Fire company will celebrate 100 years of serving the Southern End
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThere are few things that remain unchanged after the passing of a century. The 20th century in particular brought about radical advancement in technology and societies around the globe. Although the Willow Street Fire Company is one of many fire departments that have evolved to better serve modern society, its core mission has stayed the same - even after 100 years.
The Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 N. Willow Street Pike, will commemorate 100 years of service with an open house and community celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. The rain-or-shine event will include live music, local vendors and demonstrations from several emergency service orga nizations from Willow Street and its neighboring communities.
Demonstrations will include medical helicopters and an antique fire engine, as well as
a medical helicopter fly-by if weather permits. Attendees will have an opportunity to complete a small obstacle course and learn about the safest methods of exiting a smoky building. Refreshments will be available to purchase from a variety of food trucks, such as Tri-County Bar becue, Premium Shaved Ice, G’s Oven Fresh Pizza, Auntie Anne’s and Moo Shakes. Tickets for a prize drawing will be available to purchase during the open house, and prizes will include items from
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDOn June 9, the Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, opened its summer membership art show. The exhibit features a variety of artworks by the organization’s members, and it will remain on display in the LCAA’s Kauffman Gallery until
Thursday, July 11.
Each of LCAA’s membership shows incorporate multiple new themes each year, and featured artists submit their work in the professional or non-professional categories. Each entrant is eligible to receive one award per show, and the award recipients are selected by a panel of judges comprising professional artists
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAcorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation, located in Millersville, is about to make history. In May, Acorn Acres’ founder and executive director, Betsy Shank, announced a new campaign to secure funding for a major expansion. In addition to enhancing Acorn Acres’ level of care and capacity for animals, the project will make the organization Lancaster County’s first commercial wildlife facility. Acorn Acres’ expansion will
include an additional facility that will be equipped with advanced diagnostic tools such as fluoroscopy and X-ray machines, as well as an on-site laboratory. The new facility, which is approximately 2,000 square feet, was formerly used as a veterinary office building, and it will allow Acorn Acres to bring in more volunteers, more animals and members of the public who wish to take a look at the many ways it serves the community. Shank said she initially spoke with Ryan and Ashley Tuma, the

Summer Lunch Club: Come for the sustenance, stay for the fun
BY JEFF FALKIt provides energy. It helps with the growth of muscle and bone. It aids in the development of cognitive function.
The importance of nutrition and a healthy diet can’t be overstatedor taken for granted.
Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services’ (CVCCS) Summer Lunch Club seeks to be a reliable and consistent source of food for growing local children. The lunch club is also designed to bridge a calorie gap for students involved in the free and reduced-cost meal program during the school year.
“Good nutrition is important to children’s development,” said CVCCS’ executive director, Jon Barrett. “In America, we don’t think hunger can be an issue. But food is huge for cognitive development; it affects everything. Hunger is directly connected to our brains. That’s why we want to make sure we’re prioritizing it. Food is critical.”
This summer, for the first time in conjunction with the faith-based Good News Club, the Summer Lunch Club will be conducted every Wednesday from June 12 to Aug. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at East Lampeter Township’s Flory Park, 416 Dohner Drive, Lancaster.
The Summer Lunch Club, whose slogan is “Fresh Food and Friendly Faces,” also features games, activities and fellowship and is open to people age 18 and under.
The program is free, no sign-ups are required, and each child will be given three meals, which can be taken off-site. Typically, anywhere from 20 to 40 kids and youths attend the enhanced lunches.
“They’re Conestoga Valley students, but it’s open to anyone in Lancaster County,” said Barrett. “It’s mostly kids from lower-income homes. It’s within walking distance for a lot of kids. We do weekend meals during school, so this is a way to continue that ministry into the summer. It’s also a response to (the free and reduced-cost meal program). They’re getting their needs met at school, but outside of school is where the issue is. During the summer, they’re not getting those needs met.”
The hot and cold, easy-to-handle food is prepared and packaged at CVCCS’ kitchen and driven to Flory Park. An emphasis is placed on making the food tasty and healthy.
“In the past, we tried to make the food more healthy,” said Barrett. “That’s addressing the goal, but we also want to make sure the
kids are eating it.”
Since the lunch program started about eight years ago, CVCCS has always taken a “feeding the body, feeding the soul” approach to its Summer Lunch Club. The new partnership with Good News Club is expected to take that approach to a new level.

does, between 15 and 20 to be exact.
“They’re going to do the spiritual side and we’re going to do the food side,” said Barrett of Good News Club. “We’re focusing on the holistic side. We believe people are more than mouths to feed. There’s a lot of interaction. We’re also building relationships with kids.”
Of course, it takes volunteers for the Summer Lunch Club to do what it
“There’s a lot of excitement and some kids are just hanging out,” said Barrett. “It can help with loneliness. Kids have so much to offer and they’re worth our time. We try to offer them positive relationships. It just goes such a long way.”

such as gallery owners, art professors and accomplished painters. A new panel of judges is selected for each show.
A second exhibit titled “The Four Seasons” is currently on display in the Steinmetz Gallery. The show was opened to any local artist above the age of 15, and submissions include drawings, paintings, photography, fine crafts and many other
mediums. Each entry focuses on a fall, spring, summer or winter theme, and the exhibit will remain open until July 11. “We like to choose a theme that incorporates a broad subject matter to allow a wide range of interpretations by artists,” said Patricia Keller of Landisville, a member of LCAA and exhibit coordinator. Although LCAA is based in Strasburg, its members hail from communities across Lancaster County.
“The Four Seasons” exhibit doubles as a fundraiser for LCAA. Each highlighted artist donated his or her work to be featured in the show, and the proceeds of art sales will support LCAA’s many programs and community art events.
For the second year, LCAA will hold the Summer Sketchbook Challenge, which is open to both members and nonmembers. Participants will receive a sketchbook to populate with drawings throughout the summer, and the completed books will be displayed in a judged exhibit

owners of the new facility, roughly one year ago about using the space for Acorn Acres. After discussing the potential expansion while Shank was teaching in North Carolina, Ashley suggested the two women meet in person on Feb. 28, unaware that it was the one-year anniversary of the passing of Acorn Acres’ late mascot, Poppy the groundhog. “I said, ‘I hear you, Poppy. I’ll go,’ added Shank. Once the details were squared away, Shank officially partnered with Ryan and Ashley to rent the new space and launch the Capacity Campaign.
“I’ve had to turn away animals from Acorn Acres every year because
we literally run out of room,” Shank said. “This new facility will allow us to take a higher number of animals, welcome additional volunteers and bring in additional species.”
Currently, Acorn Acres specializes in rehabilitating squirrels, rabbits and woodchucks; the expansion will enable the organization to extend its care to bats and Pennsylvania’s only native marsupial, the Virginia opossum.
Once the new facility is officially up and running, Shank plans to offer tours to members of the public. Due to regulations, wildlife centers are not able to exhibit animals in rehabilitation to prevent them from growing accustomed to human contact. The examination rooms in the new building are equipped with one-sided windows, which will allow guests to see the animals while avoiding direct contact.
Seniors’ group sets annual picnic
The Strasburg Area Senior Citizens will hold its annual spring picnic on Wednesday, June 19, at 1 p.m. at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg.
Guests are welcome. There is a fee per member or guest. There is also a registration fee at the door to cover the fire hall rental.
Acorn Acres’ primary goal is now to secure funding for the move into the facility and its continued operation. To make a donation online, visit https://tinyurl.com/Acorn AcresExpansion. For more information or to view other donations options, visit www.acornacreswr .com/capacity_campaign.
Strasburg Seniors is a nonprofit organization chartered in 1966 for the recreation and benefit of area residents age 50 and older. Meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of every month, and the club also holds a summer picnic and yearly Christmas party as well as outings and trips.

Former L-S softball players find success at U of Delaware
Julz Garber and Chloe Blantz, key members of the first Lampeter-Strasburg softball team to win a state title - a milestone achieved in 2018 - continued their winning ways by helping the University of Delaware to earn the most wins in program history and a second-place finish in the CAA conference.
Garber, a four-year starter in center field, was named the CAA Defensive Player of the year and did not commit an error all season. The senior received her second NFCA All-Region nod after being named to the All-CAA Second Team, earning her fourth postseason honor in four years, which included All-CAA Second Team in 2022 and 2023 and the CAA All-Rookie Team in 2021. Garber led the team with 61 hits, 41 runs, and 16 stolen bases. She also had one of the top batting averages on the team at .343 and
led the Blue Hens with 19 multi-hit games. Season highlights included four hits against North Carolina A&T and the game-winning home run over Elon. Garber is also a four-time CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll member.
Blantz, a three-year starter at shortstop, received her third CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll
award. This year she started in all 52 games. She batted .277 with 44 hits, 31 runs, 12 doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 25 RBIs. Blantz had 10 multiple-hit games and six games with multiple RBIs. Season highlights included a walk-off base hit RBI against Monmouth and three hits against Akron. She had a .945 fielding percentage in 171 total chances.

Lancaster County Commissioner Ray D’Agostino and state Reps. Steven Mentzer and Bryan Cutler will attend the opening ceremony of the event, and a memorial will be set up to honor five members of the Willow Street Fire Company who have died in the line of duty since the department was founded.
“We are a 100% volunteer fire company. Being volunteer-run and lasting 100 years is almost unheard of, but we manage due to community support,” said Jennifer Anastasio, chair of the open house committee. “We want to celebrate with (members of the community) because of that.”
Although Willow Street Fire Company receives a small portion of its funding from West Lampeter Township, its primary
source of funds is acquired via fundraising letters it sends out to the community three times a year. Community donations help to cover expenses such as building upgrades, apparatus maintenance and safety equipment, allowing the fire company to better serve Willow Street and parts of Pequea and Providence townships. The organization has recently made a few significant improvements to its fire station, including a full-service generator that will allow the facility to function in the event of a complete power outage.

State St., Ephrata, on Monday, June 17, from 1 to 3 p.m.; Good’s Store, 2499 Stiegel Pike (Route 501 North), Schaefferstown, on Monday, June 24, from 1 to 3 p.m.; and Good’s Store, 1338 Main St., East Earl, on Tuesday, June 25, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Drop-off testing will also be offered for free.
