us to pass, but you can use that time to be grateful for your family.”

how much of a role teachers play in senior year activities,” said class secretary Eichelberger. “We had so many things every week that took time to plan and work out. I have so many memories just from the past month.”
On May 28, members of the Class of 2024 participated in the annual senior walkthrough to see their former teachers and to show younger students what they can look forward to once they finish their academic careers at LSHS. Class president Lauren Livengood said she appreciates the unique nature of the LSHS campus, as students from a wide range of grades frequently have opportunities to interact with one another. “We’re on the same campus, so we can mentor younger kids in the grades below us,” Livengood said.
“After 13 years, you know
everyone,” said O’Neil. “Even though there’s about 200 kids in your class, you know everyone’s last name. But you still get to find your people.”
During the 2024 commencement ceremony on Friday, May 31, Livengood gave an opening address titled “We,” and O’Neil and Eichelberger read the names of all graduating students.
The senior singers performed “Slipping Through My Fingers” by ABBA.
In the fall, Livengood plans to attend American University to study communication, legal institutions, economics and government. Reinhart will attend Millersville University to pursue a career in art education. O’Neil will study data science at Virginia Tech, and Eichelberger will attend James Madison University to purse a degree in sports medicine.
Bible2School offers at-home resources
BY CATHY MOLITORISBible2School has a mission to introduce elementary school students to Jesus through programs held off-site during the school day. When summer rolls around, the program continues to support families looking for Christian-focused curricula and resources. The organization
offers a podcast, a blog and a variety of at-home resources.
“We are going on three years of doing a weekly podcast,” said Megan Risser, director of marketing and advancement officer for Bible2School. “It’s released on Tuesdays, and each week we chat with a different guest regarding a variety of topics, but they are all ways of sharing
God’s Word with kids.” Topics on the “You CAN Tell the Children” podcast have ranged from praying for your child’s future spouse to establishing family devotion time.
“Each episode is under a half hour, and we don’t do ads,” Risser explained. “In the middle of each episode, we take a short break, and we answer a question from a Bible2School kid.” These prerecorded questions could include inquiries such as “How do I get to heaven?” or “If God created everything, who created God?” she said.
Once a month, Bible2School updates its blog with topics similar to the ones covered in the podcast. “Some people prefer to read, some prefer to listen, so we’re looking at different types of ways to get our resources out to people,” Risser said. “We want to offer practical, useful topics.”
Bible2School at-home resources include a mix of materials created in house as well as links to partner organizations that share a similar mission.
“We want to provide free resources that can make learning about the Bible easy at home,” Risser said, noting that resources include crafts, skits and science experiments. “We provide all of the instructions for the activity, and most include a guided conversation. We want to give parents exactly what they need to connect the dots for their kids.”
Most of the at-home resources are geared toward elementary school-age children, since Bible2School provides school-year programming to students in second, third and fourth grades. However, Risser noted, much of it could be tweaked to serve middle school students as well.
One of the newest resources from Bible2School is a 22-page guide called “God Was Not Taken Out of Public Schools.” “This is a downloadable tool to educate parents and caretakers on ways their child can confidently live out their faith in public school,” Risser explained. “A lot of parents don’t understand what their kid can do in a public school setting when it comes to their faith, and we’re on a mission to teach people. People feel like they need to leave their faith at the door, and that’s not the case.”
Bible2School began 45 years ago in Manheim Central School District. The program has grown to more than 100 classes at 45 schools throughout Lancaster County, and the organization has expanded to include programs in

Since 2017, UDS has expanded its service area to assist clients within five hours of Lancaster County, including individuals from Delaware, New York City, Maryland, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. “If someone is within five hours of us, we can help them - no matter what state they live in,” Breece said. In addition to extending its coverage area beyond Lancaster, UDS has continued to partner with schools throughout the county to place support dogs in every school district from Warwick to Solanco. Breece said the organization recently began talks with the School District of Lancaster to bring dogs to schools in the heart of the county. “We’re discovering that these districts now want a dog in every building,” added Breece. “It’s a domino effect; from the moment
kids are greeted by a dog when they get off the bus, their anxiety levels have been reduced. It’s a beautiful waterfall effect that goes through the whole school, and we couldn’t be more proud of it.”
The primary goal of UDS’ open house is to bring in supporters to help with the long-term financial sustainability of the service dog program. When training service dogs, UDS invests $25,000 to $30,000 per pup over the course of a 22-month process. Clients who receive dogs are only charged $5,000 of the total cost. “We’re always in the red, but it’s important to be good financial stewards as we try to help the community,” said Breece. “I’d love to see a dog in every school, and I believe we’re on our way. It’s the power of a wet nose and a wagging tail.”

Guild of Organists to offer concert
The Lancaster Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will host a recital at the historic Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster, on Thursday, June 13, at 7 p.m. For more than 50 years, the chapter’s members have offered their talents in a concert to raise funds for scholarships.
The church sanctuary, more than 250 years old, is home to a large organ built by the Moller company in 1962. However, the sanctuary retains many features from past organs in the space, most notably the façade built by David Tannenberg, a legendary organ builder from Lititz, in 1774. Today, the organ is tuned in Silbermann mean-tone temperament, giving it a sound unlike most organs and keyboard instruments found in this area of the world.
Music selections will range from some of the earliest works of Dietrich Buxtehude and J.S. Bach to late Romantic French works. In addi-
tion to performances by Frank Dodd, Joy Ide, Gary Garletts, Ross Ellison, and Kyle Postlethwait, Robert Horton will play a live improvisation on a submitted musical theme. The concert will close with Karl Moyer performing Marcel Dupre’s virtuosic “Prelude and Fugue in G Minor.”
A freewill offering will be received to support the Guild’s scholarship fund, which provides scholarships for young people to take organ lessons. One scholarship winner, Jaden Espenshade, will perform J.S. Bach’s “Piece d’Orgue.”
Parking can be found in the lot adjacent to the parish house and in the Duke Street parking garage.

Workforce Development Board creates kiosks
The Lancaster County Workforce Development Board (LCWDB) recently placed 35 educational kiosks in schools and local organizations throughout the county. The kiosks provide students, job seekers, and other community members with access to information about career pathways, training programs, and career opportunities within the county with local businesses.
The kiosks are placed in strategic locations, including 27 public and private high schools, community services locations, public libraries, and the PA CareerLink of Lancaster County.
The LCWDB partnered with the Lancaster Chamber to host ribbon-cutting events during the week on May 7 at various locations.
The kiosks feature a variety of interactive features, including a career assessment tool to help users identify their interests and skills, information about in-demand jobs and industries in Lancaster County, a directory of training programs and educational institutions, a job board with listings for open positions, and connection to the Inspire platform where students and businesses can engage on career exploration opportunities.
The LCWDB will also provide training to school staff members and community partners on how to use the educational kiosks. The goal is to make the kiosks a valuable resource for all Lancaster County residents who are seeking information about career and workforce development opportunities. The content on the kiosk will also be accessible through the Career Ready Lancaster! website at www .careerreadylancaster.com. Companies or organizations that would like to be included on the kiosk may contact Mary Byrd at mbyrd@lancastercount ywib.com.
