LCAA To Present Anniversary Art Show he Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will celebrate its 85th anniversary by holding an art show featuring 5-by-7-inch original paintings donated for sale by its members. The show, themed “Lancaster County Color,” will open on Sunday, June 12, from 1 to 4 p.m. The exhibit will then be open through July 7 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. The paintings, which will be on display in the Kauffman Gallery at the LCAA, will be hung on the walls according to color, creating a large color wheel. “Whatever the predominant color, it will go on that wall,” explained LCAA member Patricia Keller. “We have gotten animals, like horses; flowers; some abstracts; and fruits and vegetables. We have the gamut of things. Our artists did this as a group, so it’s not just one subject matter. Hopefully, this will be a successful fundraising event for us and one to celebrate our 85 years.”
T
The paintings will be matted, but not framed. Buyers are invited to have their paintings framed and then place them on a tabletop or a wall. Keller noted that the smaller paintings are designed to be more affordable to community members. Keller is also an artist and created paintings for the exhibit. “I have done tiny landscapes this size or (painted) one big flower. What is fun about doing it is that it’s a neat exercise. You can sort of expand your ideas,” she shared. “A lot of times I will do one that size before I do a big painting as a study - to get a feel for composition or the colors you want to use.” Founded in 1936, the LCAA supports the visual arts through exhibitions, classes, workshops and special programs. “We are the oldest art association in Lancaster County and have over 200 members,” said Keller. “Until we moved to Strasburg over 20 years ago, the association was centered on Vine Street in downtown Lancaster. We moved to Strasburg in 1998. We have a variety of classes for adults and also See LCAA pg 10

“It’s a way for me to give back to VisionCorps and to help other people facing the same challenges that I am,” said Mike Hora, when explaining his motivation to participate in Eye Drop 2022, which is presented by VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization that provides services to the blind and visually impaired. During the event, participants are asked to rappel 120 feet from the roof of the Holiday Inn in Lancaster down 10 stories to the ground.

In 2020, the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Lancaster Relay For Life event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Last year, Relay For Life of Lancaster County held an abbreviated event. “Everyone was so excited to be in each other’s presence and to be able to be on the track,” recalled Stephanie Delp, ACS senior development manager. “That momentum has carried us forward.” See Relay For Life pg 5

Undivided originated last year as the idea of Wesley Church youth director Nathaniel Lacy. After seeing how much division was being generated during the COVID19 pandemic, he wanted a way to reunite the community, particularly youths. “(Lacy) just really wanted to get young adults together to have a time of worship, have a speaker and have an artist. It’s really a community outreach,” said worship director Craig Deibler, who is organizing the event along with Lacy. “Wesley Church is hosting it, but it’s not for Wesley Church. We’re putting this on for the community and beyond.” Undivided was a great success last year, even though rain forced the event indoors. Organziers hope that the weather will be better this time. On the day of the event, a wide range of food will be available for purchase from food trucks that will be on-site from 2 to 5 p.m. There will also be plenty of free, waterthemed activities such as a water slide and a dunk tank. Entertainment and the message of the day will begin at 5 p.m. The evening’s speaker will be Bob Lenz, who will address the subject of bullying. Lenz presents a program titled “Dignity Revolution” at middle schools and high schools, but in this environment, he will include the faith component of his message. Tom Coverly, an illusionist, will perform, followed by Dixon, the featured singersongwriter, who placed seventh on the 11th season of American Idol. He will bring a message in his Christian music. “We’re certainly inviting all ages. The speaker and the artist will be geared more toward youths,” Deibler said, “(but) parents are welcome to stay and enjoy it, too. There are plenty of adults that need to hear what’s being spoken about. It’s definitely for the whole community.” Admission to Undivided is free. The event will be held rain or shine. Wesley Church is located at 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. For more information, call 717-786-8322 or visit www.wesleyqville.org or www.facebook.com/wesley churchinqville.

Hora is legally blind and has glaucoma, an eye disease that affects his depth perception and ability to see fine detail. He began working at VisionCorps in 2013, and heard about the fundraiser from Megan Tomsheck, VisionCorps vice president. “I never had a fear of heights, and I was pretty active my entire life. I wanted to do it. It sounded like fun,” Hora recalled. “Megan Tomsheck provided some videos and literature, and the more I saw and read, the more excited I got. It’s
our biggest fundraiser.” He credits VisionCorps’ rehabilitation services with helping him learn to adapt to his vision loss and to find employment again, this time working on a production line at VisionCorps. “Eleven years ago, it got to the point I was not able to do the work that I was trained for. Somebody recommended VisionCorps, and I contacted them. They jumped into action,” he said. “I was assigned a client manager, and they evaluated my needs and provided me with mobility and occupational and vocational rehab.” “I have never been charged a dime for the services I received,” he added. VisionCorps also provided Hora with technology training that allows him to use his smartphone and a computer. “I suffered significant vision loss two years ago. I lost the ability to read texts, so I got introduced to a software program called JAWS that allows me to use the computer,” he said. “It actually reads what is on the screen and tells me what I am typing in. It’s like learning a whole new language.” Hora is taking part in the Eye Drop fundraiser for the third time. “This year I promised myself to give it more time coming down,” he said. “They do a great job with training. It’s very safe. They take all the safety precautions.” Eye Drop 2022, VisionCorps’ signature fundraiser, is set for Friday, June 10, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. Participants must commit to raising at least $1,000 each to support VisionCorps. A new attraction at this year’s Eye Drop will be an expo. It will include information about services provided by the agency, tips and demonstrations of equipment for those with impaired vision and information about ways to promote healthy eyesight. Also scheduled are technology demonstrations and talks by medical professionals, who will discuss healthy diets and how diet impacts eye conditions. To learn more about the event or to register as a participant, visit www.EyeDrop2022.org. Hora, an outdoorsman and fisherman, has created a fundraising team called American Ninja Walleyes. Those who would like to contribute to his fundraising efforts may visit https://give.visioncorps.net /team/411113.

For 2022, Relay is back, and to celebrate, organizers are inviting area residents to come enjoy the carnival-style event they have planned. Activities will begin at noon on Friday, June 10, and conclude at noon on Saturday, June 11. As in the past, teams will gather at Conestoga Valley High School, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, forming a 50-team tent city, as each team keeps at least one member walking the school track throughout the 24-hour period. The event is presented by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. In keeping with the carnival theme, planners will have tents, stilt walkers, clowns, a magician, face painters, and balloon artists at the location, and a gap in the center of the tent city will create a sort of midway where relay teams will have carnival games set up. Sharon Groff of the Misfits on a Mission team emphasized that Lancaster County residents are welcome to join in the activities. “We want people to know they don’t have to be on a team or be a cancer survivor (to take part),” she said. “Anyone can come. Bring the kids out.” Indeed, Delp reported that children’s activities will be held during both days. Traditional Relay activities will also be observed, including the survivor’s ceremony at 4 p.m. on June 10 and the luminaria ceremony at dusk that same evening. At 7 p.m. on June 10, the annual cake auction will be held. Delp noted that the auction, which features James Fishel as auctioneer, is not limited to cakes. “Dotty Moser’s famous fudge has brought over $300 at auction,”she said. On the morning of June 11, all survivors and caregivers are invited to a free breakfast provided by the Breakfast Crew beginning at 8 a.m. KPETS will be on-site to promote the ACS Bark For Life

Museum, College To Offer Art Camp Lancaster Museum of Art and Pennsylvania College of Art & Design’s (PCA&D) Center for Creative Exploration (CCE) are partnering to offer an in-person summer art camp for students in grades two to six. The camp will use the museum’s permanent collection not only to teach students about what it is like to work in a museum, but also to inspire new works of art to be shown in exhibition. “From Making to Museum: A Lancaster Museum of Art and PCA&D Art Camp” will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, July 11, through Friday, July 15. Young artists will meet practicing, professional artists; learn about
museum careers; and create art, which will be displayed with pieces from the museum’s collection in an exhibition at the camp’s conclusion. Campers will be on-site at both Lancaster Museum of Art and PCA&D, a 10-minute walk away, and will be escorted between the two locations. At the museum’s morning sessions, campers will work directly with artists and other professionals in the field on writing about art, discussing museum careers such as curator and art handler, and choosing a Lancaster Museum of Art piece that will inspire their own artwork. Children look forward to summer vacation every year. The last day of school gives way to less structured days when kids can spend more time outdoors and less time studying. Summer vacation can be a dilemma for parents, especially in households where both parents work full time. A pandemicrelated increase in remote working has made that problem somewhat more manageable, but even parents working from home must find fun ways for children to stay occupied until the new school year begins. No two kids are the same, so parents may need to try various activities until they find something their children enjoy doing during the lazy days of summer. Day camps provide much of the structure of school without all the homework. Many parks and recreation departments run summer day camps for kids. Camps can be generalized or specialized. For example, some may offer an array of activities in a given day,

In a game that seesawed back-and-forth, Bryce Thomas denied a shot on goal with nine seconds remaining, sending the Pioneers into overtime. The visitors won the draw and 21 seconds into the extra session, McClain scored off a pass from Colin Sullivan lifting L-S to its first PIAA victory, 10-9. McClain finished with five goals and one assist and Sullivan added two goals and four assists as L-S advances to the state quarterfinals opposite District Two champ Wyoming Seminary. The Crusaders scored the opening goal of the game, but L-S rallied with three straight, two by McClain, for a lead they never relinquished. Landsdale cut the lead to 43 just before the break and knotted the score at 4-4 midway through the third but goals by McClain and Sullivan lifted L-S to a 6-4 lead. including sports and nature walks, while others may focus on a single activity, like musical lessons or science-based programs. Camps run by local parks and recreational departments do not typically last all summer, which parents should keep in mind when enrolling youngsters. Parents may be surprised by how much their children enjoy a good book. When suggesting to children that they read more this summer, parents can note the many ways that reading for pleasure differs from reading for school. Parents can point out that kids will not have to submit book reports and emphasize that they can choose their own books. Weekly visits to the library, where children can pick from hundreds of books, can get youngsters even more excited about reading. Play dates are a great way to make children happy and take some items off parents’ daily to-do lists. Parents can arrange routine summer play dates with children’s school friends, neighbors, or cousins. Parents can alternate hosting responsibilities, so they can get work done at home and enjoy a break when it is not their turn to host. Perhaps in recognition of the need for affordable, family-friendly activities, many communities now host free events for children and their parents each week. Weekly movie nights under the stars and concerts in community squares are offered in many communities, but those same towns also may host events specifically for children during the daytime. A simple internet search of “ free events near me” may unveil a host of activities that can keep kids occupied on summer days when their schedules are open. Local libraries can be resources for free events, as well. Summer vacation is a relaxing time for youngsters. Parents who do not want that relaxation to turn into boredom can look to various activities to occupy their children’s time until a new school year begins.
