Blood Drive To Honor LSHS Alumnus Ryan Smith BY COURTNEY MENGEL
t the age of 21, Ryan Smith, the son of Kimberly and Craig Smith, passed away on March 22, concluding his battle with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Ryan was a basketball standout at Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS) and earned Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 MVP honors his senior year. He went on to play basketball at East Stroudsburg University, where he averaged 16.9 points and eight rebounds per game as a freshman. The Warriors made it to the PSAC semifinals and the NCAA Division II tournament in 2018-19. He was also named PSAC East Freshman of the Year and was recognized as a secondteam All-PSAC East pick. On Wednesday, July 21, from 1 to 6 p.m., the Mitzvah Moms will host an American Red Cross blood drive in honor of Ryan, an LSHS alumnus.
“Ryan has had such an impact on the community, so we decided to have this blood drive in his honor.” Mitzvah Moms was created by Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg in the fall of 2020. “Mitzvah” is a
Hebrew word that means “good deed.” Initially, Krouse and Harting focused on collecting items for the homeless and then shifted their mission to helping people affected by COVID-19. Now, the group helps those who are struggling with their phyrsical or mental health or are experiencing other challenges. When Mitzvah Moms leadership team member Heather Reynolds heard about Ryan’s death, she asked Kimberly if the Mitzvah Moms could host a blood drive in Ryan’s memory. “Ryan has had such an impact on the community, so we decided to have this blood drive in his honor,” stated Reynolds. “Mitzvah Moms is all about doing good deeds, and this is just one way we can help people.” For more information on Mitzvah Moms, readers may email mitzvahmomsrock@gmail.com, search for “Mitzvah Moms” on Facebook, or visit https://mitzvah momsrock.weebly.com/.

Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state. Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to mid-September. Many of these beaches have a swim-atyour-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road. The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club is a registered nonprofit organization that began in 2014. Its mission is to bring together local people who share an interest in geology and paleontology. The club has monthly meetings with presentations, and members go on local and outof-state field trips. Additionally, the club helps scouts earn their merit loops and
badges, and a few qualified members teach geology for free - often on a field trip to the Pequea Silver Mines. Proceeds from club membership and shows allow for building rental, insurance for members, field trip expenses, events for scouts, and more. For more information, search for “Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club” on Facebook.

Giant Expands Flashfood App Availability The Giant Company recently announced that it is rolling out the Flashfood app to all Giant and Martin’s stores following a successful pilot. Designed to reduce food waste and help customers save money on fresh food items nearing their bestbefore date, the Flashfood partnership has helped the Giant Company divert more than 250,000 pounds of food waste from landfills. The Flashfood app allows shoppers to purchase fresh food, including produce, meat, deli and bakery products that are nearing their best-before date at significantly reduced prices. First
introduced in May at four Giant stores in Lancaster, Flashfood is currently available at more than 30 stores. The rollout will place Flashfood at 170 participating Giant and Martin’s stores by fall. The chainwide rollout of Flashfood begins with stores in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, with additional stores joining each month. By downloading the Flashfood app, which is free on iOS and Android, shoppers can browse deals on fresh items that are nearing their bestbefore dates. Purchases are then made directly through
the app and shoppers pick up their order the same day from the Flashfood zone located inside the participating Giant or Martin’s store. In addition to the Flashfood app, Giant also has recycling and donation programs in place. Last year alone, through Giant’s Meat the Needs program and in partnership with Feeding America, more than five million pounds of safe, consumable fresh food that would have otherwise gone unsold was frozen and donated to regional food bank partners. Visit www.giantfoodstores .com or www.martinsfoods .com for more information.
